5’0” Midfielder Clay/Oregon, OH OWENS CAREER (2013) Groll started all 21 games as a freshman for the Express, while tallying three goals and three assists. She never tallied more than one goal or one assist in any game, while spreading out her six goals or assists over six contests. She ended the season tied for fifth on the team in assists.

PRIOR TO OWENS Groll played 62 career varsity games for Clay and also was a threeyear varsity letter winner. She had 11 career goals and 11 career assists. As a senior, she was Second Team All-TRAC, and she was Honorable Mention All-TRAC as a junior. Coached by Scott Wamer, Groll helped her team captured the Three Rivers Athletic Conference (TRAC) championship as a senior.

KENDYL CHRISTIAN #4 5’1” Forward/Midfielder Clay/Oregon, OH

OWENS CAREER (2013) Christian finished third on the team in goals scored (10), fourth in assists (4) and third in scoring (24) as a freshman. She had a seasonhigh two goals twice, while tallying a season-high two assists on Sept. 18 vs Cincinnati State. After missing the season’s first two games, Christian started 18 of 19 games as a freshman.

PRIOR TO OWENS Christian is a four-year varsity letter winner who played 67 varsity games at Clay. She had 23 career goals and 20 career assists. As a senior, she was First Team All-TRAC, Second Team All-District and First Team All-Press/Alan Miller Jeweler’s. As a junior, she was Second Team All-TRAC, and she was Second Team NWOHSSL D-I and Second Team All-District as a sophomore. She was a three-year team captain, two time team MVP (2011, 2012), one-time Most Inspirational Player (2011) and one-time Top Offensive Player (2010). Moreover, she was a four-time team captain. Coached by Scott Wamer, Christian helped her team captured the Three Rivers Athletic Conference (TRAC) championship as a senior.

PERSONAL Kendyl is the daughter of Greg and Jill Christian. She has one brother, Kacy, and one sister, Kylee. Kacy was a member of the Owens baseball team in 2001-02.

AMBER BURNETTE #5 5-3 Forward Oak Harbor/Graytown, OH

OWENS CAREER (2013) Burnette finished sixth on the team in scoring (11 points) and tied for fourth on the team in goals scored as a freshman. She totaled five goals and one assist, and she scored a season-high two goals against Lorain County on Sept. 21.

PRIOR TO OWENS Burnette was an offensive star at Oak Harbor High School under the direction of head coach Renee Goldstein. She was a four-year letter winner who scored 71 career goals. Additionally, she totaled six hat tricks, 16 assists, 675 touches/takeaways and attempted 374 shots in her career. In terms of awards, Burnette was Second Team All-Sandusky Bay Conference (SBC) and Second Team All-District as a senior. During her junior year, she was Honorable Mention All-SBC and Honorable Mention All-District. She was also Honorable Mention All-SBC as a sophomore. Her team was a four-time SBC champion, three-time sectional champion and a two-time district runner-up. She helped her team capture 48 straight league wins at one point during her career. Academically, she maintained a 3.2 GPA.

PERSONAL Amber is the daughter of Chris and Racheal Losie. She has two brothers, Andy and Adam.

KAYLA LEHMANN #8

5’4” Defender Bedford/Temperance, MI OWENS CAREER (2013) Lehmann made 12 starts, while seeing action in 18 games as a freshman. She suffered an injury prior to the team’s regular season finale against Cincinnati State, but returned to the starting lineup for the team’s two national tournament games. Her lone goal as a freshman came in a Sept. 21 win over Lorain County.

PRIOR TO OWENS Lehmann was named First Team All-Southeastern Conference (SEC), First Team All-District, and Monroe News First Team All-Region as a senior. Her team finished 9-7-2 overall and advanced to the district semifinals. During the season, she played in all 18 matches, recorded three goals, three assists and one game-winning assist. As a junior, she was Honorable Mention All-SEC while playing in 22 of 23 matches. She recorded two goals and one assist while helping the team finish 12-9-2. She sat out her sophomore year due to an injury, but her team finished 15-6-1. She served as the team manager while the team had their best record in program history and recorded the first two state playoff victories in program history. Lehmann was a four-year varsity starter at Bedford, although she didn’t record any stats during a freshman year in which her team finished 10-7-2.

