Mortarboards rain down on the graduates.

With firm foundations, grads embrace upcoming changes BY EVAN FALLOR rdsley High School held its 97th commencement June 19 on what turned out to be a resplendent evening for the class of 2013. family and friends filled the bleachers and outer edge of the high school football field to witness one of the milestones in the lives of these proud young adults. murmurs and cheers from the crowd filled the air as the 177 graduates made their way from inside the school to the field as pictures snapped and cameras flashed. after renditions of “pomp and circumstance” by the school band and orchestra, and the pledge of allegiance and “StarSpangled Banner” by the Select chorus, senior class president alexandra Berg and vice president thomas foley took the podium to address classmates at their farewell assembly. the two reminisced about their own friendship, which began in kindergarten and reflected the many bonds shared by

peers in a tight-knit school community such as ardsley’s. foley, who offered assurance that the class of 2013 was “more than just a group of pretty faces,” suggested that graduation is “perhaps the end of the beginning.” Senior emily Blumenthal, along with the Select Senior chorus, performed a piece she wrote for the occasion, “graduation Song,” which includes the lyric “i never thought goodbye would be this hard to say.” Salutatorian Kelly goo began her address with the declaration that “ardsley sucks,” but then quickly reconsidered, and conceded that “in fact, ardsley does not suck.” after voicing the complaint common to most ardsley High School students — the lack of fun to be had in such a small village — goo let it be known that for the class of 2013, that issue was about to change. “finally,” she said, “we can emerge into the world — whatever that is.” Valedictorian allison Wishner admitted her reluctance to face this looming transformation. “i like things just as they are right now,” Wishner said in her address. “change really

is one of my biggest fears in the world.” While also revealing her apprehension about spiders, Wishner’s message was to concentrate on the present, rather than the past and future. this, she said, would assure that no one would miss the upcoming journey. “Because of you,” Wishner told her classmates, “i know i am ready for the challenge that lies ahead.” principal James Haubner echoed this notion during his closing remarks and encouraged his pupils to face this test head-on. “it is time to be courageous,” Haubner said. “You will begin to define who you really are.” Haubner stressed the importance of first impressions, but also last impressions — in this case, from the first day of high school orientation four years ago to the ceremony at hand. Haubner also recognized the students who received academic and athletic awards at a ceremony on monday, June 17. He singled out Hee Suk Kim, who painted a mural at the school for his end-of-the-year internship. Kim won an award sponsored by riverarts. forty-five graduates received senior

athletic awards, more than any other grade in the school’s history. then came the moment that every beaming parent and anxious student had anticipated for four years. School board president Joanne Sold certified that the students had completed their graduation requirements. one by one the seniors, from candace abellard to david Zeiger, made their way to the stage dressed in gold and blue — the school colors — and received their diplomas. Later, as the graduates relinquished their caps to the sky, there was a feeling that the sky was indeed the limit for this group of students. during her speech, Lauren allan, superintendent of the ardsley School district, wished the graduates the “wings of a great eagle” with the “roots of a mighty oak.” She also advised students to make their mark in the future, but not to forget their past. “find what you love and simply go for it,” allan said. “But i hope your roots have been watered deep within the ardsley soil.” 

DoBBs FerrY high sChooL Grads urged to pursue their passions, not perfection BY JULIAN CALDWELL

t

he dobbs ferry High School class of 2013 celebrated their accomplishment on a beautiful evening, June 22, at Waterfront park. the first speech came from departing Board of education president Jeffrey o’donnell, who joined the board 15 years ago, when some of the graduates were starting kindergarten at Springhurst elementary School. “passion,” o’donnell said was the theme of his speech. “You need to find yours.” He shared that it took him 22 years and eight colleges to discover his passion for nursing. He suggested that the new graduates try out electives in college and volunteer to figure out what they love to do. “it may take you awhile to find that passion,” he said. “But when you do, follow it. enjoy it.” principal John falino, who knew the class of 2013 for just two years, stated how much the students impressed him since he joined the district in 2012. State champion athletes, actors, musicians and volunteers who helped victims of Hurricane Sandy and the Sandy Hook school shooting were among those he was proud to see graduate. While the students had answered the challenge of finishing high school, he said there was a big question looming on the other side. “What now?” falino asked. “it’s a heavy responsibility to create your own path.” He encouraged the students to embrace, not fear, the uncertainty and struggles ahead. “With each trial comes discovery and with each failure comes success,” falino said. “now go out and live your own ‘What now’.” Salutatorian Sarah Koenigsberg was honest about how she felt as a young adult, almost out of high school, with the responsibility of giving her peers an uplifting speech. “i don’t pretend to have any insight on how you should live your life,” Koenigsberg said. She admitted that her speech was far from perfect, and that’s how she wanted it to be. “from what i can tell, nothing can be perfect, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be really great,” she said. “if you hold people to an impossible standard you might isolate yourself. if you hold yourself to an impossible standard, you might disappoint yourself.” the crowd laughed throughout Koenigsberg’s speech, from the beginning, when she described herself as one of the most awkward students in the class, to quips about teachers she and some of her fellow graduates had in elementary school. Koenigsberg, who starts at middlebury college in the fall, ended with an appreciation of her classmates, but not because they were perfect. “thank you for being there and being you,” she said. continuing with the theme of imperfection, Schools Superintendent Lisa Brady confessed that she had forgotten her speech at home, but was able to laugh it off and use her cellphone to read margaret Wheatley’s poem “Willing to Be disturbed,” which served as the inspiration for her remarks. Like falino, Brady encouraged the stu-

