Comedian Michael Harrison Comes to Kato for Live Standup Comedy Show at Mankato Event Center March 13

Don’t miss Mankato Comedy’s next show at the Mankato Event Center on Thursday, March 13 at 8 p.m. Michael Harrison will be swinging through Mankato on his way from Toronto, Ontario. Mankato Comedy’s Zack Kolars will be hosting again, along with members of Mankato Comedy and Maverick Comedy Club. Hailing from the prairies, Michael has become a burst of fresh air in the comedy scene with his engaging stories and hilarious observations on life. Among his many accolades, Mike’s humor has landed him glowing reviews at festivals all across North America and his own national comedy special. Besides touring extensively in North America, he has also found time to develop a solid acting resume with appearances in NBC’s “The Bridge” and “Queer as Folk.” Recently, Michael was on the nationally syndicated Bob & Tom Radio Show. He is one act you don’t want to miss!

Mankato Mosaic: April Fools’ Show has bigger stars, more comedy – and that’s no joke!

Cabaret Le Ruse’s “Fool Me Once” will feature musicians Billy Steiner, Ron Arsenault and Dave Pengra. And the comedy skits keep coming as the troupe performs its April Fools show 8 p.m. Saturday, March 29, at the Arts Center of St. Peter and 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 1 at the Mankato Event Center. With some help from KMSU radio, the Cabaret troupe is bringing along a taste of the Lost Walleyes and City Mouse into the String Theory musical group. And writers are back with some new skits, such as: · Mystical Crystal: A hot-headed skeptic and a jaded tarot card reader discover that “the cards never lie.” And when it comes to fate, take what you can get. · Hair Band: A rabid hair band fan thinks she has found the real lead guitar player for The Reptiles – or has she? · And Gravitone v Gravitone: When the superhero of better choices is duplicated, who is able to tell which Gravitone is the REAL superhero? Picking the wrong one could make the world “more stupider.” Writers Esther Hoffmann, Greg Abbott and John Rezmerski return with a new slate of comedy to make for an enjoyable evening out – from evil stoplights to Pink Pantherish Diamond Thief detectives. “The idea for this show has been based on the ruse ,” said String Theory musician Eli Hoehn. “Is the main character telling the truth? Who is the real hero and the real evildoer? There’s a lot of switching things up.” One instance is having Lost Walleye front man Ron Arsenault in a bit part for the Hair Band skit. “The best part about it is that I get to wear a mullet,” Arsenault said. “The skin-tight leather pants – I may have to pass on that.” Hoffmann brings some of her own wacky personal events to life, such as the voice-mail-from-hell skit, “For Quality Purposes.” “It’s a short comedy about how our calls are ‘screened’ by inanimate servers,” she said. “And all of the buttons that are pushed before you even speak to a living representative.” Rezmerski brings a little poetry to the evening, as well as a mysterious story of Margaret Drabble, the famous author who has at least 20 (or maybe 21) novels to her credit. “It’s a chance to have a fun night out,” said Hoehn. “Some great music, lots of laughs, and grab dinner before the show.” Tickets are $10 in advance at the Arts Center of St. Peter or online at www.cabaretleruse.com. The show will also be performed 8 p.m. Friday, March 28, at the Roadhaus in Henderson; 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 1, at the Mankato Event Center; and 8 p.m. Friday, April 4, at the Grand Kabaret in New Ulm. - See more at: http://www.slantedmag.com/?q=entertainment/fool-me-once-2014-mankato-mosaic#sthash.6fZUJ0Ug.dpuf

VISUAL SONNETS BY PATTI RUSKEY

SAINT PETER, MINN. – The Arts Center of Saint Peter will feature “Visual Sonnets,” paintings by Mankato-based artist, entrepreneur and activist Patti Ruskey, from April 4-May 4 in the Arts Center’s Moline Gallery. “Visual Sonnets,” including selected works recently exhibited at the Bloomington Arts Center, explores themes of social disharmony, social class stratification and relationships between humans and the natural world. “Shakespeare’s plays are constantly being reinterpreted, and that fascinates me,” Ruskey says. “This is my attempt to do something similar in a different medium. By using literary lines taken out of context, I’m attempting to create visual sonnets, expressing a single theme or idea with a subtle argument or debate built into the work.” A reception and artist’s talk will take place on Saturday, April 12, from 4:00-6:00 p.m. the exhibit and the reception are free and open to the public. The Arts Center’s lower gallery will be closed during the April 4-May 4 exhibit for renovations funded by a grant from the Prairie Lakes Regional Arts Council. Since 1979, the Arts Center of Saint Peter has hosted creative performances, classes for youth and adults, exhibits and more, serving residents of Saint Peter and the surrounding region. The galleries are free and open to the public. Hours and information are at www. artscentersp.org. - See more at: http://www.slantedmag. com/?q=art/visual-sonnets-by-patti-ruskeyat-arts-center-of-st-peter-april-2014#sthash. TR97Ovg0.dpuf

