Summary

12 Perestroika (Apuan Alps, Lucca, Tuscany) Gianni Guidotti In this article the author gives the explorative report and the morphological description of Abisso Perestroika, a 1130 m deep cave on Apuan Alps (Lucca, Tuscany). The cave is located on the “Alta Valle dell’Acqua Bianca” which karst system counts hundreds of cavities (with 5 more than 1000 m deep) for more of 50 km surveyed passages.

18 Depth Majella. Twenty years of explorations looking for the abyss (Abruzzo) Cesare Iacovone The Majella Mountain is one of the biggest karst massive in Abruzzo and Central Italy. In this paper the author wants to illustrate the relationship between man and the mountain with the story of more than twenty years of speleological explorations. In particular the Cave of the Terzo Portone, that seems to be far from a conclusion.

24 Cave of San Zeno de l’Oselet (Verona, Veneto) Andrea Ceradini, Andrea De Angelis In this article the authors describe a new exploration in San Zeno de l’Oselet cave, a temporary karst spring located 125 m above sea level, not far from the Garda Lake, Veneto. Beyond the third sump dived the exploration has stopped at the foot of climb. A dye tracing experiment confirms the connection between San Zen cave with the Spluga dei Cervi cave at 993 m altitude on Mount Baldo.

28 The Buca Nuova in Serenaia Valley (Apuan Alps, Lucca, Tuscany) Francesco De Grande The author describe the history of the explorations of Buca Nuova, the latest cave explored by cavers from Modena and Reggio Emilia, in Serenaia Valley in the Northeast side of Apuan Alps (Tuscany). The cave, located at 1315 m above sea level, has 1800 m of passages and is 700 m deep, its most striking morphological features are the wide shafts and the beautiful meanders. Many parts of the cave are still unexplored; probably its subterranean waters flow several kilometers to the North towards of the Equi Terme spring located at 270 m above sea level.

35 The old engravings of Santa Rosalia cave in Sicily Massimo Mancini, Paolo Forti A thorough bibliographical study and archive research seems to confirm that the oldest cave published survey dates back to 1651 and is related to the cave of Santa Rosalia in Mount Pellegrino near Palermo (Sicily). The engravings of the cave are part of the book: “Vita S. Rosalia virginis panormitanae e tabulis et parietinis […]” written by the jesuit Giordano Cascini, biographer of Santa Rosalia. The book is kept at Bologna in the “Franco Anelli” Library of the Italian Speleological Society.

38 A new cave in gypsum near Crotone (Calabria) Francesco Lamanna, Carmine Lepera, Caterina Dima, Franco Mascaro A new cave discovered in the gypsum karst area of Verzino (Crotone, Calabria) is described. This ongoing study deals with speleogenesis, speleothems and the cave fauna. The cave, 273 meters long and 22 meters deep, has been dedicated to the memory of the caver Juliano Flagelli who died at young age.

42 International Journal of Speleology in the élite of the worldwide scientific reviews Jo De Waele This article presents the history and the publishing management of the International Journal of Speleology, official journal of the International Union of Speleology published by the Società Speleologica Italiana. Now, thanks to the work of a new editorial staff, the Journal has entered in the index of the Thompson Institute of Scientific Information (ISI), which this is the first step for getting the Impact Factor (IF).

44 Notes on the sustainability of adaptation of show caves Giovanni Badino, Mauro Chiesi The article resumes some general considerations concerning the importance of carrying out a careful research before trasforming a wild cave into a show cave. It must be take suitable shrewdness such as monitoring cave climate, assessing impact on the resident public, deciding the type touristic cave management and turistic facilities, foreseeing the actions to undertake in the hypothesis of a break up, training of cave guides, ecc… Nevertheless the collaboration between the cavers, local authorities and managers of the show cave are very important.

48 Caves in salt of Cile Paolo Forti, Jo De Waele Atacama is one of the driest places on Earth, though caves have been explored in a salt ridge close to San Pedro de Atacama since over ten years. A recent scientific expedition has investigated the most important of these caves, some of which several hundreths of meter long, discovering curious speleothems, interesting morphologies, cave sediments, and also, in hidden corners, archaeological findings that shed a light on the past environment and climate.

56 The potential residual explorative of the Latium region Guido Baroncini Turricchia Through a geostatistic analysis that takes into account the road network, the caves register, the lithological situation and a Digital Elevation Model (DEM) the author has realised a hypothetical map of the caves not yet detected in the Latium region. On the basis of these considerations the unexplored caves might be 1400.
