Dear Alumni and Friends, This is an exciting time at OC. Just in the past few weeks, we had two students named among the best in the United States for their scholarship and leadership. Cody Milner was named a Newman Civic Scholar. And Parker LaMascus is OC’s first-ever student to be named a Goldwater Scholar. A few weeks ago, our aircraft design team placed fifth at an international contest. Of course, we don’t even offer Aeronautical Engineering, but we beat the University of Michigan and the University of Texas. But, who’s keeping score? The Princeton Review again honored OC’s gaming and animation program as one of the top programs in the nation. Again, I’m not keeping track, but we beat out Texas A&M, MIT, North Carolina State, Purdue, Cornell, Case Western Reserve, and the University of Tulsa. Our ethics team again placed in the top 10 nationally after winning its fifth straight state championship competing against the likes of OU and OSU. And our own Tau Sigma was named the best history chapter in the nation for the 21st straight year! Speaking of history, our annual History Speaks event in February welcomed Diane Nash, one of the foremost civil rights leaders from the turbulent 60s. And another sellout crowd packed Hardeman Auditorium to hear famous travel writer Rick Steves inspire us to experience other cultures. Current Oklahoma governor Mary Fallin and former Governor and First Lady Frank and Cathy Keating joined us at our recent Associates Gala, where we honored the Green Family of Hobby Lobby fame with the Lee Allan Smith Spirit of Oklahoma Award. We’ve been blessed to feature remarkable items from The Green Collection collection of biblical artifacts here on campus, and we’re excited to see the Greens open the magnificent new Museum of the Bible in Washington, D.C., this fall. Our spring commencement ceremonies gave us the chance to honor Don Millican for his 15 years of service chairing OC’s

Board of Trustees. He and his wife Donna have helped transform OC in so many positive ways, and I’m grateful they’re not going anywhere. Don will continue to serve on the board and they’ll be hanging out at this place they call home quite a bit. And home’s getting better thanks to the smashing success of our Thrive! campaign. We’re meeting needs with new academic programs. Our campus dining experience is getting a dramatic makeover with great new options like Alfredo’s, Chick-fil-A, and the new Brew coffee shop. Hartman Place. Das Millicanhaus. The Citizens Bank Finance Lab. Cail Auditorium. The Eckhart Nursing Classroom. The Ethos Spiritual Life Program. Our alumni and friends are making our students’ college life – and learning – better than ever. And we thank you. There are so many ways our students are touching and changing lives, and I hope you’re blessed by our cover story on page 12. For this competitive president, I’m proud that story tells of our students winning the Love’s Entrepreneur’s Cup statewide contest (formerly known as the Governor’s Cup) in only our second year competing! But the trophy and accolades pale in comparison to the impact these young people are making. Thanks to the heartfelt passion of one of our graduate engineering students, the help of faculty mentors, and the inspired determination of six OC undergrads, a man with ALS who’s lost the ability to speak can tell his wife, “I love you.” The eye-tracking system our very own students developed has given Carl Phelps a new lease on life, and it promises to do the same for many others down the road. This is just one example of how OC is Home for Life Changers. Thank you for changing lives in the ways God has called you. Thank you for pouring into and praying for your university. We look forward to seeing you on campus soon.

VOICE FOR THE VOICELESS OC STUDENT PROJECT GIVES MAN WITH ALS A LIFT IN LIFE

12 VI SI O NSPRIN G2 017

For patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s Disease), losing the ability to speak is devastating. Students at Oklahoma Christian realized the eyes are the key to giving people with ALS a voice again. A team of OC engineering students has developed VisuALS, which features eye-tracking technology and textto-speech functionality that allows patients to communicate. The project originated a few years ago when OC graduate engineering student Ash Srinivas wanted to help a friend with ALS; his friend had lost control of his voice and muscles. Ash and Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering Steve Maher developed the beginnings of a prototype, and Ash’s friend provided invaluable feedback before he passed away. Several OC undergraduate engineers made the project their mission and made improvements over the next couple of years, setting the stage for a demonstration to an ALS support group in January. A man named Carl Phelps used the system for 45 minutes to audibly speak for the first time in months. The first thing he said to his wife, Janice, was “I love you.” Carl’s health had deteriorated quickly. ALS had taken away his ability to speak or eat. He was losing five pounds a week, and he desperately wanted to communicate with his loved ones. Janice implored the team to act fast. “Carl will be counting the days until he hears from you,” she said. The VisuALS software was still in development and wasn’t stable yet, but Maher encouraged the team to develop a

solution to Carl’s urgent need. “When finished, VisuALS will allow a user to e-mail, browse the web, keep a journal, control lights and sound an alarm, in addition to the text-to-speech functionality,” said OC entrepreneur-inresidence Russ McGuire (MBA 16), the team’s coach and mentor. “But all Carl

wanted was text-to-speech. Professor Maher reminded the team they had an extra eye-tracking bar, and they confirmed that Carl’s existing tablet could run the software.” In late January, the team installed the software and configured the hardware in Carl’s home in Chickasha, Oklahoma. “Carl’s lively and witty personality was able to shine through thanks to the VisuALS app, giving him the freedom to converse with us as he wished,” said Aubrey Gonzalez, a senior electrical and computer engineering major. “The visit ended in happy tears, with Carl and Janice saying a prayer for our future success in this endeavor.” Using VisuALS to “type” his thoughts, Carl said, “This literally gave me a lift in life. It was a lifesaver. I love this class and I thank God for them.” Janice said OC’s system was a timely, precious gift after Carl lost the ability to use other communication aids. “We’re just thankful for what all it can do right now, and I don’t know what we would have done without it,” Janice said.

