Introduction A very warm welcome to another exciting SDEA Retail Display Directory. As always, we uncover some of the latest and greatest in retail design and display. It will come as no surprise that half of these new stores are in London. Although there have been no mammoth retail and leisure shopping centres, two very distinct destinations have opened their doors. The ICON Outlet at The O2, one of the City’s most recognisable buildings, continues to draw audiences with the addition of retail to the established entertainment venue. Coal Drops Yard at King’s Cross attempts to unite the local community as well as visitors by offering an eclectic selection of cutting edge retailers within an architecturally led, diverse development. Globally three iconic brands have launched new stores. Luxury British heritage brand Mulberry has created an utterly fabulous new artistic concept on Regent Street and German footwear leader Birkenstock has opened its first US flagship delivering its own retail experience to New York. In Madrid Johnnie Walker has launched an awesome experience store, where consumers have the option of sampling the famed Scottish tipple. As is fashionable nowadays, we discover stores that provide ‘Instagrammable’ moments. Minimalist ice cream parlour Milk Train cools its Covent Garden clientele with its Art Deco interior and Angels in Dubai entrances customers with lofty heights and enormous angel’s wings. At Westfield London, Skopes offers a contemporary take on a traditional tailors, all precisely fitted and finished, to launch its suits to a new generation of wearers. In Hagen, Germany, Thalia, gives a contemporary and beautifully crafted take on a traditional bookstore. Finally, back home we visit an ingenious small, independent coffee chain, 200 Degrees that is causing a stir in the East Midlands. Creative Retail Awards Crown The Best in Retail Design and Display. The Creative Retail Awards held at London’s newest super-club, Proud Embankment, on 6th June 2019, were once again an outstanding success. The Awards were attended by some of the most influential and creative minds from all around the world to celebrate the entire spectrum of retail design and display. The Creative Retail Awards have quickly become one of the most distinguished accolades within the retail industry. They recognise projects that have demonstrated the very highest level of innovation and excellence within retail. A panel of industry leaders and experts including senior staff from LEGO Group, Hammerson plc, M. Worldwide, The Honest Brand and The Fashion Retail Academy were faced with the difficult decision of judging a winner within each discipline. These included innovative display products, technology, lighting, POP, store design, surfaces, visual merchandising and many more. The evening‘s celebrations combined the perfect blend of networking with an informal party atmosphere that was enjoyed by the diverse retail and display community. www.shopdisplay.org

The event included a Prosecco reception, DJ, live band and eclectic, world-renowned performance artistes, including fire and aerial acts. Winners on the night included Woolworths South Africa, Flannels, Leicester City Football Club with Kesslers, Clarins with CSM Retail, Joseph with Harlequin Design and Primark with Stylo. There are plenty of stores, restaurants and bars to hold your interest for a full day in The O2 and ICON before setting foot in the music venues, bowling alley, cinema or freejumping arena – you can even harness up and climb over the main roof.

8 ICON is purposely placed within The O2 sharing some of its most notable features; the tented roof and enormous yellow pylons can be viewed throughout, yet it has its own unique and powerful identity. The impressive entrance, framed on either side by enormous white pillars, rises up beneath the formidable dome. A grand staircase, banked on either side by lengthy escalators, permits a steady flow of shoppers into its midst. The mall is open and generous in proportions having a bright and airy feel partly due to the translucent effect of the roof, as well as the polished floors that reflect more light back onto the surrounding surfaces. LED lighting has been used to enable the tone and look to shift depending on the time of day and enhances the superior luminous quality to further evoke the feeling of space and tranquillity within this cutting edge environment. The designers, CRTKL have focused their labours on the ceiling treatment; it has been divided into two areas for maximum impact and quality of light. The two storey section has a canopy along its length
creating the effect of a dappled, tree-lined boulevard allowing glimmers of light to bounce off the surfaces on both levels. Vast wooden posts supporting the roof above plant themselves into the ground like tree trunks and appear rooted firmly to the spot. Whilst in the single level portion the ceiling is a stunning, white finned expanse designed to maximise the daylight that permeates through. It is imposing but not overpowering and creates an elegant backdrop from which the stores can shine. Individual outlets retain the overall design and style of the development, yet each showcases something distinctly different and exciting in its shopfittings and display. Although modest in size at 2,500 sq ft on average, these retail gems ooze quality and flair. ICON adds an extra dimension to The O2 and is big on experience, a major pulling factor in our continually complex financial times and will be undoubtedly a massive boost for Greenwich’s economy. I would definitely recommend a visit to this unique and stylish emporium.

