THE BAHAMAS

Empyrean Paradise The Bahamas – a maritime haven perfect for a chill time out.

SITUATED OFF the Florida coast, the archipelago is made up of around 700 islands and more than 2400 cays. Once a playground for pirates, the turquoise waters and white sandy beaches make the area an ideal spot to loosen up and unwind. Here are some of the best experiences on offer in the Bahamas.

By Phua Jun Han

DIVING IN ANDROS

Photo: Rüdiger Stehn

Divers would want to head to the island of Andros, which possesses a variety of interesting dive sites. Access the world’s third longest barrier reef, Andros Barrier Reef, here, home to around 160 species of coral and fish. Admire the brimming marine diversity and natural rock formations as you experience a breathtaking wall dive off the deep Tongue of the Ocean. Channel your inner intrigue as you discover the mysterious blue holes and the mystifying shipwrecks.

SWIMMING WITH PIGS

MAGICAL ELEUTHERA

Fancy dipping in the waters and floating amongst these adorable pigs? Residing in the largely uninhabited Big Major Cay, many legends exist as to how they ended up in the Bahamas. Here, you can interact freely with them and marvel at the unique sight of the animals enjoying themselves in the crystal clear waters.

This thin, pretty archipelago houses plenty of beautiful attractions. Bask in blissful romance as you saunter along the Pink Sand Beach (yes, literally pink sand) on Harbour Island. Set out on an expedition as you explore the many caves that dot Eleuthera. Be amazed as you stand on the Glass Window Bridge and witness two different imperial shades of the clear blue waters on either side of the “bridge”.

FUN FACT

The official bird of The Bahamas is the West Indian Flamingo. As you journey around the country, you might be able to spot these pinkcoloured animals.

ICE FISHING is a gruelling sport even for the most dedicated. It requires absolute patience while the glacial air makes every attempt to freeze your nerves solid. All this effort only makes the feeling of successfully reeling in a fish that much sweeter. As any experienced ice fisher will tell you, there are some amazing locations for this sport all over the world, but in no other country are there as many as in Canada. Titled the ice fishing country of the world, Canada boasts some of the most famous ice fishing spots globally.

Ice Fishing: What You Need To Know Ice fishing is the next step for anyone who adores fishing. By Caillin Rosario

“Challenge yourself with this amazing sport in the winter months of Canada, between December to February. And remember… stay warm!”

Nighthawk Lake

Lake Simcoe Bay of Quinte Lake Superior Lake Nipissing

Essential equipment needed:

• Ice drill/ ice auger • Warm winter clothing • Ice rods • Ice fishing tackles • A 20-litre bucket to be used to hold your catch and work as a seat

• Life vest

Where to go and what you’ll find there: • Lake Simcoe - Pike, Walleye, Small/ Large Mouth Bass • Nipissing Lake, Nipissing - Jumbo Perch, Bass, Walleye • Black Bay, Lake Superior - Massive Perch • Nighthawk Lake, Timmons - Rainbow Trout, Mooneye, Splake • Bay Of Quinte, Belleville - Trophy Walleye

What’s the difference between ice fishing and normal fishing? • Due to the cold waters, fish put up less of a fight allowing you to use lighter (and thus weaker) lines. • Due to the lack of light under the ice, ice fishing requires a lure that is extremely efficient at grabbing the attention of fish through colour or light refraction.

t THE THISTLEGORM SHIPWRECK Dive into a forgotten era at the bottom of the Red Sea - into the corroded wreckage of one of the most famous and historically rich shipwrecks in the world. Once a British armed freighter, SS Thistlegorm was sunk by a German long-range bomber in the thick of World War II and is now home to glorious marine wildlife. Most of the ship remains intact and remarkably frozen in time, including ammunition, Bedford trucks, BSA motorcycles, Enfield rifles and other war supplies. Liveaboards (ranging from 4-15 days) are recommended to do this impressive wreckage justice; a wide range of comfort levels offer different experiences aboard, from MV Emperor Elite’s unrivalled luxury to a shorter, more budget-friendly dive with King Snefro 5.

p SHARK-DIVING A short 1.5 hour boat ride from Placencia off the Caribbean coast of Belize lies the Gladden Spit & Silk Caye Marine Reserve, one of the best destinations to swim with the largest fish in the world - docile whale sharks. Contrary to popular belief, whale sharks are completely harmless and accustomed to swimming alongside humans. Whale shark encounters often leave even the most seasoned divers wonderstruck. Traditionally, April and May remain the best periods to drop in on these mild creatures - specifically 2 days before the full moon till 10 days after. p THE SILFRA FISSURE

DID YOU KNOW?

