ONLY HERE GLASS ART As the hometown of renowned glass artist Dale Chihuly, Tacoma is a mecca for the craft. In downtown alone, a blazing fireball of a chandelier looms large in the University of Washington Tacoma Library, monarch-orange discs cartwheel across a half-moon window in Union Station, and fantastical vases in a rainbow of hues preen for onlookers aboard the Chihuly Bridge of Glass. Visitors are free to explore the city’s rich glass legacy on their own with Tacoma Art Museum’s Chihuly “Ear for Art” cellphone tour (dial 888-411-4220). Or they can just browse the exquisite specimens within the museum’s permanent Chihuly exhibit. The most iconic way to get glassy, though, is at the venerable

University of Washington Tacoma Library

Museum of Glass, a local institution devoted to the craft since 2002. Inside the stainless steel–clad hot-shop cone, a masterpiece in itself, resident artists pull gobs of molten silica from furnaces before blowing and sculpting them into works of art. Access to the hot-shop action is free with museum admission. Once visitors have had their fill, they can wander MOG’s galleries to admire glass art from all over the world. Prefer something a little more hands on? Area 253 Glassblowing and Tacoma Glassblowing Studio put an interactive twist on the craft, with workshops that let anyone fuse, blow, and flamework glass into a special keepsake. Book one to give VIPs a warm welcome, or use it as a small-group team-building opportunity.

Mount Rainier

ONLY HERE Five developed areas grant access to Mt. Rainier National Park and its namesake volcano, which at 14,410 feet is the tallest glaciated peak in the Lower 48. Closest to Tacoma is the Longmire visitor area (Nisqually entrance), which offers waterfall views from both the roadside and hiking trails. Mowich Lake (Carbon River entrance) is home to a rain-forest-like woodland and the largest, deepest lake in the park. Sunrise (White River entrance) is the highest point accessible by car, while the Ohanapecosh (Stevens Canyon entrance) is renowned for its old-growth forests. Paradise (Nisqually entrance) is the main visitor area, with a variety of trails looping through

wildflower-studded alpine meadows and ranger-led snowshoe tours in winter. One of the easiest ways to experience the wonders of Mount Rainier is on a hike. Take the Paradise River Trail to see the famous 168-foot-tall Narada Falls, or embark on a beginner-friendly hike like the Nisqually Vista Loop, which is only 1.2 miles long and suitable for families. Other notable options include the Grove of the Patriarchs, where 1,000-year-old trees can be up to 300 feet tall, and the Wonderland Trail, a 93-mile loop that circumnavigates the mountain. In summer, visitors can park in Longmire, catch a shuttle to Paradise, and hike the 1.1 miles back to their cars.

For an all-in-one alpine adventure, local companies such as EverGreen Escapes offer all-day excursions that include everything from transportation to naturalist-led hikes and snowshoe walks. Tours are available for small groups and for private events. Other ways to admire Rainier? Hop on the Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad + Museum, a steam-powered locomotive that winds its way through the foothills. Or just clamber aboard the Mt. Rainier Gondola, which breezily ferries passengers to the top of Crystal Mountain. Dine at the appropriately named Summit House restaurant before admiring the sight of glacier-clad Mount Rainier from the viewing platform.

LeMay— America’s Car Museum

COURTESY LEMAY—AMERICA’S CAR MUSEUM

COLLECTOR VEHICLES Cruise into Pierce County, and it soon becomes obvious: This is car county. Locals flex their car savvy over custom rides, cool chrome creations fill museums, and annual events rev things up. It’s hard to miss the sweeping silver curves of LeMay—America’s Car Museum in downtown Tacoma, just off Interstate 5. More than 300 cars, trucks, and motorcycles hold court inside the sleek 165,000-square-foot showroom, where guests can get their motors running with everything from sporty NASCAR racers to cutting-edge solar-powered cars to cool Mustangs. Visitors can even take a heart-

pumping turn behind the wheel in one of the racing simulators. Another 500 vehicles are parked for public viewing at LeMay Family Collection at Marymount Event Center, about 20 minutes south of downtown Tacoma. Three massive buildings house everything from classic cars and antiques to custom motorbikes, fire engines, and novelty vehicles. An added bonus for meeting planners? Both LeMay facilities are available to rent out for an elegant gala or event amid the autos.