COAL DROPS YARD, KINGS CROSS Striving for excellence in innovation, service and design Coal Drops Yard delivers an explosion of retail creativity to London’s King’s Cross. The carefully curated selection of brands brings a whole new meaning to the words ‘retail experience’. From a freshly baked loaf of artisan bread to an exquisitely tailored designer suit, there is something for everyone. Coal Drops Yard is a ‘rags to riches’ story. Formerly a coal store that helped supply the capital with its power, the disused and derelict site has been totally transformed by designers, Heatherwick Studio, into a cutting edge retail destination that has a simply sublime architectural feature at its heart. Two kissing roofs sit atop of two long Victorian brick buildings that were once literally the end of the line, via rail, from the coal mines in the North. These incredible feats of engineering seemingly touch, linking the large cobblestone yard in
between. The roofs fuse the ancient coal drops to the modern, new centre using highly advanced engineering technology. The column free creation, leans, holds itself together and then comes back to the linear structures beneath them, bearing no additional weight at all. It presents an incredible focal point and an area beneath where you can meet friends and take shelter from the elements. A phenomenal 80,000 slate tiles were used on the roof. They came from the same seam of the Welsh mine used for the original roof in 1850. 52 new steel columns, which are woven into the fabric of the 19th century buildings, support the gargantuan 35m wide roof, unseen. However it’s not just the roof that is impressive; inside huge swathes of wood run the length of the roof following its curve. 64 full height glass panes are set on the diagonal along the full expanse of the buildings and provide a stunning view of the square below.

12 King’s Cross is the largest urban regeneration project within Europe and Coal Drops Yard is the latest chapter in the £3 billion development of this district with a rich and colourful past. As such it was imperative that the designers created a contemporary, bold destination that had soul not just sensation. One that would appeal to every sector of society, opening up this once closed area and turning it into a public space that works in conjunction with the shopping; creatively led with meaning to appeal to the eclectic community on a whole new level. A shopping centre that will be bookmarked as a favourite for future visits! Coal Drops Yard houses 100,000 sq ft of shopping, dining and events over two floors via a series of streets linked both horizontally and vertically. Retail outlets range from fledgling pop ups in spaces as small as 160 sq ft to distinguished designers taking units in excess of 20,000 sq ft - all with a common theme, the quest for vibrancy and individuality. With entrances at both ends of the complex and multiple connections into the yard via bridges and stairs, it creates a highly accessible space that allows people to flow in and around.

The shops, restaurants and cafés are all extra special – there is everything from a charity shop to a four storey department store. Boutique by Shelter is no ordinary charity shop. It has been professionally designed, has its own Instagram account and handpicks its range of donations to ensure they only stock exclusive, second hand, designer wear. Take away the advertising slogans which, to be fair, are very accomplished and you have a cutting edge, urban industrialist store on a par with any designer. It’s something else! But then so is Wolf and Badger - a department store that promotes independents; its flagship presents an even more dynamic and differentiated concept incorporating stationery, flowers, bikes, a café, restaurant and terrace. Wolf and Badger endorses everything unique, ethical and unusual and showcases some of the world’s best designers large and small, established and new. This is an unmissable retailer showcasing unique, inspiring products from the world’s best independent brands. There is something wonderful about Coal Drops Yard. Whilst admittedly it is expensive shopping, the nurturing of new talent brings an altogether more rounded and true retail experience. I absolutely love it and can’t wait for my next visit.

MULBERRY, REGENT STREET A visit to London’s premium shopping street, Regent Street, has become almost a tradition and one which often features within our latest and greatest retail reviews. This year we’ve had the ultimate pleasure of covering one of Britain’s best and most celebrated brands, Mulberry. Renowned for its exquisite leather handbags, accessories and fashion attire, Mulberry has led the way in British ingenuity and craftsmanship from its manufacturing base in Somerset for over 40 years. Whilst remaining true to their intrinsic values, Spanish born Johnny Coca took the reins in 2015 and launched the quintessentially British brand into an even more modern and relevant period on its incredible retail journey. The recently launched Regent Street flagship is the
epitome of British eccentricity, modernism and style. More like a work of art, the new store has been cleverly constructed to give the appearance of a painting with multiple layers of colour, shape and texture combining, intertwining and complimenting each other. Creative Director Coca, whose background is in both design and architecture, worked with artist and interior designer Faye Toogood to create one of the most iconic and beautiful recent retail designs. The dynamic duo describes the concept as “painterly British landscape within this modernist retail design”. Whilst there is definitely a degree of poetic licence within this statement, it is a fabulous fit-out and there are many artistic and architectural elements to it.