“I’m just really grateful for OC. There are no words to tell you how much we appreciate it.” Armed with this life-changing system and an innovative business plan, OC’s students won the 2017 Love’s Entrepreneur’s Cup competition. It was yet another challenge met by the VisuALS team, comprised of Aubrey and fellow ECE majors Josh Bilello, Preston Kemp, and Tyler Sriver, plus accounting major Jevon Seaman and marketing major Kevin McGuire. “Winning first place is a testament to the hard work and dedication of these great students,” Maher said. “They met every challenge head-on, and they wouldn’t take ‘no’ for an answer. I know their work will improve the quality of life for ALS patients.” Just as multiple OC students brought VisuALS to where it is today, more students will take up the cause to take it into the future. With Russ’ guidance, Jevon and other young entrepreneurs hope to take VisuALS to market at a $3,000 price point, just a fraction of the $20,000 cost for existing systems. The business plan also features crowdfunding assistance, which will make VisuALS even more affordable and accessible to people in need. For now, though, the VisuALS system has given Carl his voice back, and he’s helped identify ways to make it better for future patients. “This relationship gave the team realworld feedback and helped a precious child of God reconnect with his family,” Russ said. IN GOOD HANDS MILLICAN PASSES TORCH TO BREWER AFTER 15 YEARS AS OC BOARD CHAIR

14 VI SI O NSPRIN G2 017

After a distinguished 15-year tenure chairing OC’s Board of Trustees, Don Millican passed the torch to Mark Brewer in April. (Read more about Don and Mark’s noteworthy accomplishments on page 28 in Vision News). As Mark moves into the chairman role and Don continues to serve as a trustee, they reflected on their board service, talked about this place we call home, and shared their hopes and dreams for OC. HOW DID YOU FIRST GET INVOLVED WITH OC? DON: When we moved to Oklahoma City in 1975, we went to church with many who either worked for OC or had graduated from OC. In 1978, Howard Leftwich asked me to teach income tax on an adjunct basis, which I did several times in the ensuing years. MARK: I was asked by Mike O’Neal at Alfred Branch’s suggestion to join the board. I think I had only been on the campus two or three times prior to that first conversation. WHAT SKILLS FROM YOUR CAREER DO YOU LEAN ON MOST AS A TRUSTEE? DON: Edwin Friedman coined a term called “non-anxious presence.” His point was that a key element of leadership is a calm and steady hand in the midst of turmoil, and to be visible and present during those times. In the financial world, you encounter a great deal of stress and turmoil over the years. Perhaps that experience has helped me face some difficult times on the board. MARK: Operational experiences in manufacturing and IT have helped me a lot in my thinking as a board member. Getting things done, collaboration experiences, and working across geographies, cultures and the like all have helped shape how I think about problems and opportunities at OC. WHAT SHOULD PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES? DON: I could not be more proud of the talent and energy of the members of our board – many different backgrounds and expertise, each person dedicated to the success of the school. During my tenure as chair, I encouraged open debate and celebrated non-unanimous votes. There was no rubberstamping. These dedicated servants expressed their strong and informed opinions, voices were heard, and then a vote taken. Then we all supported the decision. WHAT MOTIVATES YOUR DESIRE TO CHAMPION ETHOS AND SIMILAR STUDENT SERVICES? MARK: I think students today have it harder than when I was going to school. There is pressure to fit in, look like someone else, succeed, and do it all. It’s overwhelming. So I’m interested in services like Ethos and U!Shine and others that are here to help students find their way. WHY SHOULD STUDENTS CHOOSE OC AS THEIR COLLEGE HOME? DON: The integration of faith and learning is the most

important reason in my book. But it is also crucial for students and parents to understand that the quality of education is superior to state schools (and I went to a state school). Nothing can match having full professors teaching the majority of the undergraduate classes. MARK: I’ve come to realize the importance of an education with a Christian worldview. There are a lot of confusing and conflicting views out there; some are based on well-developed thinking, but many others are not. Having a framework to knit everything together is very much needed. Caring and concerned faculty and staff make a difference, too. Go to OC, be taught with a Christian worldview by great people, be surrounded by other good people who are trying to do the same. That is why you should go to OC. WHAT DO YOU HOPE STUDENTS TAKE AWAY FROM OC? MARK: God created this universe and stepped into it 2,000 years ago. Despite all the trouble and confusion, there is a story unfolding and there is a part to play by all of us. Getting a solid education with a Christian worldview can make all the difference in people’s lives across a lifetime. DON: A deeper and more resilient faith, a lifelong love of learning, an understanding that truth is not fragile, and an understanding that faith and academics are not incompatible. WHAT INITIAL GOALS AND OBJECTIVES DO YOU HAVE AS CHAIR? MARK: I’d like to see us raise enrollment by a meaningful amount. That means: 1) new programs and services; 2) more recruiting of high school students; and 3) more services to retain those who choose to come here. I think we can do all these things. WHAT MUST OC REMAIN COMMITTED TO MOVING FORWARD? DON: I often say the world does not need another secular liberal arts university. There are plenty of those. What the Dying of the Light (Burtchaell) and Quality with Soul (Benne) tell us is that a series of small decisions made over time pave the way from faith-based education to relativism to secularism. They tell us we must think through every decision to assess what it will mean to spiritual mission 20 and 30 years from now, together with decisions already made and those that may be made later as a result of the decision at hand. WHAT IS YOUR DREAM FOR OC? MARK: I’d like for OC to be a destination school where we are recognized in the United States as a great university with great academic teaching within a solid Christian worldview. DON: I believe it is possible for OC to be the absolute best in the country at integrating faith with learning. That does not mean we have learning, then have spiritual activities separately. It means we become the best at teaching academics within a Christian worldview. There is no reason we can’t claim that flag. No one else has claimed it.

