UP GRADE

INTUITIVE PHOTOGRAPHY: accessing the camera within

Fey Foong

10

Over the years, particularly at my photo exhibitions, I had many people say to me, “I love the way you captured that moment. How did you do it?” A lovely compliment but I admit I was puzzled, thinking, “Doesn’t everyone do it?” It was later, when a friend asked me to teach her to take photos like mine, that I looked deeper into my approach to photography, in order to substantiate that which had always been intuitive for me. I realised that it is my “Heart’s Eye” that is responsible for my photos’ “success”. It is through my Heart’s Eye that I see, feel & communicate my vision of the world, so that you, my viewers, can be triggered to feel your own. It is through my Heart’s Eye that I communicate silently and, I hope, powerfully to those looking at my photos. It is through my Heart’s Eye that as I see, feel and capture the unseen, the missed or forgotten beauty all around me when I’m there in situ, so too can you be transported and transformed. On a recent trip to Australia to run my Intuitive Photography

workshop on How To Access The Camera Within, I stopped in New Zealand first. On a whim, I went trekking not with my heavy camera and lenses but my handphone alone. I was stunned! Photos taken with my handphone camera still spoke up, expressed themselves and elicited powerful emotions. My realization, and now mantra, is: “A photo taken with our heart is better than a technically perfect one taken with our head”. Yes, heart first, head second … It is taking pictures with our Heart’s Eye, not the type of camera we are using, that gives them “soul” for, as intelligent as the best cameras are, the one thing they CANNOT replicate is our emotions–our Heart’s Eye–that guide us flawlessly to the subject and the moment to start with. So, trust that. Use that. Whether using a DSLR or your handphone camera, I say the most important thing in taking a great photo is your Heart’s Eye… and the good news is we all have it. Enjoy using your “Heart’s Eye”!

Explore the untouched riches of Indonesia’s Pearl of the Pacific Hannah Grey

GETTING THERE Travellers can take a direct flight to Sultan Babullah Airport in Ternate, or take a domestic flight from Jakarta that takes about 5 hours. Lion Air, Garuda Indonesia, and Sriwijaya Air serve flights to Ternate regularly.

16

When people hear ‘Indonesia’, the first thing that probably comes to mind is the ‘island of the Gods’ – Bali. Either that or every Singaporean’s go-to weekend destination, Batam. But this secluded island in Indonesia is a place you’ve probably never heard of before. Morotai Island sits at the edge of the Pacific Ocean, which explains its rightful title as the ‘Pearl of the Pacific’. Located in eastern Indonesia’s Maluku Archipelago, this remote island is home to some of the most amazing sights nature has to offer. Could this be Indonesia’s best-kept secret? Most may know Morotai from its rich history and significance during World War II, being a strategic military base for the Japanese forces. However, there is more to the island than its historic past. Today, it is brimming with all sorts of remarkable sights that you’ll definitely want to see.

Morotai Island

Morotai Island sits at the edge of the Pacific Ocean, which explains its rightful title as the ‘Pearl of the Pacific’.

Morotai Islands

Bask in the Sun at Dodola Island u Just slightly off the coast of Morotai, Dodola Island is Morotai’s ‘hidden pearl’ and is one of the island’s most popular destinations. Directly facing the Pacific Ocean, the whitesand beach and panoramic scenery make for the perfect island getaway. Beaches are known to be crowded at times - but there is nothing of the sort here. Since it is still a relatively secluded and underrated location, the surroundings remain pristine and tranquil. Dodola Island happens to be divided into two parts – big Dodola and Small Dodola, otherwise known as Dodola Besar and Dodola Kecil. During low tide, the distance between both beaches can go up to 500 metres! While this tropical paradise is littered with pristine beaches, Dodola Island truly takes the cake. t Morotai’s Lavishing Waterfalls