15 It has a powerful yet personal appeal; there is nothing standard about it. Mulberry’s new store represents sheer pleasure and indulgence on a highly creative level that perfectly suits the exceedingly high price tag. I love the new look and can’t help but admire the quality of the design. It is art and beauty combined perfectly in a commercial environment. The focal point of the main sales area are the curved, transparent screens that deconstruct the interior and provide novel shelving for a range of unique handbags and footwear. At the centre is an enormous colourful rug upon which a vivid, plush sofa has been positioned. The lighting above outlines the circle that has been created by the curved screens. This elliptical feature is formed and at the same time broken up with multiple, angular panels adding another contrasting aspect. Furthermore, large wall mounted pebble shaped mirrored
cabinets which, once opened, display more quirky items, steal the show. In fact it seems rather crude and inaccurate to describe these elegantly formed pieces as cabinets, they are nothing less than sculptural. Nothing is too bright, yet the overall effect is clearly bold. Zingy colours fuse together as in an artist’s palette and hand-woven flooring rugs have an extremely painterly quality about them; with large swathes of colour having the appearance of giant brush strokes. Striking walls in different shapes and hues also interject into the space and are juxtaposed against the perimeter. They display more artistically arranged product and form screens creating further layers within the incredible store. It is worth noting that nothing is heavily merchandised. Whilst the interior is evidently ergonomically inspired and highly tactile, in true modernist retail style it is equipped with its fair share of cutting edge technology. There are numerous mobile payment points, click and collect, same day 2 hour delivery within the London area and most importantly a seamless transition from online to instore. A facility termed ‘endless aisle shopping’ allows customers to select goods from anywhere in the Mulberry world and have it delivered to either the store or their door. It is good to know that a British heritage brand can successfully maintain relevance in today’s market place and still manufacture in the UK. Mulberry is as the designers describe, “a celebration of progressive British style that explores the beauty of contrasting materials, volumes, shapes, scales and sensibilities.” It remains sophisticated yet untraditional; the store being a true representation of its brand ethos. BIRKENSTOCK, NEW YORK We now have the privilege of investigating yet another renowned heritage brand synonymous with comfort and style. This niche German footwear manufacturer has distributed its product within the US for an astonishing 50 years and in spite of having 47 stores globally, has only recently launched its first dedicated North American flagship. Birkenstock has massaged our soles with its quirky, cork heeled sandals for centuries; in fact its roots date as far back as 1774. The retailer remains relevant in the new millennia having an enormously loyal customer base that also spans, coincidentally, an unusually large age range. From very young to old, consumers swear by their Birkenstocks. So the location and presentation of its inaugural US store was of great importance and significance. Sited within the trendy SoHo area of New York, the new showroom is equally fitting in terms of both the brand and the district - it is simply stunning.
The storefront retains the original brick facade emphasizing further the quality and longevity of Birkenstock. In the window, a diverse collection of display plinths are artistically positioned to draw you into the store. A mixture of cork, mirrored cubes and light boxes are deftly arranged to display the iconic shoes and sandals within the double height foyer, creating a very powerful first impression. Step inside and you are rewarded with an exciting, experience rich, brand led store that is both comfortable and cool. Materials used for footwear production have been applied to the interior; cork, leather and felt adorn the fit-out bringing a wholesome ambiance to a creative concept. Leather chairs, stools and even a leather clad counter complete with stainless steel top feature strongly within this natural environment. A complex arrangement of wall mounted, wooden boxes which display the products and lifestyle imagery are mirrored in the

