February is the month of love in most United States households, with Valentine's Day, a major consumer holiday and time of love, just before spring. Slanted explores the topic of love in this special issue. Love is beauty. Love is pain. Both produce great art.

I n 2007 independent artist, producer and rapper, Steven Boyd or Young Pooh, began working on a business model for what was always his passion and first love – music. So Young Pooh started his franchise, Grind 1 st. Young Pooh originally hails from the M emphis, TN area, a location that I ’m fairly familiar with. H is style is no doubt influenced by these percussive Southern sounds, moods and themes from the streets of the southside. Young Pooh is a lifelong 3 6 M afia fan, and I can clearly remember the good old days when he just banged his beats out on a Zoom Digital drum

machine. N owadays, Young Pooh works in local recording studios, like Two Fish and others. H e puts out his own

H e still plans to make it happen, and plans to bring more mainstream artists to the area. Young Pooh has worked

Redd’s Apple Ale

I’d have to say, I was suspicious of this stuff at first glance, when my girlfriend, Jamie, first introduced it to me last month. But my suspicion turned to surprise once the lightly frothed substance seeped into the orifices of my taste buds. I shit you not; this beer was so absolutely delicious that I would recommend it as a regular beverage over apple juice or even apple cider (be responsible folks). I’d say it is just a better tasting substance. The apple is sweet, yet not so bitter in this light ale, brewed in Albany, Georgia. This particular six pack came from Walgreens, but I was pleased to see that

the Pub 500 in Mankato had secrets they might have a healthy supply on hand as locked in their hoppers? The IPA was certainly a unique well. Mankato Brewery – New addition to the brand and a great beer for craft Samples I had the pleasure of tasting enthusiasts no doubt. was Stickum. some samples of Mankato Second Brewery’s beers that I had Stickum is a little heavier. It’s not had the pleasure of no Guiness, but it’s on the tasting prior. Jay hooked it order of a dark, German inspired brew. It’s malted up. First up was Mankato twice. Urban legend has it Brewery’s IPA: Center Street that the recipe comes from a #2. Jay poured me a sample mistake the brewer made in and I took it down without the malting process. any pre-existing thoughts, but Last up was Organ Grinder. I was struck with great Definitely a thumbs up on pleasure, first, then surprise. I this one. This beer started as really think the local boys at Mankato’s Center Street #1 . Mankato Brewery have It evolved into organ grinder stepped up their game, or because of its truly maybe they’re just beginning! melancholy flavor and Who knows what other frothy aftertaste. It’s a great beer to

get when you’re in the mood for blues, cheese and sports. It’s a Minnesota beer.

Third Street Brewhouse – Cream Ale – Rise to the Top

This was another impressive brew that I had read about in Growler recently and I had the pleasure of trying it recently. It is like a cream soda, but still has the distinct flavor of hops, unlike the Redd’s Apple Ale. Rise to the Top did just that. They were present at the Craft Beer Expo at the Verizon Wireless Center in January. Third Street has the cool factor going for them, sure, but they also have excellent products that stand out such as this smooth cream ale concoction.

Branded The P E R F E C T C O U P L E

9

By Megan Elizabeth Nutting

Lover man and I were sitting in our living room enjoying the company of our roommate when we were branded. I could feel the steam rising off the fresh pink skin where my roommate had pressed words that I had been dreading: “the perfect couple”. I realize being called the perfect couple is not inherently offensive. However, the pressure of being perfect or striving for as close to perfect as humanly possible has served as food for obsessive behavior for eons. Multiply that pressure by two people and you have a formula for disaster. After our roommate dubbed my lover man and me “the perfect couple” it was a fairly smooth downward spiral to the bottom. Weeks later I threatened to leave for good and lover man was not sure that he wanted to stop me. Relationships often remind me of pottery. A potter can spend countless hours creating what she hopes will be the most beautiful teapot. The image will be clear in her mind--a delicate piece with fluted edges. She will pick the best porcelain despite the fact it is out of her budget. After she has removed her masterpiece from the kiln she finds cracks, warps in the foundation, perhaps that the lid shrank more rapidly than the pot itself. When we spend so much time absorbed in the end result we often lose sight of the important details. Had our hypothetical potter paid closer attention, she would have known to add more water to her piece to prevent it from cracking or she may have given her teapot a stronger base even if meant sacrificing the delicate aesthetic. For weeks prior to our epic blow out, I had been absorbed in the final picture. Perfection was a smiling photograph of us in matching sweaters to send in a holiday card or debuting at a party with big smiles and all of the public displays of affection we could manage. Attempting to write what the perfect couple looked like to me after the fact makes me feel as though I was a fourth grade girl playing mash with the other girls in the back of the bus. You will marry a (insert profession) named (insert name) and live in a (insert style of home). I became obsessed with the overall picture that I cared little for the details. Lover man, as great as he is, does not like cameras, or parties, or people for that matter. Many of the activities that I found necessary for perfect couples like we were supposed to be were ones that he dreaded. I became so caught up in what we needed to appear to be that I did not hold our relationship to the realities of our situation. Astrologically speaking, lover man and I should not be a couple. A palm reader may urge that I find a more suitable mate—maybe a Gemini. To say the least we are very different people. Yet it takes both yin and yang to create harmony. What I wanted seemed to be a yang-yang scenario. When we finally hit our breaking point and the shouting match was over I was able to see the signs that I should have caught earlier and came to conclusions that now seem very simple. There is never any such thing as a perfect couple. It is a fantasy that is fed by Hollywood articles and poorly scripted sagas about having some glitter-man’s bastard child. That does not mean that lover man and I should not be together, but rather that we should simply be just the way we are. If you are looking for advice on love this season realize that love is less the portrait we paint in our minds and more the amount of time and effort it takes to do the painting.