The most popular activity on the Island is actually snorkelling and diving. Below the surface, Morotai boasts the underwater beauty that lies beneath it. You’ll find everything from colourful corals to abandoned shipwrecks from the over 20 diving spots on this tiny island! Besides submerging yourself in the deep blue, Morotai is also the perfect destination to ride the waves. Situated in Sopi Village is Morotai’s top surf spot - Tanjung Sopi. The waves here are equivalent to that of its fellow Indonesian islands like Bali and Mentawai, which is why Tanjung Sopi is a crowd favourite amongst professional surfers. Although the swells in Tanjung Sopi are more suited for pros, beginners don’t have to miss out on the fun - there are several surf instructors that will guide visitors through it and make sure they catch a wave!

Little do most know, Morotai is actually a mountainous island just as much as it is a coastal one. Waterfalls are never a sight to be missed on the island and visitors have plenty of options to choose from. For starters, the Raja Waterfall is a hidden gem in the rural village of Raja. On some days, you might be able to interact with the locals too. Located on the hillside of Bakulu Mountain in East Morotai, the soothing ambience of the Bunga Kokota Waterfall will definitely calm your senses. But if you’re feeling a little more adventurous, head over to the Wayabula Waterfall and stand from the top of the falls at 50 metres high! Regardless of whichever you choose, the sound of the cascading waters is bound to leave you relaxed for days.

The Magic of

Manali

Manali delivers one of the most beautiful high-altitude hikes to Bhrigu Lake. Cheryl Kho

Rising powdered alabaster slopes all around; the fresh luxuriance of Nature’s greens; and glassy surfaces of frigid water unmarred by errant ripples’. Enter the picturesque Indian resort town of Manali, an adventurer’s paradise situated in the high Himalayas within the Beas River Valley. This is the cornerstone of the Manali Trekking Circuit, from where the most scenic Himalayan treks originate and centre point from where the famed Rohtang Pass can be accessed. East of the 4,000 metre-high Rohtang Pass lies Bhrigu Lake, the rewarding destination at the end of this weekend hiking expedition from Manali. Steeped in legend, the eponymous lake, surrounded by sprawling grasslands and sloping alpine meadows,

20

follows the deep meditation of famous saint Maharishi Bhrigu. The locals also believe the many gods of Kullu Valley once soaked in the lake’s holy waters and performed religious rituals on its banks hundreds of years ago, making it a sacred dip for devotees. From Manali, it is an hour drive up along the winding Rohtang Pass with River Beas flowing serenely on the side, jostling with other vehicles to get to the much sought-after trail. This is where your journey begins into Gulaba Meadows, a

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO 1. Prepare Diamox, the prescribed medication to combat Acute Mountain Sickness by speeding up acclimatisation, as you’ll be gaining almost 4000 feet in a day. 2. You’ll need a guide, as the paths aren’t very well-marked or distinct. 3. Prepare for the hike with sufficient cardio; it’s going to be a pretty steep climb.

short 1.5-hour hike into where the base camp is at the foot of the trek. Gulaba Base Camp is a colourful cluster of pitched tents amid a verdant alpine meadow framed by craggy cliffs and dense forests. The most prominent amongst the tents is the yellow snack shack, where the local Indian porters keep a steady stock of necessary supplies for hikers and shepherds passing through. From June to September, the best period to embark on this journey, the sun’s unrelenting shine keeps the chill of the highlands at bay. Wild horses and grazing sheep pepper the lush hills of wildflowers along the water’s edge, behind which the snowcapped peaks of the Pir Panjal and Dhauladhar range carve up the skyline. The vast grasslands afford spectacular views of Manali’s major peaks - Ladakhi, Shitidhar and Hanuman Tibba. On a clear day, you see the mountains in the distance rise almost parallel to one another, punctuated by wisps of cloud being gently tousled along. These peaceful pastures are a far cry from Manali’s crowded, bustling city centre. It is a steep ascent from here on out, made especially strenuous with a tent in your backpack bound for the next campsite. Embarking on this difficult part of the trail, your limbs

