editor’s letter

Welcome to the spring issue

As I have settled into my new role as Editor of STYLEetc, putting together this issue has made me see that I am not alone in stepping out into the great unknown. All around me others are doing exactly the same and every time a new feature dropped into my inbox, I found myself inspired and encouraged by stories of people achieving great things through not being afraid to try. This theme became prevalent throughout the features in our spring issue. I’m really proud of the magazine we’ve produced. The STYLEetc team have pulled out all the stops to ensure the pages are packed with inspiring words and images. I travelled to London to interview Oliver Proudlock from Made In Chelsea about his fashion brand Serge DeNimes (p.16). Known on the show as “the stylish one”, Ollie gives us the lowdown on the inspirations behind his brand and style.

Closer to home we chat to Kirsty Attwood (Head of Fashion for Manchester Fashion Week) and Helen Dimmick (Managing Director of jewellers Green + Benz), who have both exchanged life in the big smoke for Manchester’s sunny skies (p.73 & p.11). Fashion-wise we bring you our favourite spring trends fresh from the Harvey Nichols catwalk (p.8), and our fashion ed Siobhan Cooper and creative duo Sailor + Stannard have worked their magic bringing those trends to life in the photo shoot Stepford Girl (p.30). We also introduce you to Steph Cunningham, representing design talent up north with her print-tastic debut collection (p.37). I hope this issue inspires you, as it has me, to embrace the changes and challenges the year may bring, with a resolve to do things that push us out of our comfort zone, safe in the knowledge the only mistake we could ever really make in life is to sit still!

Taking inspiration from the fabrics, colours and patterns in the trends to create a glamorous and chic look, Stila was the official make-up sponsor for the event. The ‘Valentina’ lipstick used in the show was so popular with guests it sold out in store that evening. The models’ hair was styled exclusively by Mark Izzard using L’Oreal Professional.

Scented by Jo Malone’s latest fragrance, Earl Grey & Cucumber, the Fashion Show took place on the first floor of Harvey Nichols store. With a U-shaped all white catwalk and dimmed lights to create excitement, music queued top models from London and the North West, including Britain’s Next Top Model winner Jade Thompson, to appear.

For STYLEetc’s favourite theme “Neon News”, models strutted down the catwalk in vivid creations by BCBG Max Azria, Stella McCartney and Roberto Cavalli.

When did your love affair with jewellery first begin? I was studying for my A Levels, reading a book on Egyptian art and jewellery, when I saw one of the pectorals from Tutankhamun’s tomb. I couldn’t believe that something could be so beautiful and so symbolic. It really ignited an interest in how we use jewellery to represent things about ourselves and significant moments in our lives. I knew, then, that I wanted a career in jewellery and it’s a passion I’ve pursued ever since. Do you favour silver or gold jewellery? That’s really hard for me… It’s a bit like asking me which is my favourite child! White gold probably looks better with my skin tone but rose gold is really in vogue at the moment. In terms of long-term wear, the optimum is possibly platinum because of its rareness, durability and toughness. But I also love costume jewellery and I love mixing it – even today I’ve got both gold and silver pieces on. Tell us about your favourite piece of jewellery. My favourite piece at the moment is a Sarah Ho ring which is part of her V-Seal collection. It’s made with rose quartz in an art deco setting – very on trend with The Great Gatsby. A lot of people remark on it as it’s so eye catching. Who are your favourite jewellery designers? I invest a great deal into jewellery designers so I love all the ones you can see on our website. It’s hard to narrow it down but to mention a few I’d say Shuan Leane, Fei

Helen Dimmick is the Managing Director of independent jewellers Green + Benz. jewellery specialist and diamond expert with over 14 years of experience within Helen brings a winning mixture of financial acumen and feminine sensitivity work, which is ultimately about bringing together her two passions: people

