vorite shade is a true chameleon. Steely grays look crisp and DUTTON elegant. Smoky grays LUDWIG are soft and romantic. Muddy grays are a tease, as they play at being greens or browns or lilacs. Go for subtle tonal variations expressed through richly textured layers, or exploit the drama of contrast through neutralbased color blocks (i.e. gray, white and black or gray, navy and beige). These combinations work beautifully for everyone and are anything but boring. For classic military looks — one of fall’s perennial passions — gray is the most modern interpretation.

et ready for the wild side — however tempered by a moody gray attitude. This season, fall fashion breaks the rules and follows a rebel’s yell; then it comes back purring and demure. Expect the unexpected, like feathers teasing out the softer side of leather and spikes getting in the face of conservative tweeds. Confused? You don’t have to be. We’ve navigated the catwalks and picked a dozen ways for you to stand out from the crowd — all very much on trend, supremely wearable and mutable enough to make your own.

Biker chic If there’s one element that defines the look of fall, it’s leather. The classic biker jacket is back in full force. However, even hardcore Harley Davidson styles have become lighter and more tailored than ever before. A proper fit, a supple hand, and gorgeous hardware are key to versatility. Invest in a jacket you love, and you’ll wear it with everything. There’s no better way to add chic style to jeans or give feminine dresses an unexpected edge. But why stop there? Leather is also driving the current obsession with skirts, pants and dresses — particularly when fashioned in unusual, colored or quilted leathers. Go for pieces

in bold, solid colors, with defined silhouettes and articulated stitching or metal hardware. Just remember to pair leather with softer coordinating separates to find your Zen. Contrast here brings the best balance of energy. A leather skirt and a leather bustier? Too much. But leather trousers and a mohair sweater? Just right! Gray skies Rainy days or sunshine, this season’s mood plays with a palette of subtle grays. Encompassing the range of all mixed cocktails of black and white, this season’s fa-

Ouch! Studs and spikes are the embellishment of the moment. Look for them everywhere — and we mean EVERYWHERE. From their origins in the world of street punk, their hard edge lends a distinctive bite to mainstream styles too. Expect to see pointy shards added to basic black, enhancing shoulders, cuffs and shoes. This season, they are also taking a supporting role in accessories like chokers, bracelets and handbags. Man killer? Yes. Lethal? No. To soften the look of spikes, some designers are interspersing these metal teeth and claws with chunky rhinestones, glittery sequins and other reflective adornments. Be as bold as you dare… just remember to stash a few adhesive bandages in your purse. Tee time Yes, it’s true. T-shirts with price tags of $350, or more, are flying off the shelves this season. A staple of casual dressing, the T-shirt has transcended itself and become a fashion icon. Fashionistas love vintage finds, and designers have listened. Look continued on page

Beauty & Fitness: Keep yourself looking in summer shape this fall

S

ummer was nice this year, but now it’s come to an end. Does that mean you’re going to get out of shape or that your hair or skin will no longer look its best? Let’s hope not! There could be two ways to look at this question, say a number of local experts, includBy ing Kim Holzmann-Krolick of Mary Corelab in Katonah. Her business offers what she calls the “only stu- Legrand dio in Westchester County to offer the innovative Lagree Fitness workout, fusing elements of Pilates, strength training and circuit training. It’s just one way to remain in shape all year-round. Holzmann-Krolick said her impression is that some clients are returning to her studio after a short summer break because “when their children go back to school they have more commitment and time for working out, while “others have too many other activities now that school is back in session. It depends on the person and her situation. Assuming that a person might be busier now than even this time last month “because kids are in school and you’re more active, you have to stay committed to exercise, Holzmann-Krolick said. “It might mean setting up a class you have to attend or finding a friend you’ll run with on Tuesday mornings at 6 a.m. And just because your kids are playing sports, “Just don’t stand on the soccer field sidelines; go for a quick jog, she said. “There are tons of ways to add exercise into your day, and you don’t necessarily have to work out for an hour. You could do 15 minutes of a high-energy interval routine and repeat the series a couple of times. The “biggest thing for fitness is having someone else you’re accountable to, Holz-