will thank you for the cardio preparation you ought to have done beforehand. Fortunately, there is no need to carry too much water with you, to add to the weight of your backpack. The trickling streams along the way, flanked by towering virgin forests of cedar and silver oak, provide natural spring water that you can drink directly. An occasional rendezvous with the area’s vibrant wildlife keeps your spirits up, as you encounter the many charming species including the Himalayan Monal and Snow Cocks along the way. The Seven Sister peaks dominate the panoramic view. A few exhausting hours later that will leave your legs burning, you arrive at Rola Khuli Camp, a scene of multi-hued tents in a vast expanse of green, with a snaking dirt path running through. Spend a night within the comfort of the tent walls to shield from the biting winds. At dinner, the locals serve a pot of delicious, lovingly prepared khichdi, an Indian vegetarian stew made from rice and lentils. And around this very pot is where an unlikely aggregation of hikers from around the world converge, brought together by a common love for Nature’s most beautiful. The next day’s expedition will finally bring you to the hallowed Bhrigu Lake. Upon crossing a small rushing stream, the steepest portion of the trek awaits, as the rocky path tears away from the treeline in a daunting, almost-vertical fashion. As you ascend, the air begins to noticeably thin and grappling for breath is inevitable. The last leg of the climb is a maze of jagged rock, watery snow and slippery boulders, shrouded in thick fog. A windbreaker or a poncho is a necessity here, especially in braving the howling Himalayan winds. The final climb is almost sheer, arduous and littered with snow but the thought of witnessing the lake’s storied

divinity will keep you determined. And finally, at long last, you uncover Manali’s treasure. The oval, ethereal face of Bhrigu Lake gleams serenely between two high-altitude ridges. Whether in the thick of winter or the heat of summer, its depths never freezes over completely. Through the year, Bhrigu Lake transitions between several forms – rich deep blue, emerald green, glassy frozen surface, or dotted with ice floes. But whichever form you are blessed to have the opportunity to witness, it is Nature’s masterful work of art, evolving through the seasons. No one form of Bhrigu Lake is ever truly the same.

The Land of Ice and Fire is home to some of the most spectacular landscapes in the world. It exudes beauty at every corner, surrounded by natural wonders of all sorts. It’s the absolute perfect location for those who love the great outdoors. The Golden Circle is a popular route in Iceland and makes for the perfect day trip for those who are strapped for time. As tourists embark on this circuit, there are three main destinations that one will come across – Thingvellir National Park; The Geysir Geothermal Area; and the Gulfoss waterfall.

HOW TO CIRCUIT THE GOLDEN CIRCLE: Golden Circle tours are a crowd favourite amongst visitors in Iceland. But if you’re feeling adventurous, you can drive it yourself and go on an exciting road trip!

EXPLORING THE GOLDEN CIRCLE Journey with us as we tour Iceland’s Iconic Golden Circle Route

THINGVELLIR NATIONAL PARK: WHERE THE EARTH DRIFTS APART Located 40 kilometres from Reykjavik, the first stop on the journey is Thingvellir National Park. As the country’s first national park, this is one of Iceland’s most famous national treasures for various reasons. While the Park boasts an assortment of natural phenomena at every glance, Thingvellir is also rich in history. This national park is where the first Icelandic parliament met thousands of years ago. In fact, it was more of an open-air parliamentary assembly than an actual building. While it may not seem like it, tectonic activities are underway in the park. At Thingvellir, you will actually see the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates meet and get the opportunity to walk through two continents at the same time. Other sights that are not to be missed include Lake Thingvellir and Þingvallakirkja – one of Iceland’s first churches.