THRIVE CAMPAIGN TOPS FUNDRAISING GOAL The Brew coffee shop (top and right) opened in April.

In June 2014, we launched a fundraising campaign unlike any we knew, Thrive. It was a bizarre animal in two major ways: it was fast (three years) and it was transparent (open goals and communication from start to finish). Today, as we’re set to close the formal campaign portion of Thrive, we’ve discovered this unique mix of ambition and authenticity can be difficult to manage. But, we’ve also discovered the “Thrive model,” hard or not, resonates unlike almost anything we’ve attempted before.

9,000 GIVERS MAKE OC BETTER FOR STUDENTS

18 VI SI O NSPRIN G2 017

Here are a few facts worth celebrating: • You’ve helped us complete 15 named projects. From Cail Auditorium in DAH, to Das Millicanhaus in Vienna, to our state-of-the-art gaming labs, to our deliciously tempting Chick-Fil-A, our students are living and working in vibrant new spaces that simply would not be without Thrive. • Beyond these 15, you invested more than $7.5 million in 250 other projects. Your fingerprints are on nearly every Kingdom-building work we do here. • We’ve taken you behind the curtain more than 60 times at oc.edu/thriveblog. We’ve explained how we fundraise, how we budget, and how we feel. • More than 9,100 different people and organizations have invested in Thrive.

On average, that’s more than four people (who aren’t parents or professors) lifting up every one of our undergrads. • Finally, you’ve given more than $32,275,000 to Thrive. That’s more than $20 a minute for three years. On a gifts-perdonor basis, those are the most successful fundraising minutes in OC’s history. You know by now that Thrive’s goal was $30 million, which means (drumroll) we did it ... and more! As we celebrate the campaign’s end, we’re also excited to tell you the Thrive model isn’t going anywhere just yet. We’ve committed to tackling the unfinished projects on our Thrive menu right now – and we want you in the know and plugged in with us for every twist and turn. So please join us in celebrating an historic win with Thrive and look forward to more candid stories from the fundraising front this next year. It’s going to be good! By Will Blanchard (07)

ENGINEERED FOR SUCCESS MASTER’S DEGREE PROPELS WOOD TO NEW HEIGHTS

“Diligent discipline and a lot of caffeine.” That’s what got James Wood through OC’s Master of Science in Engineering program. And that MSE degree in engineering management, earned in 2015, helped get him a promotion … plus recognition as “Engineer of the Year” at Tinker Air Force Base. “Getting a master’s degree has become almost mandatory to move past a certain point in your career,” said James, now Tinker’s lead avionics engineer on the B-2 Bomber. “It helped me reengage some of those skills I hadn’t touched in a while. It helped me do better and understand more. And frankly, having the degree means something. It gave me that extra edge.” James is a double graduate of Oklahoma Christian; he earned his bachelor’s degree in 1995. But after almost 20 years in the industry, James realized he’d benefit from a return to the classroom. The benefits of OC’s small class sizes and the rhythm of eight-week classes helped James as he navigated through the MSE program. OC’s night class format, uncommon for graduate engineering programs, was crucial in helping him balance school, work, and family obligations. He also loved the personal touch of regular access to his professors - the ability to email, call, or drop by the office to get questions answered. “Whenever you’re trying to get something done, you want to be able to talk to someone,” James said. “It was nice being able to do that.”

James said three classes in particular nail what he’s doing at Tinker, and gave him the tools to solve everyday problems - Systems Engineering, Systems Management, and Failure Analysis. And in the final analysis, James says getting an MSE degree is a no-brainer for engineers who want to succeed. “I’ve been approached by students who want to know whether they should go to work after they get their undergrad or keep going and pursue their master’s degree,” James said. “It isn’t an easy decision to make, but I really recommend you go for the master’s now. It will make a difference in your career path overall and help you reach goals you may not know you have. Most people get to the point where they wish they had done it. Do it now.” By Wes McKinzie (98) WATCH VIDEO TESTIMONIALS FROM OC GRADUATE STUDENTS AND ALUMNI. WWW.OC.EDU/VISION

BUILDING FAITH IN COMMUNITY Since receiving a master’s degree in ministry from OC’s Graduate School of Theology in 2005, Mitch Wilburn has used his studies to help navigate life-changing experiences. Mitch first heard the call of ministry growing up at Highland Oaks Church of Christ in Dallas. After serving as a youth minister at Park Plaza Church of Christ in Tulsa for 10 years, Mitch began to feel the call of God towards pulpit ministry. The Abilene Christian University grad was drawn to Oklahoma Christian to further his education. “The professors at OC do more than just disperse information. They really do care about you, and it’s through those relationships where the mentor-mentee relationship is formed,” Mitch said. “OC was also very practical. They go deep with intellectual thought and understanding the deepest parts of theology.” Upon his graduation from OC, Mitch became the preaching minister at Park Plaza. He has played a key role in numerous

22 VI SI O NSPRIN G2 017

initiatives, including community outreach programs and the addition of three new branches of the congregation. Mitch, whose wife Shannon is on OC’s Board of Trustees and whose son Jake is an OC senior, prioritizes community involvement both at Park Plaza and in his personal life. While he hopes people can show the love of Christ through serving at the food bank or Park Plaza’s clothing closet, he believes faith should be especially evident in the ordinary day-to-day. “The resurrection of Jesus brings about his resurrection in our lives, and so we now go and do what he did, and what through the Holy Spirit he is continuing to do through us,” Mitch said. “Through these efforts to do good, we hold out the Gospel of Christ to the world. We do it through our daily lives. Everything we do is about pointing the way to Jesus and being his disciples.” Although Mitch has seen success in Park Plaza’s continuing growth, he has also endured harsh realities.

