After a slow start, the Express slowly improved as the season went along. They entered the Sub-Region XII tournament as underdogs, but they defeated Vincennes University 4-0 and Cuyahoga Community College 13-7 to advance to the program’s first Region XII tournament since the 2009-10 season.

In their Region XII opener against Jackson College, sophomore right hander Dane Davis twirled a masterpiece for eight innings, helping the Express take a 4-1 lead into the ninth inning. The Jets, however, rallied for three runs in the ninth to force extras. That’s when sophomore shortstop Nate Manis delivered a two-run single with the bases load to give the Express a 6-4 lead. Freshman Sam Hackney, who fin-

The next day, however, the Express offense couldn’t get rolling as they dropped two games, 3-0 to Delta College and 9-1 to Muskegon Community College to end their season at 15-29. Davis was the ace on the mound for the Express all year.

Despite finishing just 2-4, he had a 3.78 ERA and 41 strikeouts in 66.2 innings pitched. Following the season, Davis signed with NCAA Division I IPFW.

Shullick, who led the team in batting average, went on to sign with Tiffin University, while Manis, who led the team in steals, signed at Wayne State University.

Two other sophomores, Manis and Logan Shullick, were each named All-Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) after the season.

In addition to those three, sophomores Sean Koerber (Lourdes University), Justin Elder (Union College), Ryan Horvath (Union College) and Nick Collins (Purdue University North Central) all signed with fouryear schools. Academically, the Express had a solid season as seven players were named to the Academic All-OCCAC team led by a 3.78 GPA from Davis, who also earned National Junior College

OWENS EXPRESS BASEBALL

Baseball Returns To Owens In 1993-94 In the mid 1960s, Owens Community College, then known as Penta Technical College, fielded a baseball team for one season under the direction of Joe Westenkirchner. Aside from that information, not much is really known about that team. To the right, a student-athlete sports the old “PC baseball uniform worn by that mid 1960s team during an early 1990s ceremony to announce the return of baseball to Owens. Also pictured in the photos to the right are then college president Dan Brown, who is pictured holding up the No. 94 jersey, throwing out a ceremonial first pitch and speaking to the crowd. Head coach Dave Wagner, who led the team from 1993-97, as well as the club season of 1992-93, is pictured with the red Owens baseball hat on. Since the 1993-94 season, the Express has won over 500 games and made the national tournament twice.