GEYSER HOT SPRING AREA As you continue driving through the Golden Circle route, you’ll arrive at the Geysir Geothermal Area in the Haukadalur Valley. In this area, you’ll cross paths with two of the most famous Geysers in Iceland - the Great Geysir and Strokkur Geysir. The Great Geysir, or just ‘Geysir’, is the first documented Geysir in all of Europe. Despite being active for almost 10,000 years, it has unfortunately been dormant since 1916. But once, in 1984, it was said that the Geysir sprouted hot water up to a height of 170 metres! In contrast to the sound inactivity of the Great Geysir, Strokkur is the complete opposite. The Geysir erupts every 10 minutes and boiling water shoots up to 40 metres into the air. As you journey on the Haukadalur Valley, you will come across more natural sights such as smaller geysers, bubbling mud pots, as well as several other hot springs.

GULFOSS WATERFALL Smack in the middle of the Golden Circle route, Gulfoss is considered to be the most extravagant waterfall in all of Iceland. ‘Gulfoss’ translates to ‘Golden Waterfall’ in Icelandic, which is a fitting title as the water turns into a golden-brown colour on a bright, sunny day! From river Hvítá, the Gulfoss waterfall plunges into a 32-metre crevice, giving onlookers the illusion that the falls are disappearing into the ground. As it plunges into a gorge, its unique formation begins to unfold - visitors never fail to marvel at the flowing body of water as it cascades down. Unlike most other waterfalls, the Gulfoss Waterfalls is said to be best viewed from above than below. But whichever view you stand from, there is no doubt that it will still take your breath away.

TRAVEL TIPS ›› Packing for a snow-capped adventure? Dealing with the frosty weather is a challenge even for a seasoned adventurer. Here are some tips to help you prepare for your wintry getaway! Kajol Nar Singh

LAYER UP Three basic layers should be secured. The base layer fulfils the primary purpose of removing moisture from the skin. Stay away from cotton and opt for wool or synthetic materials! The middle layer acts as an insulator against the cold and the outer shell will block you from moisture and winds. From there, add or remove layers as you deem fit during your adventure.

KEEP HYDRATING AND EATING When the cold settles in, you will tend to feel less hungry and thirsty. However, your body still needs fuel to keep going! Carry along small bags of dried fruits, nuts and energy bars to munch on. These do not freeze easily and are good sources of energy. Also, get yourself a thermal insulator for your water bottle to keep your water from turning into ice.

KEEP YOUR ELECTRONICS WARM The cold climate and harsh winds can result in batteries dying faster than usual. Prolong the battery life of your devices. Stash them in the pockets against your skin or in between layers, tucked in your backpack.

TEMPERATURE When the temperature hits subzero levels, layering up may not be enough. Cover as much of your exposed skin as possible. Body parts such as the toes, fingers, lips and cheeks are prone to frostbite in the hard weather. Take precautionary measures with the use of mittens, woollen socks and neck gaiters. You can also apply sticky heat packs onto your clothes to ensure that your skin remains warm.

STAY ALERT Travelling in a group can be fun but it is important to keep an eye out for the people around you! If they display some telltale signs of hypothermia like disorientation and paleness, stop them and get them more insulation.

JEJU

Home of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Seongsan Ilchulbong, Jeju island is packed with activities for all ages! Filled with natural wonders, Jeju-do is the place for nature lovers! Thanks to its incredible typography, Jeju-do has an array of great hiking spots! Situated in the heard of the island lies the Hallasan National Park. As the tallest mountain in Korea, Hallasan mountain is perfect for both beginners and experienced hikers alike. With about five trails you can choose from that are lower than 10km, the views you would get out of these treks are surreal. You could also hike up the Seongsan Ilchulbong, also known as Sunrise Peak, to get a closer look at the crater or just to get a good view of the sunrise! If you would rather stay at the base of the crater, do not fret - the view of it from below is just as beautiful. A trip to Jeju-do would not be complete without having a meal of fresh seafood! Fresh catch is best savoured raw, sashimi-style. It would also be a bonus if your seafood was caught by Haenyeo (mermaid), also known as female divers. These female divers catch live seafood with their bare hands!