You can drink the glacial water of Silfra directly during your dive. That’s how pure the water there becomes after its natural filtration!

This is where the Earth cracks open. Located in Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in itself, the Silfra fissure is the only diveable one of its kind, straddling the tectonic boundaries of the Eurasian and the North American plates. The frigid water, or rather meltwater, is supplied by the nearby Langjökull glacier and has been filtered through porous rock for close to a century, thus its longest underwater visibility in the world that may cause divers to lose their sense of depth and induce vertigo. Explore the three sections, the Silfra Hall, Cathedral and Lagoon, each boasting its own unique topography, with Dive Iceland or Magmadive for more personalised trips.

FEATURE ICELAND A short bus ride from Reykjavik and from Keflavik Airport, Blue Lagoon is a convenient and worthwhile stop. Its opaque milkyblue hue is an illusion - the waters are actually creamy white thanks to the silica, only appearing blue when light hits it. Blue Lagoon’s soothing mineral-rich geothermal baths contain silica, salts and algae with cleansing and exfoliating properties that can be fully enjoyed with their unique homemade cosmetics. For a thriftier skincare option, simply pile some clayey white silica from the waters onto your face for an all-natural mask. On a dark winter night, visiting the Blue Lagoon proves to be a refresher for the heart, mind and soul - you may even catch the Northern Lights.

WATER COLOURS

These waters are dyed the most brilliant of hues. By Cheryl Kho

ONCE AGAIN, Mother Nature proves herself to be the most creative of artists we have witnessed. Her creativity manifests itself in the flamboyant multitude of colours that paint these waters the vibrant hues science cannot fully vouch for.

Lake Hillier, Middle Island AUSTRALIA The colour of fresh bubble gum, Australia’s incredible Lake Hillier embodies the old adage, ‘seeing is believing’. Separated from the Southern Ocean by a thin strip of beach, the contrast between the ocean’s azure waters and the strawberry shade of Hillier is striking. While the exact science behind Australia’s peculiar water body is uncertain, the multitude of Dunaliella salina microalgae that the 600m-long lake houses is believed to be responsible. For a view of the lake from afar, opt for either a cruise trip or a plane ride. Alternatively, get up close and personal with nature’s pink oddity by taking a dip in its salty but harmless waters.

Rio Tinto SPAIN Spain’s notoriously poisonous river flows through the southwestern region of the country and is, in fact, the most polluted, most acidic river in the world due to its long history of mining. The heavily contaminated suspension of primarily iron dyes the water its signature rust red, feeding the extremophile aerobic microorganisms that thrive in the river. Take an old-school trip in an ancient 19th-century train to explore the Martian landscape of Rio Tinto that has even caught the eye of NASA scientists. In fact, Rio Tinto was recently made the area a testing ground for Mars-bound equipment, in light of its remarkable similarities to chemical and geological conditions on Mars.

Emerald Lakes NEW ZEALAND It comes as no surprise that the Emerald Lakes, by its namesake, should boast sparklingly green waters. The hallowed Tongariro National Park of New Zealand, is home to these coloured lakes pooled within the depths of massive explosion craters near the summit of Mount Tongariro. Under the midday sun, the waters gleam an unreal emerald the result of light reflecting off of the white deposits of marl. Take on the 12-mile hiking route of Tongariro Alpine Crossing to see it for yourself. As inviting as the limegreen surface may seem, it is not safe for sipping or dipping in.

WaterWorlds A closer look at water-based communities around the globe. By Phua Jun Han

PERHAPS USED to living on land, are you ready to test the waters? Here are societies, past and present, whose lives revolve around bodies of water.

