Film: Made in Mankato

Making it in the film, video and multimedia industry is tough. There are very few jobs in the market, company creative budgets are shrinking and technology is constantly changing. Some things don’t change, however. For instance, a real passionate video or film maker doesn’t stop working on projects, paid or unpaid. Just like any artist, writer or musician, the film maker is bound by creative energy and obligated to the challenge compelling them to produce great work, no matter the financial outcome. This challenge can become great inspiration for individuals like Jordan Pow-

ers, who ultimately inspired Ted and Tonya Wittman and a handful of others, plus more than 1,000 peers on the social network, Facebook. The film cult in Mankato begins... In April 2013, Jordan set out to live his dream of becoming a pro film and video professional, but he wanted to begin with an idea that *National average annual savings based on data from customers who reported savings by switching to Esurance between 12/1/11 and 4/30/12. would give something back to the local community. He began working © 2012 Esurance Insurance Services, Inc. All rights reserved. CA License #0G87829 on a film for the Dork Den, an interesting local business in Mankato. The idea and the dedication to take steps to complete it paid off when Jordan met Tonya and Ted, while working solo on the project. Soon, the creative twin siblings joined Jordan to complete the project and began talking about future projects. Everything for Made in Mankato happened in a whirlwind, Jordan remembers. U.S. residents set to get new infrared heaters to save up to 50% on heating bills for only $159 and free shipping Compared to the Suggested Retail Price of $399.95 this is a great opportunity for our residents to own one of the highest quality, energy saving, cool-to-the-touch, portable infrared heaters available today, and stop spending a fortune on heating bills. The first 785 callers who beat the 48-hour deadline are getting these money saving portable infrared heaters.

■Simply Plug it in: Saving money on heating bills is very easy with an iHeater infrared heater. Today’s distribution is intended to help those in need of keeping warm this winter without spending too much on heating bills.

If you or a loved one has difficulty paying for heating bills, then this distribution of brand new portable infrared heaters is your chance to make life a little easier. These infrared heaters warm the room evenly and efficiently without drying out the air. They never get hot to the touch, like other heaters, so they are safe for pets and children. These revolutionary infrared heaters are changing the lives for many that find it difficult to pay for the high cost of heating a home. Infrared heat warms in a way similar to the warmth we feel from the sun, it’s been described by many as “bone warming” heat. It is

completely safe and does not deplete oxygen from the air, which would make you tired, nor dry out the air, which irritates your skin. The iHeater brand is said to be the most sought after brand of infrared heaters. iHeaters have been selling strong for many years, they have in-house customer service located in Indianapolis, Indiana. The iHeater infrared heating elements are backed by a lifetime warranty and don’t burn out, like other low-end brands of infrared

heaters that use bulbs. Similar infrared heaters of this quality are expensive, the suggested retail on this unit is $399.95, but state residents are being urged to call the Toll Free hotline listed below because the first 785 callers who beat the 48hour deadline will be able to claim one of these infrared iHeaters and have it delivered directly to their door for only $159 and the shipping is free. This is an extraordinary opportunity for those in need of help on winter heating bills. “We’re preparing ourselves for all the calls because a program like this, for a new infrared heater of this quality, has never been released before. So if the lines are busy, keep trying. We’ll answer every call in the order they are received” Brinkman said.

Made in Mankato continued..

“We launched really fast,” he explained. “I had formerly worked at other production companies, and I really wanted to incorporate my passion and talent for photography and video production into something that I could give back to my community.” Made in Mankato was born. The launch took place September 1. Jordan and the others never anticipated such rapid growth. “We didn’t know how the community would respond,” Jordan recalls. “But they really wanted this. It was powerful for everybody.” In just a couple weeks time, the Made in Mankato Facebook page had more than 1,000 likes. This was even before any videos were posted. There’s a hunger for independent film in Mankato? Well, yes there was a film festival hosted downtown by Bethany Lutheran College some time ago. Made in Mankato offers a local business edge. They select each business for a free video production by the unique qualities of the business to the Mankato area. Sorry franchises, you’ll have to pay for your productions! The second installment was done for Mankato Brewery and work was also done most recently with Salvage Sisters. The Facebook buzz was intense during the Dork Den project and Made in Mankato posed the question, “What else would you like to see us produce?” to get ideas. There were more than 160 responses. Tonya was jubilant. “Ultimately, we all have the passion for this and want to give something back to the community, but we also just really want to see the film community in the Make the Switch to DISH Today Mankato area grow,” she said. and Save Up To 50% Tonya expressed that Made in Mankato is looking to grow and expand and l possibly seek investment for their future of film making. Games: X Box 1/PS4

