Bridgewater Uses Madden Video Game to Study Plays, the Rookie Quarterback Says

Rookie quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, according to sources, uses the Madden video game to learn the Minnesota Vikings’ playbook, in addition to putting in quality time on the actual field (opposed to the pixel-by-pixel one). The actual training camp for the Minnesota Vikings takes place at Minnesota State University, Mankato and its opening is nearing closer. Vendors and fans will soon envelope the MSU campus to watch the team and support them with “purple pride.” Coincidentally, the MSU colors are nearly the same as the Vikings. Bridgewater is expected to be a rising star on the team this year and reports indicate that the Madden game is used as part of his training on plays. Bridgewater has reportedly imported the team’s entire playbook into the video game. Bridgewater said that the game reinforces his knowledge of the plays on the actual field by adding just one more layer of practice. He said it will be beneficial because it gives a player one more added step of gameplay practice. This isn’t necessarily a new strategy for Bridgewater though. When he played for the Cardinals, he used the same trick to master plays on the field. He would play NCAA opponents over and over again after entering playbook information into the game. He said that he also draws plays and tries to visualize them in his head to have a more full understanding of them. Games are becoming more intricate, realistic and useful to athletes in a variety of sports. Will this or has this become a trend for athletes? Bridgewater claims that MLB pitcher superstar Johan Santana uses video games to learn his opponents as well. Bridgewater will join the team on the training camp field at MSU in July. - See more at: http://www.slantedmag.com/?q=tech/minnesota-vikings-qb-uses-madden-video-game-to-train0614#sthash.bvIM4eNa.dpuf

Indie Film Indie Film at Owatonna Public Library: Stories We Tell Stories We Tell is an award-winning genre-twisting film by Canadian actress/director Sarah Polley who investigates the elusive truths of her family of storytellers. She playfully interrogates them as they each relate their version of the family mythology. Mixing interviews with family members and friends along with home movies and Super-8 footage shot to look like actual events, Polley’s aim is to tell the story of her late mother and try to uncover some of her secrets. Her mother, who was also an actress, died when Polley was eleven and what starts as a search for her own identity and to connect with her mother becomes so much more. It is an exploration of how the things that happen to us become the stories we tell to others and that few experiences are really facts, but are instead interpretations of those facts or events. While no one differs enormously on the details of her mother’s life or other family events...the feelings about those details, the impressions do differ, in ways subtle or big. For example, when various people are asked “did you think my mother was afraid of dying?” the answers vary. The story becomes either how bravely she faced it, or how she was in denial, or something entirely different. Yet these impressions become facts to the person telling the story, and thus the listener is also influenced. The film is also a fascinating detective story. What’s truly amazing is how engrossing this seemingly mundane family story becomes in the telling. We all have common bonds and empathy flows easily when we get to know each other’s stories. Runing time: 108 min. The Independent and World Films Series runs on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month, with showings at 2:00 p.m. and again at 7:00 p.m. in the 3rd Floor Gainey Room. The focus for our series is foreign or world films, as well as independent films that are not widely distributed in the U.S. All programs at OPL are free of charge. 22 Jump Street Review

