PWA is an international hub in the heart of Rome where ideas and values, tradition and innovation, diversity, culture and professionalism meet and intersect. On our journey into the future our travel companions are respect, ethics, and a sense of social responsibility.

Dear Members and Friends, Since the conclusion of our recent human rights joint venture with Fondazione Adkins Chiti Donne in Musica (FACDIM) with patronage by the U.N. and European Parliament, our last board meeting revealed how other associations are expressing a desire to interact with PWA. Worth mention are FIDAPA celebrating 90 years with MUSAico 90, an inclusion project (see information in newsletter); Gruppo Minerva (FederManager) with a 6 point manifesto. Other PWA initiatives are ongoing like the Business Mastermind Group or WINGS Lab, a series of peer to peer mentoring meetings conducted by special projects director, Angela Carfa. Membership director, Forencia Barbieri in order to get to know each other better, invites new members to tell their story to be published in our January issue. As we witness the growth of PWA via its new members, we realise just how much each individual has to give in order to strengthen our presence and reputation in Rome. Christmas is traditionally a time of giving to others, but year round PWA by its very mission, is already a forum for sharing information. Expertise, support, referrals are the gifts we exchange constantly to leverage business acumen. We hope you will come forward in the new year with your contributions and ideas. There are openings on our Board for a new Secretary and Newsletter editor. In the meantime, a lot of work has gone into our conference and social programmes this season for which we thank our board and team. Member participation is the essence of our success. As we prepare to celebrate this Christmas and look forward to a gratifying and prosperous new year, let’s think of how we can spread the word about what we have to offer, by encouraging new members to boost our ranks in PWA. Happy holidays!

around the world by Hanna Suni Markeing Consultant www.hamedesign.com It’s the most wonderful time of the year. For a couple of weeks every year the world takes on a magic glow, people seem merrier and even winter somehow feels cosy. At least to us in the Western world, used to celebrating Christmas in our usual way. But there are traditions that are less known and perhaps not connected to Christmas. I've piecked a few that MoMondo listed in an article last year.

Love Christmas, but think it could be improved by a spot of rollerblading? If the answer is yes, visit Caracas, Venezuela this year. Every Christmas Eve, the city’s residents head to church in the early morning – so far, so normal – but, for reasons known only to them, they do so on roller skates. This unique tradition is so popular that roads across the city are closed to cars so that people can skate to church in safety, before heading home for the less-than-traditional Christmas dinner of ‘tamales’ (a wrap made out of cornmeal dough and stuffed with meat, then steamed).

In the first week of December, young men dress up as the Krampus (especially on the eve of St. Nicholas Day) frightening children with clattering chains and bells.

by Valerie Baxter Newsletter Consultant

R

oman born Valentina Sarnari with parents from nearby regions Abruzzo and Umbria, common origins of many Romans in our densely populated city, is a CPA with an uncommon specialisation: “crisi d’impresa” or Business Crisis. Default, insolvency or bankruptcy are the nightmare words in the dictionary of any entrepreneur going through hard times, and wisely Valentina’s expertise consists in prevention, rather than cure. Valentina is also a qualified auxiliary consultant to the magistrate in banking matters and offers her support in

judicial functions as member of the Equal Opportunity Commission to the Order of Accountants in Rome. Valentina’s big sister is a lawyer specialised in family law and their united strength as professionals in the same studio helps to sustain the patrimonial issues involved in divorce cases. The motivational aspect is also imbibed with labels like “personal failure” or “marriage default” and Valentina believes that evaluation of behavioural practice both inside and outside the workplace contributes via an alert system to the prevention of bad outcomes.

With husband Venice Film Festival

Married to a colleague in the same practice, again common as relationships go, but by today’s statistics of successful marriages, Valentina has a winning card! A happy marriage, blessed with the ideal son and daughter progeny, different in character but similar in tastes, she contentedly boasts family ties and traditions linked to the ancestral home in Umbria. The medieval feasts, historical places of interest, and Umbrian cuisine attract her like a magnet year after year. She loves cooking (cappelletti in brodo for Christmas) and the smell of liquorice and wild fennel; the undergrowth in the forest, and the brilliant green of the mountain plains of Val Badia in the summer. Valentina reminisces running madly through extensive fields of daisies, usually covered by snow when she goes skiing on the slopes with her family. Born 23rd December with a winter wedding by choice on 6th December, and honeymoon in Baden bei Wien, Austria Valentina is a cool character. Yet we are not to be fooled. A passion shared with her husband for theatre and cinema makes her a frequent flyer to Venice Film Festival. She enjoys socialising in her free time and loves to visit new places. Although content in her own company, she really is a “people person”. Several years ago stimulated by what is known as the Third Sector, Valentina became a master in fund raising in the ecclesiastical sphere and not only. Whilst not involved in the act of fund raising itself,

