n the age of online purveyors and discount merchandisers, high-quality men’s tailoring is all but gone — but not quite. Nigel’s, one of the newest and most welcome additions to downtown Hastings, has revived the concept of the well-dressed man — the look that immediately says, “This man knows fabric; this man understands fit; this man recognizes quality.” Presiding over Nigel’s is Ali Khatami, an alumnus of Pincus Brothers-Maxwell, one of the venerable names in men’s tailored clothing, and of HickeyFreeman, the American suit manufacturer. Now, with his own brand called “Nigel’s Drape,” modeled after Savile Row suits and other iconic English city and country garments, but with a casual American sensibility, Khatami is making the collection available at his own retail store in Hastings as well as through a wholesale division for top-of-the-line haberdashers across the country. At Nigel’s, the tailored man can purchase readymade or made-to-measure bespoke suits and outerwear, accented by curated accessories, including broadcloth shirts, cashmere sweaters made from the finest yarns, Italian-made jeans and trousers, bench-made shoes, and seven-fold silk ties and pocket squares. Womenswear, too. “Why shouldn’t a woman enjoy the luxury of suits and coats made from menswear cloth?” Khatami observes. “Why can’t a tailored woman bask in the elegance of the finest cashmere sweaters and accessories?” At Nigel’s, she can. “There is always a market for quality,” Khatami says. “There is a soul in well-made clothing.” Hours: Monday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

he New Choral Society, under the direction of Dr. John T. King, will begin its 24th year of presenting outstanding classical choral music concerts to audiences from Scarsdale and the surrounding communities. The all-auditioned 48-member chorus will perform masterworks by Händel, Schubert, Gounod, Purcell, Haydn and Durante, with an orchestra of outstanding New York musicians and internationally known soloists. The new season opens on Friday, Dec. 1, with an 8 p.m. performance of Händel’s “Messiah, Part I” and Durante’s “Magnificat.” The concert will take place at the New Choral Society’s home venue, the acoustically brilliant sanctuary of Hitchcock Presbyterian Church at 6 Greenacres Ave. in Scarsdale. Audiences at these superb choral concerts find the place and the performances a perfect inspirational blend. The season opener will be repeated on Sunday, Dec. 3, at 3 p.m. On Jan. 27, at 8 p.m., the orchestra will be showcased in “An Evening of Chamber Music,” featuring an eclectic program of instrumental ensembles in this intimate setting. On March 4, the chorus will present Gounod’s “St. Cecilia Mass” and Schubert’s Mass in G. To end the season, the program on April 29 will feature “Music for Royal Occasions,” with works by Händel, Haydn and Purcell. Anna Albano-Krosche, the Lice Lady of Westchester, can come to the rescue 365 days a year, “because lice is always an emergency.” Anna is Westchester’s original head lice removal expert. “I’ve been in business since 1998, and I’ve treated over 10,000 heads,” says Anna. Children in two Mount Vernon elementary schools are reaping the rewards of two enrichment programs in the After-School Academy, sponsored by Westchester Jewish Community Services (WJCS), one of the county’s largest human services agencies. Activities in the “Amazing Afternoons” program at the Edward Williams Elementary School, for grades 1 to 6, and the “Off the Street” program at the Hamilton Elementary School, for grades 2 through 6, begin with a healthy snack for the approximately 120 students in each program. The fun continues with music, books, sports, STEM learning, occasional field trips, and even homework assistance to help the children excel. The storybook hour, co-chaired by volunteers Sarah Kayle, Nina Ross and Cynthia Samwick, is just one of the quality activities popular with kids and their parents. The joy of story improves literacy, encourages discussion, and exposes young people to the world beyond their classrooms and neighborhoods. Assisting with the programs are trained high school students from Mount Vernon and Scarsdale, Westchester Reform Temple volunteers, neighborhood moms, and former students.