open beamed, boxy ceiling construction overhead. These, alongside the decorative black metal screen that links the store’s two floors, of which the pattern is derived from the rubber sole design of the sandals, have all taken inspiration from the classic sandal. Exposed brick walls and stripped wood floors enhance the rustic feel. The detailed cabinetry combines perfectly with a simple palette of colours and materials: white stained wood, beech, stainless steel and brickwork painted white and au naturel. The display shelves, cupboards and plinths are well made and once again reflect the exceptional craftsmanship inherent in the brand. Furthermore, a large, bronze, wall mounted plaque depicting the logo is hung above the counter designated for customisation – the cobblers’ workbench is sited by the heritage wall complete with greenery and shadow boxes to commemorate the original shoe box design.
The store at 167 sq m, though not particularly large creates huge impact. Even though, as previously noted, the merchandise is displayed on a complex unit, incredibly the store design follows a very regular format around the perimeter leaving the main sales area free. Here, minimal tan leather stools form the seating alongside the beautifully crafted payment counter. However, it is the combination of materials and the neutral tones that set this store apart and anchor it intrinsically to its roots. Birkenstock together with TPG Architects have created a funky and highly stylish outlet, where New York residents can view the full range and even dip their toe into the exclusive and high end collections that reside on the second floor. If you happen to be passing I recommend a visit to this highly tactile interior – it’s a real pleasure to linger inside.

JOHNNIE WALKER, MADRID Over the years we’ve witnessed a multitude of brilliant brand experience stores launching across the globe, kick started by the immersive Nike Town, New York and quickly followed by the London store. Not to mention Apple with its myriad of lifestyle flagships across the world. More recently another brand leader has opened its first experience store in Madrid, Spain bringing a whole new meaning to Scotch whisky. Located on the corner of Calle De Serrano in the trendy Salamanca district of this vibrant capital, the new Johnnie Walker store has all the necessary attributes of an excellent experience store with ample room to roam around. The warm hue of the interior compliments the colour of the much loved Scottish spirit, whilst the wood flooring enhances the golden glow further. The store fixtures and fittings are exceptionally well designed and finished. The product displays themselves are completed with style and finesse.
Dalziel & Pow has created a sublimely beautiful and perfectly balanced store for Johnnie Walker’s Spanish debut. There is a real sense of luxury within this new concept and there are many different elements that make up the retail display; it is most definitely not off the shelf! Around the perimeter a variety of display devices have been created to curate the various whiskies within the Johnnie Walker range, including their rare malts. A bank of illuminated display cabinets, which appear to be recessed into the wall, encompasses wooden cupboards at the base for storage, shelving for the product and signage above backed with a darker wood for maximum impact. One whisky type is displayed on each unit. Another impressive display stand that almost covers the entire wall opposite showcases a different range of Scotch whisky. This seemingly freestanding unit is backlit and has wood shelves and cabinets that are attached to black metal

uprights. A further selection of Madrid exclusive whiskies are presented in oak barrels. Displayed within a wooden casing at the rear of the store, they create a bold and dramatic backdrop in an otherwise subtle interior.
However, the centre of the store is where the fun begins. The action takes place along three unique and beautifully crafted, experience led counters: an interactive hosting area where customers can discover the craft of cocktail making, a tasting table

22 where visitors can dive into the flavours that lie at the heart of the brand and a personalisation station where unique gifts can be found and engraved with bespoke messages and labels. The cocktail counter is quite spectacular having gold taps and two sinks set into a marble top; the wooden base is also decorated with a gold band. Bar stools are positioned around the unit for customers. A striking light feature is suspended overhead with multiple bare bulbs mounted beneath a black architectural framework. The personalisation stand is similar in design, though the tasting table, although also elliptical, has tiered wooden shelving and black metal edging; from ingredients to glasses it displays all the produce that goes into creating the cocktails – with everything available to purchase.
Another notable feature is the life size golden Johnnie Walker statue that can be seen clearly from the street, and stands proud at the heart of this stunning store. Naturally digital technology plays its part with a large wall mounted touch screen, encouraging customers to source cocktails and ingredients. The store also hosts events, including a range of master classes as well as private functions. If you are visiting Madrid put some time aside for a little retail therapy, you won’t be disappointed.