mann-Krolick said. “I’m training for a half Ironman and have a training buddy, if not for whom I might not train if I didn’t feel like running or working out. Located in Bronxville, Little Black Dress Personal Training, LLC, is an in-home personal training service for women in lower Westchester. Owner Anne Marie Costanzo brings all the necessary equipment, which can include free weights, resistance bands, Bosu balance trainer and other easily transportable equipment, and can work out with clients indoors or outdoors. “Summertime allows everyone to get out and be more active than during any other season, Costanzo said. “Many of my clients start taking on additional activities, like cycling, tennis, swimming and running. Since the fall holds plenty of 5k or 10k runs, half or full marathons, triathlons, etc., many clients start cross training for their particular event during the summer. With the increase in availability of fresh, local, organic fruits and veggies at local farmers markets, the ability to eat healthier and feel better about oneself is an added summertime bonus. Costanzo said the early autumn weather allows

throughout the metropolitan area, Gocke said. “I believe people are maintaining their fitness regimen 12 months of the year, he said. “Come Labor Day people stop playing outdoor tennis, so now it’s time to play indoors. It does seem to me that summer here for tennis players is Memorial Day to Labor Day. But for the truly active tennis player, the routine “doesn’t change that much with a new season. “The competitive nature of league play continues indoors now, whereas up until about five years ago it was predominantly in the summer, Gocke said. “What has developed is winter league play, with a lot of women who didn’t play an organized sport growing up now playing competitive sports. They’re competing at their ability levels and making social connections too. Allison Adamiak of Balance Day Spa in White Plains disputes the notion that women might look their best only in the summer. “However, summer is a time of year when most people are more active, she said. “There are a plethora of outdoor activities and an abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables to choose from. Generally, when people take better care of themselves, they do look better. That said, “summer can be an especially harsh season on the skin, Adamiak said. “Prolonged exposure to sun, chlorine and air conditioning can all take a visible toll. Skin that has been overwrought will always benefit from a good hydrating facial followed by a tailored home care regimen. Prevention is “always better than the cure, she said. “If you truly want to look your very best, then it is important to avoid abusing your skin in the first place. The skin cannot ‘bounce back’ indefinitely — it is unrealistic to believe that a spa treatment or even a medical procedure can continued on page

for lots of healthy activity. “However, once Halloween comes and goes, the holiday mode starts to quickly set in, and come December, many people are way too busy, swamped, stressed out and unfortunately don’t take the necessary time to exercise and are thus not taking care of themselves properly, she said. “Thus the influx of new members at your local gym comes Jan. 1. Calling herself a “big fan of interval training, Costanzo said it allows a person to focus on all the body parts. “So you’re getting a full body workout in a short amount of time. What’s great about this type of workout is that you can easily take it indoors when the weather turns cold. There’s no fancy equipment needed, just yourself. One of the best ways to stay in shape, no matter the season, “is to keep challenging the body, Costanzo said. “If you’ve been doing more endurance exercise over the summer, like running or swimming, a good challenge would then be to do shorter, interval workouts with weights. Or do the opposite: start running outdoors if you’ve been strength training all summer. If you have the proper gear and clothing, running in the cold can be exhilarating. But if you’re dead set against being outdoors in the cold, that’s okay, you can still change it up by doing yoga or Pilates, which can stretch and strengthen the core. Flexibility is one thing I see that many women lack. Changing up your mode of exercise is important in being able to give your body everything it needs to be at its best. Don’t be afraid to try new things and to mix it up. Long Ridge Swim and Tennis is a seasonal club located in North Stamford, Conn. Jeff Gocke, representing the owners of the property, said he doesn’t think people only look their best in the summer, particularly if they continuing exercising during the off season. While Long Ridge Swim and Tennis does not have indoor tennis or swim facilities, there are a number of options available

