3DPrinting 3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing, might just be the next breakthrough technology that could help pull the economy out of the ditch, bring manufacturing back and make the process of making things and getting a job making them much easier. In fact, there are 3D printers available online for sale for just a few thousand dollars. Any young entrrepreneur could pick a couple up and start his/her own 3D print shop. 3D printing differs from most machining processes, which are a subtractive process because they take away from layers by cutting or drilling. 3D printing is the opposite. It adds to each layer with material of varying shapes. 3D printing may even be used for organs or body parts in the future! Imagine taking a CAD model, then scaling it bigger or smaller. A really talented sculptor could make a sculpture that can be scanned with a laser to make a digital blueprint to have 3D printed in a larger or smaller scale. It is WYSIWYG, meaning the virtual model is pretty much identical to the real thing! So what type of material is used to print and how? CityArt Walking Sculpture Tour 2013 34 new sculptures installed May 18
The CityArt Walking Sculpture Tour welcomed thirty-four new sculptures on Saturday, May 18th into the City Centers of Mankato and North Mankato. The program features unique, stunning works of art created by talented artists from 17 different states in the U.S., 3 countries and also pieces by several local artists. The materials of sculpture range from carved marble taken from the original Italian foundry of Leonardo da Vinci to molded plastic bottles. Kato Moving and Storage has once again provided storage space, moving trucks and other resources to transport and house the sculptures in Mankato prior to installation while Vetter Stone and Jones Metal have continued to generously donate time and material to accommodate the expanding display of sculptures. CityArt Coordinator, Noelle Lawton stated, “The public is going to be amazed at this new group of sculptures. The creative whimsy of some of the pieces is sure to bring a smile!” On Saturday, May 18th from 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm, after installation, CityArt is hosted a public Artists’ Reception at Number 4 American Bar and Kitchen. The reception was an event where the public had a chance to meet the artists in attendance, view the sculptures and celebrate the new tour together. CityArt is delighted to be able to provide beautiful hanging flower baskets along the walk again this year, courtesy of a generous sponsorship from Lyle and Kay Jacobson, a scavenger hunt for children with an opportunity to earn free admission to the Children’s Museum of Southern Minnesota or Blue Earth County Historical Society, a community wide photo contest with cash prizes and a selfguided audio tour. More information on these features of the tour can be found at the CityArt website, www.cityartmankato.com. “Planning for CityArt began 6 years ago and this week, with our third official installation of the project, it is wonderful to see the program fulfill its original goals; to bring exciting, quality, renowned public art to our downtown area and grow our community’s permanent public art collection” says Tami Paulsen, one of the founders and Chairperson of the CityArt program. All 34 pieces will be exhibited year round, and the public will have the opportunity to vote on their favorite sculpture. This year the “People’s Choice Award” sculpture will be purchased by the City Center Partnership and again permanently installed in the City Center. Additionally, all of the sculptures will be available for purchase or lease at the end of the tour next spring. T� to live, shop, work and play. The City Center Partnership is devoted to enhancing the City Center’s vitality and visibility throughout the Greater Mankato community and beyond.

MEET VALOR TRACKS HEAVY MN MUSIC
Bio: Too often do we all find ourselves saying one band sounds exactly alike to another. This situation is only made worse when turning on any particular top 40 radio station. Bands are left to either conform and fit the current mold or step outside of the norm and create something of their own. This is Valor Tracks. Officially formed in the summer of 2011, Valor Tracks was created from the members of several former bands around central and southern MN. They have been performing across all parts of MN and recently branching out to neighboring states with no sign of slowing down. The band strives on a DIY mindset, handling all booking and business on their own with a humble mentality. Every opp� The band will be spending the summer making their way to new cities across the region and writing material for a fall release. This year is off to a great start already and the band is excited for what is in store for their future. �

Don’t you just love homemade baked goods from scratch? Wouldn’t it be great if that same homemade, baked-from-scratch flavor existed in a universe near you? Well, it does actually, locally in fact! A new bakery shop and cafe has opened in the Mankato Place, near beautiful City Center Mankato, in the historic downtown area. Kirsten Markiewicz opened the shop enthusiastically with the desire to bring that health-conscious, home-cooked vibe to the area. Flour Power Bakery was concieved by Markiewicz to give people in the Mankato area an option for fresh, from scratch baked goods, everything from breads to pies. Like many people, Markiewicz said that her career path has been anything but typical. “I’ve had a crooked path in my career up to this point,” Markiewicz chuckled explaining. “I have a lot of interests but this one

seems to have come back again and again.” Markiewicz explained that her interest in baking came from the home-cooked meals she and her family would share growing up. In fact, her two brothers have culinary degrees and her father was trained as a chef in the military. “It’s kind of in my blood,” she said. Markiewicz said she always envisioned having some type of shop – a creative outlet for kitchen mastery. “I have always been pretty fascinated with food and what can be done with it,” she said. Markiewicz’s father was a cook in the air force in France. Eventually, after tiring of the corporate lifestyle of IBM, her father made a decision that would influence the family’s lifestyle thereafter. IBM had transferred her dad, a systems analyst in the 1970’s, from Chicago to Manassas, Virginia. After a time, her father decided it was time to move to Bemidji, MN, where the family would operate a thriving restaurant. One recent invention Kirsten came up with was influenced from her mother’s 70’s cocktail party era Rumaki with chicken livers and baconwrapped water chestnuts broiled. Markiewicz made a version to suit Minnesotan tastes by replacing the chicken livers with tasty meatballs. “Even those early childhood experiences can inspire you,” she explained. “You never know when an idea is going to pop. I always think that having a diverse background helps add to the mix.” Markiewicz started her mission of baking excellence with the farmer’s market a few years ago and eventu-
ally brought the concept to a location in the Mankato Place on January 30, 2013. “We had this great momentum,” Markiewicz added. “Mankato didn’t really have an independent bakery so I think there was a demand. I felt we could carry this momentum from the farmer’s market into something bigger.” Markiewicz honed her skills working in bakeries. Now her own bakery is open for breakfast and lunch. She caters and does business lunches as well. There are cakes of all kinds, fresh baked breads, cookies and more. Everything is made from scratch and there is a new special daily as well as daily soups. Customers can call ahead for bake orders at 507-345-3721.

MANKATO EVENT CENTER Presented by Bethany Lutheran College Media and Fine Arts Deparment Bethany Lutheran College, which has been busy expanding its offering of media arts classes as is evident with the extremely vibrant ad campaigns they have recently launched, held its first Speechless Film Festival this year at the Mankato Place - Mankato Event Center and Maverick 4
Theater space. 4 screens projected independent international films that were judged on aspects of visual storytelling. A Trampled by Turtles music video was debuted at the Speechless Film Festival in the Mankato Event Center and Maverick 4 Theater.
Dave Simonett – guitar, lead vocals, harmonica was there to debut the video, as was the model set that the band wanted given to them after it was created. Judges were Jeff Boortz, Georgia State University; Don Larsson, Ph.D., Minnesota
State University; Tim & Shelley, KMSU Radio Show. Look for the program printed for the Speechless Film Festival to see which films were shown at the event. The programs are available right outside the Mankato Event Center in the same newsrack as Slanted Mag S.M.A.C.