The hysteria is among us after the tremendous amount of buzz about the Sony Playstation 4 and Microsoft XBox One consoles released this holiday season and already sold out at many retail locations. XBox and Playstation have remained the top consoles and rivals of the market for a while now since XBox’s initial release. The Playstation series has some history to it now, with one version more than its rival at Microsoft. Nintendo is more of a family and kid’s market these days. There is an Android console on the market now, but according to many reviews, it doesn’t hold up among the competition very well yet. According to retail business research from BusinessWeek, the XBox One is a “loss leader” meaning they only make about $28 per console or less with all of the research and development costs figured into the equation. Also, according to USA Today who cited survey data (as of this writing), Playstaion 4 is on more consumers’ minds It’s not clear what this signals yet. So what are they roots of these two popular gaming systems, both developed by companies that had little to do with gaming in the near past? XBox XBox was introduced in 2001, shortly after the second Playstation effort. It began as a side project of Microsoft developers, who were convinced they would be fired for working more on a pet project at Microsoft rather than doing their jobs. Turns out Gates liked the idea and helped it along, so the story goes. The XBox 360 was released in 2005. Kinect control was introduced to compete with the Wii, then Playstation added their own version. XBox helped innovate online gaming, and that makes sense for an IT company like Microsoft. XBox live has changed much of the gaming industry since time. With the XBox One, users can record and stream gameplay, control functions using Kinect-based voice control and integrate digital television.

Playstation Playstation, which is manufactured and sold by Sony Corp., a Japanese corporation that specializes in consumer and professional grade electronics and equipment developed the original Playstation console in the late 1990s. The PS2 came out in 2000 and broke the record for most consoles sold of all time. The PS3 was released in 2006. Since the release of the original PS, the franchise has developed new controllers and created a mobile gaming device called PSP. There is even a Playstation Magazine. The Playstation has history with Nintendo, ironically. It was conceived in 1988 to be a CD-ROM for another console with Nintendo, supposedly. Bad blood rippled between the two companies and the Playstation was made to be a direct competitor with Nintendo, so the story goes. The Playstation now has mass storage capabilities, 8 Gigs of memory and lightening fast PC processors make it a formidable opponent to XBox One. Both systems offer content delivery services. There are also new apps, mobile gaming and new controller features.

BIZ: Technology at work

It’s becoming more and more of a digital world, with mass amounts of data and technology-driven processes becoming more focal in our daily routines. There are many broad implications for what this type of atmosphere means to the individual and to society as a whole even, but how does this new digital age transition to the workplace environment? Well, it mostly depends on the job itself and the company culture. In IT, we have many wonderful acronyms. In the business world of IT, there is one called BYOD (Bring Your Own Device), and in fact many educational institutions down to primary grades are now employing such policies. This has a profound implication for business: eventually, device use among all employees as a tool of the trade may become inevitable. We aren’t there yet, though. The fact is, many businesses simply don’t need a BYOD policy, other than DBADD (Don’t Bring Any Damn Devices!). That last acronym isn’t an IT phrase, I actually just made it up. For instance, a manufacturing plant that still requires humans to pay attention to their line, machine, etc. probably has no business with a BYOD policy, enabling the use of distracting devices in their employees’ hands. There also hasn’t been a solid case made for food service workers. Casino card dealers certainly would have to follow the DBADD rule. But who knows, maybe in the future the cards will even be digital and dealt directly to our devices -- most of Wall Street is digital! Many companies that are information technology driven, as many companies are becoming as we rely more on machines to complete tasks, will have a BYOD policy in place, but it won’t stop there. Security policies have to be figured in for the use of data on personal devices, employee devices, the cloud, social media, telecommunications and other technological devices. With this trend, comes a premium to employees with the right amount of tech skills to meet the burgeoning demand from consumer and business markets for innovative technology development and maintenance. IT and CRM (Customer Relationship Management) will be hot careers for young professionals in the coming few years as the amount of data, cloud use and mobile use explodes. Keep an eye out for disruptive technologies as well, such as 3D printing, personal fabrication, contour crafting, the web of things, BitCoin, Modular Block-based smartphones (Google Blokphone) and other tech processes that join the marketplace. Competition will be fierce and a balanced blend of customer service and innovation will be rewarded from customers who have high expectationsin the digital age.

