Welcome to the August edition of OnTrade Scotland We hope you have your glad rags and dancing shoes at the ready because WE ARE GOING BIG TILL YOU GO HOME!! The 2nd Birthday Bash is almost upon us and we want to provide an experience for you all to remember. Last year we were the first event to take place in the UK after the removal of restrictions which meant there were limitations on what we could do, but this year the shackles are well and truly off. We want everyone attending to have an amazing night as this is allllllllll about YOU. A night for the people in the trade to come together and be entertained. A night for the industry by the people in the industry. It’s not about us, it’s for you!!! Oh, and not forgetting we have some awards to be given out ... The votes have been coming in since the first of June, and since announcing the top five in each category on the first of July we have had over 70,000 votes - yes over 70,000 - which is an unbelievable level of support from the industry, and the venues & brands customers, highlighting just how amazing a job you are doing and how much your customers value you all. These awards are NOT decided my me of anyone else in the company or our partners they are 100% the votes of the people in the industry and your customers and the winner in each category will be the one who received the most votes it’s as simple as that. We wish all the venues and brands that are in the running the very best of luck for the night and would like to remind you that reaching the top 5 in each category is a massive achievement on it’s own because these votes are by the trade and your customers that have felt strongly enough to go to the effort of voting for you instead of the many, many fantastic venues across Scotland, so we hope you are as proud as we are for you all. We as always want to thank everyone who has supported us, from commercial partners, collaborators, venues, brands, suppliers and you, words can’t explain the pride I have in the support we have been shown and I can assure you not a single person at TopGun Media or OnTrade Scotland will ever take it for granted. THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING With a change to my usual sign off I’d like to say: STAY TOGETHER SUPPORT EACH OTHER BE PROUD OF WHO & WHAT YOU ARE & LET’S GET THE PARTY STARTED Justin Wingate Director at TopGunMedia For press enquires or advertising opportunists please call or email: Email: info@topgunmedia.co.uk Telephone: 0141 556 4111

Industry News BUTEFEST GEARS UP FOR EPIC RETURN FOR ALL THE FAMILY THIS SUMMER ButeFest, the much-loved boutique west coast music festival, returns this summer after a two-year pause, bringing live pop and folk music to the island from Friday 29th - Sunday 31st July 2022. Held in the beautiful scenic setting of Ettrick Bay on the west side of the island, ButeFest offers the perfect island festival experience - without the long journey. It is just 50 minutes by car or train from Glasgow followed by a short 35-minute ferry crossing. With around 70 acts playing across three stages over the weekend, the festival offers a musical experience for the whole family, alongside craft workshops and stalls with local and Scottish produce. This year’s line-up includes a host of audience favourites including bagpiping superstars, the Red Hot Chilli Pipers, popfavourites Scouting for Girls, Gaelic folk group Mànran, and indie folk band Elephant Sessions, alongside local and upcoming talent such as feel-good Rothesay favourites The Upbeat Beatdown and Greenock indie talent Fallen Arches, who have performed the festival every year since its inception. At ButeFest people of all ages can soak up the festival atmosphere, with day and weekend tickets available, and a campsite within walking distance of the main festival arena. The festival also champions a strong volunteer programme that helps those involved gain valuable life and career experience and new skills, boost their confidence, make new connections and become part of the close-knit ButeFest community. A team of around 100 volunteers will help make ButeFest’s return a reality this year, bringing the fun in the children’s area, sorting out tickets and making stand-out site art with recycled materials.

CHEF DEAN BANKS’ DULSE RESTAURANT AND BAR NOW OPEN Dulse, the latest addition to celebrity chef Dean Banks’ family of businesses, is now fully open as both wine bar and restaurant across two floors. The bar opened earlier this month, offering high-end cocktails, wines and sensational small plates based on Dean’s love of Scottish produce and in particular seafood, as well as his own premium drinks brands Mond Vodka and Lunun Gin as house spirits. And now the upstairs restaurant has launched too, serving up stunning food in beautiful, cosy surroundings – so whether you relax in the downstairs bar with a bite, or upstairs in the restaurant, the mood and the premium quality remain the same. Dean said: “I’m so happy Dulse is now fully open and it’s exactly as I planned – I love it. It’s the perfect neighbourhood restaurant you want to drop in for a drink, a few bites, and end up spending a long afternoon or evening with friends old and new enjoying stellar food and drinks.” 4