Liu and Andrew Geoghegan. There’s a wealth of British talent out there and I’m very much about backing and supporting them and making sure they have a route to the public through Green + Benz. Who are your style icons? I really like vintage glamour and people who are timeless: Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn, even Princess Diana. I feel that you have to understand the past to know where you’re going. Where do you like to shop for clothes? I love Harvey Nichols – the designer I wear most is BCBG Max Azria. I’m styled by Martine Alexander, who is a celebrity stylist but styles me

as well – she’s great fun. There are some lovely independent boutiques in Cheshire. I recently went shopping in Hale and bought a gorgeous blue Hale Bob dress from The Editeur and a fantastic evening dress from Lace. I plan on wearing the Lace dress to this year’s UK Retail Jewellery Awards, where I’ll be judging. What does 2013 hold for you? We’re working on some new champagne bars – little private viewing rooms – in the stores in Sheffield and Chesterfield. We also want to spread the word of Green + Benz and turn it from a regional brand into a national brand. I’m working on a fully transactional website which I hope to launch by the end of the year. Most of all, it’s about being the best we can possibly be.

Yes, we know we’re barely into Spring yet, but fashion is always thinking a couple of seasons ahead and not wanting to be left behind, STYLEetc asked fashion blogger Pearl Westwood to bring back all the gossip, tips and tricks from LFW AW13, so we can stay ahead of the crowds! Here’s Pearl’s insight into the looks we’ll all be coveting come the autumn! 12

I wouldn’t call it a heat wave, no, but spring-like mild weather and sunshine appeared out of nowhere – to throw the fash pack into dismay for the first day of London Fashion Week. Why were we not rejoicing in this lovely weather? Well most of us had suitcases filled with heavy coats, faux fur stoles, chunky knits and stompy boots... all now totally un-wearable and leaving us show-goers in a bizarre mid-season state of dress. The general fashion rule soon became to just add a neon beanie to every outfit! On the street the perfect style statement was the bomber jacket, updated from last season with wacky prints and hand painted details for an individual look. The must have item was a Rianna Phillips digitally printed clutch bag, the perfect size for carrying around all those show invites.

RUNWAY

On the runway the overall feel was a mash up of understated elegance, with grungy, laid-back cool. The decade in focus remained the 1960’s. It seems London designers have not yet finished exploring this decade. Christopher Kane embraced 60s shapes, whilst Erdem made low heeled, pointed toe shoes a must have. Both Orla Kiely and Burberry embraced the pencil skirt, with Christopher Bailey choosing a cheeky sheer latex material. This was the epitome of secretary chic. Oversized pieces and exaggerated shapes were welcomed by many designers. Vivienne Westwood Red Label showed a stunning, cobalt blue, oversized cocoon coat, whilst Issa took hem lines to the floor in sweeping sheepskin overcoats. Mary Katrantzou and Mulberry took disproportion to the next stage, creating pieces which moulded the contours of the body in alien-like ways. Jena.Theo took oversized to mean fun-sized with slouchy, smiley-face printed T-shirt dresses.

Kim’s folkloric winter knits and Yulia Kondranina’s elegantly entwined evening gowns. Sheer whimsy showed a daring side of the designers, with huge, chunky, pastel coloured scarves at Henry Holland, who quoted “Nana’s at a rave” as inspiration. Whilst Louise Gray, as always, threw out the rule book and sent out models in glorious prints, accessorised with toilet roll rings and tin foil hats! The best thing about London fashion? The quirky, fearless and fun filled collections.

STYLEetc went backstage with Bobbi Brown to get the inside scoop on the catwalk beauty trends. At Orla Kiely, Brigitte Bardot was noted as a key inspiration, again referencing the 60’s trend. A chocolate smoky eye and nude lip created a sulty, sexy look that was tame enough for the office. At Jena.Theo a grunge inspired look was created: a soft eye with a pop of acid orange lip influenced by the bright prints in the collection.

If you only buy one piece for the AW13 season make sure it is in velvet. Antipodium lead the way with rich jewel colours: ruby, emerald and amethyst. Don’t save this sumptuous fabric for evening, wear by day with sportswear. Keeping the colour spectrum alive was Bora Aksu with dusky pinks and deep purples in brocade and chiffon for a 1920’s gothic fantasy. Q&A with Oliver Proudlock

Tell us a bit about Serge DeNîmes. Who is the Serge man?

