Lasst uns über Gefühle sprechen
Seit in den 1980er Jahren die ersten Stahlrahmen auf profillosen Reifen über Mallorca bretterten, hat sich viel getan. Es steht wohl außer Frage, dass man im Frühjahr nirgendwo in Europa mehr Rennradfahrer findet als auf der größten der Balearischen Inseln. Dieser Erfolg hat natürlich Gründe. Natürliche Gründe. Da wäre zum einen das Klima. In den vielerorts kalten und wechselhaften Monaten von Februar bis Mai gibt es auf Mallorca fast durchgehend perfekte Bikebedingungen. Auf der Haut eine Durchschnittstemperatur von 20 Grad, an den Küsten ein kühlendes Lüftchen um die Nase und die strahlende Sonne über dem Helm. Es geht schlimmer. Aber nicht nur das Wetter treibt die Rennradfahrer nach Mallorca. Zum anderen ist es die sensationelle Landschaft, die jedem Rennradfahrer sofort ein Lächeln ins Gesicht und ein paar Watt mehr in die Pedale zaubert. Egal ob man nun mit einem fetten Grinsen um die letzten Kurven zum Cap
Formentor ballert, sich mit Schweißperlen überdeckt Sa Calobras gefürchtete Serpentinen hoch kämpft oder einfach auf dem Marktplatz von Sollér mit Freunden einen Espresso genießt, während das Rennrad nebenan an die Laterne gelehnt auf die Rückfahrt wartet. Mallorca löst etwas in einem Rennradfahrer aus, das man schwer beschreiben kann. Als ich beschloss, einen Bildband über das Rennradfahren auf dieser Insel zu machen, wollte ich dieses Gefühl einfangen, es greifbar und sichtbar machen. Mehr als zwei Jahre habe ich immer wieder intensiv an diesem Projekt, dieser Herausforderung gearbeitet. Diverse Inselbesuche, mehrere Tausend zurückgelegte Kilometer, zehntausende Fotos sowie unzählige Wochenend- und Abendstunden für Bildbearbeitung, Auswahl, Konzeption, Gestaltung und Realisierung hat es gebraucht, um „Mallorca Roadbike“ zu dem zu machen, was es ist.
Herausgekommen ist kein Tourenguide und keine komplette Sammlung aller Rennradstrecken auf Mallorca. Vielmehr ist es mein Gefühl für die Insel, das ich transportieren möchte. Der Blick auf traumhafte Abfahrten, epische Panoramawege, verschlafene Dörfer, die ewige Präsenz des Meeres und die unglaubliche mallorquinische Natur. Wen dieses einmalige „Mallorca-Rennrad-Gefühl“ einmal gepackt hat, den lässt es nicht mehr los. Vielleicht weckt dieses Buch Erinnerungen an die letzte Tour, an die gute Zeit mit Freunden oder zaubert einfach den Geruch herbei, den Mallorca verbreitet. Wenn diese Gedanken zu Taten werden und der nächste Zweiradtrip auf die Insel nur noch eine Frage des Resturlaubs ist, dann habe ich alles richtig gemacht. Let´s talk about feelings
A lot has changed since the first steel frames with slicks bombed across Mallorca in the 1980’s. It’s a fact that you won’t find more road bike riders anywhere in Europe than on the biggest of the Balearic Islands. But this success has its reasons. Natural reasons. For instance, take the climate. While it is cold and unsettling between February to May anywhere else, Mallorca offers consistently perfect conditions for biking. An average temperature of 20 degrees on your skin, a fresh breeze around the nose near the coast and a bright sun shining onto your helmet. It could be worse. But it is not only the weather that drive road bike riders to Mallorca. It can be accredited to a sensational landscape, which will put a smile on every road bike rider and add a few Watts into their paddles. No matter whether you take the last few bends to Cap Formentor with a big fat smile on your face, or you are climbing your way up Sa Calobras’ scary ser-
pentines, drenched in sweat, or whether you are simply enjoying a coffee with a few friends on the market square of Sollér while your bike leans on a lantern post, waiting for the return ride home. Mallorca has an effect on road bike riders that is difficult to put into words. When I decided to publish a coffee table book about road bike riding on this island, I wanted to capture this feeling and wanted to make it tangible and visible. I worked intensively on this project, this challenge, for more than two years. It took several visits to the island, thousands of kilometres, tens of thousands of photographs as well as many weekend and evening hours to edit, select, conceptualize, design and realise this book, „ Mallorca Roadbike“. This isn’t supposed to be a tour guide and not a complete collection of all road bike tracks around Mallorca. I wanted to convey my feeling for the island. The view of
gorgeous descents, epic panorama tracks, sleepy villages, the eternal presence of the ocean and the incredible Majorcan environment. „ If you have caught this unique Mallorca road bike feeling“, it will never let you go. Maybe this book will awake memories from your last tour, good times you had with friends or it might even bring back the smell of Mallorca. If these thoughts turn into actions and the next bike trip becomes a matter of how much annual leave you have left, then I have done everything right. In this spirit ...