SKOPES, WESTFIELD LONDON For our next dynamic retail experience we return to London and review another well established brand with strong ties to the North of England. Menswear tailor Skopes has launched a dramatically different, visionary new flagship at Westfield, White City. This family owned business, now in its third generation, has been at the heart of the textile industry in Leeds for 70 years and is celebrating with the opening of the London store to deliver its stylish suits to the next generation of consumer. At the same time, it marks the start of its retail revolution with plans to open stores nationwide. Along with designers, Dalziel and Pow, Skopes applied its forward thinking culture to its distinguished heritage, whilst also expressing the creativity inherent in the brand to develop a radical store concept. From the striking entrance consisting of full height glass panels, enhanced with their trademark orange, factory inspired,
framework the store is extremely arresting. The interior unfolds before your eyes and intensifies in colour as you delve deeper; the swathes of colour mirrored in the bulkheads overhead, as well as through the faceless mannequins. Vivid orange and blues are plentiful. Starting at the front with cool white, you move onto the main sales floor and the tone shifts to shades of green. A further layer of white cleanses the palette ready to reveal the back of the store, where the mood shifts to a deep, dark blue. Orange highlights are splashed throughout adding a touch of individuality and flair. In addition to its liberal use of powerful hues the store ensures it appeals to the millennial audience. Ample Instagrammable features and digital screens with motion activated sensors to initiate key looks and attract attention abound on the perimeter walls and at the entrance. cabinet, turns shopping into a social occasion and extends the experience element of the store. The store has been mapped out into six different zones, such as ‘dress down Friday’ and ‘commuting in style’ - there is literally a suit for every occasion. Much of the showroom has been based around the 1960s factory floor and foreman’s offices, a nod to its manufacturing roots. The bright orange service desk was inspired by the cutting table and is used in place of a cash desk. It has a thick glass top for maximum sheen. The store has no till points and staff carry out all transactions digitally on tablets, bringing increased flexibility. The lighting is mostly track with the exception of the feature chandelier suspended over the lounge area at the rear. The changing rooms are of particular interest, wallpapered in Skopes signature brand pattern with a clever lighting control device to simulate the six different schemes, ‘the suit Lookbook’ as they call it; a dinner
suit demands evening lighting, whilst ‘off to the races’ requires bright daylight. It’s ingenious, fun and elevates the trying on experience - and is totally Instagrammable! A Polaroid wall is featured close to the fitting rooms to complete the experience, where customers can be snapped in suit and put on show. Otherwise the store is compact at 217 sq m. Fixtures and fittings remain neutral so as not to detract from the enigmatic environment and the suits themselves. Considering the brand has been in business for so long, the design is fresh, contemporary, vibrant and youthful with considerable foresight. The year of inception scribed on the store front builds credibility and reputation on an altogether impressive offer.

MILK TRAIN, COVENT GARDEN Crossing the capital to Covent Garden, we uncover something entirely unusual. Milk Train has recently opened a fabulously cool ice cream parlour. You can never underestimate the power of the internet. Whilst it has been known to damage bricks and mortar retail, it is of late also driving new store openings as many online brands formalise their offer. Having previously worked out of pop-up locations, the vendor was propelled to fame by its massive Instagram following. This whacky ice cream phenomenon has launched its first permanent store in the tourist filled area of Covent Garden, and is swiftly converting the masses to its ice cream wrapped in candy floss delights. Milk Train has a heavenly interior, the dreamlike quality of which both instantly relaxes you and conveys an air of nostalgia. It presents its followers with numerous Instagrammable moments.
The entire store is railway themed and perfectly fuses traditional Art Deco and the age of steam; creating what has to be the coolest train station I’ve ever seen. Crisp, clean, light and airy, the pale blue hues of the store are the perfect counterbalance to the colourful, whimsical product. The arched black steel framework that traverses the space brings character to the parlour. Milk Train has taken all the romance from the age of steam travel and applied it to this exciting new location. The compact space is crammed with railway related references. The blackboard behind the counter displays the ice cream menu in white block letters to symbolise the station shutter board that shows train departures and platforms. Simple, monochromatic, back lit signage above the counter - order, arrivals and collect - tell you exactly where to be positioned for your tasty treat. Mind the Melt messaging printed on the floor is a play on Transport for London’s