“Do the same thing. Everyone’s happy.” From the very opening, “22 Jump Street” announces that fact that it’s a sequel. Hell, it can’t stop reminding us of the fact and how it intentionally sets out to repeat the outline of the first film. There are so many worse films to repeat almost verbatim than “21 Jump Street” but if you’re going to take the beat-for-beat approach, cynicism can only get you so far. After making a mess of things during an undercover drug bust, Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Jenko (Channing Tatum) are told in very 4th wall-breaking terms that they’ll be headed back to Jump Street to do what they do best, this time at college. And once again, the bromantic couple start drifting apart in their investigation, this time thanks to Jenko bonding with the football team and frat house. Will the duo ever get back together or will they go their separate, ah fuck it. You know how this goes. After all, you’ve seen it already once before. Phil Lord and Chris Miller are on a roll lately after the runaway success of “The LEGO Movie” and “22 Jump Street” is hardly a mark against that. Like it’s predecessor, the film knows that it’s got magic in the form of Hill and Tatum’s chemistry, as well as Lord and Miller’s irreverent humor. But watching the film you can’t help but wonder if the movie is too cynical about its existence for its own good. There are some funny, funny moments in “22 Jump Street”. Ice Cube’s epic food freakout, our protagonist’s even trippier, well, trip, a cameo or two from the first film and Tatum kind of admitting “White House Down” was a bad idea -- take your pick. But there’s also a huge dry spell in the middle of the film where Lord and Miller seem content to simply revisit the conflict of the first movie without adding anything all that comedic. Sure, there are a few chortles but on the whole, everything grinds to a halt. In the absence of truly funny stuff happening during this stretch, Lord and Miller fall back on the idea of more sequel related stuff and it wears thin fast. The film feels almost every minute of it’s near two-hour runtime and while it does eventually pick back up, there’s no shaking the feeling that they shouldn’t have to dwell so long on obligatory drama that they got down pat in the first movie. The action sequences do their job and feature a few really good gags, while the addition of Peter Stormare and Jillian Bell are wholly welcome. Even at their most under-utilized, Hill and Tatum can still light up the screen with their presence and the directing duo know how to pull some truly hilarious, unexpected material out of thin air A little bit of self-awareness is always appreciated but not as much when you rest the entire movie upon it. The parts are all there to make it work again but the movie gets too caught up in its own defeated purpose to get the most out it. Just because you’re a sequel doesn’t mean you have to try less. It’s what can make the difference between complete hilarity -- the first movie -- and above-average amusement -- this one. - See more at: http://www.slantedmag.com/?q=film/twenty-two-jump-street-0614#sthash.7IH9pkI4.dpuf

INDIE THEATRE Mankato Mosaic Folks Looking for Two Actors for Upcoming Play, Theatre Group will Perform again at Twin Cities MN Fringe Festival Like Slanted Mag on Facebook! facebook.com/slantedmag

Mankato Mosaic is currently looking for a couple of actors for an upcoming play by Greg Abbot. They are looking for one male and one female actor, according to a post from Elaine Hardwick on Facebook. “Hello all! I am looking for one male and one female actor for a short, 10-minute comedy play in August 2014,” said Hardwick. “If you, or anyone you know might be interested, please have him/her FB message me. No experience necessary. Thanks and enjoy!” The post had several responses from people in the community, many of them interested in what the play is about. Hardwick explained the scenario. “It’s a play by Greg Abbott,” said Hardwick. “Boyfriend and girlfriend are camping and the guy is whiny about camping and the woman is a ‘tom-boy’ and gives him a hard time.” Abbot and Hardwick, along with the many stagehands and actors that make Mankato Mosaic possible, have been known to put together some real comedic performances, such as Gravitone and Puppet Problems, both of which were held at the Mankato Event Center and various locations. Many performances have been put on at the What’s Up Lounge, Arts Center of Saint Peter and other local hotspots. Their plays have also been in the Minnesota Fringe Festival in the Twin Cities. - See more at: http://www.slantedmag.com/?q=entertainment/mankato-mosaic-looking-for-actors-0614#sthash.U9NwDnkE.dpuf

She ends up falling in love and trying to improve corporate culture at a television company that is segregated. Paul J. Hustoles, Chair of the Department of Theater and Dance at MSU is directing the production. Nick Wayne is directing music and Sam Stroll is handling choreography. Father’s Day Buffet at Lone Star Grille in Saint Peter

