As physical retail evolves, design and experience have become more powerful tools than ever. The Creative Retail Awards have recognised the very best in retail, leisure, and hospitality design & display since 2018. With categories including sustainability, omni channel, technology, VM schemes, POP/POS, shopfitting, store design, experience, and innovation, the Awards recognise talent across the full spectrum the industry.

The 2022 Judging Panel independently shortlisted and selected the Winning and Highly Commended entries submitted by suppliers, designers and retailers from across the globe.

The night was attended by the Who’s Who list of suppliers, designers, and retailers including ASDA, Chopard, Dermalogica, Harrods, Harvey Nichols, Musgrave Group, Ribble Cycles, Sky, Sports Direct, and many more.

The big night took place at Proud Embankment on the 22nd of September, with the Creative Retail Awards’ unique take on a ceremony that blends networking with an informal party atmosphere celebrating the diversity in our industry. Shunning the traditional gala dinner format, the Awards ceremony was interspersed with enthralling live acts, finishing with a live band and DJ into the small hours.

Each Award category gave the shortlisted entrants a chance to walk away with a Highly Commended or Winner’s trophy in front of a supportive crowd of industry peers. Winners this year included projects from retailers such as AT&T, Bonadea, Chanel, Coach, Nestlé, and Woolworths South Africa.

Store Design of the Year was won by Sports Direct with their new Oxford Street store, with the Retail Experience Award going to Chanel and Harrods for their Door Nº 5 in celebration of 100 years of Chanel Nº5. The ceremony closed with the announcement of the Judges’ Choice Award, which this year went to Portuguese tinned goods store Comur Coimbra, from Grupo O Valor do Tempo.

In the same month that the Cannes Film Festival celebrated its 75th anniversary, on the 25th May the Shop & Display Equipment Association held its 75th Annual General Meeting. SDEA members logged on to the Virtual AGM and heard all about the hard work that has been undertaken over the past year for SDEA members and the exciting plans in store for the year ahead.

During the day’s proceedings Mark Chatterton, Managing Director of Morplan was voted as the new President of the Association and Rob Hill, Production Director of Graphica Display was elected Vice President.

The new President opened his report in an optimistic frame of mind at the prospect of being at the helm of the Association and said: “As I take up the presidency of the SDEA I look forward with a degree of optimism as retailers find their feet again and look forward with confidence to the years ahead.” He spoke about the fleetness of foot of the Association and its members ability to support retailers who consistently look to re imagine their customer offering, keeping themselves relevant, and above all interesting.

The President closed his report with a positive sentiment: “I firmly believe that this year will be a good one for our industry, and I look forward to the SDEA being the voice of our industry in as many forums as we are able to push it. I don’t think there is a better time to be a member of the Association, providing reassurance to those retailers who are leading the revival that they are dealing with credible partners as we all strive to bounce back from the last two years.” Mark had held the position of Vice President of the Association for the previous two years.

From the dark beginnings of carbon intensive processes to becoming global leaders in offering carbon negative products, this story telling sculpture charts the incredible product developments made by Interface and certainly stood out from the crowds at Clerkenwell Design Week.

CREATIVE IDEA’S WORK WOWS THE CROWDS AT CLERKENWELL DESIGN WEEK

Expertly handcrafted by the company’s creative development team, this single installation piece was a huge success, and Creative Idea enjoyed the challenge of being able to test their creative abilities, bringing them to life.

Creative Idea’s Creative team met the original challenge from the client of representing their admirable sustainability journey in physical form and once they got their hands on Interface’s unique yarn used in production, the exceptional work unravelled. This special yarn at the centre of their client’s product offerings was the focus feature of the sculpture, beautifully intertwined in an unfolding colour spectrum from dark to bright portraying the company mission of a carbon negative future.

The team worked in a dynamic and practical way to bring their designs to life and made sure that all materials used were chosen for their sustainable credentials, with many parts being redeployed after the event.

Forecasting where retail will go next is a tricky business. But there are some current trends that are likely to be around for the foreseeable future.

The cost of living crisis is focusing attention on value right now, but the importance of values is unlikely to diminish. The vibrant Make Earth Green Again pop up launched by L’Occitane en Provence earlier this year is just one notable example of how brands are working to build ethical and sustainability messaging into their physical store environments.

Having emerged from the pandemic, customers are hungry for (and choosing to spend their money within) retail experiences that deliver what insight platform BEAUTYSTREAMS has termed “Joyology” The visually rich (and furry) Balenciaga London pop up showcases how brands can think beyond the four walls of a store to engage customers in new, relevant, and more responsive ways.