We hear you are planning to launch denimwear. When can we expect it to hit the shelves?

Serge DeNîmes is a young, urban brand with an emphasis on the quality of the T-shirts themselves and also the print. I want to make sure I am creating the best graphics possible, with unique designs.

I want to let the brand grow organically, so slowly over the next year bring in little bits of denim. Our denim caps are out now. We’re also working on some denim rucksacks. I’m going to start incorporating bits of denim in the T-shirts, then maybe in a year’s time I’ll start doing jeans.

I’ve been interested in fashion from a young age. I studied fine art for four years at Newcastle University and since the age of 16 I’ve printed my artwork onto T-shirts, so when I came back to London in June 2011, I set up Serge, starting with the first collection of tees.

What will distinguish Serge DeNimes denim from all the other denim brands out there? Denim has got to last so the quality of the denim will be really good – the best, in fact! Also the cut is obviously very important so I’ll be spending a lot of time making sure that’s right. Then, bringing in little details to make the pieces stand out, such as different colours on the stitching etc. My vision for the denimwear is still evolving which is why I want to take my time and get it right, starting with the accessories we’re introducing.

The Serge man is young, style-conscious and out there living their dream – doing something they love, being passionate and creative. Where does the SDN name come from? The name is related to the origin of denim. The term ‘serge’ was coined for the way the cotton was woven in Nîmes, France. DeNîmes (meaning ‘of Nîmes’) eventually became the word denim which we all know today! I was researching the history as I plan to introduce denim pieces to the brand and I wanted the name to reflect where I see the brand is headed.

Can you describe your personal style in just 3 words? Urban, eclectic, laid-back. You’ve mentioned that style-wise you’re inspired by the 70’s and the 90’s... what is it that draws you to those decades?

Your latest range of t-shirts features illustrations of Kanye West, President Obama and Lil Wayne. Why those three?

When I was a kid I always used to look up to my dad’s style. I used to raid his wardrobe and have loads of his old 70’s jackets. Also watching films from around that period, there was some really cool styling going on. In terms of the 90’s I love the whole leather jacket and big-tee vibe that was going on. I like to mix and match a little bit of everything!

When it came to doing the new range of tees I was just looking to what was inspiring me. I’m big into music and listening to a lot of hip hop right now, especially Lil Wayne and Kanye. I was originally going to do three rappers with Jay-Z as well, but then decided to mix it up a bit and throw in another iconic figure so I went with Obama ‘cus I think he has a cool vibe and comes across as very laid-back, different to your usual president.

What made you decide to set up your style blog proudlockstyle.com? I often get asked about the clothes I wear, so I thought this would be a great way to give people a direct insight into the clothes and brands that I like. I’m actually going to develop the blog into a full site. There’ll be a streetstyle section, collaborations with different brands,

What can we expect from Serge in 2013?

Some tips from your business head please: how do you juggle running a fashion brand alongside being a TV star, staying fit, plus globe-trotting and having an exciting social life?

One of the main points of Serge is I want it to be a platform for young upcoming artists and fashion designers. I am keen to encourage young people in any way I can, and one way I plan to do this is by using the Serge website to showcase talent online. Serge will be linking more strongly the music and art elements of the design process. We are starting Serge Sessions, which will feature up and coming musicians, releasing one artist a month through our YouTube channel. I will also be launching a pop up store in an art gallery displaying my mother’s photography which featured on the Rio collection of tees.

To be fair I do struggle and I’m having to cut down on my social life a little at the moment to concentrate on all my projects. I try to keep the partying to the weekend and work hard during the week. But it’s not like they’re all separate entities: the style blog ties in with the brand and the show gives it all great exposure. When I’m out socialising I meet new people and chat to them about what I’m working on. I try to go to the gym every morning at 7am. Starting early gets the endorphins going and keeping fit keeps my mind ticking. Healthy body, healthy mind, and all that! Any advice for other new aspiring designers?

