A very warm welcome to the VM & Display Awards, now in its 25th year and 14th in its current format — the only dedicated UK event that recognises and celebrates this highly innovative and talented industry. After last year’s success we are pleased to celebrate this year’s awards back at The Bloomsbury Big Top, with TV personality Hal Cruttenden as the evening’s host. Over the last 14 years, the VM & Display Awards have strived to highlight the skills and commitment of those professionals working to promote the image, products and services of retailers and brands, and to attract and inspire customers. The Retail Focus Readers’ Choice Award returns this year, which reached out to the industry and beyond who voted for their favourite window display from September 2017 to August 2018. A big thank you to our panel of judges and award sponsors, without whom this event would not be possible. Please join me in congratulating and celebrating this year’s winners and nominees, as well as the entire VM and display industry for their hard work, passion and dedication.

FOREWORD KARL MCKEEVER To say it’s been a year of uncertainty and rapid change in retail is something of an understatement. The challenges facing the industry have been well documented, in every sector and every city across Britain. It can feel difficult at times to shake off the apparent doom and gloom that surrounds our industry. But tonight we are here to celebrate success. And what success looks like for visual merchandising going forward is likely to be very different. The pressure to drive sales and profitability from physical stores is at an all-time high. This means that now more than ever you will be asked to think and work in new ways to deliver the positive uplift in performance that many retailers currently crave. And to do so at pace. We’re entering the age of High Velocity Retail — the theme of next year’s World Retail Congress in Amsterdam. Here, global retail leaders will gather to discuss not what the future of retail looks like, but how to overcome the challenges so many are facing right here, right now. Think of the saying, widely credited to Einstein: ‘Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.’ Retailers must do things differently if they are to survive, let alone thrive. Adapting business models, adjusting cultures, empowering teams. Hard work? Yes. Worth it? Absolutely.

The time has come for visual merchandising to deliver more. It’s too complacent to think ‘visual’ is its only purpose. But it must also bring a clear commercial impact. This isn’t a new challenge by any means. Indeed I touched upon it in my Foreword for last year’s programme (‘prove the value that VM adds to retail performance’) and have raised it countless times over the last year, in my monthly column for Retail Focus and beyond. But it’s an increasingly urgent challenge. The magnifying glass is now firmly focused on how VM can positively contribute to profits. With unprecedented cost cutting by retailers, there has never been such vital need to invest in the right things, for the right people. The government talks about ‘backing business’ and this in turn is about retail leaders ‘backing VM’. Every member of every team across every store must have the knowledge, understanding and skills to deliver visual excellence, consistently. Cost cutting might be tempting, but targeted investment is the only way for

retailers to see profits increase across the company. Amid growing numbers of store closure, every store is under the spotlight and must prove its worth. However, it would be futile for senior leadership teams to expect all the answers to come from within. It’s not an acknowledgement of failure to ask for help to deliver your goals. Indeed, it’s often a big step towards achieving them. There’s no shortage of us out there, with the knowledge, expertise, objectivity – and sometimes the required level of detachment — to gain the traction needed to deliver improvements. At pace and at scale. Enjoy celebrating your well-deserved success tonight... and tomorrow let’s herald in the new dawn of High Velocity Retail. Karl

RETAIL FOCUS

READERS’ CHOICE AWARD Winner:

JOSEPH V&A

in collaboration with Harlequin Design

Joseph’s scheme featured ‘Light, strong and versatile’, an installation to coincide with the ‘Plywood: Material of the Modern World’ exhibition at the V&A Museum in London. Using one repeat shape cut from 0.8mm aeroply, the team simply tabbed together piece after piece to create six pillars which were used as the basis for the structure. On site, these were then joined to the back walls and built up towards the ceiling to create a world for the mannequins to exist within.
