Meet Ethan From Swizz Apparel

5

Meet Ethan Schweizer, the young entrepreneur behind the brand, Swizz Apparel and new layout and designer for Lawson Media and Publishing and advertising salesperson for Slanted Magazine Southern Minnesota Arts and Culture. The story behind Swizz is one of inspiration and destiny.

Limited Liability Corporation (LLC).

If you lived in the Gage dorms at MSU, you probably at one point or another seen stickers bearing the name “Swizz.” Swizz got its start when Schweizer started a company called String-Dat Lax, where he strung lacrosse sticks for the youth players in his local community. He found that he enjoyed design more than the stringing, so he scrapped the project and started Swizz, wordplay on his last name. Funding came from money left to him from his grandmother who passed away when he was in eighth grade. He had to wait until he graduated high school to use it. And that is what he did. Slowly since then, he has built his brand and continues to do so with his two partners in a

Swizz has a heavy Internet presence and found his way to Lawson Media after being contacted by Rob Lawson, another local entrepreneur. Lawson was intrigued by a Craigslist posting stating that a young local entrepreneur was looking to collaborate on projects. Lawson looked into it and liked the direction Swizz was going. Lawson made contact and the two immediately began discussing how the two could help each other as young startups. A relationship quickly started and Schweizer began contributing to Lawson’s magazine. Swizz Apparel brand items can be found at Fresh, a local skate and apparel shop in downtown Mankato; at www.SwizzApparel.com; and soon will be found on other sites including the Mankato Gazette Community Store and others. Schweizer says what he enjoys most about running his own business is the freedom of creativity and being his own boss. He says he also has enjoyed the attention his clothing designs have brought him. “I most enjoy seeing other people wearing my shirts and even sometimes overhearing random people talk about how much they like my art www.SwizzApparel.com.

Maurice Pendleton opened a business in downtown Mankato with the goal of providing something for young people in the community and he has done it grassroots style. “We doin this from the bottom up, you know what I’m sayin?,” explainedPendletonuponmyfirstvisittohisstoreonFrontStreet. Longtime friend, Mike Madison, who grew up with Pendleton in the Twin Cities, is a full-time employee at Fresh Clothing and Accessories. “We came down here to open a skate shop that makes skateboarding more affordable for the kids,” Madison said. “We’re doing something for the community in the process.” MadisonstartedworkingattheskateshopinJune, buthehasknow Pendletonformanyyearsanddescribeshimaslikeafamilyfriend. Fresh sells modern, urban gear including t-shirts, jewelry, stickers, backpacks, safety gear (helmets, pads, etc.), jeans, shorts, watches, fragrances and headphones. They also carry skateboards, long boards and even can order the fishtail style boards. They carry the needed parts for boards too, including bearings, trucks, grip tape and more. The guys are big fans of music, too. They sell CDs, DVDs, mixtapes and more. Their music selection includes rap, hip-hop, r & b, slow jams, gospel and other genres. They even carry skate magazines. Pendleton, who spent a majority of his youth years in the north metro area said he doesn’t skate himself, but is aware of the trend. “I got the idea from kids who wanted to buy skateboards. We just went for it.” The store has a friendly neighborhood atmosphere and is open Monday through Friday from noon to 8 p.m., Saturday noon to six and Sunday noon to 4. They have also started selling cell phones in the shop. The skate, clothing and accessories part of the business is only one side of the story. Pendleton is also quite the talented music promoter. He was involved with booking acts like Bone Crusher, who played at Buster’s, Young Dro at Red Rocks and other acts in the Midwest. His entertainment wing is called “Hit the Block.” Pendleton operates a recording studio and works on music himself. “We do all types of music,” explained Pendleton enthusiastically. They work with Pro Tools, Native Insturments and other software in the studio. They can also mass duplicate printed/ copied discs for distribution. They do photo shoots and videos as well. They strive to provide an entire artist package. “This is all for the youth,” Pendleton said. “We wanted to have a nice local independent skate shop for the young skaters and keep it fresh!”

