Chihuly glass art at Union Station

ONLY HERE It’s no surprise that Tacoma, the hometown of renowned glass artist Dale Chihuly, is awash with sculpted silica forms and blown-glass beauties. At the Museum of Glass, the stainless steel hot-shop cone is a masterpiece in itself, but inside, attendees can watch resident artists pull molten glass from 2,400-degree furnaces to create works of art before their eyes. Outside, stroll across the 500-foot-long Chihuly Bridge of Glass to see 2,364 Chihuly masterpieces adorning the ceiling and a 109-sculpture display with some of the world’s largest blown-glass works. Between sessions, attendees can explore on their own with a cellphone walking tour from Tacoma Art Museum (dial 888-411-4220) that takes them to see Union Station’s blossom-like Persians, the University of Washington

Tacoma Library’s red chandelier, and The Swiss Restaurant + Pub’s brightly colored glass sculptures. Want to offer a hands-on option? Area 253 Glassblowing and Tacoma Glassblowing Studio host team-building workshops, where board members can learn how to fuse, blow, and tease glass into a keepsake work of art. moUNt raiNier Five developed areas grant access to Mt. Rainier National Park and its namesake 14,410-foot-tall volcanic peak. Closest to Tacoma is the Carbon River and Mowich Lake entrance—home to a temperate, rainforest-like woodland and the largest and deepest lake in the park. Sunrise, on the north side, is the highest point accessible by car, while Ohanapecosh, in the southeast corner, is renowned for its old-growth forests. Paradise, on the south side, is the main visitor area and, when not in full wildflower bloom, serves as the best spot for winter recreation. Nearby, Longmire offers waterfall views from both the roadside and hiking trails.

Here are just a few high-altitude adventures suitable for any attitude. Tour On: Private group tours offer everything from nature watching to snowshoeing and can be booked by the day or longer through local companies EverGreen Escapes or Discover Nature for a prime way to build team camaraderie. Bag a Peak: For convention-goers who can’t fit hiking boots into their carry-ons, there’s the Mt. Rainier Gondola at Crystal Mountain Resort. River to see the famous 168-foot Narada Falls, Falls or head out to Ohanapecosh for a walking tour among trees up to 300 feet tall and 1,000 years old in the Grove of the Patriarchs. Jazz Gala at LeMay— America’s Car Museum

ONLY HERE Guests can get their motors running in Pierce County, where classic cars rule the road. It’s hard to miss the gleaming curves of downtown Tacoma’s LeMay—America’s Car Museum near Interstate 5. This new kid on the block opened in 2012 and is quickly becoming the go-to place for car buffs. Motorheads can delve into all things auto with rotating exhibits, or just spend their time gawking at the 350 vehicles—from a vintage Cadillac to a sporty DeLorean—parked within the 165,000-square-foot showroom. About 20 minutes south, LeMay Family Collection Foundation at Marymount Event Center houses more than 500 vintage vehicles throughout three massive buildings. Here

the specimens are just as drool-worthy as the ones at LeMay’s downtown counterpart. Your attendees can admire dragsters, classic cars, fire engines, and even a custom motorcycle fashioned into a cherry-red stiletto. Added bonus: LeMay hosts meetings and receptions for auto-themed galas or parties. Direct your guests to Fife, where locals show off custom rides during Walt’s Family Car Show.. In nearby Sumner, hot rods, trucks, and classic cars take over downtown’s Main Street during the Classy Chassis Car Show, while Lakewood, 12 miles away, boasts music, food, and another engine-revving car show during SummerFest.

regional cuisine Some 40-plus restaurants are a short walk from Tacoma’s convention center; nearly 30 more are conveniently accessible via Link Light Rail so guests can maximize their time in town. One block from the convention center, Bite Restaurant takes on seasonal local ingredients with a regularly evolving menu. Here, Thursday farmers market cherries may tumble over scallops, Beecher’s cheese curds may mingle with fries and gravy, and wild salmon regularly meets its match with strawberryand-Sumner-rhubarb vinaigrette. Northwest oysters make a splash all day at nearby Pacific Grill and are easily followed by local Manila clam linguini or grilled king salmon and vegetable hash.

For sake samplers, endless lunchtime sushi rolls, and a dinner menu that gambols between true Japanese—think sashimi plates and sukiyaki—and Japanese fusion—à la rosemary tuna and salmon carpaccio—there’s TWOKOI, just a block south of the center. Zip to the Theater District station, two stops north of the convention center by Link, where old-world Mexico meets Texas in a brick building laced with ironwork and happy hour doesn’t get much better than $5 habañero prawns served with everything from mezcal to extra anejo tequila at Matador. For a cornucopia of steaks, brews, and art, take the Link two minutes south. Here, theater-like presentation from tuxedo-clad servers, an open grill, and 28-day dry-aged

Niman Ranch beef coalesce at the Northwest’s own El Guacho. For more laid-back fare, Harmon Brewery + Eatery pairs burgers and sandwiches with house-made blondes and IPAs, as well as seasonal suds such as the Fall Classic Imperial Redd or the Steep & Deep Winter Ale. Meanwhile, perched between the Museum of Glass and bobbing sailboats is The Social Bar and Grill, where guests can find local Henderson Inlet Sweet Bay fried oysters, grilled salmon wings—aka smoked wild salmon collars—and locally raised Draper Valley chicken.

