Valeria Parisi, the Gregarious

PWA is an international hub in the heart of Rome where ideas and values, tradition and innovation, diversity, culture and professionalism meet and intersect. On our journey into the future our travel companions are respect, ethics, and a sense of social responsibility.

Dear Members and Friends, A few days ago I attended a very interesting seminar promoted by ValoreD about the development of Global Agility and International Mindset. These two skills represent values that are extremely useful in today's world, an increasingly VUCA world characterized by Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity. I think that PWA gives its members an interesting taste of an International Mindset and I always observe with great pleasure how our members find the international expression of the association particularly valuable. We will always continue to invest on this aspect of our association. Our Global Social environment gives PWA members the opportunity to experience the effectiveness and positivity of an intercultural approach to professional and social relationships. In this we want to support the achievement of one of the objectives of our social year: the Grow mantra. In order to grow, we we work hard to let PWA’s Global Agility help all of us to think, act and create value in an interconnected world that is volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous.

PWA OCTOBER Conference

24 October at 19.30 at Grand Hotel Palace LeadHer - EXECUTIVE PRESENCE FOR WOMEN OF INFLUENCE

Executive presence is easy to recognize but not so easy to define. It is an intangible quality, a mix of skills, a kind of magnetism that influences people and simply conquers. People with executive presence are admired for their leadership, respected for their authority, appreciated for their ability to win the confidence of those around them. Gravitas is a core characteristic of executive presence. From Latin, it means “substance”. It’s not about performance, it's about what you signal about confidence; acting decisively, projecting vision and demonstrating emotional intelligence. Because of its association with power, and the fact that men are typically perceived as having greater dominance than women, gravitas is a notion we tend to think of as a male quality. For women to appear powerful, they have to be more aware of how to act, how to communicate and how to look. Act – as women are often accused of being too emotional, a woman who can remain emotionally calm in stressful situations projects competence and confidence. Communicate - body language is a priority: how to enter a room, where to stand, how to sit. Women can be perceived as being more powerful when their body language shows openness and expansiveness, assuming high-power poses. Look - appearance counts, largely as a filter through which your communication skills and gravitas become more apparent. Women should look the part without being distracting, sending the right cues with their hair, clothes, makeup and jewelry. In conclusion, executive presence is an indispensable tool for women who want to expand their influence and build successful careers. It forces them to master an intricate balance between softness and strength, as women with gravitas find a way of being "nice" with having a "can-do, will-do" attitude. It is a great challenge in the name of authenticity. 4

About Our Speakers

Laura Cerioli, Donatella Lorato and Silvia Pettinicchio Krebs LAURA CERIOLI, DONATELLA LORATO, SILVIA PETTINICCHIO KREBS: we could describe ourselves as professionals with over 60 years of cumulative experience in the fields of HR, marketing, fashion, and etiquette. But most of all, we are gen. X-ers. who lived through feminism, yuppieism, sexual discrimination, motherhood, entrepreneurship, and now the so called liquid society. The module on EXECUTIVE PRESENCE is part of a broader project, LeadHer, a spin off of our academic and consulting careers, a project of the heart thought by women of influence to influence women. LeadHer aims at helping women lead with charisma, assertiveness, style and the I-FACTOR (ITALIAN FACTOR), a mix of empathy, emotional intelligence, femininity, self confidence, freedom, courage and strength. LeadHer is a journey of self discovery, awareness and empowerment through authenticity.

the importance of

presence 9 Tips for Women Leaders to Convey Executive Presence Much of how women (and men) are perceived as leaders is tied absolutely to the way they communicate. In a male-dominated environment, particularly at senior management level, it is imperative that women learn to speak up and demand their place at the table. Without killer communication skills, women will fail to distinguish themselves. My company is on a June fiscal year, so we’re having our annual round of employee evaluations now, and mine was (again) pretty discouraging. I’m really good at what I do, with great technical skills, which my boss acknowledged. But he also said I’m not ready to move up to the next level of management because I lack “executive presence.”