New City Art Sculpture Installations Coming to Mankato Area Real Soon MANKATO, MN - The CityArt Walking Sculpture Tour is preparing to take down the 2013 sculptures on April 5 in preparation for the installation of new sculptures on May 17. Artists in the program are eager to sell their sculpture and as a result many of the asking prices are being reduced. Noelle Lawton, CityArt Coordinator states, “The Greater Mankato community has a unique opportunity here. Sculpture programs are popping up all over the country, but CityArt stands out because we showcase a wide variety of sculptures from all over the world, including Africa, Italy and Canada.” The sales and lease component to public art programming is important because the more sculptures that are sold, the more artists are attracted to this specific program. Additionally, each sale or lease helps support the CityArt program, which benefits the entire community. Lawton states, “We receive countless emails, calls and personal contacts from individuals thanking us for bringing CityArt to Mankato. It has changed the landscape of our down town and created a hotbed for artists.” Information on each sculpture including pricing can be found on the CityArt Walking Sculpture Tour website, www.cityartmankato.com. If you would like to inquire about purchasing or leasing a sculpture, please contact Noelle Lawton, CityArt Coordinator at noelle@cityartmankato.com or 507.388.1062. - See more at: http://www.slantedmag.com/?q=arts/new-city-art-coming-soon-tomankato#sthash.enP2TwZL.dpuf

Mankato Farmers Market to Move to Best Buy From Madison East Center

The Mankato Farmers Market will move to a new location, at the parking lot of Best Buy, moving from their Madison East Mall parking lot location, where a bus route is located. ES Organics posted on its Twitter account that the move was to be made. The Mankato Farmer’s Market needed to make a decision about where to move the market to and their organizers spent a great deal of time trying to find an accommodating venue and Best Buy was it. According to a report in Mankato Free Press, the Madison East Mall expressed a need for more space for parking and construction equipment. Several new restaurants and other businesses have opened nearby. The Mankato Farmer’s Market will enjoy a busier thoroughfare, with more connection to agriculture being on Hwy. 22, a busy commuter route for people going within and outside Mankato city limits. The Mankato Farmer’s Market has always enjoyed quite a crowd of people who are

looking for delicious organic food grown on the farm. There are a number of other items frequently offered at the market too, such as hand-made soaps, jams and pickled foods. There continues to be a local interest in food that is grown in Southern Minnesota. The Mankato Farmer’s Market is also a community of people that have like interests and enjoy each others’ company. Of course, there are always folks that come just to shop fresh! - See more at: http:// w w w. s l a n t e d m a g . com/?q=food/mankatofarmers-market-movesto-best-buy#sthash. XKKHL4gR.dpuf

Mankato Area Roller Derby Girls Get Ready for Another Smashing Season The Mankato Area Roller Derby Girls or MAD Girls are gearing up for another smashing season. Their home opener is against the Med City Mafia, a team from the Rochester metro area. They already faced the Bemidji team, Whiltle Punks in February. The Mankato Area Roller Derby Girls announced on their Facebook page that tickets are on sale for the home opener at the Verizon Wireless Center in downtown Mankato in what’s known as City Center. This is the second official season for MAD Girls, who have gained a popular following in the area. They boast more than 2,000 Facebook likes and many fans in the state of Minnesota. They have their own brand, style and even sponsors to help them in their quest of being the baddest skate team of women in the Mankato area. They are also looking for more “fresh meat” (rookies) to try out for the team. They would like to want to grow their team to include enough skaters for two different teams or split up into home teams to skate against each other, according to a statement on their website. Take a look at this video from last March. It will give you an idea of what a small roller derby match is like. Those at the Verizon Wireless Center are generally bigger and more fans are present, so this is purely a small taste. - See more at: http://www.slantedmag.com/?q=culture/mad-girls-mankato-2014-season-2014#sthash.Jcb8ARTP.dpuf

