Our readers and advertisers know that the Pittsburgh Catholic Newspaper takes seriously its responsibility to provide valuable insight, inspiration and information every week. Don’t take our word for it, take theirs: Excerpts from reader feedback, June 2018: v “Every week I read the Pittsburgh Catholic from the cover to the last page, because of the access it provides to the parishes and schools that have been so important throughout my life . . . There’s no other source that can do that!“ — Chris C., Robinson Township, PA v “ The reason I read the Pittsburgh Catholic is because there is news that I cannot read anywhere else . . .” — Gloria M., Pittsburgh, PA v “What I enjoy about the Pittsburgh Catholic is info. info. info. All the information concerning happenings throughout the Diocese, how else would we know what’s going on? . . . “ A second excerpt from this reader’s correspondence follows (July 2018): “ . . . Know that people read your paper devotedly each and every week. We are inspired by you, nourished by you, motivated by you and your work!” — Douglas M., Bethel Park, PA

WHY PRINT WORKS

Print should be in your marketing strategy. Seriously.

You don’t want to leave out those demographics that still like to read and are not yet comfortable in the digital world (yep, they are still out there).

Print still matters because: Print likes to hang out Magazines, newspapers, business cards, and sales incentives can stay on your desk for months while a digital ad will flash by you in a nanosecond. People tend to take more time to read something tangible unlike online where it is more of a scan. A captivating print ad will draw an audience in and keep them engaged longer than a digital ad. And let’s not forget the risk that viewers won’t click on the ad due to fear of spam and viruses. Paper likes to hang out for a while and there is no risk involved – just like any good mother-in-law.

We spend a great deal of time in front of laptops, tablets, and smartphones but there are still plenty of circumstances when print can, and will, trump digital advertising.

Print is tangible Perhaps one of the most important reasons is tangibility. Having it in your hands makes it real and more credible than those annoying pop-up ads that flash across

Don’t break out the black dress or suit just yet, print is still alive despite the rumors. While digital marketing certainly is the favored contender in the marketing arena, print is still a vital and powerful factor in the fight. Digital, social, and mobile are the current heroes but in order to achieve strong brand recognition you should be adding print to your marketing strategy.

your screen. You can hold it in your hands, view the vibrant colors and have plenty of time to digest the content. You trust it. Go ahead, take the office poll and see who remembers the ads they saw online today verses the ones they viewed in a print publication.

Hats off to Peugeot for this stellar print ad that involved an interactive air bag. The two-page spread asked the reader to hit the wheel and once this was done, a small air bag was released. Would you not look and play with this print ad all day? This is awesome and a great example of creative print.

WHY PRINT WORKS, Con’t

Print is great for target marketing Ad placement in a specialty magazine or trade magazine can quickly reach your target audience and save you from the guess work that is sometimes involved in digital advertising. Have you seen the new Old Spice print advertisement featured in GQ? This smokin’ hot ad presents the reader with a fully scented man-sized disposable paper blazer (for real). The red blazer is also loaded with the “luxurious smells of the Old Spice Captain”. You will never find this on a digital platform and be assured that those red blazers will be put to some very creative uses by the readers. Who will forget this genius idea?

Like us, those car manufacturers love print, and rightfully so. You will find them in trade, food, and specialty magazines that hits every demographic out there.

Over all, print still rocks. We believe the best way to get your brand out there is to take advantage of the many different marketing channels available. Finding the right balance will help you establish a strong brand recognition. Don’t discount print, just get creative with it and engage Group 2 for assistance in the effort! Want to learn more about how print can help you hit your numbers? Give Group 2 a call at 412-605-0834 and let’s get started.

Check out this unique print example from Lexus a few years back. They integrated digital with their print ad; watch this YouTube video [https:// www.youtube.com/watch?v=640v8yB cXg8&feature=youtu.be] to see how it was done. Would you take the time to interact with Lexus? Of course you would.

Prayer knows no boundaries for devout Catholics. The home, the car and, of course, the church are more popular places to offer praise to God. At least one person in Pittsburgh goes through a set of prayers during physical activity, which also happens to be his profession. Taylor Washington, a defender for the Pittsburgh Riverhounds soccer team, has many things running through his head during a game as he puts himself in the best position to help the team win. In doing so, he turns to God. “This might sound unconventional, but I’ll pray Hail Marys and Glory Be’s during the game,” he said. “I keep God at the center of my life, even during a game when I’m in

Isabella Speranza

Natalie, an eighth-grade student at the school in White Oak, is a compassionate young lady with a wonderful sense of humor who embodies the values of our Catholic faith. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Makovics of St. Angela Merici Parish, she began her Catholic school education in 3-year-old preschool and is now an honor student in advanced-level classes. In addition to her academic achievements, Natalie is involved in her school, parish and community. She plans to attend Serra Catholic High School in the fall.