dents to embrace challenges because in the future they’d likely face more questions than answers. “no one person or perspective can give us the answers we need to the problems of today,” Brady said. “We have to be willing to admit that we’re not capable of figuring things out alone.” Valedictorian rebecca Wiersma, who is headed to carleton college in the fall, said it felt like she was waiting her whole life for high school graduation. While she celebrated the accomplishment, she knew there would be pressure to succeed even more in the future. “pressure to win oscars and a presiden-

tial election or two,” Wiersma said, drawing laughs from the crowd. the future science major delved into the scale of the stars and galaxies to show the daunting size of the universe the students were expected to impact. “and that’s just the known universe,” she said. “i’m supposed to change that? i’m just trying to keep my room clean.” Wiersma then went on to tell the students that it was important to not put too much pressure on themselves to be perfect. “Strive not to be a success, but rather to be of value,” she said, quoting albert einstein. She shared an embarrassing story about her fellow seniors from the mac field day

competition, when someone tripped, causing most of the class of 2013 to fall over while doing its rallying run to center court of the high school gymnasium. Seconds before the debacle, Wiersma continued, the class organized to let a developmentally-disabled student run out first and participate without danger of getting hurt. the compassion they showed that student was more powerful than the fall. “When you do something you’re passionate about, failure becomes irrelevant,” Wiersma said. the last speaker of the ceremony was the school district’s director of curriculum, douglas Berry, who was the principal at Springhurst in 2006, when many of the graduating seniors had they’re “Stepping up” ceremony from elementary school to middle school. now he was speaking at another one of their graduations. “While you may be leaving dobbs ferry High School as individuals, you will forever be a part of something bigger,” Berry said. He read lyrics from the song “We are one,” which the students sang during the “Stepping up” ceremony seven years ago. “from this day forward, keep that song in your heart,” he said. then falino began the presentation of the diplomas to the 105 graduates. after receiving their diplomas, the class of 2013 returned to their seats for falino to announce them as high school graduates for the first time. they then flung their caps into the air with the backdrop of the sun setting over the Hudson river. 

oldly facing the sun, long hair and dangly earrings shining, ariana ray urged fellow members of the class of 2013 to remember their roots and cherish the memories they made at Hastings High School. in her address as salutatorian, she talked about her ancestors from india who were forced to flee the country during the partition, taking with them only what they could carry on their backs. “i wondered, often, as a child, what exactly they could have taken that would have compensated for the enormity of their loss,” she said. “i realize now that what they carried does not matter. rather, it is the memories of their home, their roots, and their history that give the greatest strength.” the 117 graduates, who in kind were not allowed to carry anything at the school’s 105th commencement ceremony, only what they could shove into their pockets, received their diplomas at reynolds field on thursday, June 20. the temperature hovered near a mild 73 degrees, and for the first time the seating setup was altered so that the graduates and the audience were

not directly facing the sun. in his speech, nicholas “nico” Selemon shared a humorous anecdote about being named valedictorian, revealing his dread when he was summoned to principal Louis adipietro’s office and given the news: “[mr. adipietro’s] first words when i walked in were, ‘Look, nico, i tried my hardest to fudge your grades because i know you, and

i know this is not what you wanted, but i failed. But, congratulations — i know you can do this.’” Selemon went on to humbly acknowledge the “many students more qualified to recount all the experiences we have shared over the last four years,” and the fact that as an 18-year-old he has little advice to offer. He praised his fellow seniors for their many talents, emphasizing the impressiveness of the class when taken as a whole and ending with the words of rapper drake: “Started from the bottom, now my whole team here.” class president Jennifer rubin, the first speaker to address the class of 2013, talked about the many “firsts” students at Hastings have experienced together, as well as the many “lasts.” She also remained on stage to read out the names of the graduates, hugging nearly each one as they crossed the stage. Keynote speaker eric Kuhn, who graduated from HHS in 2005, talked about the weight of the word “no.” He shared a story from when he was in high school, and how through extreme persistence he was able to interview al Sharpton, then a presidential candidate, on the school’s amateur news show. Kuhn, who works as Hollywood’s first social media agent, has worked with celebrities such as Larry King, rick Sanchez and paul rudd.