Can executive presence be learned? My company is on a June fiscal year, so we’re having our annual round of employee evaluations now, and mine was (again) pretty discouraging. I’m really good at what I do, with great technical skills, which my boss acknowledged. But he also said I’m not ready to move up to the next level of management because I lack “executive presence.”

Executive Presence: What Is It, Why You Need It And How To Get It “Executive presence!” It’s a term that’s often shrouded in mystique, whispered as if it’s something magical, and many people struggle to understand it. Executive presence is critical, but it doesn’t need to be mysterious. Most importantly, executive presence is a skill, not a trait — that means it’s something you can cultivate and build. Here’s a straightforward demystification of executive presence — what it is, why you need it and how to get it.

How to Measure Executive Presence in Leaders Many times when we ask our clients to define what executive presence means to them, the short answer is typically something like “I know it when I see it.” Executive presence is difficult to describe but is more easily recognized in a room full of people. It’s a leader’s “wow factor.” When a leader walks into a room they instantly attract intense, positive attention.

Executive Presence: The Missing Link Between Merit and Succes

You can have the experience and qualifications of a leader, but without executive presence, you won't advance. EP is an amalgam of qualities that true leaders exude, a presence that telegraphs you're in charge or deserve to be. Articulating those qualities isn't easy, however. Based on a nationwide survey of college graduates working across a range of sectors and occupations, Sylvia Hewlett and the Center for Talent Innovation discovered that EP is a dynamic, cohesive mix of appearance, communication, and gravitas. While these elements are not equal, to have true EP, you must know how to use all of them to your advantage. Filled with eye-opening insights, analysis, and practical advice for both men and women, mixed with illustrative examples from executives learning to use the EP, Executive Presence will help you make the leap from working like an executive to feeling like an executive.

Valeria Parisi, the Gregarious

F

or Valeria Parisi, born in Naples, an only child by physician father and maths professor mother with Calabrian roots, life held responsibilities, or so she thought. Her father didn’t treat her like an only child so her gregarious nature influenced her choices, aided by her mother, who she also considered a friend. But coming up to expectations by her father of doing something important with her life, although not necessarily following a career in the medical profession, also influenced her drive to be among the top scholars, first at high school specializing in classical studies, then winning a Soroptimist scholarship (http://www.soroptimisteurope.org) an organisation which helps to facilitate deserving women for higher

education or advanced vocational training. From responsible child to responsible adult. Whilst in Milan as a college guest near Bocconi University, together with 100 youngsters from all over Italy, on her own initiative Valeria sat for the entrance exam, passing with flying colours. Leaving the family nest changed her life and she became aware of a different dimension. At the age of 20, Valeria’s father let her take care of his real estate in Milan, where by herself she found a tenant and rented her own flat applying the methodology she’d learnt during her studies at Bocconi, graduating in Business Economics, and replicated buying and selling other properties of her father in the south, transforming them into vacation homes. Particularly successful results

come from a house in Ogliastro Marina in Salerno province, and in Fregene off the Roman coast. Valeria, who since childhood had traveled to and fro between Italy and the U.S., had always been fascinated by everything Anglo-Saxon; with a cousin in Florida, her father operated on at Houston, and with a professional experience in the U.S. Losing both her parents at the age of 36, she felt the onus of responsibility even more, with a desire to continue her father’s dream in some way. She discovered that nothing was static in the U.S. and when she took a vacation there three or four years ago, she used her knowledge to set up an office in Florida. This decision stemmed from her own conversion from being employed as a controller in the corporate world, to becoming a businesswoman in her own right as CPA and Auditor. After this initial challenge in 2009, she felt it natural, progressing through marriage and motherhood. In retrospect, she could no longer reverse her decision, happy to manage her own processes following her autonomous and independent nature. She also feels extremely lucky to have been continuously supported in her choices by her husband Massimo, a frequent cavaliere in her public appearances. Valeria realised, thanks to her experience at Bocconi university, that she could learn from new international approaches, fruit of different cultures. She also realised once she had been abroad that in many ways, Italian society appeared provincial. Via new stimulus and knowledge, appreciation of difference, Valeria is convinced that growth is achieved only when one is able to accept different cultures. Another very important feature of Valeria’s life is the ability to balance her roles as wife and mother, and since her daughter Stefania’s birth she basks in the happiness her family brings. Besides constantly supporting Valeria, her husband also contributes to her daughter’s security, bestowing on her the advantages of reflection and thoughtfulness, which