RAIL ISSUES CONTINUE TO IMPACT ON SCOTTISH HOSPITALITY BUSINESSES As next week’s major rail strike scheduled to take place south of the Border looms, the Scottish licensed trade has reiterated its previous warning that the impact on tourism and hospitality businesses working to recover after the pandemic could be heavily impacted. Colin Wilkinson, managing director of the SLTA (Scottish Licensed Trade Association), said that while ScotRail’s return to a full timetable this week was to be welcomed, the strike in England on July 27 – next Wednesday – would affect services from London to Scotland. There will also be a negative impact on rail services within Scotland. “Rail operators have confirmed that they will run just 20% of normal services across only half of the UK network during next Wednesday’s strike with trains operating for just 11 hours, between 7.30am and 6.30pm,” he said. “This means the last services from London to Scotland will leave in the early afternoon, throwing the plans of tourists and people on business into disarray. “While the weather-related delays and disruption to services in Scotland and other parts of the country this week are outwith the control of train operators, the situation has done nothing to help beleaguered hospitality operators whose staff have difficulties getting to and from work and whose customers simply won’t bother going out if getting there and home again is so cumbersome.” ontradescotland.co.uk

Brand News

MALIBU INVITES CONSUMERS TO ‘DO WHATEVER TASTES GOOD’

The UK’s no.1 coconut rum brand is welcoming consumers to the Malibu world with its new brand positioning. A world where people embrace the summer mindset all year round and “Do Whatever Tastes Good”. Live now and running throughout July, the above-the-line creative will be unmissable on social channels, digital OOH, and BVOD. Later this month, Malibu is also inviting consumers to enter a world of zero judgement in an immersive experience that turns the traditional courtroom into a tropical celebration of authenticity. Malibu’s new media campaign consists of a colour-drenched film introducing new energy, confidence and year-round summer vibes to the popular drink, and encourages everyone to get into the summer mindset all year round. The advert takes viewers into the world of Malibu on ‘Coco’ the coconut horse, where they find a hyper real, inclusive space where everyone is doing what they like, whenever they like. Whether that’s sipping a Piña Colada in the summer while shamelessly enjoying pop hits, or adding pineapple as the ultimate pizza topping, Malibu says: “Do Whatever Tastes Good.”

To drive further awareness of the new brand positioning, ‘Malibu’s Courtside Confessions’ will take over the outdoor terrace at Brixton Jamm on 22nd and 23rd July. Bringing a splash of sunshine to South London, Malibu will reward those who share their guilty pleasures and an all-singing-alldancing judge and jury will sentence them to complimentary cocktails and pizzas, branded merchandise and bar tabs at local On-Trade venues. All guests will receive a Malibu RTD upon arrival, and can choose from a menu of refreshing Malibu cocktails including a Piña Colada and Watermelon Mojito, whilst they enjoy immersive performances from world-leading alternative choir, London Gospel Choir, and a selection of DJs provide the soundtrack. Marnie Corrigan, Brand Director at Pernod Ricard UK comments, “Malibu is a place where summer is a mindset, residents serve all sunshine and no shade. It’s about showing up confidently as your authentic self and being free to do what you love. Just like the most outlandish playlist, crazy food pairing or cushiest velour sweatpants, Malibu is deliciously uncomplicated. This campaign invites consumers to ‘Do Whatever Tastes Good’, to embrace their guilty pleasures and enjoy drinking their favourite Malibu cocktail or drink, and our new campaign features a wide range of moments and new ways in which to enjoy Malibu, that’s unapologetically you.” Demonstrating the continued popularity of the brand, Malibu has a 25% share of the Specialities category. This summer, Malibu will also be present at festivals including We Are Festival and South Facing, sampling its range of RTDs and offering branded merchandise to drive consideration amongst its Gen Z audience. Malibu is also teaming up with beauty salons across the UK by sending out exclusive mini fridges stocked with delicious Malibu RTDs for consumers to enjoy whilst being pampered.