If that’s still not enough for car buffs, a slate of shows can add to the collector-vehicle craze. Gig Harbor’s Cruise the Narrows event showcases hundreds of vintage vehicles. Sumner’s Classy Chassis Car Show features hot rods, trucks, and classic cars taking over downtown streets. And at the Fife Family Affair Car Show, locals flaunt their rides for an all-ages auto celebration.

Promoting Pierce County’s bevy of pre and post options can help boost meeting attendance and give your guests the chance to embark on some fearless exploration:

HIT THE WATER

With bays, harbors, and lakes galore, Pierce County holds plenty of prime aquatic adventure. Local businesses like Gig Harbor Rent-A-Boat and Foss Harbor Marina rent kayaks and stand-up paddleboards for those looking to get their feet wet (figuratively, of course), while Destiny Harbor Tours gives guests the opportunity to spot wildlife and cruise the smooth surface of Puget Sound. Want an option on

dry land? Direct visitors to the three-mile waterfront stretch of Ruston Way, which runs along Commencement Bay. It’s a prime spot to breathe in the salt water– tinged air and glimpse fishermen waiting for a catch.

HUNT FOR HISTORY

Attendees can travel back a couple of centuries at Fort Nisqually Living History Museum, a working replica of the Puget Sound’s first non-Native settlement, complete with blacksmithing and fur trading demonstrations. More history awaits at Puyallup’s Meeker Mansion, the 125-yearold home of Oregon Trail pioneer Ezra Meeker, as well as local museums: the all-encompassing

lenge, with great views of Mount Rainier and the Olympic Mountains. Tacoma’s Meadow Park Golf Course, which turns 100 in 2015, has something for beginners with a more manageable executive nine and an 18-holer. And Spanaway’s Lake Spanaway Golf Course features Douglas fir–lined fairways and large greens. Another don’t-miss: Classic Golf Club in Spanaway, where owner and PGA Tour player Ryan Moore can often be spotted out on the range.

SKI THE SLOPES

Winter brings blankets of snow, perfect for carving down the mountain or catching a powder stash. Snow bunnies should blaze a path to Crystal Mountain Resort, where 2,600 powdery acres await with steeps, bowls, and even a terrain park. Meanwhile, Mt. Rainier National Park has plenty for Nordic skiers, including groomed tracks and the largest no-fee hut-to-hut trail system on the continent. And if your

guests desire a gentler introduction to the snowy stuff, they can grab a saucer and zoom down the sledding hill at the park’s Paradise visitor area.

SEE A SHOW

Tacoma’s Broadway Center for the Performing Arts is home to three of the county’s most storied theater venues—Pantages Theater, Rialto Theater, and Theatre on the Square—where everything from musicals to modern dance to Shakespeare has

taken the stage. If it’s star power you seek, whisk guests to Emerald Queen Hotel + Casinos or the Tacoma Dome, both known for hosting big-name acts in their ever-changing lineups. Searching for something a bit more low-key? Tacoma Comedy Club talent doles out stand-up acts and zinging one-liners to smiling crowds, and Jazzbones dials up the cool quotient with smooth tunes.

Dining out in Pierce County can mean any number of things: cracking into a freshly caught Dungeness crab, washing down briny oysters with a craft beer, digging into a wedge of tangy-yet-sweet rhubarb pie, biting into a juicy burger, savoring comfort food at a greasy spoon, slicing into a perfect cut of steak, sipping a houseinfused cocktail ... well, you get the idea. The options are endless and most definitely delicious. And the best part? Visitors can take advantage of all the region’s tasty variety before, during, or after your event. More than 40 restaurants, bars, and cafes are within walking distance of the Greater Tacoma Convention & Trade Center,

with diverse price points and global flavors, from Argentine to Vietnamese. About two dozen additional establishments are also easily accessible from the convention center by Link Light Rail, letting guests maximize their time in town. Encourage attendees to eat like a local by sampling the regional fare. Freshly caught seafood is a must in the Pacific Northwest, with salmon, sushi, oysters, crab, and more rotating across menus by season. Another regional specialty to highlight is rhubarb. Pierce County is the leading producer of rhubarb in the United States,

accounting for about half of the nation’s supply. In fact, Sumner is the selfproclaimed Rhubarb Pie Capital of the World, with bakeries and cafes putting their own twist on the sweet treat. Last but not least, invite guests to go bottoms up in the local sips scene. Pierce County is studded with craft breweries, distilleries, and wineries, all serving up their unique brand of suds, spirits, and vino.