EXECUTIVE DECISION

MERCY VP GROWS IN HER SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE WITH OC MBA Laurie Weathers is right where she wanted to be. With 30 years of healthcare administration experience, she has a dream job as vice president of business operations for Mercy Clinic. But despite her background and expertise, Laurie didn’t have an advanced degree like her peers did. She knew a master’s degree would be required if she ever wanted to move into another role. The cost and convenience of OC’s Master of Business Administration program was just what the doctor ordered. “Several things stood out to me about OC. My faith is very important to me so I felt I needed to find a school that would complement my faith and my beliefs,” she said. “With the proximity of where my home and my work are, and with the ways OC caters to a working executive, this program fit perfect for me.” The diversity of OC’s MBA program is distinctive. There are nine elective tracks to choose from in addition to a general degree, allowing professionals to get the skills and knowledge most relevant to their careers. OC’s Health Services Management concentration gave Laurie the chance to pursue more than a degree. “I was so excited to get back in and learn more about what’s changed about my particular field. There are things about leadership like emotional intelligence that we didn’t learn about 30 years ago. And there’s brand new technology we need to stay right up to the minute on in our field,” Laurie said. “It’s like training for a marathon; you have to do the training, you have to do the discipline to get to the finish.”

Laurie’s spiritual training started in our own backyard; her first church experience as a child was Vacation Bible School at Memorial Road Church of Christ. She’s made a lot of OC connections through the years. Laurie made two trips to Rwanda with former OC president Mike O’Neal and other representatives from Mercy and Oklahoma Christian. She’s gotten to know many OC graduates from Rwanda, and even attended the university’s first commencement ceremony in Kigali in 2014. And when Laurie began her journey toward that diploma, she found OC felt like … home. “All my classes are in one building. I park in one place. I can be here one evening a week and finish in a short time,” she said. “I wanted the camaraderie of the classroom. I really wanted stimulation with other professionals in similar fields and in similar places in their life. It’s been a really rewarding experience.” By Wes McKinzie (98)

WILBURN SHINES THROUGH JOY & PAIN Two years ago, Mitch fought and won a battle with cancer. But the battle wasn’t over. In December, he was diagnosed with Myasthenia gravis, an autoimmune neuromuscular disease. Although the illness has created new challenges, Mitch continues to press on, encouraged by Philippians 2:12-18. “The passage talks about shining like stars,” he said. “Stars shine because they’re on a backdrop of darkness. If everything is bright around you, you’re not going to shine that much, but if your context is trial, shadow, or darkness, you have that much more opportunity to shine and rejoice while you do it.” Mitch has used his battles to cultivate a platform for his ministry and to bless both his congregation and community. “Whatever trial comes your way can be your springboard to be a stronger witness of what God can do in the midst of that trial,” Mitch said. “What was meant for harm God uses for good.” By Hannah Brewster

CHILDHOOD AMBITION: It varied throughout my childhood: an astronaut, a famous author, a U.S. president, a Rockette, a WNBA star. I was challenged to reexamine what I previously believed to be true, and it was here I first connected with a world bigger than myself. FORMER SEAGATE EXEC SUCCEEDS MILLICAN AS OC BOARD CHAIR Dr. Mark Brewer, the outgoing senior vice president and chief information officer for Seagate Technology, became the 13th chairman of OC’s Board of Trustees in April. Brewer joined the OC board in 2003 and has served as vice chairman since 2006. He succeeds Don Millican, OC’s board chair since 2002. Millican, the chief financial Dr. Mark Brewer officer for Kaiser-Francis Oil Company, became an OC trustee in 1996 and is remaining on the board. The support of Mark and his wife Beth has been integral to OC’s campus dining enhancements, its innovative Ethos spiritual life initiative, and many other projects. “Dr. Mark Brewer has served as an OC trustee with distinction and will be a outstanding chairman,” OC president John deSteiguer said. “Wise, smart, articulate, spiritual, loyal, visionary, generous – he possesses all the attributes an ideal leader needs. Mark and Beth are dear friends, and they are, and will continue to be, a great blessing to the OC community.” Brewer recently stepped down from Seagate after leading all information technology operations worldwide for the company’s global operations. He also worked for AT&T Network Systems and AT&T Bell Laboratories. Brewer earned B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Oklahoma State University. He was recently inducted into the Hall of Fame for OSU’s College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology.

MILLICAN TESTIFIES ON CAPITOL HILL Invoking chapter 58 of Isaiah, outgoing OC board chair Don Millican spoke to the U.S. House Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies on the importance of funding early childhood programs, particularly those targeted to low-income families in March. “It tells me all of my religious practices Don Millican are worthless if I do not break the yoke of oppression. In my opinion, there is no greater yoke of oppression than that laid upon a child born in generational poverty – a child who did not choose the circumstances of his or her birth,” said Millican, chief financial officer of Kaiser-Francis Oil Company.

One of Millican’s co-panelists before the committee was actress Jennifer Garner, representing Save the Children. Millican, who will remain on OC’s board, stepped down as chair in April after a remarkable 15 years of leadership. Highlights of his tenure include the success of the $30 million Thrive! campaign, a comprehensive $34 million student residence project, and the construction of other facilities, including Lawson Commons, McGraw Pavilion, the Freede Centennial Tower, and the Noble Science Wing. The success and growth of OC’s academic programs included new master’s degrees in accounting, computer science, divinity, engineering, and theological studies, expanded undergraduate offerings, and the university’s reaffirmation of accreditation by the Higher Learning Commission in 2006 and 2016. Enrollment surged, with the top 12 enrollment totals in OC history coming in the last 12 years. OC remained on the forefront of educational technology, enjoyed a golden age of welcoming distinguished guest speakers to campus, and expanded its global reach through missions, a partnership with Rwanda, numerous exchange and study abroad programs, and the launch of OC’s Das Millicanhaus in Vienna.