Promoting Music On The Web Locally/Globally

The art of music has changed through a natrual progression of shared culture and wisdom. The science and technology end of it has certainly changed. Somewhere in between, the music business has made a drastic change, or has it? Before records were even put into reproduction on vinyl for the phonograph, they were offered up as written published works (and still are, but sold in a much different way) for a parlor piano, house band, orchestra, opera or other instrument. But before this, the intellectual value had little trade value other than cultural. Live festivities were held in high regard in many societies however, and musicians held great value to communities during gatherings.

The same is becoming true today of the modern music business. Outside sponsors and promoters are becoming the backbone of a local music business that uses the Internet and mobile web to promote their music in hopes to sell out gigs and tour, then go for sponsors, then endorsements, merchandising, then maybe sell some digital content. One can draw parallels between other media industries as well, but the strategies for video, comedy, news, animation, design and photography are all quite different. For music, the following websites and apps are used by musicians to promote:

Hop-Trippin’

The elements of a good craft beer are not easy to gauge because we all have different tastes for different things, which is probably what has drawn such a buzz, particularly in Southern Minnesota, for craft beer excellence. Well, that and the fact that we have local breweries like Mankato Brewery and Schell’s in New Ulm. The Craft Beer Expo in Mankato plays host to a mass of beer brewers, enthusiasts, accessory manufacturers, hobbyists and more. This month, Slanted Mag reviews one of the seasonals from Deschutes called Hop Trip, which was carefully sampled at Patrick’s on Third in Saint Peter. The ale’s first impression on my tongue was quite delightful and refreshing. It was like a cold and refreshing warm feeling, if that makes any damn sense (it will after a few Hop Trips, I’m sure of it...). The frothy beer is perfect for the fall season, with its twist of spices and citrus, combined to make a great palette cleanser or the perfect relaxing beverage to drink during a windy fall day. According to Deschutes, the brewers get their hops sometime near Labor Day on Doug Weather’s field (disclosure: no idea who that is...) near Salem to harvest the hops. They also say that its brewed with salmon safe hops, which is good for salmon, right (disclosure: beer and salmon a great combination). New Brew Tech.

