Beautiful things come in small packages at Yummy Yummie Goodness Children’s Boutique (Y2G), which offers a unique variety of clothing (newborn-10), shoes, toys and accessories. Located in the quaint shopping district of Hastings-on-Hudson, Y2G is a place for children to develop and explore their individuality through fashion. “The store’s primary focus is to spotlight couture lines that encourage eccentricity and to provide a place for families to shop for high-quality brands,” says owner Maisha Teacher, mom of three terrific kids. Before opening Y2G she shopped in different locations “searching for anything that was creative and not the typical pink or blue. This proved to be an extremely difficult task.” All lines are hand-picked to enable children to look at clothing as art and their bodies as a blank canvas. This fall’s line of children’s designers includes Livie & Luca, Oil & Water, Mim-Pi, 4 Funky Flavours, Sierra Julian and Sweet Peanut, to name a few. Hours: Tuesday through Thursday, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday to 6 p.m., Sunday to 3 p.m. Call for holiday hours.

eter J. Riolo Real Estate represents a powerful force in homeownership and long-term customer relationships. For more than 75 years Riolo Real Estate has been serving the Rivertowns. During that time they have earned a reputation for integrity, service and getting the results people want. All of the sales associates live in the community and embody years of real estate experience and marketing know-how. They know the schools, the neighborhoods and the people. Many of them have been raised here and in turn have raised their children here. As founding members of Westchester Real Estate, Inc., the Riolo office has joined with other prominent Westchester firms to provide a network of local offices in locations in the county as well as New York City. Individually they thrive on their own, in part, because they are household names in their communities. Collectively, these independent companies use the power of pooled resources to offer the advantages of extensive advertising, training, relocation and networking services. In an era of large, impersonal real estate companies, Peter J. Riolo Real Estate’s oneon-one personal service, first-hand knowledge of the area, high-ranking sales record and countless years of experience ensure a smooth real estate experience.

Linda Angel, owner of Art Transcending Time, designs jewelry that is more than just an accessory to wear; it is a true work of art. She incorporates antique Italian micro mosaics with semi-precious stones strung on silk to create one-of-a-kind pieces. Her jewelry is crafted in a wide variety of colors, most typically in blues, greens and warm earthy tones. “I get inspired by each antique mosaic that I work with,” Linda says. Her custom-made necklaces are created by combining a sparkling antique chandelier crystal with a personal photo, often of ancestors. “I love making these memory pieces for my customers,” says Linda, adding that she enjoys hearing the personal stories and history some of her customers share while ordering their jewelry. “Each necklace represents a connection between the past and present.” Stop into Linda’s studio and boutique to see her at work and learn more about her “unique handmade jewelry transcending time.” Hours: Wednesday through Friday, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

t’s been 15 years since Michelle Mosca took over Visual Difference hair salon. During that time, Michelle and her staff have been an important part of their clients’ lives. “We’ve been through so many milestones with them, sharing good times and bad. We feel like we are part of the family,” Michelle says. While at the salon, you will probably run into a neighbor, friend or coworker and either catch up with the latest gossip or say a quick hello and then relax while your stylist, along with the rest of the staff, tend to your crowning glory (and parking meters!). Michelle attributes the salon’s success to the teamwork of her loyal staff and their continuing education, which keeps them current and up to date while also perfecting the classics. Their goal is to make their clients feel comfortable when they walk in and satisfied when they walk out. “Happy clients with happy hair are our best advertisement,” Michelle says. The salon’s clientele ranges from a girl getting her first bang trim to a visiting in-law. Some clients have come and gone — and many have come back again. You’re always welcome at Visual Difference. Hours: Monday from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday to 6 p.m., Thursday to 8 p.m.