Rowe originally served on OC’s board of trustees from 1999 to 2010, when he became a Life Trustee. A former U.S. Navy officer, Rowe is a certified public accountant who has helped build and operate retirement facilities that have served thousands of people and families. Dr. Tucker owns and operates Castle Hills Pediatrics in Carrollton, Texas. A former assistant to the city manager in Garland, Texas, she serves as medical director for Prestoncrest Church of Christ’s mission efforts in Guatemala and also has provided medical consultations in Ghana. Bonney serves as vice president and chief financial officer for RKI Energy Resources, LLC, and Prize Royalties, LLC. An Oklahoma Christian graduate with a bachelor’s degree in accounting, Bonney is an elder at Mayfair Church of Christ in Oklahoma City.

OC GRADS NAMED TO PRESIDENTIAL POSTS Lana Reynolds (81) will become president of Seminole State College this summer while Dr. Bill Pink (90) has been named president at Grand Rapids Community College in Michigan. Reynolds has served at Seminole State for more than three decades. She has worked in many roles, including English instructor, director of public relations, vice Lana Reynolds president for institutional advancement, and executive vice president. In 1991, she was selected as Seminole’s “Citizen of the Year.” In 2008, the OCPRA named her “Communicator of the Year.” She was also named as one of the Journal Record’s “50 Women Making a Difference” in the State of Oklahoma in 2000, 2012 and 2013 – bringing her into the “Circle of Excellence” for her three-time selection. Dr. Bill Pink “I hope my leadership provides our students with a strong academic background, exposure to liberal arts, and cultural experiences and opportunities to succeed in their careers and lives. I benefited from these things by attending OC,” Reynolds said. “I hope I will be able to emulate the Christian principles I witnessed at OC in my decisions and leadership of Seminole State.” After earning Scholar-Athlete honors as an OC basketball player, Pink has worked in education for more than 25 years. He held teaching, coaching, and administrative roles at York College, Cascade College, OC, the University of Oklahoma, the University of Central Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State University-Oklahoma City before joining Grand Rapids as vice president and dean for workforce development in 2015. “I’m honored and humbled to be named the 10th president of Grand Rapids Community College, and I’m grateful to the institutions that played a role in my development as a person and as a leader,” Pink said. “I value my days at OC both as a student and as a faculty member. I treasure those days, and the people who blessed my life there.” Reynolds and Pink join Andy Benton (Pepperdine University), Dr. Allison Garrett (Emporia State University), Dr. Stan Helton (Alberta Bible College), and Dr. Harold Shank (Ohio Valley University) as active college or university presidents in OC’s alumni ranks.

OC ENROLLMENT RISES TO RECORD HIGH Oklahoma Christian’s fall enrollment of 2,600 students was an all-time school record. OC also surpassed last year’s record for graduate enrollment; 600 students are pursuing master’s degrees in accountancy, business administration, computer science,

engineering, Christian ministry, divinity, or theological studies. This was OC’s fifth straight year of record enrollment. The top 12 enrollment totals in OC history have come in the last 12 years. “With our commitment to affordability and the addition of even more first-class academic programs to serve students, OC has become a destination point for students and families seeking an unmatched educational experience,” President John deSteiguer said. Oklahoma Christian had seven National Merit Scholars in this year’s freshman class and 35 overall, a per capita percentage that ranks among the state’s leaders. OC’s student body comes from 43 states and 49 countries.

OC UP IN U.S. NEWS BEST COLLEGE RANKINGS OC rose in the rankings and earned additional honors from U.S. News & World Report in the “Best Colleges 2017” guidebook. OC moved up to No. 41 on the “Best Regional Universities” list for the 15-state western region. This is the 18th straight year U.S. News & World Report has honored OC, which ranks second among Oklahoma schools on the regional list. The Princeton Review also listed OC as one of top schools in the 15-state western region. In addition to being among the state’s leaders with more than 40 National Merit Scholars enrolled last year, OC earned recognition on the U.S. News list of “A+ Schools for B Students,” which identifies great colleges where scholars with high school GPAs in the B range can thrive. U.S. News also identified OC as one of the top schools for veterans. The U.S. News rankings assess seven categories: assessment of excellence, graduation and retention rates, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources, the difference between actual and predicted graduation rates, and alumni giving. OC’s alumni giving rate (18 percent) ranks fourth in the western region while the university’s first-year retention rate ranks in the region’s top 25.

As Fitness Magazine’s Champion of Health and Fitness and Blue Cross and Blue Shield’s Champion of Oklahoma Health, Cornett has made great strides to make Oklahoma City healthier. In his recent State of the City address, he challenged Oklahomans to take mental health more seriously. According to the National Alliance on Mental Health, 73 percent of college students have experienced a mental health crisis. OC’s student-run Eagle PR team led the Not OK is OK campaign in partnership with the Eagles Health Initiative and U!Shine, a mental health organization founded by OC alumna Jennifer (Allcorn 97) Winton.