PERSONAL Kayla is the daughter of David and Robin Lehmann. She has two siblings, Brooke and Taylor.

MEGAN SONCRANT # 11 5’4” Defender Clay/Oregon, OH

OWENS CAREER (2013) Soncrant, who saw action in all 21 games as a freshman, stepped in for the injured Kayla Lehmann and started the regular season finale against Cincinnati State and both Region XII tournament games. In those tournament games, she helped the Express post back-to-back shutouts. As the team’s backup goalkeeper, Soncrant started two games and saw action in four. She finished 2-0 and picked up a huge win in relief of Erika Brinkman on Oct. 2. On that day, she played a season-high 56:47 in a double overtime win over No. 11 Schoolcraft College. She didn’t allow a goal and made one save in her four games played.

PRIOR TO OWENS Soncrant, who plays the field and in goal, could see action at both spots for the Express. She played 45 varsity games and was a twoyear varsity letter winner. As a senior, she was an Honorable Mention All-TRAC selection and won the team’s Coaches Award. Coached by Scott Wamer, Soncrant helped her team captured the Three Rivers Athletic Conference (TRAC) championship as a senior.

SHELBY ANTONACCI

Midfielder Millbury Lake/Perrysburg, OH UNIVERSITY OF TOLEDO CAREER (2013) In 2013, Antonacci played in 17 games for the the NCAA Division I University of Toledo women’s soccer team, while starting five of those. She recorded two goals on seven shots. She tallied single goals against Indiana State on Sept. 20 and Western Michigan University on Sept. 27. She will have one year of eligibility at Owens.

PRIOR TO OWENS Antonacci, who was UT’s third leading goal scorer as a freshman, had 77 goals and 48 assists in her four-year career at Lake. She holds the single game, single season and career records in goals and assists. As a senior, Antonacci had 21 goals and 11 assists. She also tallied 25 goals and eight assists as a junior, 14 goals and 12 assists as a sophomore and 17 goals and 17 assists as a freshman. She earned Second Team All-Ohio and First Team All-District honors her final two years. She was a two-time Northern Buckeye Conference (NBC) Player of the Year and a two-time Suburban Lakes League Player of the Year (one year was a Co-POY, though). She was First Team All-SLL twice and First Team All-NBC twice. The one year she earned Co-POY came when former Express two-year starter (2012-13) Taylor Avers of Woodmore High School shared it with her in 2010-11. In her four years at Lake, the Flyers went 61-10-4. They reached the district semifinals her sophomore year before falling 1-0 to Genoa in overtime and the regional finals her freshman year before falling to St. Mary’s Memorial in the second set of penalty kicks. Antonacci will become the third Lake High School graduate to play for Owens. She joins Drew Plummer (2012) and Tara Preble (2012-13). They played together on the 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons, in which Lake went 353-3.

PERSONAL Shelby is the daughter of John and Robinne Antonacci. She has one sibling, Shane.

LACEE ORTMAN # 18

5’7” Defender Southview/Sylvania, OH OWENS CAREER (2013) Ortman had three goals and one assist in a freshman campaign that saw her start two of 18 games played. She had a season-high two goals in a win over Indiana Tech JV on Sept. 15.

PRIOR TO OWENS Ortman was a four-year varsity award winner at Southview. She played under the tutelage of Amy Knepper.

PERSONAL Lacee is the daughter of Steve and Sheila Ortman. She has three sisters - Chandler, McKenzie and Chase.

5’7” Midfielder Central Catholic/Toledo, OH BGSU CAREER (2013) Malaczewski spent her freshman year at NCAA Division I Bowling Green State University, where she produced one goal over 16 games. Her goal came in the season opener, and she finished tied for third on the team in goals scored and shots on goal (8).