flow into a wisdom rare in today’s youngsters. On the other hand Valeria shares her weaknesses, teaching Stefania to overcome the difficulties she herself encounters, and because she is impulsive and emotional, despite an element of self control, she makes no secret that she is not the perfect mother! She’s only human after all! Like all Italians, particularly Neapolitans, Valeria loves cooking and entertaining, her favourites being spaghetti alle vongole and those incredibly sweet babàs! True to her gregarious nature she loves music and dancing. And of course if we consider her origins and those romantic places like Sorrento, Ischia, Capri, Anacapri, it’s no surprise to find that she loves the sea and the captivating smell it conjures up as she remembers herself a young girl windsurfing the waves. Unsurprisingly her favourite colour is orange for its vitaminic energy charge. At BAA-Bocconi Alumni Association, where Valeria has been Area Leader for twelve years, a few years ago fellow alumni Anna Kroymann mentioned her ties with PWA, as board member under Carol Bourg’s presidency. Valeria’s thirst for new international people brought her to appreciate the networking opportunities between the two Associations, going on to organise a joint venture ConneXion and a Christmas party. As Social Director for PWA this year, we can look forward to some great events under Valeria’s expert helm. She appreciates PWA’s transparency and energy plus the priority PWA gives to change. She hopes to see more men integrated into PWA. She is convinced that openness to the men’s world would enrich PWA, not only reducing the gender gap but also helping to reciprocate a better understanding of diversity itself. By subtly evoking our motto “the People We Are” Valeria feels that priority needs to be given to the energy applied to change that only an international approach is capable of achieving.

September conferenc The PWA September Conference was a perfect and harmonious demonstration of corality and women empowering and supporting one another. Dress for Success provides women who have lost their job – and sometimes dignity – with training to gain more self confidence and tangible means to apply for a job, such as help with CV and cover letter. Part of the training package is also professional acvice on how to dress in order to give a self-assured impression of themselves. Rome Chapter founder Francesca Jones introduced the concept to the audience and was accompanied by her mother and supporter, Teresa Ferrarese, Filomena de Iulio, an image consultant and Emanuela, one of the clients who was able to find a new job in a different field and completely re-invent herself and her life. It was inspiring and reassuring to listen to these women talk about the activities of Dress for Success and the successes they have accomplished so far. They encourage everyone to support them by donating time in volunteering, but also donating clothes and accessories to their inventory. www.dressforsuccess.com

21st WIN Conference in Rome

My Experience by Sabine Schuh What can I say? The WIN Conference was an indescribable experience! Women (and some men) from all over the world come together to exchange information, different points of view, experiences, tips & tricks in various fields and a lot of laughter and hugs as well! The three day event circled around “Trust Discover - Create” with around 100 speakers who shared their expertise with over 500 participants, all together exploring this year’s theme from different angles; from a scientific point of view, through the business lens and even by experiencing ourselves through art and music! We had plenary sessions with world class speakers, such as - Kristin Engvig, the inspiring founder of WIN - Jude Currivan, a Cosmologist and Author, made my facilitator’s heart sing when she illuminated us with the latest scientific evidences that our universe is literally a cosmic hologram in which all is connected allowing us to influence our reality on a much broader scale than people can normally imagine - Ralitsa Vassileva, a CNN anchor who shared 23 years breaking news with her global audience, with a moving example of how going beyond your fears and being yourself in a calm and humble way can bring you to the very top - Alexandre Pachulski, an expert on talent management, taught us how to explore and approach artificial intelligence from a human point of view and - Alexandra Pascalidou, a Swedish activist, showed us how to use a difficult past to create a powerful future.