Fall cozies up to leather

R

unway fashion is a runaway hit this season with leather pieces that can take you from day to night. Leather perfectly transitions from fall to winter, but it can also be worn just about year-round. A little leather mini with sandals in summer evolves into fall worn over leggings with By over-the-knee boots. Or leather shorts worn Laurie with tights. Definitely hot looks this fall! Leather makes its debut this season in new Sullivan and exciting fabrications, colors and styles — exciting news for retailers and shoppers alike! In addition to pieces in all leather, there’s also pleather, leather’s look-alike sister, for a whole lot less. There are leather and pleather tops accented with peplums, another big look this season. You’ll find leather trim here, there and everywhere on sweaters, dresses, pants, jackets and more. Mixing it up According to Robin Mizrahi, co-owner of Pamela Robbins in Scarsdale, what’s new and exciting about leather this fall is “it’s acceptable and not a luxury. There’s more of it and everyone is on the bandwagon.” She said it’s also about the colors and mixing it with other fabrics. “We’re big fans of leather,” she said. In some respects Mizrahi said that although leather’s been around in seasons past, with leatherwear from year to year “it’s like going to a museum … and noticing something new each time you go.” The store, known for its cutting edge fashion and discovering new and up-and-coming designers, is showing what they call leather “inside wear.” That includes leather pants not worn “like you’re a cat burglar, [but] classic and a little slick.” Mizrahi said that leather jackets have always been an acceptable way of wearing leather. This year the perennial motorcycle jacket is back, plus collarless leather jackets which can be worn indoors or out and their popular puffy nylon jackets have been fabricated in leather for fall. And one of Mizrahi’s faves is a jacket made of “the finest lamb.” Leather is everywhere this season, including pieces that Mizrahi said have quilting, a la Chanel quilting. One of their more unique pieces is a leather romper, designed to wear with a top underneath, which Mizrahi likened to a typical English romper. “We have a lot of fine looking dresses that don’t read like it’s leather from afar, dresses with sexy suede, color blocking,” Mizrahi said. “We’re really about pretty and feminine in the shop.” This fashion maven wears leather leggings year-round. In summer she pairs them with a linen jacket. The store continued on page

It could be, clockwise from top left, a leather panel dress and gloves from O2 @ Outerluxe in Larchmont, mini skirts from Pamela Robins in Scarsdale, a jacket from Pamela Robins, a blazer with a leather collar from Outerluxe, a Jordan Louis ensemble from Outerluxe or a variety of pants options from Pamela Robins.

for reproductions of iconic logos, political campaigns or standout concerts — all realized in soft, washed cotton. To up the ante, why not embellish your new tee with safety pins, lace overlays or creatively sliced sections. It’s a perfect match for this season’s love affair with distressed, torn jeans. Deconstructed denim Everything old is new again — denim included. In addition to tailored designer jeans, distressed jeans have risen to the top of this year’s fashion trends. Rips, tears, holes, frayed edges, dangling seams, graffiti writing. Anything goes. The look is all about deconstruction and confidence. With enough attitude, distressed jeans transcend their sloppiness and look deliberate. The look says, “I’m confident and don’t need perfection to look good. Even in these ‘old jeans,’ I know how to pull it together. I don’t need your approval.” What could be sexier that that? For novices, keep the rest of your look neat when wearing torn jeans. A sleek tank top and a jacket with men’s tailoring are good choices; or if you go for a T-shirt, tuck it in. Complete the look with a ponytail or loose, messy curls — or anything that looks effortless. Pattern repeat As a balance to the season’s dominant solids, predominantly gray and black, designers have also embraced repetitive graphic patterns. Tight geometric repeats in retrained color combinations are chic and bold. Go for dresses to avoid adding additional garments, which may be a distraction. Bold jewelry and bags — whose shapes play off the particular geometry of the print — finish the look with style. Pantsuits are another option, albeit a trickier choice. To avoid the wallpaper look of a head-to-toe pattern, choose pantsuits with interesting construction details or distinct tailoring. This way, the overall pattern can read as a “solid” background, and the details can catch the eye instead. Country house Houndstooth, tweed, tartan and plaid — oh my! Fashion is really fickle. Just when you thought you could be perfectly happy living fearless adventures in an orange leather skirt, along comes a conservative Brit to steal your heart — and bring you back to reality. In addition to the crazy leather minis and ripped jeans in your closet this season, be sure to make space for a few classic pieces. Channel the spirit of the English countryside or an Ivy League campus in the 1940s with prints and silhouettes borrowed from these settings. The silhouettes of men’s suiting pair well with these fabrics. Look for wide-legged pants, cuffed trousers, vests and pantsuits, as well as more overt feminine interpretations, such as Aline skirts and jumpers. Be as conservative as you want with this look, yet add at least one touch