PRIOR TO OWENS The 2013 Central Catholic graduate amassed 69 goals and 29 assists in her four-year career on the Irish women’s soccer team under the tutelage of head coach Don Jablonski. As a senior, she tallied 23 goals and 13 assists. She holds school records for goals in a game (4), season (26) and career, as well as assists in a game (4) and career. The two-year team captain was a two-time Three Rivers Athletic Conference (TRAC) Player of the Year in 2011 and 2012, while also becoming a two-time First Team All-District and two-time Second Team AllOhio selection. Academically, she was an honor roll student and graduated Summa Cum Laude.

PERSONAL Haley is the sister of former Owens women’s volleyball player, Chelsey Malaczewski (2006-07). She is the daughter of David and Cindy Malaczewski. Aside from Chelsey, she also has another older sister, Alexa. Her father played baseball at Kent State University.

5’6” Forward Onsted/Onsted, MI

OWENS CAREER (2013) Powell started two games, while seeing action in 20, as a freshman. She tallied four goals and one assist, while producing a season-high two goals in a win over Indiana Tech JV on Sept. 15.

PRIOR TO OWENS Powell was a three-sports athlete at Onsted High School. In soccer, she was a member of seven indoor and outdoor travel soccer championship teams with Real FC from 2006-12. Her high school soccer coach was Sally Skeels. In track, she was an All-Michigan selection in 2010-11 and 2011-12 and a member of the 2010-11 state championship team in the 4 x 400 meter relay. She was also part of the 4 x 800 meter relay team that finished sixth the same year. Additionally, she was a member of the very successful Onsted girls basketball team. The program won back-to-back Lenawee County Athletic Association (LCAA) league championships.

5’5” Defender/Midfielder Start/Toledo, OH PRIOR TO OWENS Yeager tallied 43 goals and 22 assists in her high school career that spanned three years at Toledo Christian and one year at Start. She was named First Team All-NWOHSSL all four years and was the NWOHSSL Player of the Year as a junior. In her first three years at Toledo Christian, she talled 33 goals and 19 assists, including 15 goals and nine assists her junior year. Following the season, she was named First Team All-District in Division III. Following that season, she transferred to Start, where she produced 10 goals and three assists en route to Honorable Mention All-District honors in Division I. Yeager was named the team’s MVP each of her four seasons.

JESSICA KREGER # 15

5’5” Midfielder Bedford/Temperance, MI PRIOR TO OWENS Kreger broke Bedford’s career assist mark with 25, and she finished with 14 goals and 53 points over her four-year varsity career. As a senior, she totaled three goals and two assists for the 7-7-3 Mules, while playing in 13 matches. She scored the game winning goal against Dearborn Heights Crestwood and and had a game-tying goal at Monroe. As a junior, Kreger led the team in assists and points, and she tied for second in goals while leading the Mules to a 9-7-2 record, which included a penalty kick loss in the state playoffs. In 18 matches, she produced seven goals and 10 assists. Two of those goals were game winners, one was a game tying goal and one came via a penalty kick. She also had two game winning assists. Furthermore, she had a hat trick in a win over Adrian and had a six game point streak. She earned Honorable Mention All-Southeastern Conference (SEC) honors following the season. Kreger led the team to an 11-9-2 mark as a sophomore. She produced four goals and six assists, and had a hat trick against Adrian on April 17. As a freshman, Kreger played in all 22 matches for the best team in school history (15-6-1. She helped that year’s team become the first in school history to win a state playoff game (they won two) before losing in the district championship game. While she didn’t produce a goal, Kreger finished tied for second on the team in assists with seven. Aside from her junior year Honorable Mention All-SEC recognition, Kreger also earned the following honors during her high school career: team Freshman of the Year, District All-Tournament team and the team’s Offensive MVP award. Academically, she earned Summa Cum Laude honors with a 3.92 GPA. She played for head coach Aaron Wolfe.