Islas Uros Forced off the shores by the Incas centuries ago, the Uros had to come up with a solution to survive. The result: an ingenious idea of living on the lake itself. Made entirely of buoyant totora reeds, the “island” hovering on the Lake Titicaca was completely handcrafted by the ancient islanders. Gain an insight into their traditional way of living as you wander amongst the still-present society of Uros. Do not be afraid to jump on a (certainly safe!) handwoven reed boat for an escapade on the high-altitude lake. For those keen to experience their customary lifestyle, consider a homestay opportunity with a local family.

Tonle Sap Floating Villages CAMBODIA

Islas Uros Tonle Sap

22

Cambodia’s collection of floating villages is largely situated on or around the Tonle Sap, a large freshwater lake with an adjoining river. While some platforms were indeed built to float on the water surface, many actually utilise tall and narrow stilts, enabling the houses to remain intact during the wet season. Between April and November, incidentally the ideal time to visit, the lake expands in both size and depth, showcasing the villages in their full glory. Hop on a boat to explore the community. Gaze at the unusual buildings that make up the flooded town and catch a glimpse of the locals going about their daily lives.

Wuzhen

Wuzhen Water Town CHINA

An intricate system of waterways forms the foundation of this old ancient town. Stone bridges ascend over the canals, creating an ethereal landscape, and warm, roofed houses that look straight out of a Chinese ink painting line the water channels. Be sure to stroll along the waterways and admire the brilliant amalgamation of human and nature in the beautifully crafted town. Spice up your trip with a glint of history with a visit to the Ancient Bed Museum or the Folks Customs Museum. Entertain yourselves by catching a shadow puppet play or a martial arts performance at the town’s East Area.

Giethoorn

NETHERLANDS Fairy-tales and fantasies align in the picturesque, quaint and sleepy village of Giethoorn. Lush greenery and charming 19th century farmhouses dot the town, but what truly characterises this Dutch village is their one-of-a-kind transport system. Replacing the usual cars and roads are a comprehensive network of canals and whisper boats (boats that run on noiseless engines). The cosy cottages and luscious scenery are best enjoyed via a boat ride. Do explore the option of hiring a punt to float around the hamlet on your own. Time spent here would prove to be a fresh and whimsical escape from the hustle of the cityscape.

Discover Palau atop a kayak for an idyllic paddle about the surrounding islands or in a wetsuit to explore the deepest reaches of its underwater caves and undisturbed WWII wreckages. Yet Ongeim’l Tketau Jellyfish Lake and its thousands of spongy inhabitants remain Palau’s unrivalled highlight. At its peak, the isolated lake played home to up to 30 million stingless golden jellyfish whose population was severely affected by Palau’s drought conditions in 2016. The decline spurred a 2-year closure of the lake, only recently re-opening for visitors in December last year. While the numbers are not back to optimum level, the jellies are likely to be set for a full recovery. The jellyfish perform a daily migration cycle following the sun. For a truly immersive experience, swim about a hundred feet out into sunlit waters to be surrounded by thousands of them as far as the eye can see. At night, these cnidarians sink 40 feet down into the depths of

the lake. The lower layer of hydrogen sulfide found there is lethal to humans; scuba diving is thus strictly prohibited, also in order to protect the delicate ecosystem of the lake. Be prepared for a short but steep hike up to the lake - comfortable walking shoes are recommended for some traction on the slippery trail. There are also several precautions in place to protect this marine haven. Sunblock is prohibited and guests will be rinsed off by park attendants to prevent contamination. For optimum preservation of these jellies and their habitat, a certified guide must accompany you into Jellyfish Lake. Booking a snorkeling tour is thus the best way for a full experience at the lake, as well as at other additional dive sites of Palau. Rock Islands, in particular, makes

Tides of Treasure Behold the chronicled majesty of the Egyptian Nile. By Phua Jun Han WITHOUT THE Nile River, the ancient legendary Egyptian civilisation would have not existed. The Nile was the once-mighty kingdom’s “elixir of life”, blessing the people with food, water, transport and fertile soil. Thousands of years later, remnants of the age-old empire line the momentous waterway and, in culmination with the river’s panoramic natural allure, make it the ideal destination for an idyllic river cruise.