I would say, stay true to your style and constantly push yourself in order to exceed expectations. There is so much competition out there, and in order to stay one step ahead you have to live it and love it. Be aware of your surroundings, take it in and expand using your individuality. What has been your proudest moment so far since you started the brand? It would have to be seeing my first collection alongside Acne, in the Men’s Lab at Harrods. What has been the most difficult part of getting Serge DeNîmes up and running? The hardest part was at the very beginning, trying to find a factory and setting up the business itself. This was all new to me at the time, and was a much harder process than I had originally hoped. But as they say, nothing comes easy.

We are also launching lots of new products, from sweats to hoodies, new jewellery and iPhone cases as well as some awesome products in line with another brand that will be announced later on this year. All in all we are extremely excited for what 2013 holds for Serge!!

You’re well known for appearing in Made In Chelsea. Londoners are often accused of thinking nothing exists north of the capital, but you spent your university years in Newcastle. How did you find living “oop-north’?! I absolutely loved it!! Newcastle is a great city and because I was there studying, it remains a special place to me. The learning experience I had there very much provided me with the confidence to create my brand. I love living in London, and it is definitely home, but Newcastle was a great place for me to begin the journey of working out exactly what I wanted to do. We’ve heard rumours of a spin off TV show focused purely on you and your projects. Can you reveal anything? Ha! I am not sure where you heard that from…but it sounds like a great show! ;)

The Editeur first opened in Chester in 2011, a joint venture between fashion entrepreneurs Annabel Mount-Kirk and Adam Williams.

Though it began life as a designer lingerie boutique – reaching the finals of the Drapers Lingerie Retailer of the Year in its first year of trading – The Editeur now offers an “edited selection” of designer clothing, footwear, accessories and shoes. Their fantastic and exclusive range of designers includes Red Valentino, Moschino Cheap & Chic, Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti, Missoni, Pinko, Farhi by Nicole Farhi, MW Matthew Williamson, Alice by Temperley, Acne and DVF Diane von Furstenberg. Annabel and Adam’s dreams of online expansion and opening more boutiques around the country are already well underway with an award-winning website and the introduction of a new south Manchester store in Hale village. The Hale store is an exciting addition to the Editeur family as it sees the boutique branching out into designer menswear. Stocking the likes of Lagerfeld, Gant, Hackett, Duchamp and Paul Smith, it is quickly gaining popularity with stylish suburbanites. Commercial Director, Adam Williams, is proud of the store’s recent refurbishment, which has seen the ground floor transformed into a more masculine-friendly space. An area previously dominated by clean, minimalist whites is now a sanctuary of gunmetal greys, tan browns and navy blues. The decor creates a warm, inviting atmosphere, which is enlivened with idiosyncratic flourishes: a black bowler hat – the quintessential symbol of an English gentleman – rests on an old leather chest, whilst stag antler clothes hooks in the changing rooms evoke the thrill of the hunt. Service at The Editeur is very much about creating a personal one-on-one rapport with clients. The staff are welcoming, knowledgeable and quick to suggest pairings and combinations, as though addressing a close friend rather than a customer. In response to the success of the menswear collection in the Hale boutique, the range is soon to be included in The Editeur’s online offering, but there is still something to be said for the high street retail experience. Browsing the womenswear floor, we particularly liked the look and feel of the delicate and floaty, yet bold and vibrant tops by Hale Bob – the LA label favoured by glamorous superstars such as Sofia Vergara, Eva Longoria, Cindy Crawford and Heidi Klum. How did you hear about Face and Body? A friend of mine heard about the competition and encouraged me to enter.

What did you enjoy the most about the photo shoot? I had a fantastic day trying on lots of things – it’s been really good fun. I loved the Vivienne Westwood top. I adore her as a designer, because she truly knows what women want and how to work with a woman’s figure. (See Jo in Vivienne Westwood on

It was quite a coincidence as I have been modelling since I was about 12 years old, so I thought it would be great fun to participate in the competition and a perfect opportunity to meet new people and get more experience in this industry.

When I go out my style is a bit like André 3000 – sophisticated, with pocket squares and smart detail.

I like all things really. When it comes to daywear, I like to keep it casual and comfortable, but still quirky. In the evening I try to vamp it up a bit more and make an effort. I like clothes that are put together well with a bit of thought process behind them, but that are still comfortable.