14

There were also some local highlights who shared their wisdom, like Paolo Boccarelli, Dean of LUISS Business School of Rome and Gabrielle Kluck, who works for the World Food Programme. Even two PWA members were in the front row, Moira Spencer who offered her services as a coach and Laura Rizzi who shared her story in the Story Forum. We enjoyed interesting workshops which added some practice to theory: - Monique Blokzyl helped us so professionally to find the “impactful pitch”, - Agnieszka Majszczyk gave us some useful practical tips on Priority Management, - Lenka Mrazova invited us to explore the connection between our natural female cycle and our efficiency in the business environment, - Margaretha Lesman rocked the stage sharing her HypnoBirthing. Effective networking events and a lovely Gala Dinner are worth mention, but the most wonderful experience for me was to assist the event from start to finish. WIN Staff Dominique, Claire, Juliana, Estela, Vegard and Sanjukta were extraordinary and together with the other PWA members, Angela Carfa, Gaia Marano, Hanna Suni, Maria Longo, Laura Rizzi and Margrit Mau (left photo) plus volunteers from all over the world we gave our best to be of service for everyone. I had a wonderful time, experiencing synchronisation at its best, as I shared insights, challenges, breakthroughs and fun with so many wonderful women and men with whom hopefully I will gain some lasting friendships.I know for sure that I want to participate again and advise you to treat yourself to this experience. It is truly fantastic and not to be missed!

My Experience by Angela Carfa

How beautiful could a being be? My mind formulated this sentence during the WIN Conference plenary sessions and workshops. The same question, repeatedly asked at the samba rhythm, is the text of a song by Caetano Veloso. Go and listen to it. You will feel the desire to sing it aloud while dancing. The body can not help but participate and the mind to imagine. The same thing happens at the WIN conference: you are continuously asked what can you do more to improve your life, your work and the community in which you live. I want to tell you about three experiences that I lived, all of them conveyed by music and body movements. Miha Pogacnick (center photo), founder of Ecoculture, taught us the art of heart storming. It combines intellect and emotions in order to practice the art of listening and dialogue. He did it by playing the Siciliana by Bach. He went from playing the violin to writing on the blackboard, he was impetuous. He played and then represented the melody on the blackboard using different colors and progressively moving from the inflexibility of the cusps to the harmony of the circle. Nilima Bath, (right photo) Shakti leadership book’s author, and founder of Shakti Fellowship in India, taught us the dance of the five elements. I am sure all of us who where dancing, experienced which of the five elements made us feel at ease: earth, water, fire, air or space. It happened to me doing the water dance. I could say I’ve experienced a nice feeling of harmony, a state of flow.

Kaouthar Darmuni, Gender and Media Professor at the Netherlands University, conducted an amazing workshop. The theme was: what can we do to correct the prevailing culture in the media, which tend to sexualize women’s body? We experienced the Divine Dance, movements and postures useful to realize the alignment between head, heart and belly, aiming to perceive our feminine capital. It was very exciting to learn techniques that Kaouthar learned long time ago in Tunisia directly from her grandmother and her mother. These have all been very intense experiences, associated with many new connections and meetings with people from all over the world. I would like to mention some of them. Stella Francis, who shared her dream during the plenary session: to empower Nigerian women, still obstructed by the political situation; Ditta Sandico, an eco-sustainable fashion designer, who creates clothing with a fiber produced in the Philippines, involving local communities and recovering native production methods; Bettina Palazzo, engaged with her consulting firm to spread the culture of respect and to propose models of behavior to overcome gender bias. In the end, let me give grateful thanks to all my volunteer travel companions, with whom I shared a rich and fun week and of course to Kristin Engvig and to the whole WIN Conference core team for their incessant work, always looking for inspiring experiences and testimonies.

PWA’s success as an Association is due to the participation of its members: professional women who, over the years, have contributed to its growth, its credibility and reputation. Each woman, through her membership, has helped to make PWA a special entity, leaving a trace for a new member to follow. The PWA Board decides to nominate every year, with the support and participation of all members, a PWA WOMAN OF THE YEAR. This special woman, who’s example other women are willing to respect and perhaps emulate, will receive our public appreciation, testified by a gift membership for the following PWA Year. She will have the opportunity to invite 1 free guest to PWA conferences during the next year and also receives a gift invitation to our June Party including a celebration cake in her honour!
