ythologia Fennica ("Ukon pakka" in Finnish) is a Tarot deck and 300-pages long guidebook to Finnish mythology. The myths in major arcana are from Kalevala, the finnish national epic. The first edition of the Kalevala appeared in 1835, compiled and edited by Elias Lönnrot on the basis of the epic folk poems he had collected in Finland and Karelia. The minor arcana is inspired by Finnish folklore and old tales. There are so many interesting creatures in Finnish folklore! Differend kinds of elfs and fairys are introduced in these unique Tarot cards. The author, Susanna Salo has been studying Finnish mythology for years. She collected information from The Finnish Literature Society’s archive houses, where a large collection of old folklore is being kept. In these archive houses , there are approximately 100 000 hand written or typewrited cards. About 10 000 of these cards are about these supernatural creatures, places, animals and events. There are creatures of water, earth, household deitys, witches, ghosts, false arrival apparitions and of course the Finnish devil, Piru. Susanna has based about 50 cards on these old mythological creatures. Mythologia Fennica is following classical Tarot system of 78 cards. Susanna has written a 300 pages long guidebook for the deck. Half of the book is based on her studies in mythological creatures and storys from Kalevala. The other half is her own intuitive vision of the meanings as these stories were Tarot cards. Susanna has also painted the pictures of the deck. Four pictures are painted by her dear friend, Laura Kautovaara. The deck and the guidebook were published in Finnish in 2017 by Salakirjat (www.salakirjat.net). The English edition will be published in 2018.

From Dreams to Mythologia Fennica Ta rot

Susanna Salo, what is your spiritual background? – I have been interested in magic tricks and supernatural world since I was a little girl. Witches, trolls, ghosts etc. were my favorite subjects as early as when I was in primary school.

4

I borrowed The Witch's Handbook from the school library, read it in the evenings and didn’t dare to sleep if the lights were off. Still, I had to read the book and watch all the ghost stories and TV shows around the subject. I studied the subject area later by reading occultist literature and, of course, horror stories, especially those with ghosts involved. That's how it started.

the suicide had happened. The lady seemed to stay at the house when I moved away later.

– Some friends and relatives who have passed away have come to meet me in my dreams. I have also lived in a house where a man had committed a suicide by hanging himself upstairs. He seemed to wander in the house, especially at night, and I also saw frightening dreams there. The phenomena and the bad dreams ended when I eventually moved away.

Once when I was visiting my friend’s old farm, I had a dream again. In that dream I was being showed the yard and the main building, and told that there was something wrong with the house which is why it needed cleansing. The following day my friend told me that there was a gravestone of a small child in the attic. There was also a so called “death board” in the house, where people, in the old days, used to write the deceased’s name and the time of his/her birth and death. Next to the board was a nail on the wall, where my friend used to keep his keys. The keys, however, wouldn’t stay on the nail but dropped on the floor by themselves. He also told that in one room a window had dropped on the floor at night and a cabinet had fallen by itself.

I also received information, in my dream, that I would soon be moving to a house where an old lady had died. For about a week from this dream I was offered an apartment for rent, and indeed there had lived an elderly lady who had died there, after living in the house for a very long time. She appeared in my dreams occasionally, later only around the day of her death. However, the dreams weren’t as frightening and heavy in this house as they had been in the house where

We talked about all this far into the night. We were wondering what to do about it and finally decided to

sleep over night and see if we get the answer during the sleep. At night I saw a dream of a candle burning under a certain birch tree. The dream seemed to be the answer we had hoped for, so we decided to take the gravestone under the tree. The gravestone was of a deceased child, who was born in the 40's around Midsummer and had passed away at the age of exactly one year. When this event took place, it also happened to be Midsummer.

About Nature Spirits – I have seen dreams about Nature Spirits, too. Once a Water Spirit took me to a door at the bottom of the sea. He expressed his concern about the state of the Baltic Sea and other seas as well, and asked for help. I remembered the dream later, when I was studying the Finnish folklore archives, and found out that, according to the old beliefs, there was a door to the Vetehinen’s dwelling at the bottom of the sea. (In Finnish myt-

" I have been guided through my dreams all along the project. " hology Vetehinen is a Water Spirit, High Elf). In another dream I saw a special corridor with the stairs leading deep under ground. I went down the stairs and there was Maahinen to meet me at the other end of the stairs. (Maahinen is a Ground Spirit, an elf who lives underground). He led me through tunnel-like corridors, and I was also taken to the dining room where they served mud balls and bruce resin. I didn’t eat anything though. Later I found out that, according to the old beliefs, you shouldn’t eat or drink anything in the land of Maahinen or you will stay there forever. Maahinen gave me a needle and some yarn, and some kind of a dagger or a sword, and then took me back to the surface.

About Psychic Vision - I see a lot of premonition dreams that come true later. They usually come up before major changes in my life and give information on what will happen and advice on how to best act in those situations. They have been of great help and support in my life.