Who and what inspires you? I’m currently studying textile design at the University of Manchester and I take a lot of inspiration from music and art. I especially enjoy going to live music shows. Fashion-wise I am a big fan of the young models like Lindsey Wixson and Daisy Lowe.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

What do you think the future holds for yourself and modelling? Having worked as a model for so many years, with some of the biggest brands including Calvin Klein, I have decided to open up my very own modelling agency. It’s called Vanita and is a new project of mine, but I have very big plans for it.

What are your dreams for your business?

I love anything fashion and art related. I visit lots of exhibitions and enjoy studying art in all its forms. I have also recently begun to take an interest in architecture and would like to learn more about it.

Being based in Manchester, I want to grow my business and hope to see it expand to become the best agency in the northwest. Longer term, I would love to see our models walk at the major fashion shows in London, New York, Milan and Paris.

A big passion of mine is to go to new cities. Coming from Sheffield, Manchester is still new to me so I enjoy exploring and finding new places to go to. Manchester is great because you only have to turn around the corner and you will see something new. It’s always interesting!

As for myself, I plan to continue modelling and would love to secure contracts with brands like DKNY and Dolce & Gabbana one day, because I want to be that guy on the billboard.

Jo was first in the make-up chair. Make up artist Charlie Murray emphasised her eyes creating a dramatic look.

Once the Face and Body winners had been announced, the preparations started! Usually when art directing I would cast the models based on the theme of the shoot but in this case things had to be worked the other way around. With Jamie’s classic handsome look and Jo’s beautiful porcelain skin, we decided to go for a retro vibe. The focus was on the models, so we kept the clothes and photography simple and elegant.

Jamie only needed a small amount of grooming to make sure he was picture perfect.

To make a classic shoot like this work, good tailoring is extremely important. I selected a beautifully cut suit from Acne at Selfridges Exchange Square and a selection of cocktail style dresses from Harvey Nichols, Manchester.

Both models were naturals in front of the camera and with photographer Layla Sailor on her usual form, we had many fab pics to choose from – making the final edit was the most difficult part of the job!

Agapanthus Interiors Stockport’s Hillgate and Underbank are fast becoming hotspots for new and inspiring independent retail. Manchester Art Gallery is hosting a major exhibition of 28 recent works by Calcutta-born, London-based artist, Raqib Shaw. Shaw’s art is extraordinary – his paintings, sculptures and works on paper depict epic narratives and other worlds which draw on multiple sources, from mythology and religion, to poetry, literature, art history, textiles and decorative arts. Enter the main exhibition on the second floor and one of the first things that strikes you is the sheer size of the individual works on display. From a distance, many of the large-scale paintings look incredibly lush and inviting – glittering masterpieces bursting with colour and texture.

Close-up, they are no less impressive. Shaw’s technical skill is astounding, and you can easily get lost marvelling at the beauty and intricate detail of the flora and fauna he has crafted from acrylic, enamel, glitter and rhinestones. But look closer still and you begin to notice things you had not previously seen. In amongst the delicate foliage, strange hybrid beasts, with wild eyes and bared teeth, hack at one another with raised swords. Blood-spattered heads fall to the ground. Birds peck at disembodied faces and single eyeballs on red stalks proliferate like weeds. The effect is disorientating to say the least, but this “push-pull” is at the heart of Shaw’s work and a large part of what makes it, and him, so fascinating. You find yourself wondering what motivates him to create such contradictory scenes that at once encompass intense natural beauty, violence, sexual deviance and gore. Titles such as “Absence of God” and “Paradise Lost” give some clues and encourage you to draw your own conclusions. Shaw has referred to his works as a personal diary – expressing dreams, fears and fantasies. He has said that the fantastical worlds he has created can be read: “as a commentary on my own experience of living in this society, and of being alive.” Not all of his work, however, will appeal to everyone. Some pieces seem to strain the boundaries of taste and decorum, going for more out-and-out shock value. The painted bronze sculpture entitled “Adam” is a good example – it depicts a giant, jewel-encrusted lobster in a violent, sexual embrace with a bird-headed man. Though the lobster is overlaid with a gamut of beautiful, semi-precious stones (black diamonds, sapphires and rubies), the overall effect is nevertheless disturbing, and closer inspection only renders it more repulsive. But one can argue that truly great art ought to provoke a response, whether intellectual or emotional – and this exhibition easily does both. Unusual, astonishing, provocative, we believe you are unlikely to see anything else quite like it. Better yet, Shaw’s vision is not limited to the 28 pieces which adorn the gallery’s interior. His imagination is so grand, so expansive, it is matched only by his generosity. Thanks to Shaw, Mosley Street has been invigorated with a splash of welcome colour. Willow and driftwood twine through the railings that run round the outside of the gallery and everywhere delicate, bright flowers bloom and burst forth as if to proclaim: “Spring is finally here.” Unlike Adam inside, the overall effect is immediately cheering, and for that alone, we cannot thank him enough.

