Following a two-month judging period and more than 14,000 individual scores, the finalists for The Gin Cooperative Awards 2022 have been announced.

The judging process saw 63 judges review brands from across Scotland’s exciting and growing Scottish Gin industry to determine which gins will take home Gold, Silver and Bronze across various award categories.

The Scottish Wholesale Association (SWA) has announced new collaborations with specialists The Algorithm People and Auditel as the industry pivots to a more environmentally sustainable future and reduces emissions.

The panel also featured Scottish actor and author Sam Heughan, best known for his role as Jamie Fraser in the hit series Outlander; Sam is also founder of the award winning The Sassenach malt.

Both organisations have become affiliate members of the SWA and will participate in a special webinar later this month (August 31) aimed at helping members – both wholesalers and suppliers – to not only cut costs across their business operations but reduce and calculate their carbon emissions.

Based in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, The Algorithm People is a company specialising in route optimisation, fleet scheduling and electric vehicle optimisation solutions. It is offering SWA members access to its award-winning My Transport Planner (MTP) optimisation platform with selected members also getting free access to trial and showcase the power of MTP.

Colin Smith, SWA chief executive, said: “Our association is committed to supporting our members on their journey to a more environmentally sustainable future so we are delighted to be collaborating with The Algorithm People, giving our membership the opportunity to access the range of optimisation tools which will help them to reduce cost, fuel and CO2.”

Under the new partnership with SWA, all members will benefit from discounted fees to access the My Transport Planner fleet optimisation platform – which uses powerful computer algorithms to route and schedule vehicle deliveries and collections, maximising operational efficiency.

FINALISTS ANNOUNCED FOR THE GIN COOPERATIVE AWARDS 2022 4 ontradescotland.co.uk

The judging panel brought together award-winning mixologists, including Max Hayward from Lab 22 in Cardiff and Eleonora Biason, who is Head Bartender for the gin bar at the prestigious The Holburn Dining Room, London.

Each entry has undergone a rigorous and structured judging process looking at several key elements; the flavour of the entry neat, with a tonic accompaniment and a score for packaging.

The software maximises operational efficiency with the company’s clients typically reporting improved productivity, reduced fuel cost and lower emissions of 20%. Members attending this month’s webinar will have the opportunity to explore the benefits of routing and scheduling optimisation as well as receive instruction on accessing My Transport Planner.

Beefeater, the number one Premium Flavoured Gin in 25 countries worldwide2, is continuing to drive category growth through innovation by unlocking new occasions and the new flavour combination was selected based on the top trending flavours in the UK. Beefeater Rhubarb & Cranberry can be enjoyed either as a classic Gin & Tonic or within a cocktail due to its versatility.

Desmond Payne, Master Distiller for Beefeater, comments: “This innovation is different to our original Beefeater Gin. The process starts by distilling the Beefeater Dry Gin base and then adding natural rhubarb and cranberry flavours. Whilst the product has a prominent fruit aroma, the base taste is discernibly that of juniper. Produced in our famous London copper stills, this is clearly part of the awardwinning Beefeater family. The fruit influence is achieved using exclusively natural flavours – there is no compromise for Jamesexcellence.”Bremner, On-Trade Channel Director for Pernod Ricard UK, comments: “Within the UK On-Trade growth within the Gin category is clearly being driven by Premium and Standard Flavours, with Flavoured Gins now making up over 17% of the total category2. Innovation is at the heart of Beefeater and the brand is perfectly placed to continue driving the category forward from a strong position of double-digit growth over the last twelve months3. Beefeater Rhubarb & Cranberry is a bright, eye-catching colour that will appeal to the Instagram generation of gin drinkers, whilst providing a fresh and natural taste of our classic Premium+botanicals.”Flavoured

Beefeater, the World’s Most Awarded Gin, is continuing to disrupt Premium+ Flavoured Gin by launching a brand new flavour developed exclusively for the UK by Master Distiller.

restrictions were very challenging for the licensed and hospitality trade with periods of no trading at all interspersed with periods of limited hours and customer numbers. All of this creating uncertainty and making planning impossible. Covid support measures such as furlough, grants and government-backed loans helped businesses’ cash flow positions, to some extent. With these support measures long gone, any cash buffers will now be diminishing, especially in light of current inflationary pressures. On top of that there are signs that HMRC is returning to enforcement activities with renewed vigour and anecdotal accounts of lenders becoming more wary in their lending Sopractices.whatshould businesses be doing to navigate these challenges? In the first place, keep a close eye on their financial position and cash flow projections. Even though that can sometimes be shelved as premises are busy and there are staff pressures, this is the right time to be reforecasting business plans in order to get a clear picture of where the business is going. If the financial position is not looking particularly healthy, businesses need to engage with lenders, Don’t stick your head in the sand – it’s time to look at your business and communicate with the people who can help.

pull the covers over their head and hope it’s all a bad dream! However, hiding and hoping is the last thing to do in the current climate. Instead, business owners ought to be assessing their business and engaging with stakeholders and Pandemicadvisors.

The economic picture half-way through 2022 is not particularly promising. Pandemic restrictions and protections for business have receded and instead businesses are now faced with inflation, a cost of living crisis and warnings of an imminent recession. It’s enough to make anyone want to

The right advice has never been more important.

Ignoring the challenges or hoping something will turn up to improve the situation is not the way to go. At best, if a business fails to communicate with its lenders and similar, it may lose time to set about raising capital or exploring a restructure. At worst, the business may find itself quickly facing an unrecoverable situation. If a compnay runs the business, company directors, in particular, need to be fully abreast of a company’s financial position. When a company’s business is healthy, directors have various duties to the company itself and to promote its success for the benefit of the members. Where a company is insolvent or verging on insolvency, the directors’ duties shift to prioritising the best interests of the company’s creditors. Directors who continue trading the company while insolvent risk personal liability under wrongful trading legislation. Directors should take advice as soon as possible on whether it is possible to rescue the company and what may need to be done to turn the company around. Directors also need to be cautious around the transactions the company enters into and should consider taking advice to ensure that there are no preferences or transactions under value that could subsequently be unwound if the company is liquidated. Getting advice from professional advisors, in the first instance from a solicitor and your accountant, and clearly documenting decisions taken (have a solicitor prepare board minutes and resolutions for example as this will show good practice and management) are important. Engage with lenders, landlords and others after taking advice so you are clear on your options and can present a coherent case to them asking for delayed or reduced payments, for example. These actions can help put the business on the right track again but in a company can also help protect directors from personal liability.
