2014 Media Guide Team Profile

Overall

The 2013 Owens Community College softball team overcame the loss of several players to advance into the Region XII District G championship game before falling to Kalamazoo Valley Community College. The Express, who finished 24-17, had several players play in uncomfortable positions last year, although many of them excelled. Several times, the Express played with three natural first baseman and an outfielder in their four infield spots as Katie Butler played third, Emily Rockman played short, Tyniesha Wilson played second base and Molly Gast played first. In the circle, the Express lost one of their top two starters, Jolene Sauter, early in the season. That forced the bulk of the workload on freshmen, Katie Turski and Gast. Turski was, perhaps, the biggest key to the success that the team had. She finished 20-10 overall with a 4.15 ERA. In postseason play, she pitched 31 of 33 innings over five games in three days. On the second day, she went 3-0 with 19 innings pitched and only two runs allowed. In those three games, she tossed two shutouts. Overall, Turski pitched 197 of the team’s 270 innings. Aside from her, Gast (2-2, 40. 1 IP, 4.18 ERA), Amanda Sinay (02, 5.1 IP, 13.70 ERA) and April DeCant (0-1, 14.1 IP, 1.48 ERA) chipped in after Sauter left with 13 IP. Sinay and DeCant, both sophomores, had never pitched in college prior.

9

Offensively, the sophomore speed duo of Mareshah Scott (.433) and Melanie Iacoangeli (.433) each hit over .430 and combined for 73 steals in 79 attempts. Another sophomore, Jaylee Glad, hit .405, while Rockman blasted her way to a .401 average and team-highs of five home runs, 17 doubles and 37 RBIs. Sophomore Olivia Reeder, another vital key to last year’s success, started all 41 games while hitting .318 with 36 RBIs. Wilson, who came from the outfield to play second base, hit .394 as a freshman. As a team, the Express finished one game back of first place Cuyahoga C.C., who ended the five year title streak by the Express. In the district tournament, the Express dropped their opener to Grand Rapids, but defeated Muskegon, Grand Rapids and Lansing to win the loser’s bracket on the second day. That set up a championship tilt against KVCC, who defeated the Express 8-1 with eight unanswered runs. Turski, Rockman and Reeder were each named to the all-tournament team, while Turski and Iacoangeli won the OCCAC pitcher and player of the year awards, respectively. Scott, Reeder and Rockman were also named All-OCCAC. Iacoangeli and Scott were All-Region XII, too. Following the season, three players signed with NCAA D-I schools and one signed with an NCAA D-II school. Reeder and Scott went to the Univ. of Toledo, Turski went to BGSU and Wilson went to Kentucky State.

After leading the team to a 28-9 record in his first year, Lanham led the Express to a 44-12 record in 2005. Along the way, the team captured the OCCAC championship for the fifth time, the regional championship for the first time and made their first trip to the national tournament.

April Nietrzeba and Kelli Short, as well as a solid mix of offensive players, including sophomore catcher Tracy Lehman. Freshmen Cortney Simmons, Lindsay Guinn, Kylie Zweifel and Short all hit over .300, with Short leading the way at .472. In 2011, the Express got three key transfers in Kristen Roznoski, Alaina Haubert and Jordan Ratliff. Roznoski would leadoff and play enter, while leading the team with a .509 average and 42 steals. Meanwhile, Ratliff anchored the pitching staff with a 19-3 record, a 1.88 ERA and 101 strikeouts.

Alaina Haubert, who hit in the heart of the order and played third base, hit .487 and had a team-high 51 RBIs. That year may have also featured the deepest pitching staff in program history with freshmen Ashlyn Michalak and Kasey Graham, in addition to sophomores Elizabeth Weber and Courtney Parr. Michalak threw a complete game to get the win in the national semifinal, Weber had some very important innings in postseason play and Graham finished 18-1 in her twoyear career. Offensively, the Express had five players hit at least .400,

while totaling a program record .405 team batting average. Those five included: Roznoski, Haubert, Allison Hausch (.448), Ashleigh Whitacre (.409) and Lindsey Bandeen (.403). The 2011 team started 33-0 (a program record) and won the program’s 10th OCCAC championship. They captured a thrilling Region XII tournament and captured one of the most thrilling wins in program history with an extra inning, national touranment win over South Mountain. Could the 2014 team achieve history? The team needs 35 wins to reach 500 as a program.

Duane Lanham

The Express softball program officially began in the spring of 1999 under the direction of Mickey Arquette (just above). In the spring of 2004, current head coach Duane Lanham took over. He eclipsed 300 career wins this past season and enters this year with 322 career victories. He will look to guide the Express to the program’s 500th win this season. To the left, he greets Cortney Simmons in the 2005 season.