COLD TOWN SIGNS DEAL WITH LOCAL MUSICIAN CALLUM BEATTIE Headline artist Callum Beattie has signed a new sponsorship deal with the craft brewery company. A good friend of OnTrade Scotland, having headlined The 1st Birthday Bash Last year helping raise over £16,000 for The BEN, the 32-year-old singer-songwriter will collaborate with Cold Town Beer in the lead-up to the release of his second album, VANDALS, released in the autumn of this year. As part of the collaboration, four of Callum’s singles from the new album will be filmed at Cold Town House, the site of Cold Town Beer’s microbrewery, taproom and bar in Edinburgh, and there are plans in the pipeline to create a one-off brew to help raise funds for a charity close to his heart. Callum will be provided with merchandise to wear and give away to fans, and Cold Town Beer will also be producing exclusive ‘Callum X Cold Town merchandise available to purchase online. The Edinburgh local – who recently won Forth One’s Artist of the Year Award – will also be taking to the floor at Cold Town House in a social media video series called ‘Callum’s Kitchen’ to help promote and encourage people to consider hospitality as a career. Louise MacLean, Business Development Director of Cold Town Beer, said: “Callum has been a dream to work with so far and this is only the beginning of our partnership. Commenting on the sponsorship, Callum said: “I’ve always loved Cold Town Beer - their ethos is the same as mine, and I love working with them on a creative and a business level. Exciting times ahead!” 5

A BAR FIT FOR THE CITY THAT NEVER SLEEPS Wiggle Room, New York City I

6

n our continuing feature to try and bring you inspiration from other venues in cities around the world, this month we visit Wiggle Room in The Big Apple - a city so good the named it twice the always open always lively New York City, New York. ontradescotland.co.uk

Finding a place to dance downtown during the summertime can be a nearly impossible. All the hip places have lines wrapped around the block (thanks in part toInstagram & TikTok!) and are typically filled with summer interns those wannabe financial analysts and bankers who have made their yearly descent onto the city, think Suits but in Zara & Moss Bros instead of Tom Ford & Prada Besides that, the city is notoriously sweaty this time of year. You want me to leave the comfort of my airconditioned hotel and wait in a deathly humid subway station just to go rub up against strangers’ sweat-soaked backs on an equally hot dance floor? No thank you. But at weekends, New Yorkers just can’t fight that dancin’ feeling. Luckily, there’s a new East Village bar that’s worth the sticky trip downtown. Previously the home of the bi-level cocktail lounge Drexler’s, the Wiggle Room is a two-floor dance club and bar on Avenue A, near the corner of Houston St, from the team behind other much-loved East Village and Lower

East Side establishments Mister Paradise, Pretty Ricky’s and Boulton & Watt. We had the chance to check out the East Village’s latest nightlife spot. Here are our takeaways: A LAIDBACK UPSTAIRS BAR WITH IMPRESSIVELY STRONG COCKTAILS Entering the Wiggle Room, you’re first greeted by the bar’s upstairs, a somewhat simple, but beautifully designed space with a wood-paneled ceiling and Venetian walls. The soft color scheme is a nice alternative to the glowing neon disco bar downstairs (which we’ll get to later) and cements the upper story as a sort of laidback sanctuary if you need a break from the club. It also stars its main bar — a long, wrap-around bar with chic forest green tiles and matching colored barstools. Beyond the stools, there’s a couple of other tables to chill at (if they aren’t occupied.) But if they are, the upstairs is large enough to stand and chat comfortably while sipping on the bar’s rotating selection of draft cocktails and 7

made-to-order signature cocktails, a list created by Beverage Director and former Cote bartender Will Krepop. Prepare to snap a picture because the presentation is half the reason the Wiggle Room’s hand-crafted cocktails are standouts. Martini glasses with exaggerated stems and curved glass tumblers are the fun, Insta-worthy vessels for the unique-tasting cocktails that have even greater unusual names like “hot lava,” “dog balloon animal” and “a six on the richter scale.” Of the seven cocktails offered, I had a taste of four and found the “hot lava,” a pleasantly spicy and flavorful Blanco tequila and ayuuk -based drink with hot honey, toasted sesame and pineapple to be my favorite. The bar’s on-tap espresso martini coming in at a close second. Beyond aesthetics and flavor, though, and arguably more importantly, these cocktails pack a real punch - and at $16-$17 a pop, they should! I’ve had many an overpriced cocktail in my day, in New York City especially, where a $15+ drink is the norm. I’m willing to pass over my credit card (if the vibe’s right), but typically cap off at two, then try to switch to something more cost-effective. But at the Wiggle Room, two full cocktails (plus sips of two others) carried me through to the end of the night. I was sufficiently tipsy. And ready to dance. A VIBEY DANCE FLOOR WITH FUNKY TUNES AND A DISCO BALL 8