FUN FACT South Korea has a lot of fishing related activities all year round because of its cultural significance. For centuries, locals turned to fishing with bare hands as a means to survive. But through the years, it has become a wonderful past-time.

Known as ‘King of the Fjords’, the 205 km-long fjord is home to myriad natural wonders: lush foliage, cascading waterfalls and majestic glaciers. The most rugged explorers can take on the week-long challenge of traversing the entire impressive length of Sognefjord with kayak and paddle. On the inner end of the fjord is Europe’s biggest glacier, Jostedalsbreen, around which many of the most adrenaline-inducing activities can be enjoyed. It goes without saying that this massive glacier should itself be explored and on foot, no less. Clip on some crampons, bundle up warmly and take a guided glacier hike across the crevasses of this magical blue landscape. Putting an icy twist on whitewater rafting, IceTrolls Norway offers glacier river rafting at 500-900 KR per adult - a chilly but exhilarating affair as you crash down rocky rapids. Alternatively, canyoning with Fjord Active will entice the thrill-seekers among you as their guides take you swimming, climbing and leaping off cliffs - rest assured, they provide the necessary wetsuits, helmets and life-jackets to keep your inner layers warm and (hopefully) as dry as possible.

Q&A with… Stone Tsang • Overall Champion Ultra Trail Mount Rosa (UTMR) • Hong Kong Four Trails Ultra Challenge finisher • Top 10 Ultra Trail World Tour x 2 (8th and 10th) We sat down with Stone Tsang, who is one of six people who have ever managed to finish the 298km Hong Kong Four Trails Ultra Challenge. Stone is an inspiration to runners who want to be adventurous and take part in ultra trail runs! Kajol Nar Singh

ON HOW HE STARTED I started very late at 25 years old. My first run was a marathon and I never ran more than five kilometres but I just went as a team with my colleagues. During that time? time, I spent 5 hours running the full marathon. Almost all my muscles were cramped. After that, I started training and began to like running.

ON TRAINING IN HONG KONG Our countryside that is huge with mountains and hills that are steep and technical. There are also forests which were unbelievably beautiful. The world-class scenery in Hong Kong is perfect for outdoor activities. While doing trail runs, I really find peace in the mountains.

ON WHAT KEEPS HIM GOING Ultrarunning is hard. One half is physical fitness and the other half is the mind. You have to have a strong mind to go for it and the mind will tell you how to feel when it gets difficult. Sometimes we might feel that it is tough but if you tell yourself to keep going, you will keep going. If you want to give up, you will definitely give up and not finish the race. I always tell myself that I have to get to the finish line, that I can do it.

WORDS OF WISDOM FOR NOVICE RUNNERS Your base is the most important for endurance running. You need to increase your mileage step-bystep. Also, if you want to finish the race you do not need to do a lot of high-intensity training. It is more of covering the distance. However, if you are looking at being competitive, some intensity would be important. Make it more fun as well! Change up your training circuit and involve your friends.

SPORTS TRAIL RUNNING

Get Started on

Trail Running Taking ‘run for the hills!’ literally Julia Lachica

Going for a run is one of the most accessible forms of exercise, but running the same concrete path could get stale and predictable. Trail running pairs running and nature together to offer a one of a kind experience.

GETTING STARTED Trail running is generally described as going on a run up and down the hills and passing by lush foliage and trees. However, trial running is more than that. Trail running brings runners deep into the forests, immersing them in serene nature. Similar to running, trail running requires a lot of stamina and focus. Starting

your journey uphill would demand a lot of energy from the runner, hence do not be afraid to start your run with a brisk walk, especially when you are going uphill. Since trail running would require you to be whizzing past different and uneven paths, focusing on where to land your next step is crucial in order to prevent any major injuries. Knowing your chosen trail beforehand could help in identifying the conditions of the paths and it would also help you get familiarised with the area.

ESSENTIALS A basic necessity for trail running would be the shoes.