The possibilities of the Metaverse, if not quite the understanding just yet, are broad. Brands are experimenting. Others are watching and waiting. All brands (and consumers for that matter) must do now is figure out, “what it can do for me?” Time will tell… but expect to see investment in the Meta move up another gear as we enter 2023.

Cardiff Metropolitan University’s in house print team is helping the faculty to reduce waste, environmental impact and cost by refurbishing furniture instead of buying new.

The approach is in line with the university’s sustainability strategy. Desks that had been earmarked for replacement at a cost of £1,500 each, were refurbished at a fraction of the cost giving a significant monetary saving and reduction in environmental impact.

The result was so successful that the university estates team has expressed an interest in covering a further 500 office desks across the campuses.

ANTALIS

DON’T REPLACE AND WASTE REFURBISH!

The in house print department has since set up a showroom with eight desks on display each covered in a different Coala Interior Film finish from which the university’s departments can choose. The print team has already received several commissions, including a new student catering outlet, a new 'Global Lounge', hybrid working offices and redesigned spaces in the university’s library and IT suites.

The desks are being refurbished using Antalis’ range of Coala Interior Film, part of the Coala range of self adhesive media that offers substrates for indoor and outdoor use. Coala Interior Film comprises 470+ surface finishes across nine collections: wood, leather, marble, stone, metallic, glitter, solid colours, fabric and soft touch. The easily applied architectural films offer an inexpensive way to update interior spaces, including doors, walls and furniture.

Visual Communications Product Manager at Antalis, Mike Collins, comments: “The work of the print team at Cardiff University is a great example of the kind of results that can be achieved with Coala Interior Film. Easy to apply, application of the product requires no investment in printing or finishing equipment. At Antalis, we offer training to help upskill and reskill staff in the art of self adhesive film application. We also offer swatches of the Coala Interior Film range to make it easier to select from the extensive range of finishes and colours available.”

Private Healthcare Is Peace Of Mind

No matter how fit and healthy we are, it is inevitable that at some point in our lives we will fall ill and need medical care. And when illness does strike it is to the NHS that most people will turn in seeking a diagnosis, treatment and recovery.

The NHS has for some years been showing signs that it, too, is not in the best of health. A growing and ageing population is putting an ever increasing strain on staff and services. A problem exacerbated by the coronavirus pandemic.

Reports of underfunding, a shortage of medical staff, noisy and overcrowded wards, cancelled operations and long waiting times will be familiar to everyone.

In England, hospital waiting lists are longer than ever before, with a total waiting list of 6 million people one in nine of the population.** This is the highest number since records began and illustrates the devastating impact that COVID 19 has caused the NHS.

Quick, private and convenient

Understandably, these lengthy delays are causing additional stress for patients, undermining their health and quality of life even further. How many people do you know whose physical health and mental well being has deteriorated from the anxiety of having to wait months for a hospital appointment?

All this can be avoided by taking out private health insurance. Seeing a doctor in private practice used to be only for the wealthy, but not anymore as the cost of private medical cover is becoming more affordable.

A private medical plan delivers prompt access to hospital consultants, thus avoiding lengthy waiting lists. Patients can choose from an extensive list of hospitals throughout the UK; if they need to be admitted, they will have their own private room equipped with TV and telephone, and visiting is arranged to suit patient and family. A quick, private and convenient service that removes many of the anxieties associated with NHS hospital stays. Furthermore, some providers have no upper age limit attached to their policies and cover can even be extended to include family members.

Taking control of your healthcare

However, those interested in taking out health insurance should not leave it too late. As we get older our healthcare needs increase. Therefore, as only some of the best health insurance companies provide cover for pre existing conditions, the best time to invest in getting private treatment for illnesses you may suffer tomorrow is today.

By acting now you can ensure your future healthcare will not be dictated by NHS bureaucracy and, just as importantly, you will be able to benefit from the widest possible cover.

Private health insurance cannot guarantee good health, but it can ensure that when you are feeling unwell you will quickly receive the best possible care, when and where you want it. The peace of mind that comes with that knowledge cannot be underestimated and is often the most important factor for people deciding to take control of their healthcare provision and "go private".

The Shop and Display Equipment Association has agreed with HMCA to offer discounted rates for medical plans. HMCA only arrange medical plans for membership groups and can offer up to a 40% discount off the underwriter’s standard rates.