FOUR OC ALUMNI ELECTED TO STATE LEGISLATURE Mike Osburn, Mike Sanders, Tess Teague, and Dr. George Young were elected to the Oklahoma legislature in November. Teague (12) Mike Osburn Mike Sanders served as the Legislative Report Manager for the Journal Record’s Legislative Reporting Service at the Oklahoma Capitol, overseeing coverage of the entire legislative Tess Teague Dr. George Young process. She has also worked for Gov. Mary Fallin and for the Republican National Committee in Washington, D.C. Mike Osburn (90) is the new state representative in OC’s district, House District 81. He served as Gov. Frank Keating’s campaign manager and deputy chief of staff. He also served as state director for U.S. Senator Don Nickles. He now runs his own consulting firm in public affairs and event management. Sanders (97) worked on George W. Bush’s presidential campaign and has served in the Oklahoma State House since his election in 2008. His 2012 election set a state record when he received 95 percent of the vote from his district. Dr. Young (MA Ministry 98, MBA 06) retired in 2013 after serving as a pastor for 30 years. He is chief executive officer of Young Management Consulting, a mediation and nonprofit management and leadership development firm.

OC PARTNERS WITH KING FOR CHURCH RESOURCING, SERVICE Dr. Grady King’s heart for churches and his alma mater led him to a new role as a consultant helping OC serve churches. King (77) is vice president of HOPE Network, a group of ministers that mentors leaders and churches. The Oklahoma Christian graduate served in full-time preaching ministry from 1984 until his recent retirement from Dr. Grady King Mansfield Church of Christ in Texas. He is building on OC’s longtime work with churches to serve as a facilitator, visionary, and counselor to ministers, elders, and congregations.

He hosted 75 ministers for the new kerygma preaching conference in March, coordinates on- and off-campus luncheons for church leaders, and will lead OC’s Bible Lectures in October. “Healthy leaders and healthy churches are what I am all about,” King said. “It begins with listening and engaging church leaders in conversations that matter. After 40 years of congregational ministry, I deeply value being a friend to church leaders in practical and hopeful ways.”

LAMASCUS BECOMES OC’S FIRST GOLDWATER SCHOLAR A mechanical engineering major’s wind energy research gave Oklahoma Christian its first Barry Goldwater Scholar. A student in OC’s Honors Program, Parker LaMascus, was one of just two students selected from Oklahoma and among just 240 sophomores and juniors honored nationwide. The Goldwater Scholarship is the premier undergraduate Parker LaMascus award of its type in mathematics, the natural sciences, and engineering. “We are incredibly impressed and proud of Parker’s academic accomplishments,” OC president John deSteiguer said. “His pursuit of excellence is a natural fit with his Christ-like spirit, and he serves as an inspiration to students and staff alike.”

STUDENT RECEIVES SELECTIVE NEWMAN CIVIC FELLOWSHIP OC senior Cody Milner is among 274 students nationwide and just 10 in the state to be named a Newman Civic Fellow. Presented by Campus Connect, the honor recognizes students who have demonstrated an investment in finding solutions for challenges facing communities throughout the country. “Cody’s community, civic, and political service made him an excellent fit for this prestigious program,” said Dr. Jim Baird, director of OC’s Honors Program. “He has already interned or worked in multiple offices of elected and appointed officials while maintaining a 4.0 GPA, holding a double-major, and taking Honors classes. We are confident Cody has a very bright future in public service.”

ETHICS TEAM PLACES IN NATIONAL TOP 10 Oklahoma Christian won its fifth straight state title on the way to a 10th-place finish at the Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl. OC has placed in the national top 10 in three of the past four years. OC’s team swept all of its matches at the state and regional tournaments before going 2-1 at nationals, defeating Millikan University and the University of Nevada-Las Vegas before losing to the U.S. Military Academy, the eventual champion. “Ethics is the favorite part of my job,” said Dr. Jeff Simmons (90), team sponsor and the dean of OC’s College of Business

Administration. “I’m always so thoroughly impressed by the students because they do a phenomenal job, and they even challenge me. It’s an honor to work with them.”

AIRPLANE DESIGN TEAM 5TH AT INTERNATIONAL CONTEST OC beat out 29 other student teams from the United States, Canada, Egypt, India, Mexico, China, and Poland to place fifth in the SAE Aero Design West competition. Students had to design and fly a radio-controlled airplane that carried 27 tennis balls and a half-pound steel plate, which represented passengers and luggage. “I could not be more proud of our OC engineering students,” said Brad Buxton, faculty sponsor and assistant professor of mechanical engineering. “We really enjoyed representing OC with a strong top-five finish.”

PROGRAMMERS PLACE FIRST AT REGIONAL SITE, 11TH OVERALL OC placed first among Oklahoma universities in a computer programming contest featuring the region’s largest schools. The OC team placed first at its site, 11th overall among universities competing in four locations, and second out of the 23 teams with undergraduate students only. OC has placed in the top three in the undergraduate category and in the top three for Oklahoma universities in four of the past five years. “It is remarkable that a school of our size can compete on an even basis with the largest universities in the region,” said David North (79), OC’s director of computer science advancement. “Our goal next year will be to win the South Central Regional and move on to the World Finals.”

FIRST MSCS, BS/MS GRADS EARN THEIR DEGREES Last fall, 37 students comprised the first graduating class for OC’s new Master of Science in Computer Science program, earning their degrees in just one year. OC also offers a two-year program that is popular among engineers at Tinker Air Force Base. In April, Olivier Tuyishime and Jean Paul Iradukunda became the first OC students to graduate with both their BS and MS degrees in computer science. The combination program allows undergraduate students to begin graduate work prior to receiving their bachelor’s degree. Students can count nine credit hours of their graduate work toward their bachelor’s degree. “Having a master’s degree in CS will open a wider range of jobs and potentially provide them a higher starting salary,” Director of Computer Science Advancement David North (79) said. “I have seen studies that show a $10,000 increase.” CNN, Money Magazine, and U.S. News and World Report list multiple computer science professions among the nation’s top 10 jobs in salary and availability.