of irony or funk. Try white shirts, nubby sweaters, riding boots, tights, alligator belts, leather clutches… and a gold tone pocket watch if you can find one. For a funkier spin, mix up the look with something from the wild side — such as a leather cuff, fishnet tights or peek-a-boo lace. Emerald city Is the grass really greener on the other side of the fashion fence? This season offers a lot of opportunities to explore that question because green is this year’s “it” color. Encompassing a range of shades from emerald to lime, moss to celery, this is the year to go green. Green adds fresh excitement to formal dresses, jackets, skirts and coats. However, even a pair of green tights or a green scarf will add an elfish touch to your current look. Because of green’s association with nature, look for pieces that play up organic textures — silk like smooth leaves, velvet like rich moss, wool suiting like a deep forest. Peplum rally This season’s styles present another opportunity to embrace the peplum. Supremely feminine, peplums are like body sculpting on a hanger. Their fit and flare silhouettes show off girly curves if you’re lucky enough to have that perfect bust-to-waist-to-hip ratio. However, even if you don’t, no problem! While sometimes awkward looking on hangers, peplums are like figure magicians. Peplums create the illusion of tiny waists, no matter your size. They also add hippy volume to boyish figures. Proportion and texture are key. Large or stiff peplums command drama. Like beautiful butterflies, they steal any show. However, for every day wear, lightweight and loose peplums are a perfect compromise. They capture the theme with just a flutter. Winter white Forget the old rule about white. In your mother’s era, it was a major faux pas to wear summer’s favorite neutral after Labor Day. However, in today’s age of instant gratification, we wait for nothing — fashion included. White jeans, cream sweaters and ecru suede skirts are as beautiful in fall as are the innocent white frocks of summer. To command this winter white look, skip diaphanous, gauzy flights of fancy, and instead choose heavier-weight textiles appropriate for the season’s change in temperature. Chunky jewelry, thick leather belts and brown boots take the look one step further and firmly ground it in the right season. Your palette of inspiration is the tone of cappuccino cream sprinkled with cinnamon and nutmeg. Not that we’re saying you have to match your coffee... Lush layers Layers have always been a successful way to navigate uncertain temperatures as the seasons change. This fall, designers are exploiting the intriguing sensuality provided by multitextured layers. Creativity reigns, and everything goes, so

make this trend your own. Explore monochromatic, tonal fantasies in pairings of wool gabardine, gauzy sheers, lightweight knits, lace and fur. Cutouts and transparent panels add intrigue. Accents that reflect light (such as stones, metallic threads and metallic accents) enhance depth. To get the most out of this look, compose layers as an artist would design a collage. Be attentive to volume and movement. Give yourself some air. The uppermost layer of the outfit should seem to dance as you walk.

Jungle fever Gotta love it. Maybe we’re subliminally looking for that Tarzan fantasy, but whatever the reason, animal prints will never go out of style. This year’s darling is the sleek and powerful leopard. Play up these feline spots to let them roar, or tone them down to a quiet purr. No matter how you wear them, leopard prints are hot. Like neutrals, they marry well with a variety of accent colors — red, navy blue and brown are classics. However, for added freshness and fun, look for colorful interpretations in bright colors. Just remember, a little goes a long way. This is generally a look for separates, rather than head-to-toe ensembles. Unless, of course, you’re Cat Woman. In that case, meow.

Accessory explosion: Handbags,

hats, jewelry and coats ignite season

ccessories are the darlings of fashion. They can elevate an outfit, change its mood or add an unexpected twist. Accessories are your way to make fashion your own. This season is resplendent with options — play with hats, shoes and jewelry for edgy drama, chic statements and cool confidence. But most of all, have fun. If you need inspiration, here’s a top 10 trends list to get you started: Ooh-la-la coats Get noticed — coming or goBy ing. Statement-making outwear is TRACI the first thing they’ll see. Colored leathers, oversized parkas, fur (real DUTTON or faux) and feathers are adding LUDWIG interest and intrigue to coats and jackets of all lengths and silhouettes. Just remember, when your coat is the shining jewel, keep everything else simple. Think of a fashionable coat as part of your outfit. Wear it like a piece of jewelry. You want the play between coat and clothing to create the overall look. Nothing should seem to be a careless afterthought. Coordinate colors and be cognizant of length. You never want the hem of your dress to dangle lower than the edge of your coat. Invest in a duster instead. Likewise, you don’t want the beautiful lines of long legs, a short skirt and supple boots to disappear beneath the volume of a long, heavy coat. Go for a cropped leather jacket or a short peacoat instead.

colors are fantastically bold interpretations of the trend. Reminiscent of the quick work of nighttime’s “writers,” or clandestine spray paint artists, this trend is the perfect mixture of high and low art. Decorated Converse sneakers and Doc Martens ankle boots are excellent examples. Just be careful not to blend in with any downtown walls.