Road running shoes are fine if you are still testing the waters, but if you do venture into the sport further, purchasing a pair of trail running shoes would be handy. As for attire, something light and breathable is perfect for trail running. Though the paths would be quite rugged, so as a precaution, wear clothing that you won’t be afraid to get dirty or snagged during the run. Do not forget to stay hydrated! Trail runs can get hot and, depending on the trail you choose, could be a long journey so make sure to have a bottle of water during your runs!

TIP Trail running is much more enjoyable with a partner or group! Not only will you be able to look out for each other, but you would get to experience nature as a collective.

SPORTS ICE CLIMBING Photo: Robert Baker

A growing sport amongst sports enthusiasts and adventurers, ice climbing is an activity not to be messed with. Similar to rock climbing, this chilling pursuit is paired with harsh cold winds and ice. Here are some tips on how you can get your icy expedition started!

JOIN A GROUP

GEAR UP Ice climbing may be similar to rock climbing, but ice climbing needs a few added gears and apparel for you to stay safe and warm during your climb up the top. Apart from the essential climbing equipment, ice climbing requires unique apparatus such as technical ice axes, leashes for the axes and ice screws. Do not forget to bundle up as well! Ice climbing requires the climbers to be in extremely cold weather for a long period of time and to be face to face with the ice wall, so be sure to wear heavy-duty winter apparel and layer up!

Climbing up a huge wall of ice can be daunting at first, but doing it with a group of people that are keen to learn the tricks of the trade can be less intimidating. Different countries have their own take on ice climbing. Dependent on the temperature and the difficulty level , tours and programmes for ice climbing differ on how they conduct their lessons. Be sure to constantly check beforehand whether the tour or programme you are eyeing for ice climbing is available. These tours can be sensitive to temperature and elevation as an added measure of safety.

A UNIQUE WORKOUT Just like rock climbing, ice climbing will test your physical and mental strength during your ascent. Climbing up the wall of ice would require the climber to have good core strength to pull themselves up and be very perceptive to determine every move they make during the climb.

SNOW BOATING A rather new and peculiar snow sport, snow boating is an activity that is typically done by kayakers during the wintertime. It may sound like a bizarre activity, but it is actually similar to a couple of winter sports you might be familiar with.

KAYAKING IN THE SNOW? It may sound like a sport you would only see on television, but snow boating or snow kayaking is gaining traction as a winter activity amongst sports enthusiasts and travellers. Snow boating usually uses playboats or creek-boats, depending on the style you are going for, and paddles are used to manoeuvre around as well. This interesting sport may just look like a person sliding down snow-dusted mountains, but it borrows aspects of sledding and skiing that is bound to get you out of your comfort zone. Snow boating has been recognised by extreme sports organisations, helping to create a platform for this new and niche sport. Such organisations have even created international competitions for snow boating, encouraging others to learn more about the sport.

42

Take a peek at this new sport Julia Lachica

WHERE TO START? Since snow boating is still a fairly new activity, there aren’t that many places that offer its services to the public. Be sure to call in beforehand to make sure whether they offer the required equipment and service for you to experience the one of a kind sport. Austria and Estonia are one of the few countries that offer this unique sport! Snow boating brings a different type of thrill that is fresh and new, so what are you waiting for? Grab a kayak and start your descent down the snow-white slopes of winter!

Plunge into the warm pool - tranquillity unaffected by the cacophony of crashing waves that envelop its rocky barricades. From the sandy bottom, small bubbles rise away from pockets of air and etch themselves onto the skins of those breathing in the salty ocean air, hoping to catch a glimpse of pod whales.

38 kilometres of sand sprawls over Moreton Bay - a paradise for beach lovers. The crystal clear water reflects the sunlight and gentle waves crash into the quiet shores that overlook the famous shipwreck. This is where divers and snorkelers whiz through the Tangalooma Wrecks in hopes of catching the innumerable species of fishes, corals and marine life hidden in coppercoloured sunken ships.