FEATURE

Aswan There is plenty to see in this city that sits on the eastern bank of the Nile. The 3500-year-old Unfinished Obelisk lies in its quarry, a symbol of the architectural heights reached by the ancient people. Fast forward centuries later, the Aswan High Dam, built across the river, is a showcase of modern technological advancement. The western bank is home ground to the curious 7th-century Monastery of St Simeon. The Tombs of the Nobles, important remnants of the Old and Middle Kingdom, lie close by. On the island of Agilkia slightly south of Aswan, the ruins of the Temple of Philae stand tall and proud. The worship ground of the Egyptian goddess Isis was extracted from its original location on the flooding Philae Island and reconstructed in its present location, in a stunning successful UNESCO rescue effort.

GETTING THERE AND AROUND: Cruises typically set sail from Aswan, up north to Luxor, or travel in the opposite direction. Journey length differs, from four nights to up to fifteen nights. There are a few types of vessels to choose from, varying in luxury and comfort, depending on your budget.

Approaching Edfu and Esna As you leave the vicinity of actionpacked Aswan and sail northwards (assuming your journey begins at Aswan), be sure to revel in the wonder of the voyage itself. Marvel at the palm trees and reeds that rest on the banks. Revere the kingfishers, the ospreys and the geese as the ancient Egyptians did. Or simply relish the company of your fellow sojourners. You will eventually reach the city of Edfu, which is where the Temple of Horus is situated. For centuries buried in desert sand, this Ptolemaic temple is remarkably well-preserved. Be awed as you saunter past the inscribed walls and exquisitely carved monuments. 53 kilometres north of Edfu is the market town Esna. The key attraction here is the Temple of Khnum, built some nine metres below the surrounding ground.

Luxor Prepare to be genuinely awestruck when the city of Luxor, dubbed the world’s greatest open-air museum, comes into view. The Temple of Karnak, known to be the largest religious building ever constructed can be found on the east bank. Bask in the absolute grandiosity of the ancient settlers’ house of gods. The dazzling Avenue of Sphinx connects the Karnak Temple to the Luxor Temple, another stunning archaic relic. Return at night to admire the lighted site that now possesses a striking yet eerie and mysterious pall. Delve into afterlife business in the storied Valley of Kings on the other bank. The ancient royal burial ground looks deceivingly unflattering at first glance, but what lies beneath the surface is an archaeological and ancient architectural triumph. Put your lingering fears to rest as you enter the fabled Tomb of Tutankhamun or the Tomb of Ramesses VI.

Saving the Deep Blue

IT COMES as no surprise that the ocean is now in danger. Due to pollution and climate change, the underwater ecosystem and those who live in it are suffering. Fortunately, there are ways to help conserve the deep. From simple steps such as removing single-use plastics from our day-to-day lives to beach clean-ups, here are a few small things you can do to help save the ocean.

By Julia Lachica

Say NO to Single-Use Items Single-use plastics such as plastic bags, straws, bottles and styrofoam take-out packets are one of the main pollutants of the deep. With millions of tons of plastic being thrown into the ocean each year, these single-use plastics pose a risk to the marine ecosystem, choking the sea creatures as well as destroying their homes. By limiting our use of plastics, we will be able to save marine life and lessen landfill.

Volunteer From participating in beach clean-ups to creating art out of the litter collected, volunteering can be done the way you want it to be. The time and effort you make to show your support is one of the best ways you can raise awareness in conserving the underwater world.

$

Donate There are charities spearheading solutions to help conserve the underwater world through the donations of many. These organisations use these funds to invest in protecting and researching methods that will ensure a brighter future for our ocean. A little effort goes a long way.

The Legendary Lakes of Croatia The beauty of Plitvice Lakes National Park guarantees an experience like no other. By Caillin Rosario BY SIMPLY PEERING into the pristine waters of Croatia’s Plitvice Lakes, enter an otherworldly trance as you watch an abundance of fishes dance around in their blue underwater world. Located in Plitvice Lakes National Park, all lakes in the vicinity are interconnected via many small rivers. These lakes are separated into two categories: the upper lakes and the lower lakes.