The downstairs of the Wiggle Room is where the wiggling happens. Squiggly neon lights and a disco ball overlook the bar’s medium-sized dance floor, and if you can weed your way through the crowd, there’s a second, smaller bar in the back. The Wiggle Room plays a nice curation of funk, disco, soul and house tracks spun by a weekly rotation of notable and up-and-coming DJs. On a warm-weather Friday night, the dance floor was decently packed by the time I made my way down there at around midnight, with patrons movin’ and groovin’ under the colored disco lights. And despite the full dance floor, I found myself dancing comfortably. Largely because … THE MUSIC IS BUMPING AND THE AIR-CONDITIONING IS PUMPING I can safely say that the Wiggle Room has been the coldest bar/club I’ve been to in recent memory. Maybe that’s a weird detail to note, but my friends and I thought it was a critical component of our experience. We’re used to profusely sweating in dark, confined spaces that are stingy on the A/C, so we notice and appreciate a continuous blast of cool air. I’d recommend hitting the Wiggle Room on a trip to the city that never sleeps, have a couple of cocktails (or however many you can handle) at the upstairs bar and be sure to get all of your talking out of the way before you head downstairs. Then dance the night away on the coolest dance floor in the city, literally. ontradescotland.co.uk

Sing When You're Are Winning W

e take a look at a venue that is hitting the right note with its customers and providing an experience that is by no means flat - Cosmopolitan Karaoke Bar.

Cosmopol was born on St Valentines day in 2007..Karaoke is our passion..we do it better..longer and harder than anyone else..we guarantee the best sound..stage and experience to let anyone be a superstar. Since reopening after a long road the venue are delighted to have been able to stick to their roots. A wee bit more attention to stage sanitation by way of proprietary microphone sanitisers which allows sparkling mics for every singer of every song. They are currently working on implementing a mobile app for song requests to allow singers to choose songs and post requests directly from the comfort of their own wee seat. The superstar experience is the lifeblood of Cosmopol. A main elevated stage, lights, smoke, cracking sound, a roaring audience, an exhilarating experience.

Being cosmopolitan is what the venue and staff are all about. It’s in the name and they embrace that wholeheartedly, everything from new and emerging brands right back to the classic favourites. If you want it and they can get our hands on it, you’ll have it. The focus for the venue moving forward ... Simples, to continue with what they do best, Glasgow’s premier Karaoke venue right through to the wee small hours. The venue has a message for all its customers. “We would love to thank each and every one of our wonderful customers who provided such fantastic and unwavering support to us whilst we were closed, without you guys we couldn’t have made it through, we’re absolutely thrilled to be opening our doors once again to out lovely superstars”. 13

AT THE BAR X COLD TOWN BEER COLLABORATION GOES LIVE

I

T’S TIME TO GET COLD!!!!!! COLD TOWN BEER X AT THE BAR launch a unique brew collaboration to support venues.