Charmed — the name says it all! This charming little shop is Hastings’ gift-buying destination, as well as your best source for decorative touches to celebrate the many holidays and seasons throughout the year. When you walk into the store, it’s like you’re on vacation. Packed with interesting items, you lose yourself in the magic the store has to offer. Holiday-driven, it’s fun to pop in often to see the merchandise as it changes with the seasons. Certainly the biggest draw is the antique candy counter — chocolates and candy sold by the pound — all guaranteed to delight. That means baskets with sweet treats and goodie bags for all occasions. In addition to the candy and seasonal selections, there are kitchen accessories, cards, candles, bath and body products, party supplies, hostess gifts, jewelry and accessories. Charmed is next to Slices, so you can have a pizza there and then order a candy pizza from Charmed. Visit sliceshastings.com. Hours: Monday to Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Erica Leon, MS, RDN, CDN, CEDRD

People often say, “You are what you eat.” And indeed, our diet can contribute to medical problems like obesity, diabetes and heart disease. While fad diets seem like an easy solution, they do not work in the long run. Erica Leon, a registered dietitian, nutritionist and certified eating disorder specialist understands the link between healthful eating and your body. Her philosophy is one of balance and moderation in eating and exercise. Her “intuitive eating approach” supports children, teens and adults struggling with habits that can lead to weight gain, disordered eating or other health problems. Erica’s signature approach guides and encourages clients to respond positively to lifestyle changes — without deprivation — on the way to embracing health and wellness. Individual, group and family sessions can be arranged. Erica is currently offering a six-week “Healthy Habits” program for children and teens. A second program helps teenagers transition to college, focusing on making intelligent food choices, managing stress and learning to avoid the infamous “freshman 15.” For more information about Erica’s programs or one-on-one individualized consultations, call her now. Rivertown Cleaners may be small but it has “big-cleaner” capabilities — providing every kind of service that the other, less personal businesses do. But those cleaners are missing the care given by Rivertown Cleaners’ owner Anna Mocarska, who strives to make her customers happy and ensure their items are washed, cleaned and pressed perfectly each and every time. Eco-friendly, family-owned and -operated, Rivertown Cleaners is conveniently located right in the heart of Dobbs Ferry, where Anna lives and raises her children. ating healthier just got easier with the opening of Mix on Main Health Bar at 63 Main St. in Dobbs Ferry. Owner Vance Campbell, who is committed to healthful eating himself and enjoys running, worked in the restaurant business for six years before deciding to open his own health food restaurant. Mix on Main offers a variety of tasty options for nutrient-rich, good-for-you, dine-in or takeout lunches and dinner, and will also deliver. Diners can create their own salad with a green, leafy base and add toppings for a customized, fresh meal. Satisfying protein bowls come with a choice of quinoa or brown rice. Add chicken, steak, tofu, shrimp or grilled veggies, then a sauce: Asian sesame, barbecue, sweet chili, or wasabi for a savory finish. Juicing is part of many lifestyles these days, and Mix on Main offers juices and smoothies that are made from 100 percent organic fruit and vegetables — and absolutely no GMOs (genetically modified organisms). Customers can choose from a list of cleansing and energizing juices or build one from fresh ingredients. Salads, wraps, panini, soups and daily specials round out the menu. “Dobbs Ferry is a foodie town,” Campbell says, and he is happy to offer another option on the thriving restaurant scene with Mix on Main’s healthy fare. If Campbell doesn’t have what you want for your dietary needs, he’ll get it for you. “I don’t believe in the word no,” he says. “If I don’t have it now, I’ll have it for you tomorrow.” Hours: Monday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Don’t put off that will, power of attorney, or health care proxy any longer. Without a will or trust, New York State decides who receives your estate. Should you become incapacitated, a guardian may have to be appointed if you do not have a power of attorney, which involves an expensive court proceeding. Health care decisions may be made by doctors contrary to your wishes, if you do not have a health care proxy. Attorney Lawrence McGovern has dedicated more than 30 years to helping clients with these three important documents. For the vast majority of people, the process is uncomplicated and straightforward. Make an appointment for a consultation. Larry has represented individuals and organizations in both New York City and Westchester in a general civil practice, which, in addition to the drafting of wills, trusts, powers of attorney and health care proxies, also includes specializing in probate and administration of estates and trusts, including accountings; real estate purchases and sales; elder law; taxes; not-for-profit corporations and foundations. Larry has lived in Dobbs Ferry for 34 years, raising five children with his wife, Ginny. He is happy to meet with you in his Dobbs Ferry office, or in your home, for morning, afternoon, evening or weekend consultations.