A North Mankato Country Music Sensation – Shelby Tweten Shelby Tweten is a senior at Mankato West High School who was invited to take part in the American Idol competition in Los Angeles after she sang “A Temporary Home” and brought a tear to Jennifer Lopez’s eye. Tweten is no doubt a sensation, and she has the ability to evoke a great deal of emotion. Her back story provides even more emotion to those who are fans. Tweten was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and she struggled with depression since 4th grade. She also said she was a victim of bullying. With her mother,

Karrey, the two are guests at the 11th annual Women’s Show. The “American Idol” contestant is expected to be among the big draws this year. Tweten and her mother, Karrey, will present a talk titled “Living, Loving and Learning Through Mental Illness,” at the event set for Sept. 22 at Verizon Wireless Center. The songs Tweten will sing will be about empowerment for women. Not only can she evoke the emotions for music-lovers and fans, but she is an inspiration to young people in general,

with her take-charge presence and leadership abilities, as well as her connection to those who have dealt with these kinds of issues in their personal lives. She definitely strikes a chord with young people. Country music has long been among America’s top markets. Will Tweten be marketable on American Idol as a country star? Who knows. One thing is for sure. She is certainly a star ‘round these parts. Prices will be $7 in advance for adults, $5 for kids 12 and younger, and free for kids 5 and

younger. All tickets sold on the day of the show are $10, with kids 5 and younger still free. Tickets are available at the Verizon Wireless box office, both Hy-Vee locations, online at Ticketmaster, and at the Mayo Clinic Health System Auxiliary Gift Shop. The event at the Verizon Wireless Center also includes a presentation by Mayo psychologist Rosean(cq) Bishop titled, “How to be inspired through everyday life,” a silent auction, exhibitors from health and wellness entities and a raffle.

13 SPECIAL ISSUE So. M N Ar ts & LoDerek Cu ok Ba lture since we were teenagers. I lived in Albert Lea Thro Ianck Elvebak is ug a digital a strange mind. I have been friends with Elvebak h Thartist e Iswith sues Alden. 20the 12time and he lived in an even smaller town called There were few kids at my school who were into avant garde stuff like I was. at

Then I met Elvebak. Elvebak had the same appreciation for independent films and dark comedy as I had. I used to stay up really late on school nights and watch the Independent Film Channel on Direct TV (our dish system ironically was installed in part by an Amish man in the area). Elvebak would come over and we’d watch crazy David Lynch movies like Lost Highway and Wild At Heart. We watched bizarre movies like Pi (movie where the guy drills a hole in his own head). We had that in common. We loved independent off the wall stuff. We were also both fans of dark comedy like Louis C.K., George Carlin, Bill Maher and many others. Derek is a loner artist like myself. He prefers the solitude of writing, drawing, making and creating in his own space and on his own terms. His art takes many forms: video, audio, music, drawing, acting and writing. Derek has written several pieces of unfinished material that includes comedy routines, short stories, longer from narratives, scripts and more. Derek has been indepdently recording music since his early adulthood when I showed him how to use Garageband on the Mac. He has crashed my Mac Mini twice, but that is beside the point. He spends hours crafting sounds alone. Remember, Derek’s a wierd one. He’s also into weird music. He’s like a walking music dictionary, even for some of the most obscure music I’ve ever heard and wondered if it was really music or myself having some sort of mental lapse! He is very much into independent music though, which is great! He’s not really stuck on any one particular genre either. His music recordings are under the pseudonym The Veiny Bubbles. Look up his songs and download them for free on Sound Cloud. Derek has turned his love for film into an art for himself and his own quirky projects. Derek began experimenting with video editing and simple computer animation and began developing videos for his music. He then began incorporating ideas from his writing into creating short animated videos. He started a series on YouTube called The Alright Let’s Talk Show. It is a very crude simple animation with characters that he does the voices for. He even introduces his dad on the show, but again does the voice himself. The Alright Let’s Talk Show is a late night talk show akin to Letterman, Kimmel, Conan, etc. It uses obviously edited in laugh tracks during the jokes. It is a little hard to find his videos on YouTube. Searching with the keywords, “Derek Elvebak Alright Let’s Talk Show” proves to be the best method of searching YouTube’s endless archives of video. Derek also created a short animated film in the film noir style, called Shared Space. It is an eery video about waking up after dying and being stuck in a room with just one other man and a button. Something strange happens every time that one of them presses the button in the room. I don’t want to spoil it for you, so head over to www.slantedmag.com to see the full video, or go to YouTube and check it out! It seems dying is common theme for Derek. He also made a short film about being stuck in a purgatory in a bathroom after swallowing some pills and comitting suicide. He talks to an image in the mirror. Dereks non-animation projects have included a short film called Puddin Pop News. It is a silent film on YouTube. Derek did most of his animations in the beginning in Microsoft Paint. He uses many other tools now, including video editing software and the effects that come with them to craft his stories. Derek Elvebak lives in Prior Lake, Minnesota. He graduated from Alden-Conger High School in 2002. WikiLeaks: A Political Struggle