OnTrade Scotland & Cold Town Beer, part of the Signature Group, have come together in a unique collaboration to bring a product to the bar with the customer in mind and the venue. ColdTown x AT THE BAR Pilsner is looking to embrace the drinking habits of a new generation of customers that don’t drink traditional “pints” and to give venues a better option than bottles for storage, convenience, cost and environmental reasons. Louise Maclean Business Development Director for Signature Group said, “This collaboration with On Trade Scotland magazine and our Cold Town Beer offers a cracking opportunity to support the trade and celebrate the success of our industry after two distressing years. We have created a special brew as part of this joint venture with On Trade Scotland Magazine & AT THE BAR and look forward to raising a COLD can with you all at the nearest bar over the next few months.” Justin Wingate Head of OnTrade Scotland & host of the AT THE BAR Show said, “We are really proud to collaborate with Cold Town Beer & Signature Group on this unique partnership. Drinking habits have changed in the younger generation (20-35 age group) when they are in venues as they don’t tend to order “pints” as in most venues like nightclubs, festivals, gigs etc they are in plastic cups which are not great, and not great for the venue either the only other alternative are bottles which come with their own challenges and cost implications. Bringing a canned alternative that is not only a great product but really stands out on the bar, provides a more environmentally friendly cost-effective alternative. Justin continued, It’s a little nod to the 80s also when brands like Red Stripe, Schlitz, Suppuro etc were a massive trend but with a modern twist. We want to support venues and the industry as much as possible and we believe that with this collaboration we, along with Signature Group can offer a great, relevant product which provides a great margin for the venue & an ICE COLD product to the customer.” To find out more and to preorder your stock email, Ruth Kerr, at ruth.kerr@coldtownbeer.com NOW!!!

ONLINE WILLS - A GOOD IDEA OR A POTENTIAL MINEFIELD? Joe Davies, Head of Private Client at Gilson Gray, considers wills and whether it makes a difference if you do this online or instruct a solicitor. In short, to protect your family and your business, you must check everything carefully. At Gilson Gray our private client team have spent time considering the terms and conditions of several

unregulated online will writing companies (excellent sleep therapy). Comparing this to the service offered by us and other solicitors, it is clear many of the unregulated online will writing companies follow a similar model. They cater to the volume will writing market and provide fairly simple wills at a low price. The websites provide access and while popular for those worried about increasing prices, in general they are not advisable. There are some serious pitfalls to be aware of. Does your will do what it said on the tin? One of the most concerning issues is some of the online offerings will not accept any liability for making sure that the will produced is “legally correct” for your situation. This is very basic. We will do that - it is a very important aspect of the service Gilson Gray offers. Online companies often exclude any form of liability for making sure that the person writing the will knew, understood, and approved the contents of the will. Again, a really basic part of the service and another good reason to instruct a solicitor. Solicitors also have professional indemnity insurance and that protects you and yours. What about lack of capacity, fraud, and undue influence?

Joe Davies - Head Of Private Client

Lack of capacity, fraud, and undue influence can leave a will open to challenge and could render it unenforceable. The unregulated online will writing companies typically exclude any liability for verifying these crucial parts of the will writing process as well as checking the identity of their clients.

If these issues are not raised or checked at the appropriate time then the will writing process may not give you the peace of mind that you want. You will want to limit any risk of your will being open to challenge and an expensive court action.

complexity. You may need to consider blended families or differences of opinions. Also establishing trusts for young or disabled beneficiaries, minimising the impact of a legal rights claim, or protecting succession and business interests.

Solicitors owe strict duties of care to their clients and must be alert to issues such as capacity, fraud, and undue influence, ensuring they obtain full and independent instructions from a capable client. We include these services as standard terms but online companies do not.

If a problem were to arise, your family or loved ones may find it difficult to raise a claim against a company that has excluded all liability and is not a regulated or fully insured firm of solicitors. These issues are can be encountered many years after the will has been signed and after a loved one’s death. The professional requirements on solicitors give you much better protection.

Does the service include legal advice? Many of the unregulated online will writing companies provide helpful ‘guidance’ but their websites often use specific terminology such as “guidance” as opposed to “legal advice” as largely they are not qualified solicitors and do not create a solicitor-client relationship. The legal advice provided by a solicitor is invaluable, even in simple cases. The nature and composition of modern families often presents a certain level of

Instructing a solicitor is a crucial aspect of the will writing service. A solicitor is there to ensure that your will, and that of family and friends, is fit for purpose and reflects their wishes. Our team at Gilson Gray have developed a will writing tool to help you get started. It can be accessed here and feel free to try it out: https://gilsongray.co.uk/legal-services/individual/ private-client-services/make-your-will-using-our-online-willquestionnaire/.

Contact Joe to discuss any will matters or Jo Millar to discuss any legal matters, both on the dedicated On Trade email - ontrade@gilsongray.co.uk.

The right advice has never been more important. We’re honoured to have been chosen as the exclusive partner of OnTrade Magazine Scotland.