Someone said that in the 22 years the Ciccone brothers, Tony and Phil, ran Ardsley Pizza, nearly everyone in Westchester had eaten a Ciccone brothers pie. And now, fans of Ardsley Pizza are welcoming the brothers’ latest incarnation, a totally remodeled storefront restaurant called Slyce — offering artisan pizzas, local craft beers, imported wines, and cosmopolitan entrées to complement the restaurant’s traditional New York-style, thin-crust pizza and classic Old World dishes. Same great owners, same traditions, new look and a few extra toppings. New on the menu now, to name just a few, are butterflied bone-in, center-cut veal chop and roast bone-in chicken, among other culinary innovations — plus creative, artisan pizzas made with goat cheese, clams, imported cheeses, veggies and other ingredients that showcase the chef’s imagination. Of course, classic chicken and veal Parm are always on the menu. Dine at Slyce for a true evening-out feeling. Prefer to eat home? Slyce delivers. Great food in a great atmosphere — your home or ours. Hours: Open seven days a week, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Welcoming, Old-World charm, and refined Tuscan recipes highlight the culinary experience at La Catena in Ardsley. Now in its fifth year, the restaurant has garnered praise from The New York Times and Westchester magazine for its ambiance and expert tableside presentation. Master chef/owner Emilio Delija is noted for his signature dish, pappardelle alla Emilio, prepared tableside using broad ribbons of homemade pasta with porcini, shiitake and oyster mushrooms and a shimmer of cream, tossed in a hollowed-out wheel of ParmigianoReggiano cheese and flamed with cognac. Enticing seafood favorites include branzino or honey-sweet Dover sole, expertly filleted in front of you. Fish, produce, meats and sauces — always prepared from scratch using the freshest seasonal ingredients and beautifully presented — are complemented by exquisite desserts, including white chocolate strawberry shortcake, zabaglione, and bananas flambé. The gracious wait staff adds warmth and elegance to an overall stellar dining experience for newcomers, as well as a league of regulars who choose La Catena time and again for its European graciousness, seasonal specialties, full bar and diverse wine list. With convenient access from the Saw Mill River Parkway, La Catena also provides a spacious room for private parties and expert catering for at-home celebrations. Hours: Open seven days a week. Lunch: Monday through Sunday, from noon to 3 p.m. Dinner: Sunday through Thursday, from 3 to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday to 11 p.m.

uddy’s Barking Lot Doggie Daycare just celebrated 10 years of making dogs really, really happy! And let’s face it, when your dog’s happy, you’re happy — so what could be better? “There’s a whole generation of dogs that grew up in the Rivertowns that have come here since they were puppies, and that’s beautiful to see,” say owners Eileen Fleming and Susan Ekaireb. Buddy’s offers full- or part-time daycare for doggies from four months, with all dogs pre-interviewed to ensure pack compatibility. With no crates, cages or kennels, Buddy’s features super-comfy couches, huge, communal indoor spaces and a spacious, secure, fenced-in yard in the woods behind its building. There’s outdoor recess three times a day (weather permitting), with dogs separated by size for optimal safety. Doggies are walked every 90 minutes (puppies every 60 minutes, helping with potty training). A professional dog trainer is here every day. Buddy’s Barking Lot’s staff is exceptional, says Eileen, singling out manager Liz Marsek. “Every customer knows Liz, who is here first thing in the morning and closes up at night. She’s incredibly important to us,” Eileen says. “We’re all very lucky to have such a loyal, happy staff.” At Buddy’s Barking Lot, “your dog will love it, and we’ll love your dog!” Call for an interview. Follow Buddy’s on Instagram and friend Buddy’s on Facebook. Hours: Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Closed Saturday and Sunday.