5’7” Forward Riverdale/Forest, OH PRIOR TO OWENS As a senior at Riverdale, Wright earned First Team All-North Central Ohio Soccer Association (NCOSA), First Team All-District and Second Team AllOhio honors. She played under the tutelage of former Owens men’s soccer player Andrew Snook. Academically, Wright was a member of the National Honor Society and she graduated with honors.

Gasser’s Return, First Half Goal Sparks Owens Women In 5-0 Shut Out of Lake Michigan Benton Harbor, MI---Haley Gasser, who missed all but one and a half games last year due to injury, scored the team’s first goal in a 5-0 win over Lake Michigan College today. Gasser deposited the ball into the top right corner of the net on a shot from near the left sideline to put the her team up 1-0 with 22:01 left in the half. The goal, which came on an assist from Abby Groll, would spark an offensive onslaught for the Express. Just less than six minutes later, with 16:16 left in the half, Jill Burkholder was taken down in the box and converted the ensuing penalty kick for a 2-0 lead. With 7:24 left, Jessica Grindle put one past the goalkeeper before Brittany Powell raced down the

left sideline and beat her defender and the goalkeeper for a goal with 1:47 left in the half.

Christian’s Goal Too Little, Too Late in 3-1 Loss To Schoolcraft Toledo, OH---Kendyl Christian’s late goal wasn’t enough as the Express women’s soccer team dropped a 3-1 home decision to Schoolcraft College today. The lone goal for the Express came at the 73:21 mark when Tara Preble made a strong move against a defender to retain possession on the right sideline and made a cross to Christian, who scored her second goal in the past two games.

Grindle’s Hat Trick Integral As Owens Post 7-0 Shutout of Mercyhurst North East Toledo, OH---Jessica Grindle scored three goals and added one assist to lead the Express women’s soccer team past Mercyhurst North East 7-0 today. The Express offense peppered Mercyhurst North East’s goalkeeper, Olivia Shear, all day. They finished with 31 shots on goal, while Shear saved 20 shots and numerous shots hit the side posts and crossbar. Grindle got the Express out to a 2-0 lead early as she scored just 4:30 and 6:31 into the game. Later, Haley Gasser scored her second goal of the season with just under four minutes left in the first half to give the Express a 3-0 lead at the break.

September 8, 2013 Gasser assisted on Grindle’s first goal, while Brittany Powell assisted on Grindle’s second goal. Gasser’s goal came when she stole the ball from a defender and lofted a nice shot over the goalkeeper’s head. In the second half, the Express continued to pressure the Mercyhurst North East defense. Their first goal of the half came when Megan Soncrant was fouled deep in Mercyhurst territory in the 52nd minute. Elizabeth Theaker took the free kick and directed it into the top left corner of the net for her first career goal. The next goal came in the 60th minute when Grindle crossed a shot from the left, which Abby Groll headed in for her first goal of the season. The Express went up 6-0 when Samantha Starkey scored her first career goal in the 64th minute. Marissa Ramirez headed the ball off a corner kick to Starkey, who delivered the shot. Grindle then drilled a laser of a shot into the top corner of the net in the 70th minute to finish the scoring. Lacee Ortman picked up her first assist on the goal. Erika Brinkman started in goal for the Express. She did not face a shot on goal in the game’s

Notes Today was the first multiple goal game for Grindle, a sophomore who had previously scored eight career goals in separate games. It was the third time in her career that she recorded at least one goal and one assist. She now has a team-high five goals this year. Her seven points today marks the fourth most in a single game in Express women’s soccer history. Soncrant saw her first minutes of the season in goal today. The backup goalkeeper spends most of her time at midfield for the Express. While the Express outshot Mercyhurst 31-0, they also posted a 10-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Theaker now has one career goal to go along with an assist she had last year. Powell and Groll now have one goal and one assist in their first year with the Express. Ramirez picked up her second career assist. Ramirez nearly scored her first career goal late in the game on a header off a corner kick, but the ball hit the crossbar and was cleared out. Ortman, Two Others Score Twice As Owens Women Roll Past Indiana Tech JV 9-2 Fort Wayne, IN---Three players scored two goals apiece as the Express women’s soccer team defeated Indiana Tech University’s JV team 9-2 today. Jessica Grindle scored two of the team’s first three goals to lead the early charge. The sophomore’s first goal came 4:47 into the game on an assist from Jill Burkholder. Kendyl Christian made it 2-0 with a goal at the 7:23 mark on a cross from Abby Groll. Grindle added her second goal at the 13:17 point on an assist from Elizabeth Theaker. After an 18-minute goal hiatus, Lacee Ortman scored her first collegiate goal 31:26 into the game on another assist from Burkholder. Amber Burnette added to that with her first collegiate goal, unassisted, at the 40:35 mark. Following that, Brittany Powell added her second goal of the season 23 seconds later to put