The national park offers more than just clear blue waters, it gets far more interesting. The wildlife in the park is vast, housing various creatures like brown bears, wolves, lynxes and eagles. Do look out for the lakes’ many species of fishes - from rainbow trout to European Chubs. Stroll along the overwater wooden bridges for the best view and observe the schools of aquatic creatures as they swim beneath you. Among the most stunning features of these lakes are the dream-like waterfalls. The greatest of these is funnily enough known as the Big Waterfall, which flows from the end of the lower lakes, while the slightly smaller Galovački Buk flows at the heart of the upper lakes. To complete a round trip around the entire national park, you will need a minimum of eight hours. It is advised to choose specific parts of the park you would like to see unless you’re up for

TRAVEL TIPS ›› Flying off to your dream getaway at the beach? Here are some top pointers that will help you cut out the unpleasant annoyances on your next seaside holiday, and grant you an enjoyable and fulfilling experience. By Phua Jun Han

RESEARCH Decide on your notion of the ideal beach vacation and search up which beach best suits you. You don’t want to be heading to the seaside, and sulking over the fact that there aren’t any good surfing opportunities there, only to realise later on, that another beach just twenty minutes away is the surfers’ paradise.

KEEP SAFE Everyone loves the clear blue waters, but also be aware that the sea is a dangerous place. Keep within a safe distance from the shore if you are not a very strong swimmer. Equip yourselves with skills such as life-saving techniques and learn how to spot the lethal rip currents. Always remember that safety simply cannot be compromised.

HYDRATE Especially when you are engrossed in the fun beach activities, keep in mind to drink lots of water. The constant exposure to the hot sun will quickly dehydrate you. Ignoring this absolute necessity might cause you to fall ill while on your long-awaited vacation. If you are planning to stay at the beach for long, carry more than one water bottle with you.

SKIN PROTECTION Naturally, you will be exposed to the painful sunrays and be prone to itchy bug bites. Don’t forget to bring along (and use!) your sunscreen and insect repellent. Applying the sunscreen once is never enough. Frequently lotion up to avoid ending the day with an unpleasant sunburn.

WEATHER WOES ZIPPERED BAGS You will probably be bringing along a bag to store your books, smartphones, cameras and whatever else you need at the beach, but you can’t miss the zippered bags. They are particularly useful for storing your wet items (used swimsuits, towels etc.), protecting your other belongings from getting damaged.

Certainly, a beach vacation comprises of mostly outdoor activities, but what happens when it rains? Do have a backup indoors plan in the event of gloomy weather. For example, bring along card or board games you can entertain yourselves with under the shelter. Or look up if there are any fun indoor activities within the vicinity of the beach you are visiting.

SPORTS FREEDIVING

FEATURE

TAKE A LEAP

By Julia Lachica

GETTING STARTED Freediving will test your lung capacity and your ability to withstand the pressure as you descend underwater. Even though Freediving is essentially just diving underwater for a period of time, it is still advisable for you to get a basic certificate in freediving. One of the key aspects in freediving is to be relaxed. Sometimes having to think about what lies in the depths of the ocean can get a little intimidating, causing you to feel slightly nervous or hesitant. Being nervous or hesitant while you’re underwater can cause you to run out of oxygen in your system and may even cause you to blackout. Different freediving schools and courses have different techniques to calm the nerves. Freediving can get dangerous, the challenge is not only in descending underwater but also getting back up to the surface. The moment you feel your body has used up at least half of its oxygen supply, it is a signal to ascend back to the surface. This is why it is highly advisable for free-divers, beginners and experts, to dive with a group or with a partner at least.

36

TRAINING Freediving welcomes people from all walks of life. Training for freediving is pretty basic but needs plenty of time to get the hang of. One of the first things you have to get used to is holding your breath for long periods of time. You can start with holding your breath for 30 seconds each day for weeks or months and gradually increase the time when you feel comfortable. Apart from increasing your lung capacity, you must be able to remain calm, especially when you are underwater. Becoming anxious or stressed while diving will cause the heart to quicken, this will trigger responses that relate to stress and anxiety which is heavy breathing. The practice of meditation and/or yoga helps in calming the state of mind and also helps one to focus.

Photo: Michael Liao

FREEDIVING IS EXACTLY what it sounds like, diving freely in the vast open waters. With no breathing equipment, you get to be one with the ocean. Diving into the open waters can be intimidating, but with the right training and practice, it is an experience like no other.