Indeed Brewing Company Announces Second Expansion, Becomes Fastest-Growing Brewery in Minnesota Press Release: Indeed Brewing indeedbrewing.com Indeed Brewing Company beer will soon be available to more craft beer fans around Minnesota. Today, the company announces plans to increase its production capacity and distribution area in response to the overwhelming demand for its locally crafted beer. With the production increase, Indeed Brewing has become the fastest-growing brewery in Minnesota and is poised to become one of the 10 largest breweries in the state. The expansion includes additional cellar tanks, production equipment and the hiring of additional employees at its existing 13,000 square-foot facility in NE Minneapolis, as well as a new distribution partnership with Dahlheimer Beverage. This expansion is Indeed Brewing’s second since its founding in 2011. In January, Indeed Brewing announced a $250,000 expansion that doubled the company’s initial capacity from 3,200 BBLs to 6,400 BBLs. With the new expansion, Indeed Brewing is on pace to produce 12,000 BBLs in 2014, beating the company’s projections for its fifth year in business and positioning it as the sixth-largest brewery in the state. Indeed Brewing will add a set of two 60 BBL fermenters and one 60 BBL bright tank in January, followed by a matching set in April. During the summer, the brewery will add new 120 BBL tanks in an old boiler room currently being converted to house the equipment. Additional equipment purchases include a hop cannon for dry-hopping beers and a separator, which will improve the consistency and shelf-stability of Indeed Brewing’s beer. The company also anticipates the hiring of an additional brewer and three to four additional full-time staff. “Currently the demand for our beer is greater than our supply,” said Indeed Brewing Co-Founder Tom Whisenand. “We’re excited to bring our beer to more consumers, while also adding equipment to increase quality and consistency. Craft beer consumers in Minnesota are getting more and more sophisticated, so it’s important we are able to meet both the demand and the quality expectations they have for Indeed.” Indeed Brewing’s beer will reach a new segment of the fast-growing craft beer audience thanks to its new partnership with Dahlheimer Beverage. The distribution company will help Indeed Brewing reach an even wider audience thanks to an expanded distribution area. Starting November 1, Dahlheimer Beverage will distribute Indeed Brewing’s beer to the outer Metro area, stretching from St. Cloud in the northwest to Mille Lacs in the north and the Wisconsin border to the east. “Dahlheimer Beverage is very excited to team with Indeed as a distrib{ GIVE THE GOOD STUFF } utor partner,” said Nick Dahlheimer, Receive a Pub 500 General Sales Manager of Dahl$5 BONUS CARD heimer Beverage. “Quality in craft for every $25 you spend in gift cards. beer is a top priority for any distribu(Limited time offer. Analyzing the relationship between architecture design and technology Architecture is a fascinating world of art that is so closely linked to commerce that creativity isn’t only appreciated, it’s vital. New technologies, movements and developments have pushed the use of technology in every direction in every industry. Housing, building construction and architecture are no different. We have already seen how technology can be used to change the way buildings are constructed for practical purposes such as weather and natural disaster factoring. But how has technology been utilized to change design, change the process of building or enhance living conditions? How has tech been incorporated into architecture? Slanted Mag has researched four developments: Green Gadgets Remember geodesic domes and solar panels? Inhabit. com is a niche site specializing in green living. They have a section called green gadgets, many of them gadgets to enhance the living space by conserving energy. Examples here include stories about Solar-powered ConnecTables that charge devices in public places, robots that clean the house, smart smoke detectors in the works, a designer that transformed a bike into a pedalpowered elevator and patio furniture that was used to create a bike-powered generator. Smart Homes Technology has ushered in a new era of home design. With it comes a trend (mostly for rich people) to build smart homes. This means that the technology is part of the home and serves to make tasks easier and enhance the living experience for the dweller. Automation makes possible the interconnectivity of devices that control appliances, security, media and other functions within the home. The dweller can manipulate the system to automate tasks for them. Remember the Jetsons? Augmented Reality Remember on Star Trek, when they entered the simula-

In fact, one theory among a former NASA scientist is that the entire universe could very well be our future selves programming code to create the world we live in. Interestingly, matter, when broke down small enough, act quite like pixels do on your computer. The exponential computer processing power capability growth actually confirms this possibility. WIth enough data, you could create an entire simulated universe or multiverse. Well, augmented reality is like that. Scientists are using data to create virtual worlds with simulated sights, smells and feel and wonders. Contour Crafting Contour crafting, a process that came out of the University of Southern California School of Engineering, is a robotic construction system. It’s also a disruptive technology that make some wonder how many jobs may be lost in the construction industry. It’s probably true that this may happen, but it may also fuel many other types of jobs as well. The process takes 3D printing to a whole new level, actually to the level of constructing structures like houses, warehouses, shops, even whole neighborhoods or complexes. It looks to be more efficient, cheaper and actually safer. It’s definitely faster. A whole structure of a few thousand square feet can be put up in a day’s time. It works with nozzles that lay a precise amount of concrete and other arms that perform tasks in construction. They are multi-configurable. The idea was take manufacturing processes and apply them to the very costly and dangerous field of construction. Contour crafting is what we are left with.