Grindle’s Second Hat Trick in 3 Games Leads Owens to 5-0 Win over Cincinnati State September 18, 2013 Jill Burkholder made it a five goal lead with a goal off a header on a cross by Gasser at the 59:40 mark. Overall, the Express out-shot Cincinnati State 30-3, including an 11-2 edge in the second half. The Express held an 18-2 advantage in shots on goal, as well. Grindle and Gasser each had a team-high three shots on goal, while Burkholder and Christian each had two shots on goal. Erika Brinkman made two saves in her only two shots faced on goal, while Lee made 13 saves on her 18 shots faced. The Express held a 13-1 advantage in corner kicks.

It was Grindle’s second hat trick in the past three games. The Express came out firing away offensively. They produced eight shots in the game’s first eight and a half minutes, with three saved by Cincinnati State’s goalkeeper, Kelsie Lee.

The next shot, however, was put in the back left corner of the net by Abby Groll. It was assisted by Haley Kreger and gave the Express a 1-0 lead at the 10:15 mark. Later, with just seven seconds left in the first half, Grindle scored her first goal off a cross from Haley Gasser to put the Express up 2-0. In the first half, the Express outshot Cincinnati State 19-1 overall, with the Surge getting zero shots

on goal. After missing quite a few opportunities to add on in the first half, the Express didn’t waste much time doing so in the second half.

The next action for the Express, who have won three straight, will be at home this Saturday against Lorain County Community College at 11 a.m. Gasser finished the game with three assists, while Christian added two and Kreger added one. The team had a double-assist on the team’s third goal.

Burnette Scores Two Goals, Owens Women Rout Lorain County 10-0 Toledo, OH---Kendyl Christian scored just 14 seconds into the game as the Express women’s soccer team routed Lorain County Community College 10-0 at home today. Christian’s goal broke Jessica Grindle’s record for quickest goal to start a game. The previous mark was 46 seconds against Cincinnati State on Oct. 20, 2012. Following Christian’s goal, the Express added four more goals in the game’s first 10 minutes. Jill Burkholder had back-to-back goals at the 2:46 and 4:26 marks, followed by Jessica Grindle (6:18) and Amber Burnette (9:01). Marissa Ramirez assisted Burkholder’s second goal, while Abby Groll assisted Grindle’s goal. The other two were unassisted. Kayla Lehmann scored her first collegiate goal by beating the keeper to the top left corner of the net at the 21:30 mark to put the Express up 6-0. Burnette then added another goal, at the 28:26 mark, before Grindle added her second at the 36:46 mark. Haley Gasser assisted on Grindle’s second goal, while the Express took an 8-0 lead into halftime. In the second half, Haley Kreger produced the only two Express goals, with them coming at the 65:37 and 78:01 marks. On the second one, Groll crossed the ball from right to left before Kreger headed it. The initial shot was saved, but Kreger followed it up with another header for the goal. Both of Kreger’s goals were unassisted. Erika Brinkman started in goal for the Express and played most of the first half before being replaced by Megan Soncrant, who played until the 85th minute. Kreger spent the last five minutes in goal. It was the second appearance in goal this year for Soncrant, while it was Kreger’s first appearance. Soncrant made the only save of the game, on

She is currently tied for 12th in the nation in goals at the NJCAA D-I level. Burkholder scored her sixth and seventh goals of the season, while Burnette had her second and third goals of the season.