Food Review at the Close House Hotel As I breathed in the crisp, fresh Northumberland air and looked up at the stately façade of Close House, the stresses and strains of the city I had left behind quickly began to fall away... My suite, The Eden, seemed aptly named – a luxurious space with an emphasis on contemporary comfort, simply yet tastefully decorated in muted golds and chocolate browns. I was quick to take advantage of my en suite’s free-standing ceramic bathtub before getting ready for dinner. The hotel has two restaurants: Argent D’or in the main house, which is open to all, and No 19 in the hotel’s Club House, which is open to residents and golf members only. The three-course dinner at Argent D’or was definitely the highlight of my stay. Awarded two AA Rosettes only a few months after it opened in February last year, this is occasion dining at its finest, where the quality and presentation of the food is matched by the surroundings in which it is served. The dining room is elegance personified. Sophisticated but not showy, the colour scheme of silver and gold is expertly employed to create an atmosphere of class and refinement, without crossing over into gaudy garishness. The attention to detail even extends to the custommade china, which is emblazoned with the hotel’s symbol, a golden colt.

Close House has 31 bedrooms in total – 19 in the main house and 12 in the courtyard. The Courtyard rooms all take their names from golf course architect Harry Colt, who participated in the design of over 300 golf courses.

Food In March, STYLEetc were invited to stay the night at Close House Hotel – a privately owned, Grade II listed mansion dating back to the 18th century, approximately eight miles outside of the centre of Newcastle.

To start, I had the pressing of Goosnargh duck, with foie gras, prunes and toasted brioche, which was bursting with fleshy, gamey goodness. However, looking over to my neighbour, I found myself coveting her sautéed local wild mushrooms with toasted sour dough and crispy poached egg. I had no such distractions with my main course. The venison loin with glazed baby vegetables, pomme Anna and juniper sauce was succulent and sumptuous – the sweet, rich flesh of the venison a deep velvety red, served on a bed of braised cabbage. My only complaint is that there wasn’t more of it. I then earned the envy of my dining companions once they sampled my coconut pannacotta. This perfectly formed delight wobbled invitingly at the slightest provocation of my spoon. It dissolved on the tongue in a pleasurable rush of silky smooth creaminess – but it tasted even better when paired with the tart, tangy hit of the passion fruit sorbet and the pineapple, which was delicately flavoured with the slightest hint of aniseed. After dinner, we enjoyed coffee and cocktails in the Champagne Bar and Lounge. The Lounge perfectly complements the Argent D’or in décor with its heavy drapery, hanging chandeliers, crackling log fire and Botticelli cherub tea lights.

Settling into one of the velour armchairs, sipping flutes of champagne cocktails made with Moët Chandon, served by the friendly and attentive staff, you can’t help but feel relaxed and wonderfully spoiled. If business or pleasure ever bring you to the North East, Close House would be a worthy consideration. For golf aficionados, the two premier 18 hole golf courses, Golf Academy, Driving Range and affiliation with golf champion Lee Westwood make it hugely attractive. But if you are more inspired by the prospect of a relaxing mini break with fine dining, luxurious accommodation and elegant interiors, Close House is ideal. Set in the heart of stunning countryside but only a stone’s throw from a vibrant city, it’s the perfect way to unwind and explore the beauty and culture of Northumberland.