30 ‘Mind the Gap’ announcements. Even the seating booths, whilst elegantly upholstered in baby blue leather, are similar in design to railcar seating - the booths are numbered accordingly. Thin, black, metal straps arch through and echo the carriage shape; globe lighting further enhances the station theme. A luggage rack at the far end of the ‘assumed’ carriage is loaded with authentic suitcases creating a fun feature. My favourite element has to be the cloudlike structures seemingly floating high in the ceiling that give the impression of steam. It’s a surreal experience that aptly promotes the quirky brand message. A fantasy land, that has been accurately
interpreted instore, provides an adaptable space that can evolve as quickly as Instagram trends, whether for the seasons, occasions or fashion. With its frosted glass at the store’s front facade to mimic foggy windows, the ice cream vendor entices customers inside where it delivers a dynamic and different design. Stripped right back and baring all, it’s a haven of peace and tranquillity in our overloaded, multi-sensory world. Londonbased design agency FormRoom have developed a blueprint for the company that is both immersive and adaptable. Make Milk Train the next stop on your journey!

ANGELS, DUBAI We travel to Dubai for another experience rich retail environment, where a kidswear retailer is entertaining everyone. Appealing equally to tourists as well as locals, AWR Lifestyle has introduced a new concept store to ensure shopping with children is an enjoyable and fun experience. Located in the Dubai Mall the store has many heavenly connotations presented in an entirely different context to our previous review of Milk Train. With the aid of Barber Design, the luxury childrenswear retailer has created an awesome interior. The opening delivers an almost seamless transition from the mall apart from a huge pair of angel’s wings and a floor to ceiling lightbox. The formidable wings literally stop you in your tracks and provide customers with the opportunity to
snap their social media moment before entering the store. Once inside the store the most outstanding feature is the ceiling. It is not just the lofty heights of this fabulous space that demand your attention, but the whale-boned style structure of white fins, traversing the entire expanse of the store’s ceiling and cunningly mimicking the wings. It is simply magnificent – clearly these highly stylised interiors are playing a vital role in the retail experience, conveying a sense of wonder and awe. The entire outlet is ergonomically shaped to symbolise soft angelic attributes; a recurring feature throughout the store that has been designed to engage and delight Angels’ customers.

33 The shopfittings and fixtures are of particular note in this exciting concept and are integral to the interior design creating multiple focal points. They are very much part and parcel of the design and enhance the angelic theme further. Elliptical, chrome wayfinding and product branding can be found above individual clothing display stands and heading up perimeter units. The freestanding clothes racks themselves are styled as wings and halos. Chrome bars rise up from a neat chrome plinth and curve outwards on either side, where clothing cascades downwards creating a waterfall effect. Other freestanding units, also in sleek, shiny chrome are elliptical and garments are merchandised directly through the ellipse following the curve. The clothing and accessories are interwoven into the very fabric of this spectacular flagship.
The seating areas are clearly designed for little people, low elliptical, white display tables have interactive screens embedded for game playing and videos. Jars of lollipops are on hand to aid the experience. Angels is a complete departure from the more frequent gaudy and vibrant children’s outlets. The pure white interior is complemented with pale blue, pink and indigo lighting highlights, bringing a fairytale feel to the store. Finally, incredibly long, floor to ceiling drapes instil a theatrical, almost magical ambiance enhancing the curvaceous fins and the fluidity of the interior. With brands such as Burberry, Fendi and Ferrari instore, the interior had to be perfect. Angels is classy - it is the epitome of luxury. Whilst perhaps a little too far away to pay a visit, it is without doubt another great, experience-rich environment.

THALIA, HAGEN In our digitally driven world it is always a pleasure to welcome the launch of a new bookstore, especially one that presents itself with impact. What could be more enthralling than a sensational story bound by a physical cover! Thalia has stores in Germany, Austria and Switzerland and has recently opened an impressive new flagship in Hagen, Germany. Inside the new shop we discover yet another incredible ceiling treatment that grabs your attention and draws your eye through the store. JHP worked with Thalia to design an impossibly cool, contemporary interior for readers of all ages and backgrounds. This highly regarded bookseller has over 300 stores, organises over 3000 events annually, owns a publisher, a printer and an online bookshop, and has been in business since 1919. Thalia has adapted over the years and still dominates the Germanic market today. Is it any wonder they required such a stunning interior!
As with all good bookshops in our technologically advanced times, Thalia has fully immersed itself in the retail experience curating specific areas for various activities and events: signings, readings, storytelling, art workshops and writing courses. Each has its very own unique zone in this fabulous fit-out. These have been created in addition to the more usual cafÊ, reading lounges and children’s area, which all possess distinct styles yet fuse together as one. Linking all these diverse areas are some incredible features. Multiple columns reach up to the ceiling and highlight individual focal points. In the lounge section a pillar forms the trunk of an enormous, impressive, slatted tree, whose branches fan out over the area creating a stunning centre piece – books are displayed around the trunk. At the front of the store, the base of an equally sensational post is used to merchandise seasonal, book related products and accessories, whilst the top section is illuminated displaying an

