2012-13 YEAR IN REVIEW at the national tournament, although that was at the NJCAA D-III level.

Alyssa Meis and Dakia Sellers

This duo will go down as the one of the best 1-2 offensive combination in program history, if not the best. The outside hitting duo combined for 1,231 kills, 695 digs and 233 blocks. Both players broke the previous single season kills record held by Stephanie Champine (595), with Sellers ultimately achieving the highest mark with 618. She also added 158 blocks, 122 digs, eight aces and eight assists. Following the season, Sellers was named First Team All-OCCAC, First Team All-Region XII and NJCAA D-II First Team All-American. Historical Season

The 2012-13 Express volleyball team produced, arguably, the best season in program history. They finished 37-11 overall and captured the program’s 13th OCCAC championship. They captured the OCCAC with a perfect 12-0 record, which was the eighth time in program history that has happened. Despite all that, it’s what the team did in the postseason that mattered most. At the NJCAA D-II level, no prior team has finished better at the national tournament than the fourth place finish last year’s team accomplished. From 19982000, three straight teams finished third

In the national quarterfinal, she recorded a season-high 27 kills to help the Express defeat Iowa Central Community College in five sets.

In four NJCAA D-II National Tournament matches, she had 53 kills, 60 digs, seven assisted blocks, three solo blocks and one ace. Meis ended her two-year career with 776 kills, 646 digs, 124 blocks, 49 aces and 13 assists. She ended her career with the sixth most career kills.

Aside from Meis, another sophomore who closed out a record setting two-year career was the team’s setter, Molly Hilfinger. She broke the single match, single season and career assist records last year. On Oct. 24, her 64 assists against Sinclair broke the single match record, and she became only the third player in program history to record 2,000 career assists on Oct. 26. Overall, she finished with 1,518 assists as a sophomore. Her sophomore assist total was third most in the nation.

Sonny Lewis Head Coach - 13th Season Sonny Lewis is his 13th season as head coach of the Express women’s volleyball team. In 2012, the Express went 37-11 overall. They captured the program’s 13th OCCAC championship with a perfect 12-0 record, the Region XII District E championship and advanced to the NJCAA D-II National Tournament, where they finished fourth in the nation. It was the best finish in program history at the NJCAA D-II level. This came following a 45-5 season in 2011, where the Express won the OCCAC title with a perfect conference record and finished as the Region XII District E runner-up to Oakland Community College, who went on to finish as the national runner-up.