OC EXPANDS ONLINE, MBA OFFERINGS Adult students in OC’s Graduate School of Business have new online options. Students pursuing OC’s Master of Accountancy degree can now take all 30 hours online if they choose. The MAcc degree program provides enough hours to qualify to sit for the CPA exam and equips graduates for careers in major corporations and public accounting firms. In addition to its MBA program – offered both on site and online – OC’s Master of Accountancy program is one of just two MAcc programs in the state offered completely online. “Several of our MBA and MAcc students live and work outside of the Oklahoma City metro area. Our online format gives students the same course content and connectivity, but with greater convenience and flexibility,” said Dr. Ken Johnson, chair of OC’s Graduate School of Business. OC also has added Nonprofit Organization Management as a ninth elective track in the MBA program, which graduated its 2,000th student at April’s spring commencement ceremonies. OC also offers MBA tracks in Accounting, Finance, Health Services Management, Human Resources, International Business, Leadership and Organizational Development, Marketing, and Project Management.

OC STUDENTS RAISE MONEY FOR STANLEY HUPFELD ACADEMY OC’s 49th-annual Spring Sing featured a couple of firsts: the first championship for women’s club Iota Kappa Phi and the start of a philanthropic effort OC students hope will become an annual tradition. A silent auction raised $7,082.55 for Stanley Hupfeld Academy at Western Village, an inner-city elementary school. Many OC students serve as mentors there, and children from the school visit campus each year during Earn Your Wings to fly kites and spend the day with OC students. “Almost everyone on campus has met a kid from Stanley Hupfeld through kite day or tutoring,” sophomore Paige Arter said. “So to have a beneficiary this close to the OC community is great because we are able to put a face with the cause.”

THERAPY DOGS FETCH PRAISE FROM OC STUDENTS OC has gone to the dogs … and students love it. TOTO (the Trained On-Campus Therapy-Dog Organization) gives students regular access to trained therapy dogs. The new initiative builds on the extensive counseling, health, and wellness resources offered by Oklahoma Christian. The TOTO program consists of six certified therapy dogs owned by volunteer OC faculty and staff members. The six therapy dogs and their owners went through an extensive sixweek training program. Along with scheduled events, the volunteers can bring their dogs to campus during the day for students.

BENNETT ELECTED TO OKLAHOMA SPORTS HALL OF FAME Jeff Bennett (70) earned the highest athletic honor ever received by a former OC student-athlete with his induction into the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame. “I was kind of surprised because I figured it had been long enough that if it was going to happen, it would have happened,” Bennett said. “But it’s exciting to know you’re in the company of the best Jeff Bennett athletes in Oklahoma. There are not many track and field athletes in the Hall of Fame. I’m honored to be among that group.” Bennett won NAIA national championships in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles in 1968 and in the decathlon in 1969 and 1970. He also won the Amateur Athletic Union decathlon in 1972, then placed fourth in the event at the 1972 Summer Olympics. He was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame in 1976 and was a charter honoree of the OC Athletic Hall of Fame in 1991. In his post-Olympic life, he served two stints as an assistant track and field coach at OC and worked as the university’s associate dean of students for 13 years after spending spent almost three decades in public education. In 2003, he retired as a lieutenant colonel after serving for 32 years in the U.S. Army National Guard. “Jeff is extremely generous with his time in working with student-athletes,” Athletic Director David Lynn (95) said. “He is a true example of what it means to be Christ-like in everything he has done to represent OC. We are so proud that he is being recognized with this great honor.”

HAYS RECEIVES PRESTIGIOUS HONOR AT FINAL FOUR Longtime OC men’s coach Dan Hays was honored in April by the National Association of Basketball Coaches with a prestigious “Guardians of the Game” award for service. CBS Sports reporter Allie LaForce presented him with the award at a special ceremony in Phoenix during the NCAA Men’s Final Four. Dan Hays The positive influence of Hays, who stepped down in February 2016 after 33 seasons at OC and 38 as a head college coach, has spread far and wide – not just through the players he coached, but also through his work at OC Cage

32 VI SI O NSPRIN G2 017

Camps and USA Basketball as well as numerous community service projects, such as free clinics he and his staff conducted for underprivileged children and at juvenile facilities. “I am honored and humbled by the NABC selecting me for this award,” Hays said. “I have always tried to be more than just a basketball coach everywhere I worked. My last 33 years at Oklahoma Christian University were great. There are so many people I coached with, worked with, and taught that there is no way I could start to recognize them all.” Hays stepped down as OC’s coach in February 2016, finishing a 38-year career (which included five seasons at Northwestern Oklahoma State) with a 724-470 record. At the time he left OC, he ranked 20th among active men’s coaches in wins and tied for 42nd overall. He has won more games at an Oklahoma university than any other coach. “Coach Hays is one of the university’s icons, and he is one of those fellows who spent decades here and made this place better because he made individuals better,” President John deSteiguer said. “Coach Hays will never be forgotten here at OC.”

FINDLEY NAMED ON 2017 WBCA VICTORY CLUB LIST The Women’s Basketball Coaches Association recognized OC women’s basketball coach Stephanie Findley (82) as a Victory Club honoree. Findley recorded career win No. 600 on February 16 when the Lady Eagles rolled past Rogers State 70-45. Findley, who just completed her 32nd season as OC’s coach, became only the 65th women’s basketball Stephanie Findley coach in college hoops history to record 600 career wins. Already Oklahoma’s career leader in coaching wins, she ranks 35th nationally among active coaches. Her 600th win came in Findley’s 1,000th game coaching at her alma mater. “That’s a lot of games – a lot of wins and a lot of losses,” Findley said. “But when you get to stick around this long, they tend to add up a little bit. I’m grateful to have the opportunity and I’m excited. It’s kind of neat that 600 fell on 1,000.” Findley was inducted into OC’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2004.

