Consultants and Annual Updates The events and conferences in this section focus on specific areas of the speciality, such as urogynaecology or obstetric emergency training. They are not specifically designed for fulfilling curriculum requirements but provide opportunities for learning, debate and development. Our experienced faculty are at the forefront of new and developing areas of topical interest and respond by organising events each year on these important subjects. Look out for our conference on Management of Multiple Pregnancy and the new Expert Witness courses, which are in partnership with Bond Solon, the UK’s leading legal training company for non-lawyers, to offer specialist training for obstetricians and gynaecologists acting as expert witnesses. Don’t miss the RCOG Annual Professional Development Conference, 24-26 November. This meeting is fully booked every year, so be sure to book your place early. In 2016 the RCOG World Congress will be coming back to the UK. On 20-23 June 2016 we will be in the dynamic, confident and expanding city of Birmingham. Mark the date in your diary, and look out for further announcements in September 2015.

“ For me, this was the best conference that I have attended at the RCOG. The programme was well balanced, with probably an obstetric bias which suited me fine, but the gynaecology sessions were also topical and well presented.” Annual Professional Development delegate, 2014

Expert Witness: Excellence in Report Writing

Expert Witness: Courtroom Skills

16 July 2015

NEW 16 September 2015

NEW

The RCOG has teamed up with Bond Solon, the UK’s leading legal training company for non-lawyers to offer specialist training for obstetricians and gynaecologists acting as expert witnesses. This course explores what lawyers and the courts expect and require from an expert’s report. Delegates will be taught how to assess their own and other experts’ reports and produce, quickly and consistently, reports that are court compliant and can withstand cross-examination. Many experts create their own report writing style or adopt other people’s generalised formats, having rarely received constructive feedback from lawyers on what is required from their written evidence. This is a small group course so space is strictly limited to 16 places.

The witness box is a lonely place. Many experts feel they are on trial, standing in the dock rather than giving independent testimony to assist the Court. Often, experts are unfamiliar with this environment, as few cases go to a full trial. But a poor performance can undermine confidence and credibility. Courtroom Skills is an intensive and highly practical training day. First we examine the theory, practice and procedure of giving evidence, demystifying the process. Then delegates are cross-examined on a case study they prepare on their field of expertise. A professional trainer, who is an experienced lawyer, gives constructive feedback on delegates’ witness box presentation. This is a small group course so space is strictly limited to 16 places.

Management of Multiple Pregnancy

16 November 2015

NEW Who should attend?

The incidence of multiple pregnancy is rising, secondary to the use of assisted reproductive techniques. Multiple pregnancy is associated with increased maternal and perinatal mortality and morbidity. The maternal mortality is 2.5 times higher in twin, compared to singleton, pregnancies. Almost 50% of twin pregnancies deliver before 37 weeks’ gestation. Many clinicians who are confident when managing complicated singleton pregnancies feel uneasy caring for women with multiple pregnancy. A recent survey has shown that the level of familiarity with the NICE guideline on “Antenatal Management of Multiple Pregnancy” is poor and implementation suboptimal. This course will provide a comprehensive update on the management of multiple pregnancy and all sessions will have dedicated time for audience interaction.

College Tutors’ Meeting

Clinical Directors’ Forum

9 October 2015

5 November 2015

The College Tutors’ Meeting provides an excellent opportunity for College Tutors to come along to the College and hear about what is happening in education and training nationally. Updates are given by RCOG Advisors and Officers on important College initiatives in O&G education and training and workshops are provided on various topics of interest to College Tutors, some practical and others more exploratory. There will also be the opportunity to ask the experts’ advice on current issues in O&G training – you will be asked to send in any questions you may have in advance – and the ePortfolio Coordinator will be available to assist you during the lunch hour break.

The purpose of this biannual meeting is to ensure a continuous dialogue regarding what is important in delivering clinical director responsibilities. Using this forum, the College increases awareness of national policies and clinical directors are able to tell us the impact of such policies.Together we are able to develop the College activities agenda.