Toledo, OH---The Express women’s soccer team scored two goals in the first five minutes of the second half today to propel the team to a 2-1 come-from-behind win over Muskegon Community College. The Express had controlled much of the first half before Muskegon scored on their only shot on goal in the half at the 42:30 mark to take a halftime lead. In the second stanza, the Express came out firing, with the game tying goal coming from Jessica Grindle at the 48:28 mark on an assist off a free kick from Elizabeth Theaker. Moments later, Jill Burkholder was fouled on the left side of the goal towards the sideline. She then drilled a kick into the top right portion of the net past the keeper for what turned out to be the game winner. From there, the Express controlled

The win gives the Express their sixth straight win, four of which have come via shutout. Grindle put the Express up 1-0 with her 14th goal of the year just 1:50 into the match. Her goal came via an assist from Elizabeth Theaker, who picked up her third assist of the year on the play.

Later, Lacee Ortman scored her third goal of the season at the 29:25 mark on an assist from Jill Burkholder to give the Express a 2-0 lead at halftime. It was Burkholder’s third assist of the year. Grindle added her 15th goal of the season, and second of the game, at

Jill Burkholder assisted on the game winner, which came at the 101:47 mark. It was her fourth assist of the season. Earlier in the game, Kendyl Christian put the Express up early with a goal just 6:01 into the match. Schoolcraft answered to tie it up just over three minutes later at the 9:12 mark. Burkholder Drills Delta College As Owens Women Win 8th Straight Toledo, OH---Jill Burkholder’s penalty kick goal got the Express women’s soccer team going as they defeated Delta College 3-1 at home today. Burkholder nearly had two more goals in the first half as one shot was a laser off the left post, while another was a shot off the crossbar.

Indiana Tech JV, who brought several varsity players along with them today, scored in the game’s 14th minute when Manuela Cabal’s defender fell, allowing Cabal a free path to the goal. They nearly took the lead into the break, but Abby Groll scored with eight seconds left in the half on a cross from Jessica Grindle to tie it up. Owens Women’s Soccer Enters NJCAA D-I poll at No. 19 Toledo, OH---The Express women’s soccer team has entered the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) D-I poll at No. 19 upon the release of today’s poll. It is the first time the team has been ranked this season despite a program record 13-game winning streak, which has included a 2-1 double overtime victory over current No. 15 Schoolcraft College along the way. During their 13-game winning streak, the Express has outscored opponents 59-9. Additionally, they have allowed one goal or less in 12 of those matches (11 straight) and pitched five shutouts over that period. The Express, who are currently 15-2 overall, enter this weekend’s Region XII tournament as the No. 2 seed behind Schoolcraft College. They open up play in the four-team tournament against No. 3 seed Delta College at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

2014 Owens Women’s Soccer Media Guide Whisler, Three Owens Women’s Soccer Players Earn Postseason Honors

Toledo, Ohio---Express women’s soccer head coach Mary Whisler was named Region XII Coach of the Year, while three of her players earned postseason honors.

Whisler, in her third year as head coach at Owens, was named the region’s top coach after leading the Express to the program’s first Region XII tournament championship last weekend. It is the first time Whisler has won the award. In three seasons coaching the Express, Whisler is 42-12-3, including a 17-2 record this year. In fact, the Express are currently on a school-record 15-match winning streak. She has also improved the team’s win total each year (12 in 2011, 13 in 2012 and 17 this year). Sophomore forward Jessica Grindle (Northwood/Northwood, Ohio) and sophomore midfielder Jill Burkholder (Bryan/Bryan, Ohio) were named First Team All-Region XII.

Grindle is the team’s leading scorer with 21 goals and five assists. She is the region’s leading scorer and ranks in the top 30 in the nation in goals scored and points. In her career, Grindle has 27 goals and eight assists.