HEATH RECORDS WIN NO. 700 OC softball coach Tom Heath (71) notched another landmark win in March, earning victory No. 700 in a 5-3 extra-inning battle with Texas A&M International University.

Heath, who started OC’s program in 1995, is one of just five Oklahoma college softball coaches to win 700 games. He led the Lady Eagles to the 2002 and 2003 NAIA national tournaments. In 2014 and 2015, OC won back-to-back NCCAA regional championships and advanced to the national title game both years. He was inducted into the OC Athletic Hall of Fame in 2016.

LYNN SUCCEEDS JANZ AS OC ATHLETIC DIRECTOR The university named OC Athletic Hall of Fame coach David Lynn (95) as its new athletic director in November. “Coach David Lynn is recognized as an effective leader, a successful coach, and a focused, trusted manager of people and programs,” President John deSteiguer said. “The future of OC athletics is very bright under David’s guidance.” David Lynn Lynn replaced Curtis Janz (86), who led OC’s transition from the NAIA into NCAA Division II. OC won six national titles during his tenure – three in men’s golf (NAIA 2009 and 2011, NCCAA 2012), two in men’s cross country (NAIA 2011, NCCAA 2012), and one in men’s tennis (NAIA 2012). Lynn became the Eagles’ head golf coach in 1999 and guided the men’s team until 2008, then resumed those duties in 2010. OC strung together a run of 16 straight top-four finishes in national tournament play (either the NAIA or NCCAA), a streak that began in 2000 and lasted through the 2014-15 campaign. Along with NAIA national titles in 2009 (under Kelsey Cline) and 2011, OC finished as the NAIA national runner-up in 2001, 2005, 2008, and 2012. In addition to winning the 2012 NCCAA championship, OC was the NCCAA runner-up in 2014. “I take great pride in helping young men and women develop their talents academically, socially, athletically, and spiritually. I want OC athletics to be as successful as possible on the field, in the classroom and in the community,” Lynn said.

OC ADDS SWIMMING; OLYMPIC CHAMP PICKED TO COACH Oklahoma Christian will add intercollegiate men’s and women’s swimming programs for the 2017-18 academic year, with five-time Olympic medalist Josh Davis serving as coach. OC is just the third Oklahoma university to offer intercollegiate swimming. Davis already has more than 30 student-athletes in the fold. “Competitive swimming is a great

Josh Davis

sport with great student-athletes,” President John deSteiguer said. “It is a fantastic fit for OC and our culture of discipline and excellence. Coach Davis is perfect to lead this new program. I am thrilled about what the future holds.” Davis was the U.S. flag bearer at the opening ceremony for the 1995 World University Games, then won three gold medals at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. In the 2000 Games in Sydney, he served as the U.S. swim team captain; his youngest teammate on the squad was a teenager named Michael Phelps. Davis earned two silver medals and broke the U.S. record in the 200-meter freestyle. Davis is a member of the University of Texas Hall of Honor and the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame.

OC LANDS 56 ON D2 ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT LIST Fifty-six OC student-athletes were honored on the NCAA Division II Athletics Directors Association Academic Achievement Award list in the fall. OC had more student-athletes on the list than any other Heartland Conference school, accounting for 30 percent of the league’s 184 honorees. OC also had more honorees on the list than any other Division II university in Oklahoma. Among OC’s teams, baseball had the most honorees, with 10. Percentage-wise, women’s cross country led the way, with 50 percent of its 10-person roster earning the award. At the conference level, OC placed 146 student-athletes on the Heartland’s Academic Honor Roll for the fall semester. This came on the heels of OC’s female student-athletes tallying the best grade-point average among Heartland Conference schools for the second time in three years. Three OC teams also won Heartland academic titles – softball (3.45), women’s cross country (3.65), and men’s cross country (3.52).

STANFORD, MOON RECEIVE MS. EAGLE, MR. EAGLE AWARDS Seniors John Moon and McKenzie Stanford earned the highest honors in OC athletics for the 2016-17 academic year. Stanford earned NCAA Division II and NCCAA honors in basketball and was a NCCAA All-American in track and field, making her one of just two OC females (along with Roz Hamilton) to be an All-American in two unrelated sports. Moon became OC’s first Division II basketball All-America selection in 2016. He finished atop both the Heartland Conference and OC career list for blocked shots with 237. He was second on the Heartland’s all-time rebounding list with 812 and third on the league’s career scoring list with 1,881 points. His career scoring total, highlighted by a single-game record 50 points, also ranked fifth in OC’s storied hoops history. Both Moon and Stanford earned Oklahoma’s Division II player of the year honors from OklahomaSports.net.

Three decades ago, in 1987, the Biblical Studies Center and the Thelma Gaylord Forum were well on their way to completion, set for dedication ceremonies that September. The Prince Engineering Center wasn’t far behind, on pace to open in 1988. 1 2 3 4

The shell of the Prince Engineering Center takes shape on the north side of campus. This photo shows the early stages of construction on PEC. Early construction photo of the Biblical Studies Center and Thelma Gaylord Forum. The Bible building, now known as the Williams-Branch Center for Biblical Studies, nears completion. 5 The two new “focal point” venues were finished and ready for use in 1987.