other speakers included adipietro, school board president eileen Baecher, mother of graduate erin Baecher, and Schools Superintendent roy montesano, who is finishing his first year in Hastings. a handful of graduates decided to decorate their caps using cutout photographs, quotes written with fabric markers and sequins. Students etched the logos of their future colleges on the tops of hats as well as abstract designs and inspiring quotes. many members of the class of 2013 were well accustomed to the way graduation speeches function, as those enrolled in ap english Literature wrote and performed their own as their final assignment. their teacher, Joshua Blum, gave this unique assignment for the first time this year. “i thought it was an amazing way to end the year,” said Jessica dorsky, one of Blum’s students. “[the assignment] really helped me reflect on my high school experience.” as ray closed her speech, she left the audience with a quote from t.S. eliot’s poem “the Love Song of J. alfred prufrock.” She answered a question raised in the poem: “do i dare disturb the universe?” “Yes,” she said. “go disturb the universe. and if you are brave and daring, and if you find an occupation that makes you proud of yourself, whatever it may be, you will find that you have changed the universe for the better.” 

cott mosenthal personally greeted as many people as he could extend a hand to at the entrance to matthiessen park on the warm and sunny morning of Saturday, June 15. the occasion was irvington High School’s graduation, his last as principal. mosenthal, known by students as “dr. mo,” is retiring this summer after working 38 years at iHS, including the last 15 years as principal. three days later, on tuesday, June 18, the school’s library was named after him. “Yes, i am lucky enough to be principal of irvington High School,” he said in his welcoming remarks at the graduation, while it still held true. next, irvington Schools Superintendent Kris Harrison encouraged the class of 2013 to not be afraid to seek assistance as they move on to a challenging part of their lives, and reminded them that they too need to help give the world more character. “We buy more, but enjoy it less,” Harrison said. “We have big homes, but small families. We learned how to make a living, but not live lives. these are the times we need you young people.” irvington Board of education president robert grados reinforced the idea that the students won’t be alone as they progress to the next phase of their lives, but will have support from parents, teachers and other members of the irvington community. grados drew laughs from what he prefaced as the most important information he could give. “You are smarter now than you will ever be,” he joked. then mosenthal came to the podium to introduce the student speakers, and took the moment to reflect on what he is leaving behind. “the absolute best part of my job is welcoming young boys and girls to the high school as ninth-graders, and saying goodbye to them as young men and women,” mosenthal said. “i cannot think of a better class with whom to graduate.” Senior class president ciara morley, who is headed to Bentley college in the fall, started by making “dr. mo” the first 2013 graduate and presenting him with an honorary diploma. then she looked back on the days as a anxious freshman in high school. “So long ago we were that gullible, that nervous, that young,” morley said. Since then, she continued, they’ve matured to realize that their worries as ninthgraders weren’t so bad when compared to the challenges others face on a daily basis. going through that growth with the group of students she was standing beside in cap and gown created a bond she did not want to break. “i wish i didn’t have to leave, but class of 2013, our time is now,” she ended, followed by applause. Salutatorian miguel anderson, who starts at duke university in the fall, followed with

his experience as a new kid in irvington’s main Street School in the fourth grade. the young anderson was not at school for long on his first day before another student, who saw anderson sitting by himself, came over and talked to him.

“that was the first and last lunch i had alone at irvington,” he said. anderson recalled stories of enthusiastic teachers at iHS climbing on desks and using other techniques to engage him and his peers. He pointed out some of his close friends

in the sea of seniors, including a memorable moment when he wished his girlfriend and fellow senior a happy six-month anniversary. for valedictorian dylan goldstein, who will attend the university of pennsylvania, high school graduation always seemed like a day far away. “now the day we never thought would arrive is here,” goldstein said. “now we are faced with saying goodbye to all that is familiar.” While it was time to say goodbye, goldstein said it wasn’t time to forget the people that made irvington High School enjoyable, or the moments that made it memorable. “it is important to never lose sight of these simple pleasures,” he said. “it’s clear how much could be lost in constantly looking toward the next step.” the next steps for the iHS class of 2013 were across the stage to receive their diplomas. With all of the graduates holding their diplomas and ready to erupt with joy, mosenthal had the final word in front of the last 168 students he’d call his own. “i am one of those people who found the perfect job, in the perfect place, with the perfect people,” he said. a standing ovation followed. then mosenthal gave the signal and the graduates launched their hats into the air. 