cinators are also popular. Choose a hat like any other accessory. Its proportion, form and color should work to deliberately enhance the entire look. However, anything too matchy-matchy can sometimes look contrived. For example, instead of coordinating hat and coat, pair the hat with the outfit beneath the coat instead. It’s decidedly more modern and playful. Gothic revival Fashion’s current preoccupation with metal hardware is one of the strongest influences on accessories this season. Look for shoes, handbags and jewelry (predominantly in black) punctuated by spikes, studs and heavy chains. Chain link bracelets and belts are also popular but they can be heavy, so be aware of comfortable proportions. Skull motifs and sculptural skeleton jewelry are also shaking up conventions of high fashion. Just make sure the Gothic influence is balanced by more serious, elegant elements to prevent looking like a ’90s redux. Take a risk: embrace the trend with a leather clutch bearing a chunky skull closure, for example. There’s no better way to transform expected into edgy, conservative into cool. Street smart Graffiti has left the landscape of urban bridges and subway cars to become wearable art. Look for colorful tags, messages, related texts and symbols dripping across shoes, scarves and handbags. Bright, in-your-face, mural-inspired lines and

Hands on The next time you’re at a party, you might not have to worry about what to do with two free hands. The solution might just be found in fall’s latest accessory trend. The clutch is the handbag of the moment — and it’s not just for evening anymore. Fall runway shows were parades of beautifully dressed girls, all vying for one honor, to see who was carrying the best clutch. Lucky for practical purposes, yesteryear’s miniscule clutches have expanded — literally — to include all shapes and sizes. They’re no longer tiny enough for just an ID, a credit card and lipstick. Now, they can accommodate a full spectrum of everyday practicalities, while still maintaining their certain je ne sais quoi. History lesson Demure chain and pendants are so passé. Instead, thick, textural chokers and wide metallic ribbons around the neck are in. Tribal and futuristic influences are hot. Look for woven fibers, interspersed with handmade beads, natural coconut shell, petrified bark and polished minerals. In contrast to this homage to the past, jewelry designers are also looking, with optimism, to the future. Broad collars of polished metal are sleek and reflect light beautifully. Chokers are statement-making jewelry. They radiate color and texture — and are the perfect vehicle to energize a simple, monotone outfit. broken strap or a popped button? Now fashion’s nursemaid has taken center stage. Like divas, safety pins are everywhere. This season, clothing designers are using them to decorate everything from T-shirts and jeans to vests and fringed skirts. Likewise, accessory designers have repurposed them into interesting jewelry and belts. Look for them especially in the construction of belts, bracelets and earrings. The best examples are not the most obvious. Because of the predominance of this trend, it’s also a lucky time for us, if a strap happens to break. Mom would be proud. Goldilocks Goldilocks has gotten an upgrade. Delicate blonde has become screaming yellow or luminous gold. Hair is the next frontier in fashion. Brightly colored hair accents are the next accessory. Faux mohawks, feathers, weaves and semipermanent color creams offer a variety of ways to decorate your hair with hues from the rainbow. Manic Panic is a brand of color cream that is easy to use and washes out after a few shampoos. Like a chameleon, change your hair according to your mood. It’s not just about what you wear, but who you are. Suspended animation Everything old is new again. Dive into a late ’80s flashback with suspenders. Just make sure to wear them 21st Century-style. Suspenders are more than just “Flash Dance.” Clip suspenders to a pair of ripped boyfriend jeans; throw on a suit jacket, and you’ve just upped the sex appeal of those old Levi’s. Or, for added elegance, button suspenders onto a pairing of houndstooth trousers and a crisp, white shirt. You’ll be surprised at how versatile they are. They add color. They add compositional line. They add irony and gusto. They also provide a place to pile on the safety pins.

