Roses Round Up

design team of the year mark Formed in 2003 and since then their client base has grown, crossing a variety of different sectors. Although a small team, they have shown to be a very experienced team, working with some of the world’s largest brands. Their work entered into the Roses Design Awards has echoed that this agency is one to watch, as they continue on their path of providing great design work with excellent value and service. NOMINEES in this category: Glad Tayburn The Neighbourhood

The annual Roses Design Awards bowed out in style last month when a host of Britain’s top design and architecture talent assembled at Manchester’s Mercure Hotel to hear who would emerge victorious in a tussle for the top. Now, with hangovers finally abating, we can revisit some of the night’s big winners with the benefit of a clear head. The North West venue provided the perfect platform from which to celebrate some stunning pieces of work to be completed over the past 12 months with architecture firm Reiach & Hall having more to celebrate than most having picked up the prestigious architectural practice of the year accolade. The practice proved to be as permanent a fixture on the winner’s podium as the lectern itself with the practice scooping gold awards for Dundee House and Maggie’s

architect practice of the year reiach + hall This practice founded in 1965 has grown enormously over the years and now employs a total of 29 staff that enjoy a very broad portfolio of projects over 47 years in the profession from flat conversions to major regional hospitals. The practice believes that this diversity of scale and use allows each sector to enrich and inform the others while keeping our thinking fresh. This practice constantly review what building means, encouraging discussion and reflection while placing great store in the talents and commitment of the individuals who contribute collectively to each project.

Lanarkshire alongside silver for an extension of Stobhill Hospital and bronze for Glasgow Royal Infirmary. A Chairman’s Award for their design work on a Borders Weavers Cottage proved to be the icing on a particularly glittering cake although Reiach & Hall didn’t have things entirely their own way - Aedas won the Grand Prix Award with their Darwen Aldridge Community Academy building. Over in the design camp meanwhile Neighbourhood emerged as the bars biggest patrons – after they netted the best in show design Grand Prix award for their work on ‘A Kid in a Sweetshop’. The Neighbourhood team were in good company with Glad and Mark picking up the Chairman’s Award and Design Team of the Year respectively. If one thing is clear from this year’s roster it is that 2012’s hopefuls have a hard act to follow.

Dundee Council Offices, Dundee Dundee House is a rich layering of interwoven narratives that attempt to create a building that is a product of its brief yet is firmly grounded in the City of Dundee. The building responds to a very particular site, boldly retaining an historic industrial building while adding an uncompromising contemporary structure. The building meets a demanding operational brief yet creates an inspiring place to work. The building addresses the idea of Civics and the role of serving Dundee’s citizens through an architectural exploration of open public space and through acting as a civic marker in the city. The Dundee Council Offices is a collaboration between the old stone DC Thomson comic printing building with the much larger new administration and public services building. The new building uses the old building as its front door, realising a lofty loggia thereby providing an opportunity for the citizens of Dundee to engage with the building through a new venue for civic life, imagine a coffee shop, a florist, Christmas recitals by primary schools, art events and installations. Inside, the new building has been designed to help the council adopt modern methods of working and provides seven storey of modern sustainable office space. The large floor plates are designed to enable cross discipline working between departments. While at the same time the external and internal light wells allow departmental organisation to form smaller working groups. Breakout areas also animate and enliven the large plans at key points. A great deal of emphasis was placed on material selection and detail. A public building has to last, it has to be durable yet it needs to be attractive and approachable. The selected materials will improve with age from the quite beautiful brick that gives a clue to the site’s industrial past to the finely engineered glazing that has an eye on the future. The drawings and photographs attempt to give a flavour of the design process for Dundee City Council’s new Dundee House headquarters. Illustrations however can only hint at the wealth of creative ideas and processes that were worked through in the development of the building, many discarded, some adopted. It has been a thoroughly imaginative and productive if demanding process that has resulted in a building of great strength and dignity. The photographs of the completed building illustrate the success of a carefully selected material palette. They also show how the design gives the city a building that has presence and gravitas in the townscape without being bombastic or monumental. 3D Visualisation