City Break | Munich Munich is a city known for its beer, culture and rich history. Many would immediately think of visiting for the infamous Oktoberfest. However, with flights between Manchester and Munich costing from as little as £26 (incl. taxes) each way it makes an ideal city break location at any time of the year. Whether you are looking to explore architectural delights, indulge in retail therapy, browse art galleries or let loose on an exuberant night out, Munich has all this to offer and more. Here’s what Kathryn Bell managed to pack into two days and two nights in the Barvarian capital:

Munich I arrived late into Munich, but easily caught the shuttle train (€11) from the airport straight to the city. My first night’s stay was at the ideally located Louis hotel, a stone’s throw from the central station of Marianplatz. Despite it being 11pm on a Wednesday, with only three days to see what this city had to offer, I was eager to get out and about. I left the hotel and wandered down the back alleys, looking for something interesting. As luck would have it after a mere five minutes stroll I stumbled across Pusser’s Bar. Named after the oldest rum in the world, this cocktail bar is one of Munich’s longest standing watering holes, said to have been a favourite with visiting Americans such as Ernest Hemmingway, F.Scott Fitzgerald and Gene Kelly back in the day. A treat for anyone wishing to savour some perfectly mixed drinks accompanied by live jazz music, I recommend their signature – the aptly named ‘Painkiller’ (€9). A delicious tropical concoction, it certainly ensured my first night’s sleep was a sound one!

An avid fashion enthusiast, I couldn’t wait to check out Maximilianstraße, Munich’s answer to Bond Street. With every store from Chloe to Bottega Veneta, it didn’t disappoint! The wide streets and gothic architecture made everything feel more grand and I enjoyed my morning stroll, stopping for a light breakfast of tomato and mozzarella omelette (€7.50) at Brenner’s - a stylish bistro tucked in behind Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten Kempinski.

Awakening in the Louis Hotel was charming, with a perfect view of Viktualienmarkt Square and the surrounding traditional buildings. The busy marketplace was bustling below my balcony – an abundance of food stalls selling everything from sausages and hot food to pastries and beer.

To really get a feel for Munich it is worth resisting the urge to take public transport and making the effort to walk everywhere. For the rest of the day this is exactly what I did, and I came across some delightful places in the process. Check out the city map overleaf showing my three favourite hotspots.

After breakfast I wandered down Maximilianplatz, admiring the luxuries on display in the windows as I followed the road to Marienplatz square. Rich in history, the square has breathtaking architecture with the New City Hall on the north side and the Old City Hall on the east side. Café Glokenspeil is a good place to rest your feet. Take the lift five floors up, ask for a balcony table and observe the hustle and bustle of the square from above, whist indulging in the German tradition of Kaffee und Kuchen (coffee and cake).

The Diary

Kirsty joined MCRFW as their Head of Fashion this January, and brings with her a decade of experience working with luxury brands and high profile clientele around the world. Previous roles include a place on net-a-porter’s VIP management team and styling manager at Selfridges where she was responsible for their London Studio Services department launch. Having also explored the design pathway herself (her label KirstiMairie exhibited twice at LFW), Kirsty is well-placed to understand the challenges facing the designers she will be supporting through her work with MCRFW.

WAKE-UP! The first thing I do every morning is scan twitter to keep up to date on what’s happening in the fashion news. I live around the corner from the office so I don’t have to go far, but I cannot function without a morning coffee at my desk. MORNING I check my calendar and emails before heading out to meetings. Typical morning meetings would be with our headline sponsor Boohoo, the MCRFW ambassadors, and with David Bell from CBJWT advertising agency who helps me come up with great ideas for branding the company’s direction. Brainstorming new concepts to ensure the company continues moving forwards make up a big part of my day. People in Manchester are incredibly passionate about the city and at every meeting I am inspired by how much people want to come together and make this city great! LUNCH-TIME I grab anything I can between meetings, but if I have time I always look for new places to give me some variety. I am a Northern Quarter girl and love all the amazing cafés and bars in the area.