Julian Assange, and his organization WikiLeaks, may well be the political story of our generation, especially with the way it is weaved together with revolutionary rebellion of the Arab Spring. SLANTED MAG SMAC BEST OF LOCAL ARTS

Local Arts in Southern MN This Best of List includes all of the great artists, arts organizations, galleries and displays of art that make our region such a hotbed of artistic, creative and cultural activity. Southern Minnesota’s diverse creative culture includes everything like street art from local graffers whose works are anonymous by nature (other than their tags) and folk art like paintings of prairies and farmland. The sculpture above used to sit in Old Town. Now it can be seen at Riverfront Park.

Prairie Lakes Regional Arts Council

The Prairie Lakes regional Arts Council provides a number of great programs and opportunities for supporting and

nurturing Southern Minnesota Arts and Culture.

Arts Center of St. Peter

The Arts Center of St. Peter is quite an extraordinary accomplishment for a rural community like St. Peter. There arent many facilities of its kind in rural communities, not only in Minnesota but in the rest of the country. There are regular exhibits and the Arts Center of St. Peter also offers classes and workshops among other things. The Arts Center of St. Peter’s Director is David Goldstein. www.artscentersp.org.

Mankato City Art Walking Sculpture Tour

If the City of Mankato has done anything great for artists and for the community (two ideas that we believe are integrally connected), it has been

the adoption of the sculpture tour. They also incorporated a contest to select works. These works are displayed throughout the city.

The Grand

New Ulm’s interesting beer culture is not the only thing to note about the home of Oktoberfest, it is also home to the Grand Kaberet and Center for Arts and Culture. A renovation of the historic Grand Hotel, it has been put to use for a space that artists, musicians, actors

and other talented individuals can go to showcase their skills and talents.

Emy Frentz Arts Guild/ Twin Rivers Council for the Arts

Through strategic collaboration, the Twin Rivers Council for the Arts enriches and strengthens our communities by celebrating, supporting, and promoting regional arts and culture. http://twinriversarts.org/

Best of Events

Local Events in Southern MN This Best of List includes a list of the best and most influential local events and venues of 2012 covered in Slanted Magazine Southern Minnesota Arts and Culture throughout the course of the year. The Greater Mankato area is home to some of the most talked about venues in the Midwestern United States and has even been ranked among the best rock touring destinations.

Arts in the Park

Arts in the Park at Riverfront Park and Amphitheater didn’t turn out to be amazing or anything (there was a low turnout),

but it was the first time it was put on. It was a great place for such an event, and we’re glad to see they took the sculpture form the former downtown Mankato location and put it out at the park. There were many vendors out there and live music as well.

Rob Zombie and Marilyn Manson at Verizon Wireless Center I was told that Manson is the best stage performer ever. However, a number of people told me how Zombie upstaged Manson at this show. The Verizon Wireless needs to have more events like this to compete as a major civic center in the Midwest.

