April – October 2023

Meet Port Coquitlam’s new Artist in Residence in Lions Park, Sarah Hin Ching U 余 余衍晴 (she/her). Sarah is a Chinese-Canadian emerging dance artist and choreographer whose movement practice is influenced by a plethora of styles including Latin Ballroom dance, contemporary dance, ballet and hip hop.

STRATUM DANCE WORKSHOP

Stratum is an outdoor performance installation combining dance and textile arts, in which these two elements shape and transform each other during the process and performance itself.

Professional dancer and City of Port Coquitlam Artist-in-Residence, Sarah Hin Ching U, will facilitate an introduction to the textile installation, and highlight the different elasticity, weight, width and length of the textile strips. The dancers will then give a demonstration and invite workshop participants to have a hands-on experience with the fabric using either freestyle movement or guided movement prompts. At the end of the workshop participants will be allowed free exploration time inside the nest.

During her residency, Sarah will be working on “Stratum” – a performance installation exploring moulting and skin-shedding processes, that interlaces dance and textile arts. Sarah will host open rehearsals, provide opportunities for emerging artists, facilitate movement exploration workshops with textiles for various ages, and eventually culminate all the research and community work into a performance at the end of her residency. Check portcoquitlam.ca/air for workshop dates and registration.