is selling leather leggings with slim bottoms. “Some don’t even have waistbands — you just slide them on and some have back seams like old-fashioned stockings that are very flattering,” Mizrahi explained. Although Pamela Robbins “has been about neutral colors” and is carrying nude leather, new this year are “all kinds of browns, plums, wine colors, blues, navies — it’s like having the channel switch to HD. It’s a departure.” “Leather is much more out there this year. More people are wearing it,” said Mizrahi. The store is carrying tops with leather, silk with leather, T-shirts with leather sleeves, which makes them more affordable. And what is Mizrahi’s “must have” for fall? “One of our neat little lambskin jackets,” she enthused. “You can leave it on indoors or [wear] it over something.” But leather pants are also a “must” this season. For Mizrahi, she said it was hard to choose a single piece. “You put leather on, it melts on you,” she said. “It’s not hard anymore.” Back and better than ever Buyer Lori Land of Churchill’s in Mount Kisco said the leather trend continues this fall, but it’s different than in seasons past. “There’s more of it this year and it doesn’t seem like the trend is going away. The pieces are timeless and add value to your wardrobe. They’ve become staples in a woman’s closet,” Land said. “Every client in our store has bought a great leather jacket, vest or pants, especially with layering being so huge [this year].” Land said they’ve been selling fall clothes since July, including fitted leather jackets, a lot of sweaters with leather detail — leather piping, leather jeans with five pockets with zippers, pull-up leggings with Lycra that shape to you and mold to the body. She explained that designers are using leather accents as a way to add detail to the clothing, including leather trim on shoulders and elbow patches. They’ve paired a studded motorcycle jacket over cocktail dresses — a little funky and unexpected. Designers are using leather accents as a way to add detail to their clothing. Churchill’s offers leather and wool pieces and cashmere sweaters with leather trim. There are even leather accessories like leather cuffs with real diamond embellishments and a wrap bracelet that can be worn with anything with a diamond pendant, which can be taken off. The high-end designers are trying to bring down the cost by using leather, with prices that can range from $800-$1,000, depending on how many diamonds are being used. Land said a leather vest or motorcycle jacket vest “pops an outfit, whether it’s a simple dress — it gives it a little more edge.” Women are also wearing leather jackets instead of blazers. The store even offers fur handbags trimmed in leather. A luxurious leather anorak lined in fur is definitely worth a second look. Land said that if women want to invest in something leather for their wardrobes, she suggests buying a great leather jacket to wear indoors or out that transitions from day to night — a leather jacket that can be worn over jeans, dresses, etc. Land said they start their clients off that way: “Everyone can wear a great leather jacket.” Leather everywhere Elaine Andriotis, co-owner of Beginnings in Scarsdale and Armonk, said every single piece has leather. She said every company has incorporated leather on jeans, blouses, T-shirts with leather sleeves, dresses, sweaters, cashmere sweaters with leather trim. “You can wear it to black tie [events],” she said. “In the 33 years I’m in business I’ve never seen it like this.” Beginnings, known for its up-to-the-minute fashion, has shirts that are all leather (some have inserts of knit to make it fit better), pants and jeans. 100 percent correct or erase long-term abuse of the body.” Balance Day Spa offers a full range of esthetics services, including facials, waxing, aromatherapy, bronzing, makeup application, tinting and ear candling. “Our Quench facial is always a great choice for severely dehydrated skin,” Adamiak said, adding that the time of year “has very little to do with looking good. Having a tan will not necessarily make your skin look great. Regardless of a woman’s age, healthy skin is good-looking skin. If you take the time to take care of yourself and your skin, then you will always look your best.” Located in Scarsdale, Salon 421 opened in Jan-

uary 2012. Co-owner with Madaline Bruno, stylist Robert Doherty said that women tend to do more outdoor activities during summer with its longer days and warmer weather. In doing so, skin is tanned and exudes a summer glow. Hair, on the other hand, may have taken on too much sun over the summer, so a treatment such as Brazilian keratin, which lasts from four to six months, will “replenish the hair with keratin, something we are naturally born with,” Doherty said. “In doing so, this creates shine and depletes frizz.” Keeping one’s hair looking its best is “pretty simple, actually,” Doherty said. “By adding multitonal highlights and other hues, you can keep the sun-kissed look year-round. Because our natural color has many different tones when the sun hits it, it gives natural tones. This multitonal highlighting effect creates a most-natural appearance, as if sun-kissed.”