AQUATIC CYCLING

FLOATFIT

Contrary to how it might seem, AquaFit is far from easy. Being a full-body workout, AquaFit uses elements from different exercises such as running and dance. Due to the buoyancy of water, engage in your cardio workout without putting too much strain on your body. AquaFit is also recommended for those recovering from injury as it does not put tension on your joints while still building muscle and improving flexibility. The workouts are also adjustable depending on your fitness level, with instructors giving advice and helping you modify the difficulty of the training.

Take your spin classes to the next level, or in this case, underwater. Just like any other spin class, there are stationary bikes and an instructor to guide and motivate you throughout the class. The only difference is that you will be doing the spin class with half of your body submerged underwater. Being underwater adds more resistance to this low-intensity workout. Unlike your regular spin class that is held on dry land, aquatic spin classes focus not only on the legs, but also different parts of the body.

Incorporating elements from yoga and pilates, FloatFit will test your balance, endurance and muscle strength. This water-based workout will have you standing on an aquabase, an oversized float, where you will have to stay up and do the workouts as instructed. FloatFit is a high-intensity conditioning that requires you to use your entire body. From your legs to your core, FloatFit will keep your adrenaline pumping during the session and leave you feeling sore afterwards.

SPORTS KITESURFING

TRAINING

GETWN BLOAY AW

By Julia

COMBINING ELEMENTS of various extreme sports such as surfing, paragliding, wakeboarding, sailing, and even snowboarding and skateboarding, kitesurfing or kiteboarding requires one to harness the mighty winds with a power kite to manoeuvre through the water.

GETTING STARTED Just like any other extreme sport, kitesurfing requires full body coordination. Getting familiar with the proper postures of the sport and strengthening your muscles further can help in your on-site training and prevent you from getting injured. You could start your workouts with some Vinyasa Yoga, which is usually intensive and dynamic. Not only does Vinyasa Yoga help to strengthen and stretch your muscles, it also aids in the coordination of movement and breathing. A strong back is required to maintain a good posture, both of which are crucial for kitesurfing. Work on strengthening your back by integrating inverted push-ups and lateral pulldown exercises into your routine. These workouts also help to build your biceps, tone your abdominal muscles, train balance and reduce risk of injury.

38

Lachica

When it comes to getting onto the board and getting hold of the power kite, it is highly advisable to approach professionals for lessons and subsequent training. There are in fact Singapore-based companies that offer lessons for beginners. These kitesurfing schools offer a choice of lessons at East Coast Park or at the nearby islands of Bintan and Desaru. Necessary equipment are included in your session, the duration of which last from 2.5 to 5 hours depending on your preference. Coaches will teach you the proper basics of handling the kite and key techniques you will need to master before you can glide swiftly on the water. You will also be taught how to assess weather and water conditions, so as to fully utilise the elements to your advantage and stay safe. For beginners, fret not. The first step to kitesurfing is simply building up the confidence to get started!

The Grand Canyon, located in Arizona, USA, is a five-hour bus trip from famed party city, Las Vegas. To experience the most scenic view of the Canyon, opt for an hour-long trip by helicopter. There is a multitude of activities in the park to satisfy any traveller, but here are four of the most recommended waterthemed choices.

Paddle Boarding

White Water Rafting

Fishing

The waters of the Grand Canyon’s Havasu creek is beyond blue, thus making this spot a more than popular swimming destination. There is no better way to travel across and through the creek than on a paddle board, allowing you to soak up this pristine atmosphere.

The Grand Canyon is home to possibly one of the most adrenaline-packed water sports out there - white water rafting. Take on the raging rapids of Colorado River in a raft with your group and bask in the glory of the Canyon whenever the waters are calm. This activity generally takes a few days, as you will work your way down the river and stop at numerous campsites. Rest assured, you will create memories that last a lifetime.

Home to an abundance of carp and various trout, the Grand Canyon makes for an ideal fishing spot. The best areas are located within the first 60 miles or so down the river from Lees Ferry. Success rates are likely to be higher when the Colorado River runs clear, especially if you are equipped with large, fluorescent orange z-ray lures. Do remember to purchase an Arizona fishing license online prior to your trip.