This is her second consecutive First Team All-Region XII selection. Both of those players were also named to the Region XII All-Tournament team, while Grindle was named the MVP after scoring two goals in two games. Aside from those two, sophomore defender Marissa Ramirez (Northwood/Northwood, Ohio) earned Second Team All-Region XII honors for the second consecutive season. No. 13 Owens Women’s Soccer Opens Nationals Against No. 4 Darton State College Toledo, Ohio---The No. 13 Express women’s soccer team has been seeded ninth in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) D-I National Tournament. The 12-team tournament, which will be played in Melbourne, Fla., features four pools of three teams. The Express will take on No. 4 Darton State (GA) College (fourth seed) at 4 p.m. on Nov. 18 in their first match of the tournament. Melbourne, Fla.---The No. 13 Express women’s soccer team saw a familiar scenario play out in the second game of pool play at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) D-I National Tournament against No. 5 Butler (KS) Community College today.

Jessica Grindle (Northwood/Northwood, Ohio) scored on a corner from Jill Burkholder (Bryan/Bryan, Ohio) with just under four minutes remaining in the first half to give the Express a 1-0 lead. In that half, the Express held Butler without a shot on goal, and it marked the first time all season Butler had that happen to them. In fact, Butler’s Morgan Foster came into the came leading the nation in goals scored with 43. She was held without a goal until the penalty kick session. In the second half, Butler’s Brittney Lawrence found the net for her team in the game’s 53rd minute to tie it up. Following that, each team had their chances. Butler had two late corners, but was stuffed both times. Additionally, Express goalkeeper Erika Brinkman (Kalida/ Cloverdale, Ohio) made several nice saves down the stretch to send her team to PKs for the second straight game. This time, however, the Express came out on top to stay alive in their hopes of advancing to the NJCAA D-I Final Four. It was her fourth goal of the postseason and her second in the national tournament. Burkholder’s assist was her eighth of the season. With the win, the Express are now 18-3 this year, while Butler falls to 21-3. “These girls have been the same way all year long,” said Express women’s soccer head coach Mary Whisler. “They never give up. They never have, they never will. I couldn’t ask for a better group. It’s a great feeling to be here and to show that we belong.”

Tiebreaker Scenarios With the penalty kick session win, the Express are 0-0-2 in the tournament, but have secured three points (two for today’s penalty kick win and one for yesterday’s penalty kick loss). The other two teams in their pool, Butler (0-0-1, one point) and Darton State (0-0-1, two points) will play at 4 p.m. tomorrow. The Express need Butler to win in penalty kicks to create a tiebreaker situation. Any regulation outcome in either team’s favor tomorrow eliminates the Express, while a Darton penalty kick win would give them four points and advance them. Should Darton and Butler tie 1-1 in regulation with Butler winning

in PKs, it would create a virtual three-way tie. There would then be games played on Thursday between all three teams. The games would consist of two 10 minute overtime sessions followed by a penalty kick session if necessary. One team, via coin flip, would receive a bye, while the other two would play first. The winner of that plays the team that got the bye for the right to move on. Should Butler and Darton tie 2-2, 3-3, 4-4, etc. in regulation and Butler wins, the Express will advance due to have only given up two goals in regulation. The winner of the pool advances to the NJCAA D-I Final Four this weekend.

Notes No. 5 Butler had gone 12 straight games with at least three or more goals this season. The Express held them to one goal for only the third time this season. In the penalty kick session, the player that scored for each team in regulation (Grindle, Owens and Lawrence, Butler) were both stopped in their shot attempts.

Toledo, Ohio---The No. 13 Express women’s soccer team has returned home following their run in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) D-I national tournament, but brought some awards with them. Sophomore forward Jessica Grindle, who scored two goals in her team’s two national tournament games, was named to the NJCAA D-I All-National Tournament team. She is the first soccer player, men’s or

women’s, in the history of Owens to achieve that honor. Grindle had 23 goals and five assists in her final season with the Express. Additionally, she totaled 29 goals and eight assists over 31 games in her two-year career. She only played in 10 games her freshman year due to injury. Owens Adopts a Family Through United Way of Toledo

Toledo, Ohio---The Express women’s soccer team worked with United Way to provide Christmas gifts for a local family this past weekend.