image of someone reading. The light emitted bleeds across the ceiling creating a subtle glow. Many columns are spread throughout the entire sales floor, each having a different colour or theme to help depict the various areas. Lighting is also used to delineate parts of the environment. A gigantic, circular diffuser is hung over the kids’ zone illuminating the vibrant colours below and simulating daylight to encourage exploration and adventure amongst the books. A curved sofa follows the arc of the light and a much larger, circular track of spots helps further define the area. Large directional spotlights are utilised in the cafÊ to add a theatrical flair to the otherwise SDEA Retail Display Directory

calm and subdued surroundings, where warm wood refectory tables and muted grey bucket chairs are aligned with precision. The chandelier above the escalators is phenomenal; numerous, large, illuminated rings are suspended at varying heights over the stairwell creating yet another powerful aerial feature in this tremendous interior. The wall beside the escalators is equally striking covered in massive, monochromatic, blue and white brand related graphic imagery. The interior combines ergonomic curves and circular sweeps with angular fixtures and fittings, creating a natural symbiosis that transports this store from a traditional book retailer to a modern, inviting store that encourages dwell time. The floor as well as the fixtures and fittings are neutral toned wood veneer that allows the books and other merchandise to stand out on the shelves. The cash desks are formal
and finished in a darker wood veneer – a row of branded bags are showcased along the front. Naturally, digital screens are included instore, positioned on the perimeter walls and behind the cash desks for both education and navigation. There’s even a self serve booth on the exterior for collecting books ordered and paid for online. This store has it all and from outside its enormous glass shop front allows views across the entire two storey outlet encouraging customers into the shop amidst a relaxed and soothing ambiance – essential in today’s climate. It’s all about experience and Thalia has it by the bucket load. If you happen to be on the continent drop in to one of their stores and rediscover the art of reading – it’s a real treat!

200 DEGREES, LINCOLN Creating an experience rich interior that conjures up the art of relaxation and exudes innovation is something that comes naturally to our next food and beverage outlet. An expanding East Midlands based coffee chain, 200 Degrees has worked with designers Retail Design Solutions to develop an interior that is both urban and cosmopolitan yet full of ambiance and charm. With so much competition in this market the options for a quick cuppa and a light bite are limitless – the interior has to be appealing but needless to say so does the food and beverage! Staying true to their brand and ethos, 200 Degrees created an atmospheric environment that reciprocates the quality and empathy inherent in its heritage. Successfully combining old and new, as is currently so popular, the new store is suitably located in an old building sited at the heart of the recently transformed
historic Cornhill quarter in Lincoln. Reclaimed wood floors, exposed brickwork and ceiling ducting convey a feeling of permanence and honesty to this timeless, yet contemporary interior. The instore aura delights the senses. The quirky lighting instils warmth and age, much like welcoming an old friend into your home, whilst the lofty ceiling breathes space and drama into its eclectic surroundings. The Lincolnshire outlet presents a contradiction in itself; it feels wholesome and raw, yet at the same time polished and pristine - finished to perfection. The stunning slate topped, rolled metal counter, which is exquisitely merchandised with an array of artfully arranged dainty dishes, greets you as you enter the café and sets the scene - the coffee machines, rows of cups and beans are visible just beyond. Small, unambiguous, café style tables and

A long refectory style table and numerous stools are positioned in the centre of the walkway that links the service area at the front to the main seating area at the rear. Nestled into the stairwell that leads to the mezzanine and the barista school is another seating section complete with comfy lounging chairs, a fireplace with quirky neon flames, pictures and bookshelves.
There are lots of unique features in this charismatic coffee shop from the antique chest of drawers used for condiments to the fringe edged, free-blown glass hanging pendants. This cafÊ concept provides a sophisticated, yet understated, relaxed interior with a difference. If you find yourself in lovely Lincoln, pay a visit to 200 Degrees and spend some time sampling their range of coffee and cake. It’s definitely worth it!