Mark, through hard work and good choices, has grown in faith, intellect and service throughout his life. He is a faithful altar server, active in the parish youth group, member of the school academic team and participant in service projects. Mark, an eighth-grader, is the son of Phil and Beth Hewitt. He shows great respect and kindness toward others, and rarely seeks recognition. A student with integrity, Mark was chosen to portray Jesus in the school’s Living Stations of the Cross.

An eighth-grader, Isabella’s preparedness, participation and grades reveal her commitment to education. She recently received a first-place award at the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science for her project on the effects of sound on student concentration. Isabella is an orginal member of the school drama club, starring in several plays and its Silhouette Stations of the Cross. An outstanding role model, she helps out in elementary classrooms and volunteers for after-school events. The daughter of Francis and Jennifer Speranza, Isabella will attend Oakland Catholic High School in the fall.

The daughter of Benjamin and Pamela Butler, she is the first to volunteer for service projects and is always ready to help others.

The daughter of Michael and Anita Holland of St. Robert Bellarmine Parish, Cory is the high school’s Diocesan Youth Council representative and organized Stations of the Cross each Friday of Lent for two years. She is a founding member of the Hands of Christ, a student initiative dedicated to the works of mercy in the community. She plans to pursue a degree in elementary education at St. Vincent College.

FRIDAY, JANUARY 20, 2017 • SUPPLEMENT TO THE PITTSBURGH CATHOLIC

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 2016

I TRY TO TEACH IN AN INTERACTIVE STYLE. IT’S NOT ALWAYS ABOUT GRADES OR TEST SCORES, BUT IT IS ALWAYS ABOUT JOY IN LEARNING AND A DEEP CURIOSITY ABOUT THE WORLD WE LIVE IN. – SISTER RITA YEASTED, SFCC, PH.D. ’68 Dorothy Saladiak Distinguished Professor of English

Erin is a positive role model in eighth grade who perseveres with her academics, helps younger students and plays on the soccer team. She is consistently on the honor roll and is a talented artist and writer. Erin represented the school in the “Do the Write Thing” essay contest last year. She has collected donations for local food banks and helped gather library books for inner-city schools. The daughter of Patrick and Rebecca Egan of St. Mary Parish in Cecil, Erin’s kind demeanor makes her an exemplary student.

At Carlow, you’re not a number. You’re a name. You’re part of this tightknit community that’s committed to serving others. And that’s important to me. I want to be able to give back to people in need. I’ve learned I can make a real difference.

By JOHN FRANKO Staff Writer Sean Hannon didn’t know what to expect when he attended his first Catholic Men’s Fellowship Gathering in 2014. But what he found broke down the stereotype of a shrinking church in which men keep their faith to themselves and don’t take it into their families and workplaces. They were passionate about their faith and eager to share it with others. “It was a very uplifting and enPHOTO BY PAM GIANOGLIO couraging experience for me to be Bishop David Zubik waves to onlookers at the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Downtown surrounded by so many men at a Pittsburgh March 17. The speakers will include husband, father and author Devin Schadt; Dan Dupree, chairman of the board of the Coalition for Christian Outreach; Deacon Tom Lopus of SS. John and Paul Parish in Franklin Park/Marshall Township; Deacon John Beaulieu of the Christian Outreach Office of Franciscan University of Steubenville; and Kris Frank of Dirty Vagabond Ministries, which serves poor and inner-city youth. “We wanted speakers who could speak directly to issues that men are facing,” said Hannon, 26, who is a member of the board of the Catholic Men’s Fellowship of Pittsburgh.

When I was a kid, one of my favorite games was Mouse Trap, based on the inventions of a man named Rube Goldberg. According to Wikipedia, “A Rube Goldberg machine is a deliberately complex contraption in which a series of devices that perform simple tasks are linked together to produce a domino effect in which activating one device triggers the next device in the sequence.” It struck me that On Mission for The Church Alive! has been like a Rube Goldberg machine. People may not realize that, behind all the decisions that Bishop David Zubik will announce at the end of April, are countless moving parts. Of course, thousands of parishioners have been involved in consultations. Among the diocesan staff, multiple departments and secretariats, hours and hours of phone calls, conver-

The fever of March Madness has spread to Duquesne University in Pittsburgh’s Uptown neighborhood. However, it doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with basketball. Dr. Darlene Weaver, director of the Center for Catholic Faith and Culture, has created a unique field of 64 people who highlight the richness of Catholic intellectual tradition. In the same style of NCAA Tournament brackets, Weaver’s creation, called CIT Madness, allows participants to choose winners in head-to-head matchups. The CIT Madness bracket is open to all Duquesne students, faculty, staff and alumni.