Anna Krosche

Howard Gorenfeld

It’s the call every mother dreads: “Your child has head lice.” No worries. Anna Albano-Krosche, the Lice Lady of Westchester, can come to the rescue 365 days a year, “because lice is always an emergency.” Anna is Westchester’s original head lice removal expert. “I’ve been in business since 1998, and I’ve treated over 10,000 heads,” says Anna. She is the area’s only lice removal specialist with a freestanding salon. She also makes house calls. Anna frequently travels to schools and camps to do lice checks and to give presentations on head lice prevention. “I’ve been through this with my own children and myself, and I relate 100 percent to everybody who comes in,” she says. A client’s head is examined under a magnification light, then is given a 20minute, all-natural enzyme-based shampoo. Nits are combed from the hair, then the hair is rinsed, blown dry and rechecked. Clients leave the salon with a homework sheet, including instructions on how to “delouse your house.”

In business since 1994, Howard Gorenfeld and Wired Ltd. continue to exceed the expectations of their clients throughout Westchester, New York City and beyond. Wired Ltd. provides design, sales and installation of multiroom audio systems, flatpanel TVs, large-screen projection systems, media rooms, outdoor audio systems, and streaming media services — including Netflix, Amazon, Pandora, Spotify and others. One of the latest innovations in home technology comes from Sonos, which makes an award-winning, state-of-the-art audio system that can provide music throughout the home. Having designed and installed hundreds of systems, Howard has earned the rank of master Sonos designer/installer. Howard works closely with his clients during the design phase of the project. He then delivers and meticulously installs the system. “Every system is unique and must be easy to use,” says Howard. “And every client receives individual attention.” Wired Ltd. works on existing homes and collaborates with builders and designers on new construction and renovations. With a true passion for his work, Howard returns every phone call, attends every meeting, and is on-site for every project. Hours: By appointment.

ew York School of Esthetics offers the New York State 600-hour esthetics course — which includes facials, makeup and waxing — and which leads to eligibility to sit for the state-board testing procedures. It is our mission to provide an exciting, well-planned curriculum for students, one that will put you ahead in this fast-growing industry. The function of the school is to provide a professional environment where the student learns the theory and principles (hands-on) in esthetics. We will prepare all students for their New York State esthetic written and practical board exams. The school offers more certifications in the undergraduate program than any other school of its kind. These certifications include microdermabrasion, chemical peel, body treatments and teeth whitening. New York School of Esthetics also offers advanced laser hair removal and advanced makeup. Graduates are prepared for entry-level positions that include working with plastic surgeons and skin care specialists. The school’s graduates are employed in dermatologists’ offices and day spas throughout Westchester, Rockland, Manhattan and surrounding areas. As one student said, “I learned so much compared to other schools of esthetics and they made us feel more like family rather than just friends! I graduated knowing that I am a professional with great knowledge in skin care!” New York School of Esthetics is fully accredited by National Accrediting Commission of Career Arts & Sciences, Inc., (NACCAS) and offers financial aid to those who qualify. We participate in the Pell Grant program, Direct Student Loans and Parent Plus Loans.