Banks Get Federal Guidelines to Work With Pot Dealers on the Legal Tip

Rob Lawson contributed some news and analysis to the Guardian Liberty Voice of the tangle between state laws that conflict with federal laws over drug policy and a new move by the White House to let banks conduct legal business with the pot industry. Banks were previously hesitant to work with dispensaries, growers and such because they could have been hit with serious federal racketeering charges because of the conflicting federal classification of marijuana. Obama’s administration has advised the Justice Department not to prioritize small drug offenses. In other drug related news, Mario Guzman, Mexico’s infamous Seniola Cartel drug lord has reportedly been arrested in a joint sting between Mexican and American agencies. The next question is, how long will he be in custody? He once broke out of a maximum security Mexican federal prison. He has been described by some in the media as “like a God” in Mexico, but others would have far different descriptions of the man. Forbes has described hi as one of the most powerful people in the world. Lawson is a regular contributor to the Las Vegas based digital newspaper Guardian Liberty Voice. He writes about U.S. national news and trends. He is also working on a project called the Drug War Times and is a former Roswell Daily Record (New Mexico) crime and courts reporter and covered various elements of drugs, law and society. - See more at: http://www.slantedmag.com/?q=society/banks-get-guidelines-to-work-with-pot-dealers-legally#sthash.mBbmOz0M. dpuf

New Slanted Mag Website and Slanted Mobile App Released with Awesome Features

Slanted Magazine Southern Minnesota Arts & Culture is proud to announce the launch of their new and improved website at http://www.slantedmag.com. The new website is a major improvement from the former website, which only had six tabs and no dynamic content. The former website was only able to be updated monthly with the print magazine because of hosting and platform restrictions involved. Now each story has its own unique page and the site can be updated with new unique content as much as needed. The website will differ from the print magazine slightly. Here’s what’s coming: Local, Regional and National Content Slantedmag.com will still focus its material effort in the Greater Mankato area, including Mankato, North Mankato, Saint Peter, New Ulm, Owatonna and Waseca, but the website will now expand into areas of the twin cities and other parts of Southern Minnesota including Rochester, Worthington, Albert Lea, Austin, Winona and other towns and cities. From time to time, there might be coverage coming from outside the coverage area such as Duluth, St. Cloud, Faribault and Grand Forks. Slanted Mag will also now feature many other types of stories from around the nation and the world to keep giving our readers interesting content from other areas out of reach and to garner interest from readers around the state, nation and world. It is our hope that this content will help also provide a glimpse of our corner of the world and our unique culture. We also hope that this interest converts to some tourists that want to see what our Greater Mankato area has to offer. We also hope it will attract more artists, music and entertainment to the area to enrich our community even further. More Sections You will see a broad range of sections within the top tabs of slantedmag.com. Each section is updated only with content of its particular nature: Arts, Culture, Food & Drink, Music, Society, Photos, Video, News, Entertainment, Events and Tech. There are also interactive sections for readers who want to get involved in Slanted Mag. There is a section to submit content directly to Slanted Mag staff. This is a great area for press releases, story pitches and photo submissions. There is a section for Events. Those can still be submitted to slantedcreations@gmail.com but in the coming weeks, there will be an area to submit events directly on that page. Digital Issue The digital issue of Slanted Mag now has its own dedicated section with links to the archives and back orders. Slanted Mag may also consider a “premium” newsstand issue with more pages, premium member discounts on events and other added bonuses. It will be available for paid subscription only. There will be a beta trial, which will determine whether it’s a good fit or not based on feedback. More Video Slanted Mag has a video section and there will be an assertive effort to keep updating our library of videos and YouTube content (subscribe at youtube.com/slantedmagmn). Entertainment Booking Bands, artists, entertainers, party planners and venues can now use our booking button on our homepage to book their shows. This option has been on our Facebook page for a long time now. Slanted Store Coming Soon Slanted Mag will also offer an E-Commerce option on its website. Sellers who are already doing business with the LMP Store will be able to display their products on yet another shopping site. Call (612) 460-5851 to learn more.