Past lives - I'm not quite sure whether these are my previous lives or something else, but in many of my dreams there have been strong indications towards spiritualistic sessions in the late 1800s. Sometimes I see a mansion with paintings of medium sessions on the walls. Some of the

paintings present fierce scenes of a medium in a trance, ectoplasm pouring out of his mouth, and a spirit materializing next to him. Personally, I don’t believe in ectoplasm at all, and I think that part was just a fraud. Last autumn I had a dream with interior and furniture from the same era. I was in an old bookstore, and there was a large round table in the store. On the table there were papers that advertised sessions by medium Susanna Salo. I was looking at those announcements, being surprised for the fact that some medium had the same name as mine. Then a woman came to me and told me about the courses that would be arranged soon. She said: "You don’t need to take these courses because you already have all the knowledge from your previous life." Then I felt something behind me and as I turned around, I saw an old woman standing there, looking at me kindly, and she clearly had something to say to me. There were other people, too, behind her, all coming in to the store. Now that I think about the dream, those "medium sessions and courses" were probably my Mythologia Fennica Tarot courses where we gather around a big table with my students, very much the same way as in the dream.

Creating the Mythologia Fennica Tarot Deck How do you think these spiritual experiences have contributed

Ääretön EXTRA • august 2018

to the creation of the Mythologia Fennica Tarot Deck? Did you experience guidance? How did it appear to you? - Yes, I’ve experienced strong guidance. I have received guidance and advice through my dreams for every new steps for the past ten years. Inspired by these powerful dreams, I’ve gathered an enormous amount of information about the subject. In fact, the dreams told me to study and gather all this information. In one dream I was also given an empty book with blank, white pages to fill with my own writings. I also had a dream of a library with bookshelf after bookshelf full of material about nature spirits. When I went to the Finnish Folklore Archives many years later, I realized a clear connection between the library of my dreams and the Archives. Except for the fact that I saw the dreams of the library five years before I entered the Archives for the first time. I also received strong guidance when I had been working on my notes of the Deck for five years. I was being told to "come out of the closet", so I set up a Facebook group, invited 60 friends to join the group and told them about the project. Gradually the project became more public and pretty quickly I got a publisher, too, even though I didn’t offer the script to anyone. This happened at the Pagan Autumn Fair, where I had been invited to demonstrate Mythologia Fennica Deck. I have been guided through my dreams all along the project. If I have neglected the project and haven’t been working on it for a whi-

le, I start to dream about unfinished homework and being constantly far behind my school mates. Before I started to paint the cards of the deck, I had a dream of loads and loads of paintings to be done. In the dream I realized that at this rate I wouldn’t be able to finish the cards before I die. This dream was a strong driving force for me for a long time because there was an overwhelming need to get the job done before the ominous sounding "death".

Plans for the Future How well has your Deck been selling? – Apparently well! It's available at many stores, in addition to myself and the publisher, Salakirjat. The first edition was larger than usually, 2000 copies, and the second edition will be needed soon. Has the sales responded to your expectations, or exceeded them? – I didn’t really expect anything, as this is my first book. I had nothing to compare to, in advance.

Will Mythologia Fennica be translated into other languages? – We’ll see what the future brings. Of course it would be wonderful to have it translated to other languages as well. Do you have any thoughts on the following books? – Yes, in fact I’m currently working on a new project. I’m not going to reveal the subject of my new book yet, but it may come out this year. What topics will it handle? – The theme is related to folklore. In a way, this is a continuation of Mythologia Fennica, but the research work is still incomplete.

The ”Crossborder” Susanna Salo’s Mythologia Fennica Deck and the book won so-called ”Crossborder (supernatural) book of the year” public voting award in May 2018. The competition is organized yearly by Finnish ULTRA-magazine. Ì

From Quantum Physics to Energy Healing - A Physicist’s Journey to Mind and Healing By Johanna Blomqvist, Ph.D. What is the “energy” transmitted in energy healing? What can science and research say about energy healing? Doesn’t modern science rule out phenomena like this? Does energy healing work and, if so, how? Physicist Johanna Blomqvist’s book will give answers to these questions. Astonishing accounts of healings omitted by mainstream media led her to a journey that is still continuing. In the book, she tells about her path to energy healing and her own extraordinary experiences. The obvious question was how to fit these experiences to the scientific model she had learned. Energy healing and such topics as subtle energy, the effect of mind on healing and remote healing are usually perplexing to those used to an everyday materialistic worldview. In the book, energy healing is approached from the viewpoint of known modern science. Could quantum physics give answers to energy healing? After all, one could say that according to quantum physics, we are all one and the same vibrating energy at the subatomic level. Besides quantum physics, the book also addresses the questions of mind and consciousness. The book has been written as an aid to those who wish to broaden their horizons or are already practicing energy healing, yet could use tools for telling others about it. The book is also meant for everyone who may be seeking support from complementary medicine.