We see all types of patients: dogs, cats, birds, reptiles and “pocket” pets like ferrets, rabbits and rodents. Drs. Lester Sills and Zsach Ben Adi are seasoned practitioners with more than four decades of combined clinical and surgical experience. Their skills and professional ethics enable them to practice medicine efficiently and cost-effectively. We’re a friendly, small-animal practice offering concierge-like services tailored to individual needs and constraints. Petchester is a newly built, modern, fully equipped hospital built from the “pawprint” of an Italian restaurant. You will be comfortable as soon as you walk in the door, with separate waiting areas for dogs and cats/exotics. There’s an airy, open reception and waiting area with nostalgic animal photos, and our staff is equally open and friendly. We realize medicine is also an art and requires experienced professionals with strong clinical know-how who use their experience to make fast, life-and-death decisions while utilizing state-of-the-art equipment. On-site services include urgent care, complete pet pharmacy, clinical laboratory, digital radiography, ultrasound, modern surgical suite, animal dentistry, chemotherapy, medical boarding, and grooming. Ruffled Feathers Gourmet Rotisserie, the popular takeout spot, is now entering its 24th year, and its delicious prepared foods have become standard fare in most homes in and around Scarsdale. Owners Ken and George specialize in preparing healthy and low-fat foods using the best and freshest ingredients available. Besides the great rotisserie chickens, other items are available from the rotisserie, such as Long Island duck, Cornish game hens, fresh turkeys, and garlic and herb-crusted filet mignon. They also have oversized grilled chicken breast and skinless fried chicken, which is low in both cholesterol and fat but high in flavor. For those who choose not to have chicken, they offer many other dishes: grilled salmon, sole française, turkey chili, turkey burgers, baby back ribs and assorted pasta dishes are among the highlights. Other notable delicacies available at Ruffled Feathers include homemade coleslaw, kasha varnishkas (that would make grandma proud), rice pudding, mélange of roasted vegetables, purée of butternut squash, creamed spinach (it’s really creamless); cranberry, walnut and apple compote; solid white tuna with dried cranberries and apples; homemade soups and of course, their famous chopped chicken liver. Ruffled Feathers also offers holiday menus and catering service. Hours: Monday through Friday, from 10:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

rom personal insurance — life, health, long-term care, vehicle, homeowner’s and renter’s — to all forms of business insurance, including cybersecurity, the Plum Insurance Agency meets every need and reviews each client’s coverage on a yearly basis. If you and your current insurance provider don’t hold this kind of annual conversation, you’d be wise to contact Plum for a free-of-charge consultation. “Many new clients — homeowners as well as business owners — are coming in and requesting that we review their coverage,” says CEO/president Ellen Plum. “We do really meaningful work for all our clients by looking at what insurance they have and spending time talking with them about the coverage they actually need.” Particularly now, in this tight economy, it’s important to be sure one’s income is being spent wisely. Because purchasing insurance can be confusing, holding a conversation with a Plum agent about an insurance portfolio before recommendations are made can be a priceless addition to peace of mind. How much insurance is enough, and is it affordable? Also, if there’s a claim, can a knowledgeable, caring agent be reached quickly? There’s no anxiety with Plum, whose roots date back to 1949. Personal service is a hallmark of this three-generation, family-owned, independent agency. Plum’s agents work with many insurance companies, and as a result, rates are often lower than those found at much larger competitors, which can’t offer anything close to Plum’s comprehensive care. To see for yourself, stop in or make an appointment. Hours: Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday to 7 p.m. Evenings and weekends by appointment.

