Take a tour of Newquay to discover that there’s much more to this north coast gem than meets the eye. Newquay is a hub for all things by the sea, whether it’s watching the world-renowned surf from the clifftops or sampling the sensational food on offer.
Beaches Stretching between two headlands, the iconic Fistral Beach sees some excellent surf, which makes for a fantastic spectators’ sport, admiring the waves over a picnic. Lusty Glaze, nestled between the cliffs in a natural amphitheatre, is truly paradise found. This inimitable beachside venue plays host to live music throughout the year,
Head to Holywell Bay and, at first, you may find yourself deceived, as the beach is obscured by sand dunes. Scale these, however and you’ll be met by an enticing expanse of golden sand, roughly a mile long. Sunset walks and beach days are well spent at Holywell Bay and, with plenty of facilities on hand, as well as an 18-hole golf course nearby, there’s plenty to keep everyone entertained, whatever their inclination.

Eating out Newquay is fast becoming a foodie destination in its own right, with a diverse array of popular eateries taking root. For the taste aficionados out there, you simply must try The Fish House, Fistral. Using locally caught fish and shell fish, the chefs here use only the best seasonal ingredients, cooking to a menu that offers rustic dishes and authentic flavours. For real seafood lovers, another must-visit is Rick Stein. Also located on Fistral Beach, Rick Stein offers a wealth of sumptuous seafood dishes as well as a host of events and live music. Its casual, laidback atmosphere is welcome after a day’s exploring and it’s a great spot from which to take in the Cornish coast. For catch-of-the-day specials and brasserie favourites, get yourselves to Lewinnick Lodge. Wednesday night is steak night, a firm local favourite, and with signature dishes available daily, using ingredients sourced from local, Cornish suppliers, there’s an option for every appetite.

A place to unwind Whether you like to while away your afternoons in the spa or gently make you way around a golf course, Newquay has something for you. At Newquay Golf Club you can let off steam over a few rounds backdropped by the unrivalled views over Fistral Beach. Cornwall is synonymous with rejuvenation and relaxation, and with The Headland Hotel on your doorstep, you really can take some time out to unwind and reconnect with yourself. A number of spa day packages are available, allowing you to enjoy your day, your way. Trerice House, an Elizabethan manor just under three miles from Lusty Glaze, is a true Cornish gem. Take a clifftop stroll along the rugged headlands of Pentire Head
Walks You’re spoilt for choice when it comes to walks around Newquay, with stunning stretches of coastline at every turn. Watergate Bay to Porth is a particular gem. Beginning on the beach at Watergate Bay, this route follows the beach to Whipsiddery, before crossing Trevelgue Head to reach Porth beach. Returning via Fruitful Cove, walkers can drink in the sensational views over Watergate Bay. The Gannel Estuary is a tidal river offering some excellent exploration opportunities. With all kinds of wildlife, from wading birds to shoals of fish, this is a great spot for breaking out the binoculars. Pentire Headland, meanwhile, is especially beautiful as the sun begins its descent. Head to the furthest point on the headland, where stunning views of the Atlantic are enough to inspire anybody to come back to Newquay, time and time again!

Happy owners Having lived in the Wadebridge area for a while, Andy and Celestine wanted to move nearer the ocean and dreamt of a maintenance-free garden with plenty of outdoor storage.