Valentina's beloved Narni

she dedicates her time to those who do, for the improvement of problematic nonprofits, particularly regarding scientific research. She was introduced to PWA by colleague and Social director, Valeria Parisi, who told her about the different experiences of members. Happy to share her own story with others, she recently joined, assiduously frequenting PWA with enthusiasm. Self criticism is one of Valentina’s traits, as she studies her own behaviour when in the company of others. Fascinated by people, she has a desire to improve women’s rights in the workplace, but feels these can be achieved only by the diffusion, coordination and reciprocation of a shared culture by men and women, conscious of their differences. Valentina believes that a large number of men are sensitive to projects of emancipation but they also suffer women’s behaviour which puts them at a disadvantage. She would like to eliminate the ill-at-ease feeling of men by working together leveraging reciprocal diversity to create opportunities for women and young people void of prevarication and violence. This behaviour would increase the quota of men helping to further equal opportunities. Valentina, throughout her career has earned her nickname of “equalizer”, not only by deftly balancing the books, but by going where angels fear to tread in divorce litigation in an endeavour to save the patrimony of individuals from dire straits. It’s all about sensitivity. This Christmas let’s take a leaf out of her book!

The Art of

I

nspired by a new Netflix production of “Mowgli”, from Disney classic of “the Jungle Book” based on Rudyard Kipling’s famous novel, I was fascinated by life’s contradictions in attitudes to inclusion and generosity. Seeing the film with different eyes also served as a prompt to consider the art of giving. It is one of life's paradoxes that we limit the power of our own giving by having an expectation of getting something in return. How often do you expect back from the person you gave something to a gift of a similar or greater value? Is this true giving or merely an unvoiced expectation of an exchange of similar goods? This is an ego based form of giving. It is giving with an expectation of something in return. In reality, this is not giving at all but a veiled form of barter. If, through the act of giving, you feel that you are somehow lessened then the gift was not truly given from your heart. Sometimes, just being recognised by receiving a word of thanks is all we need for our heart to mellow. How many times is our generosity misunderstood?

Giving

by Valerie Baxter, Newsletter consultant

The intention behind giving is most important. The intention should always be to create happiness for both the giver and the receiver. In ancient China, Lao Tsu wrote "Kindness in words creates confidence. Kindness in thinking creates profoundness. Kindness in Giving Creates Love.” It’s also exponential: If you want to experience more joy, give joy to others, if you want more love, learn to give love, if you want attention and appreciation, learn to give appreciation to others. These are some of life’s most precious gifts and they don’t cost you anything. With our changing economic times, everyone is asking for help in some form. Yet there are as many reasons to give as there are ways to give. Generosity is a choice that feels right and joyful and comes from believing you have enough to share. Let’s meditate on gifts we all have that can benefit others:

Give of Your Talents. Give someone an hour of coaching or a golf lesson, perhaps child care. Give things. Give what you don’t use or need to charity. Your junk is someone else’s treasure. Give blood. Save a life. Give someone a lift. Give of yourself. Make someone feel loved, special and appreciated with a visit, phone call, email, text or card. Give a hand made gift. Give praise, gratitude and appreciation. This creates heart-toheart connections. When you encounter a quotation or a good news story, pass it on with a personal “thinking of you” note. This is spirit-lifting and can make someone’s day. Give a recommendation. Enrich someone’s life by sharing the discovery of a great blog, book, restaurant, product or service. The message you give is “This was a great find for me and I want to share it with you.”

Give forgiveness. Forgiveness offers healing to family, friends, coworkers and neighbors. Forgive yourself and others in spite of memories of unlovable times. Drop the story of what they did and what you did and the meaning you have given it. Give money. Giving away money is more difficult because it means less for you, but give money because others need it. Give money because we’re dependent on one another. Give an act of kindness. Kindness is the easiest and most abundant gift we have to give away. Open the door for the person behind you, return your grocery cart, make a dish for your neighbour. The list is endless. Kindness brings joy to the giver, receiver and anyone witnessing the act! Give love. It’s easy to love those who love us back. Challenge yourself to give love to those who deserve it the least. Make your love unconditional. Make the world a more loving place. Everyone will reap the benefits!

Give the gift of laughter. Laughter brings health and happiness to others. It offers physiological, psychological and spiritual benefits. Laugh loud and often with everyone. Give an invitation. Being invited to any kind of event means people want to be with you. When you invite someone into your life you are saying, “I want to spend time with you, you are important to me. Give affection. Appropriately offer a hug, a kiss on the cheek, a pat on the back, a touch on an arm or a tender look. We never lose the need for affection and acceptance. Touching heals emotional wounds. Give good advice If needed and wanted advice can be life-saving. Shared insights and wisdom is a precious gift. Give encouragement. When people are filled with doubt and fear they lack courage. When you inspire and motivate someone to act on their dreams, it can be life changing. You are making the world a better place.