he Hoff-Barthelson Music School (HBMS) has been one of Westchester’s most cherished cultural resources for nearly eight decades, and has achieved national recognition as a premier community music school for its unsurpassed leadership in education, performance and outreach. At Hoff-Barthelson, students acquire skills leading to a lifelong enjoyment of music in a warm and nurturing setting. The school’s educational approach centers on quality individualized instruction, a broad, sequential musicianship training program, and a performance program that affords numerous opportunities for students to perform as soloists and in ensembles. The faculty is drawn from the nation’s most distinguished performers and educators in both classical and jazz studies. The school boasts one of the most fully equipped music technology labs in the country. Curriculum focuses on individualized instrumental and vocal instruction and offers sequential theory, ear training, composition and analysis classes. Older students can participate in choral and instrument ensembles, performances, workshops, master classes and outreach programs. The Orchestral Pyramid for middle and high school students culminates in an opportunity to audition for the prestigious senior high school Festival Orchestra, which has been deemed one of the best in the country by the New York State Council of the Arts. Preschool children begin their music education at HoffBarthelson with a full program of music, movement and recorder classes. Here they are helped and encouraged by experienced, nurturing teachers who strive to develop music skills and to encourage a love and appreciation of music. The HBMS Suzuki program — which features private instrumental lessons and group classes, a parent class, and musicianship classes — is the most comprehensive Suzuki program in Westchester. The Suzuki program has been further enhanced with Pre-Twinklers, through which preschoolers are introduced to violin studies and the joy of making music in a group setting. Concert performances at the school include guest appearances by world-renowned artists. Guest soloist for the Festival Orchestra Winter Concert on Dec. 14 at 7 p.m. will be Nancy Allen, harp. Hours: Classes and lessons: Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday to 5 p.m.

Jayne Ehrlich

Prior to founding Hometown Nannies+ in 1990, Jayne Ehrlich was a teacher, a counselor and a member of the screenwriter’s guild. As an educator and mother, Jayne knows that each family has very specific domestic needs. She only seeks out candidates who she herself would hire. Requirements for domestic applicants are stringent, screening is thorough, and each applicant meets with Jayne — usually more than once. Client families receive a comprehensive file on each domestic candidate and two interviews are advised. Over the past 27 years, Hometown Nannies+ has placed thousands of world-class baby nurses, nannies, governesses, housekeepers, couples, cooks, valets, household and estate managers, companions and cnas, personal assistants, and more. She also specializes in special-needs nannies. Although her client list is confidential, Jayne reveals that three of her first jobs were to find: party staff for the late Frank Sinatra; an upstairs maid for the late Miss (Anne) Bancroft; and an Italian-speaking, baseball-playing nanny for the family of a major movie star. “And that was just the beginning.” she notes. Jayne’s 27 years of recruiting experience, screening expertise, thoroughness, and boutique service have ensured successful staffing for the most discerning homes, both locally and globally.

he unexpected pairing of a P.H.D. with truck driving tickles the imagination. It’s not an economic downturn that ties the two together; it’s Steve Colucci’s delightful sense of humor paired with dedication to his work. This P.H.D. How do people take advantage of a man with a truck? How about free — yes, free — curbside pickup of scrap metals, appliances and steel items? How about low-cost yard cleanup? Fallen trees cut and removed? Or take away household items and clothing? Maybe you’re planning to sell your house. Call P.H.D. Drives Truck to clean up your property for great curb appeal. Here are some benefits to keep in mind about P.H.D. Drives Truck: • The company cares about the environment. Trust and Integrity in the Rivertowns Number One Realtor

oulihan Lawrence was founded in 1888 with a commitment to trust and integrity, which has been our hallmark for more than 100 years. Today, the company is the No. 1 leader in market share and remains the area’s largest independently owned Realtor with 26 offices and 1,200-plus agents serving Westchester, Putnam and Dutchess counties and our newest location in Greenwich, Connecticut. We pride ourselves in having the resources and network that a national company would have — our own inhouse marketing division, an award-winning relocation department, as well as our affiliation with Christie’s International Real Estate. We still, however, have been able to retain the personal touch of the local hometown Realtor, because not only are our offices staffed

by residents of the towns they serve, but each office is supported by a Westchester headquarters that can be immediately responsive to our local changing market. The Irvington office, combined with the Ardsley office — staffed with committed professionals — continues to be the dominant market-share leader in total sales volume in Ardsley, Dobbs Ferry, Hastings, Irvington, Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow. Put these two amazing groups together and you have an invincible and matchless team of 50 agents. We have all set the standards for excellence in customer service and will gladly accept the challenge to serve our neighbors during this ever-changing time. Please feel free to call upon any one of us and we will be vigilant in attending to your every need.