I have anxiously waited a long while to eat at Lone Star. You see, my wife doesn’t eat BBQ. I do, and I love it! It was Father’s Day and my wife decided to give me a special treat, because I’m a new dad you see. So the buffet at Lone Star was it, and it happened to be a buffet at $20 per person. I did enjoy their tender brisket and succulent rib tips smothered in delicious barbecue sauce. I’m not sure if it qualifies as traditional Texas style BBQ or not, but it definitely was good for Minnesota’s BBQ scene. The cornbread muffins were excellent, though they could’ve used a bit more butter, but hey I’m a butter nut (no pun intended). I love how they offered fresh fruit, a mix of watermelon, strawberries, cantalope, honeydew and pineapple. That is a must a BBQ! The coleslaw could use some help. The potato salad, on the other hand, was out of this world. I couldn’t stop going back for more. The beans and corn, were, well... beans and corn. The chicken was marvelous, according to my wife (I couldn’t get enough of the brisket and tips). The garlic mashed potatoes were awesome, but I remained skeptical of the ham. It looked a little dry, but considering it was a buffet on Father’s Day, who could complain? It was well worth the price, considering the variety of items in the buffet that cost a pretty penny - namely, the brisket and ribs. Compared to Dickey’s in Mankato, Famous Dave’s, Token BBQ in Mapleton and Piggy Blues in Austin, I’d rate the Lone Star a 4 out of 5. Here’s another kicker for the Lone Star: It is located in an awesome rustic historic building called the Konesbruck Hotel. Even the bathrooms are fantastic looking. Atmosphere always matters in the restaurant biz. Their location alone bumps them from 3.5 to 4 in my book. I would certainly recommend any travelers to feast at this delightful local treasure. Minnesota is starting to become a BBQ lover’s inquiry, with Rib Fest nearby at Riverfront Park in Mankato, Token BBQ and Dickey’s all in the area as well. The Lone Star adds a niche level to their game. Each BBQ joint has their own flair and unique character. Lone Star has history, elegance and unique taste. - See more at: http://www.slantedmag.com/?q=food/lone-star-bbq-saint-peter-review-fathers-day-0614#sthash.RY09prfl.dpuf

Fairs & Festivals Pics: ArtSplash and Arts by the River

Arts by the River is the younger of the two summer arts festivals that take place in the Mankato area, in its fourth year as KEYC News reported. This festival lasts a couple of days and features great music, food and beverage vendors and various types of art for sale. The event is a prime opportunity to network and socialize with a wide spectrum of local artists, organizers, vendors, spectators and promoters. The arts and culture community in Mankato is growing along with its infrastructure and business community. The Children’s Museum of Southern Minnesota pitched in to entertain children in the community. Arts by the River continues tomorrow from noon until 5 p.m. The weather was sunny today, but the weather may be unpredictable considering the news of high water, river crest expectations and the threat of flood conditions. The Mankato Gazette free digital newspaper and other local media will be updating the public, along with city and county personnel on weather conditions through the next week. Arts festivals like this one that will be going through the weekend have made the Mankato area a destination for independent artists and merchants to show their work, which adds to the region’s vibrancy. ArtSplash has been around a bit longer. It takes place in North Mankato at the Taylor Library. According to a report from the Mankato Free Press local print newspaper, when the festival began a decade ago in 2004 there were only nine booths that were occupied by vendors. It has grown since ten years ago. The 2014 ArtSplash kicked off Saturday and live music and activities were a central part of the event. Live music is usually integral at a local event in the Mankato area. At the halfway point between 2004 and Saturday, June 21, 2014, the event had grown significantly enough to fill the inside of the library and field outside of the library with vendor booths and it grew enough to fill booths up around the police annex area in North Mankato. The event is free and was held from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. All of the proceeds from food sales, the various activities held and the popular silent auction go toward benefiting the library as well as the Riverside Regional Pet Shelter, a local organization that houses homeless pet animals. All of the vendor-artists donate one piece of artwork to the silent auction at ArtSplash. Located near the Minnesota River, ArtSplash is a recognized arts destination in Southern Minnesota and the Minnesota River Valley. If you missed out on it this year, it may be even bigger by next year. The arts festivals held over this weekend in the Mankato area will certainly show any visitors to the area the region’s vibrancy and community of arts, culture and education. - See more at: http://www.slantedmag.com/?q=arts/arts-festivals-over-weekend-in-mankato-area-show-regions-vibrancy-0614#sthash.MfMy603Q.dpuf