When asked if there is a point in the year when a woman’s hair color and style shouldn’t still look as if it’s the middle of summer, Doherty said he believes “color should reflect the season. But everyone has her own opinion. Sometimes a subtle change is appropriate, but doesn’t have to be extreme. As long as both color and cut accentuate beauty and confidence, anything is possible.” As a hair care professional with more than 21 years of experience, Doherty said he lives by one rule: “A woman should do what she feels most comfortable with when it comes to her beauty regimen. If she loves the look of sun-kissed blond hair, then she should keep it year-round. However, I do recommend to my clients to try new shades with seasons, especially as their skin tones change with the change of weather. Women are often surprised how a few highlights can change their overall look from season to season.”

cal wool with a leather stripe going down the sides instead of the traditional satin that puts a new spin on an old favorite. For those who don’t want to wear real leather, the store carries pleather. “You would never know it wasn’t leather,” Andriotis said. “We have a lot of pleather because [some] people don’t want to wear it and it’s also less expensive.” Everything in leather is selling, according to Andriotis. “Since it was shown on the runway, every vendor wants it.” Beginnings’ selection is wide and varied with leather and leathertrimmed clothing. That includes everything from a plaid flannel shirt trimmed in leather to

denims coated with leather, which are also being shown for men and women in the Armonk store. “It looks like leather,” she said. “Last year it may have been in black and this year it’s color.” Andriotis said she was already seeing it in the city at the end of summer. “Wine is a very huge color for fall as well as gray and black,” Andriotis explained. Beginnings’ customers are buying dresses, silk blouses and tops with leather trim and some with leather sleeves or necklines with leather trim. Plus leather vests, blazers, pants, shirts, dresses and jackets. Andriotis said leather leggings are hot “big time” this year. And of course leather bomber jackets, biker jackets and western jackets. “You’re not wrong in whatever you wear,” Andriotis said.

This trendy shop also has leather wrap bracelets and leather bangles. Andriotis’s favorite pieces include leather jeans, a leather jacket, leather vest and a sweater with leather arms. And her advice on what to buy if you were buying only one piece of leather? Leather pants, of course! All chic, all hot At 02 @ Outerluxe in Larchmont, co-owner Helen Barlow agrees that a leather something is the “must-have” for fall. When asked what’s hot for fall, she said, “Honestly everything that has leather, every piece that has been fabricated, whether biker jackets, dresses with leather panels, sweaters trimmed in leather, leather elbow patches.” She added, “The look from my perspective, the hottest looks are chiffon

blouses with leather trim. Working it in panels is a much more powerful way of using leather.” There’s also dresses with faux leather in front and jersey in back, faux leather leggings with ponte, a very stretchy comfy fabric with more structure than jersey. Faux leather, aka pleather, lowers the price point, too. Barlow noted that there’s a lot of pleather. “There’s something for everyone; leather and pleather have become interchangeable. A lot of collections are showing leggings that offer a lot of different options, every style and every price point,” she said. “You can pull looks from the runway to make it your own style. In the suburbs people aren’t going to wear it exactly the same way as what you see on the runway.” Take a tunic look, a lengthened top over leather pants or layered short over long. “There are a lot of different looks out there with leather leggings — looks that we grew up with, with a twist,” Barlow enthused. “It’s very exciting. There are always seasons where you’re not.” Barlow added, “There’s nothing easier to wear than black leather,” but she’s also seeing some jewel colors, wine and taupe that she thinks are great colors to mate with black. There are black with browns and navy, even a gray pullover with leather cuffs. Zippers are another strong element in many pieces this season. 02 @ Outerluxe even has French leather shorts which are “great over leggings” and worn with a slouchy sweater and a boot. The store sells a limited number of shoes and boots. “I’m very particular. I usually just bring in one designer,” Barlow explained, noting that the emphasis is on cropped and high boots. When wearing leather jeans she would accessorize with a cropped boot. The store, which at one time only sold outerwear, very quickly evolved and can now outfit you just about from head to toe, including denim, accessories and scarves. They still carry their own Bespoke shearlings, as well as other fur accessories. “We help customers put together pieces to create a look,” Barlow said. “We even have customers bring in their own merchandise for us to create a look.” There are blazers with leather collars, biker jackets with a capelet in back — a little cape across the back like a trench in taupe or black — dresses that are color blocked in leather; pleather and leather pants and skinny pants. The store sells sportswear and eveningwear, too. “We don’t sell traditional wear,” Barlow said. “We bring emerging designers in who don’t have a strong presence in the U.S., but are recognized elsewhere. You have to separate yourself from what the mall offers.” And her advice on what to buy in leather this season? “For me it’s definitely a toss-up between the leather biker jacket or a leather legging,” Barlow said. “Either way it’s a great starting point for building a wardrobe. Both are important pieces. I hate to choose.”