Oktoberfest

New Ulm’s Oktoberfest, which has now been replicated (though not very well) by Mankato, St. Peter, North Mankato and others, is a long held tradition in the 99% German town of New Ulm. This event, which has great support from the brewing community and the drinking/having fun community alike. New Ulm’s Oktoberfest runs the whole month of October and features too many types of event to even name here.

Harmony Park Harmony Park is a rural mecca for hipsters, hippies, folk music and illicit activities but many types of people go to the various events held there such

as Bella Madre, Project Earth, Harvest Festival and many others. It’s like Minnesota’s small town Woodstock! The park is located in Geneva, MN.

Mankato Mosaic

This group of contemporary actors, stagehands and the like are a local group of actors that travel, take to the stage and entertain people with their own written plays as well as adaptions and other work.

Ribfest

What more could you really ask for but great music, great food, great beer and a whole lot of people that want to hang out in the hot summer and have a good time? Other than this event, you’re lookin at fairs.

Technology Southern MN This best of list refers to the technology we use here in Southern Minnesota that has lasting effects on our daily practical lives but also on the culture itself. Here are the most interesting stories surrounding 2012 technology.

Renewable Energy and Efficient Systems If we are going to make a list of the best of technology, then we must list not only the cool stuff, but also the stuff that will lead us into the future. Renewable energy. at this point, is a technology that absolutely must be harnessed if we are to ever rid ourselves of dependence on foreign and domestic oil use. Companies like Green Energy

Solutions in Mankato provide technology to businesses and individuals that save energy. GES makes custom solutions for solar panel electricity. Others have taken steps into their own hands, however this requires specific technology skills that most of us don’t have, but nonetheless, it’s still pretty cool. An example would be Doug Esser, of Minnesota Lake, who built his own geothermal and solar system for heating water. He designed the software and hardware on his own. He is an electrical engineer.

Mobile Devices

Mobile devices are definitely on the 2012 best of list simply because their use and evolution have exploded over the past year. Watch for more to come.

Robotics and Mecha-

tronics Programs

Mechatronics and robotics made the 2012 best of list because of their popularity and their significance to the f u ture of technology in a number of industries. Google, Apple, Microsoft and other high tech companies have inspired an entire generation of youth to become involved in the programming of hardware and software. This doesn’t extend just to apps and websites. Students are now competeting

ing. People seem to also be more concerned about the

in national robotics competitions like the students in St. Peter High School and joining college programs like South Central College’s mechatronics program. munity. They often times start small, like Indigo Organic in Mankato or St. Peter Food Coop (not so small anymore :). 2012 was another year of growth of the organic movement. Organic farms and community farming are also notable.

Microbrewing

Organic

Food Cooperatives

Cooperatives may very well be the future of ethical and responsible business. Food cooperatives are a great model and they seem to be sprouting up more and more as people become more concious of their eating and spending habits. People are also more concerned about where their money is go-

success of the business when they are the actual part owners and part of a community of people with the same goals. These are the ideas behind groups like the St. Peter Food Coop, Blue Earth Food Coop and Crystal Coop. There is also now a Mankato Food Coop coming and possibly one coming to North Mankato.

The organic movement seems to be part environmental/ecological and part health-concious. But it is definitely a trend and a trend to watch, certainly. As the nation (referring to its population, not its government/institutions) becomes greener and more concerned with the food they eat and the other things they put into their bodies (teen smoking rates are declining), the number of alternative lifestyle brands, companies, etc. will come into existence as part of the com-

Microbrewing has also become a fascination and 2012 marked the year of two developments: Mankato Brewery and Growler, a beer magazine that can be found at Patricks in St. Peter.

Wine Making

Wine is another hot development in Southern Minnesota. Vineyards and wineries include the Winery and Morgan Creek in New Ulm, Indian Island in Janesville, Glenmassan in Winnebago, Chankaska in Kasota and many others.