For the second straight year, the Express players and coaches took part in the United Way of Toledo’s Adopt a Family program, where the team provides Christmas to a family in need. The family puts together a list of needs and wants ahead of time. “Our goal is to make sure they get everything they need and almost everything they want,” said Express women’s soccer head coach Mary Whisler. It was Whisler who contacted the local United Way last year to see how the team could help. “Receiving a gift on Christmas is special,” Whisler said. “Giving an

entire family a Christmas is truly one of the best gifts of all. I have a very special group of girls. Their huge hearts showed on the field and also with this project. It’s a really good feeling.”

Owens Women’s Soccer Program Ranked Among Nation’s Top 10 Teams

Toledo, Ohio---The Express women’s soccer program received great news yesterday as it was announced that the team is ranked 10th in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/Continental Tire Division I JUCO poll.

The poll, which was announced as the final postseason poll for the 2013 season, features the Express with their highest ranking in program history. They jumped 10 spots from the previous, end of regular season ranking. Also in the top 10 are two teams that the Express battled to penalty kicks in the national tournament Butler (KS) Community College at No. 4 and Darton (GA) State College at No. 6. 2014 Owens Women’s Soccer Media Guide Theaker Signs With MidAmerica Nazarene University

Toledo, Ohio---Elizabeth Theaker (Maumee/Maumee, Ohio) has signed with the MidAmerica Nazarene University women’s soccer program out of Kansas.

In her freshman year, Theaker started in 15 games. Playing a lot of time at centerback, she was an important part of the 10 shutouts the team garnished in 2012.

The sophomore defender started in all 21 games in 2013 and potted three goals and three assists as she helped the Express to a 17-2-2 record. Along the way, the Express won a program-record 15 straight games and were ranked at No. 13, the highest in program history.

Theaker will finish her career at Owens with three goals and four assists in 36 games played.

Theaker was named to the Region XII all-tournament team in 2013. She scored the game-winning goal for the Express in the tournament that gave the Express their firstever national tournament appearance. In the national tournament, Theaker came up big again by scoring a goal to give the Express a PK victory in a 1-1 tie.

Theaker joins Drew Plummer (Tiffin University) and Jill Burkholder (University of Saint Francis) as one of three Express players in the program’s three-year history to play at a four-year school. She will play for a MNU team that went 12-4-4 overall and 3-2-2 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference of the NAIA. The Pioneers never lost a game by more than a goal in the 2013 regular season and were undefeated at home with a record of 7-0-2.

Owens Goalkeeper, Brinkman, Signs With NAIA Purdue University Calumet

Toledo, Ohio---Erika Brinkman, the starting goalkeeper for the Owens Community College women’s soccer team the past two years, has signed with Purdue University Calumet.

The Kalida High School product helped lead the Owens women’s soccer program to the first Region XII tournament championship in program history last year. During the season, she started 19 of 21 games and made 48 saves. In those starts, she allowed only 18 goals and tallied a season-high five saves on four occasions - including each of the final three matches of the postseason. She also posted six shutouts as the team finished 17-2-2 and won a program record 15 straight games. Brinkman closed her two-year career with 29 goals allowed and 121 saves. She had 14 career shutouts,

including back-to-back shutouts in the Region XII tournament her sophomore year, which helped her earn all-tournament honors.

The sophomore defender held Butler Community College’s Morgan Foster, the nation’s leading scorer, and Darton State’s Lyana Perez, the nation’s third leading scorer, without a point in their games against Owens in the national tournament this past fall. OWENS EXPRESS: A WINNING TRADITION

The Owens Community College women’s soccer team has produced three All-Americans in three years of existence. Kendra Eitniear (201112) is the program’s all-time leading scorer and the only NJCAA All-American (Honorable Mention, 2012). Meanwhile, Jessica Grindle (Second Team) and Jill Burkholder (First Team) both earned NSCAA All-American honors during the 2013 season. The trio, pictured to the right, comprise the top three scorers in program history.