Destiny Harbor Tours

Leave the planning up to someone else. When your attendees want to see the sights, tour operators take care of all the details.

Half Day Attendees can paddle with a local during a guided Gig Harbor Rent-A-Boat kayak tour. Options include a two-hour trip that takes them underneath the Tacoma Narrows Bridge to seek out wildlife and a two-hour sunrise paddle, complete with a breakfast of pastries and coffee on the beach. After the convention, guests can hop aboard a Destiny Harbor Tours boat to depart from Tacoma in an open-top vessel. Captains Tom Drohan and Glenn Swayze steer visitors through Puget Sound to glorious views of the waterfront and Mount Rainier. Keep an eye out for harbor seals, otters, and even soaring bald eagles. For those who prefer the city life, I Heart Tacoma Tours leads walking trips through downtown to explore Tacoma’s Wild West past. Or grab a brew (of both the hop and coffee bean variety) on the “Pub n Grub Crawl.”

Full Day To get the quintessential Northwest experience, catch a ride with Discover Nature, which picks up guests at Tacoma-area hotels before whisking them away to Mt. Rainier National Park for hikes through old-growth forests and meadows abloom with wildflowers or snowshoe walks in winter. Go to mountaineering day school with RMI Expeditions, or charter a private tour tailored specifically for your group’s interests with EverGreen Escapes or Tours Northwest. Taste wine, go rock climbing, or plan a customized outing to give your attendees the local experience.

Go for an artfilled afternoon at a museum. Docents regularly lead public tours at Tacoma Art Museum (1701 Pacific Ave) and LeMay—America’s Car Museum (2702 E D St) for a double dose of Pacific Northwest culture. The Washington State History Museum (1911 Pacific Ave) lets attendees and their families explore the region’s rich legacy at their own pace. Meanwhile, board members and VIPs can enjoy a live glassblowing demonstration and a personalized tour of glass-filled galleries at the Museum of Glass (1801 Dock St) during a private group visit.

Nothing says team building like a night on the town. Help attendees let loose before or after your event.

QUicK trip Rival craft cocktail lounges in Tacoma’s Hilltop district make barhopping as easy as a two-block stroll. Direct guests to recently renovated 1022 South J, open an hour past midnight on Friday and Saturday, for drinks fortified with absinthe or chrysanthemum bitters. Around the corner, former 1022 talent Chris Keil infuses his new venture, Hilltop Kitchen, with street food and spirits from Latin America (think shared plates, tequila, rum, and mezcal). A mile north, Parkway Tavern brings back the good old neighborhood bar with tap handles hanging from the ceiling and an ever-rotating lineup of brews and vino. Bonus: shuffleboard, pool, and arcade games fill the back for team bonding.

Complete the round at downtown’s Dorky’s Bar Arcade, which serves more than 100 beers and ciders as well as classic late-night fare. It’s 21 and older after 9pm, and convention-goers can aim for a high score on more than 100 classic arcade and pinball machines until 2am. aLL NiGht Do your guests prefer a show? Broadway Center for the Performing Arts—home to the Pantages, Rialto, and Theatre on the Square venues—offers everything from musicals to Shakespeare to modern dance. Hear all genres of music from a roster of regional talent at Jazzbones, or just hop on the Link Light Rail to New Frontier Lounge, where a regular schedule of open jam sessions and bingo nights is dotted with performances by touring indie acts. For a headliner, snag a seat at the Tacoma Dome or Emerald Queen Hotel and Casinos, where stages attract stars like Taylor Swift, Bon Jovi, and MC Hammer.

Tight schedule? Save time at hot spots close to the convention center: Hotel Murano’s Lobby Bar (1320 Broadway), just down the street, is a swanky place to grab a cocktail amid glass art. Only two Link Light Rail stops away, The Mix (635 St. Helens Ave) lives up to its name with a diverse, LGBT-friendly crowd. Almost-nightly karaoke is nearly as good as the cheap drinks and welcoming vibe. And at The Loch’s (928 Pacific Ave), also conveniently close by Link, the kitchen slings burgers, wings, and latenight grub until the DJ stops spinning at 2am.

Getting around downtown Tacoma is free and easy with the Tacoma Link Light Rail. The Link Light Rail provides complimentary service from one end of downtown to the other. Hop on to ride between the six stops: the Tacoma Dome, South 25th Street, Union Station, the Convention Center, South 11th Street, and the Theater District. The Link Light Rail operates 365 days a year. Parking is free in the six-story Link garage located next to the Tacoma Dome Station. The Link travels from one end to the other approximately every 12–24 minutes. Check soundtransit.org/schedules/ tacoma-light-link-rail for train frequency.

Sea-Tac International Airport

FLIGHT PLANS Tacoma is only 20 miles away from SeaTac International Airport, the major airport in the state. With around 800 flights arriving daily, Sea-Tac served more than 33 million passengers in 2012. Twenty-three different airlines provide nonstop flights to 75 domestic and 20 international destinations. Getting to and from the airport is easy with shuttles, limos, taxis, motor coaches, and public transportation.
