College of Business Administration OC’s College of Business Administration provides challenging educational opportunities for students who desire careers in the global business community. Master of Business Administration

MBA CURRICULUM Preparatory Courses Students with bachelor’s degrees in disciplines other than business may need to complete leveling work (the Common Professional Component) before enrolling in the core courses of the MBA program. Credit for these prerequisite courses is accepted from any accredited college or university. The four leveling courses offered in the MBA program are taught in the same accelerated fashion as the core classes. All leveling courses are offered each semester. Those courses and their descriptions are:

BUSA 5013: Economic and Quantitative Analysis The course covers supply and demand, theory of the consumer, theory of the firm, market structures, free-market resource allocation, government regulations, and international trade. Applications of statistical concepts and information systems to business practices are explored.

BUSA 5023: Marketing and the Legal Environment Basic concepts and problems of marketing management in the US and foreign countries are examined. Emphasis is placed on application of principles and theory to the development strategy. Basic rules of laws affecting marketing decisions are examined.

BUSA 5033: Accounting and Financial Resources This is a study of principles, conventions and concepts underlying internal and external reporting of accounting information by business organizations. Theory and techniques of financial management for business firms are covered.

BUSA 5043: Organizational and Operations Management The course is a review of management theory and practice. Analysis of classical/ functional, human relations, management science, and production/operations models of management is conducted. Applications of statistical concepts and information systems to business practices are made.


Master of Business Administration

MBA CORE COURSES The Core Students with undergraduate degrees in business and no deficiencies in prescribed undergraduate courses may go directly into the core courses of the MBA. The core consists of nine prescribed courses in business and can be completed within one year. With approval, as many as six transfer hours may be applied toward the degree. The core courses are:

ACCT 5103:  Accounting Analysis and Control This managerial accounting course will provide the skills to assist in evaluating issues related to a company’s operating activities. The course will focus on how managers can effectively use accounting information to improve performance.

BUSA 5203:  Economic Issues This course covers fundamental micro and macroeconomic concepts. Emphasis is on understanding the major issues of US and world economics and the application of economic concepts to management problems.

BUSA 5213:  Legal and Regulatory Issues This course studies the legal environment within which a business must operate. Emphasis is on understanding legal issues and laws affecting business operations and decision making.

FINC 5103:  Financial Services This course covers both theoretical and mechanical considerations in the administration of the finance function of today’s service-oriented industries.

5 INFO 5303:  Information Technology and the Future This course focuses on the preferred tools and techniques for collecting and evaluating information in the organization. Emphasis is placed on e-business and the future.


6 MGMT 5603:  Ethics, Decision Making and Communication This course examines the basic ethical issues involved in the conduct of business including both classical and biblical perspectives. Critical thinking of organizations as a spiritual, social, moral and ethical activity is explored, as well as the decision process. The way these decisions are communicated to others is studied. 7 MGMT 5613:  Leaders, Managers and Entrepreneurs This course examines how managers and leaders affect behavioral social systems of work organizations. The entrepreneurial function is also studied. 8 MGMT 5653:  Strategic Management and Change This is the MBA Capstone course. The importance of integrating management functions and decision making will be emphasized. A case study approach is used. 9 MKTG 5703:  Marketing Management and Innovation This course focuses on integrating marketing management decisions with the mission of the entity as well as its specific financial objectives.


Master of Business Administration

MBA CONCENTRATIONS Be the Boss of what you study. After completing the preparatory courses (if required) for the core courses for OC’s MBA degree, you can choose to focus your studies in one of eight targeted academic tracks: accounting, finance, health services management, human resources, international business, leadership and organizational development, marketing, and project management. As an alternative to specializing in a certain track, you can choose any three courses from among the tracks and receive a general MBA degree. Track classes are offered during the summer semester and, like the leveling and core classes, are taught over a seven-week term. ACCT 5113: Advanced Tax Accounting This course is a review of relevant tax topics. The areas of the taxation of individuals, corporations, partnerships and S corporations; property transactions; and gifts and estates will be covered.

ACCT 5123: Advanced Auditing and Professional Ethics This course studies advanced concepts, theories and techniques applied to external financial, governmental and internal audit engagements.

ACCT 5133: Advanced Financial Accounting This course studies advanced concepts and techniques applied to consolidation theory and financial reporting practice. Emphasis is on real-world applications of how information supports managerial decision making.

ACCT 5143: Topics in Accounting This course studies a number of key topics in accounting that are covered in the uniform CPA examination. It examines government and notfor-profit accounting and reporting, information systems as they relate to the accounting function and the use of accounting information in strategic planning and operations management.

ACCT 5153: Accounting Theory This course studies the evolution of alternative theories of accounting, including recognition, valuation and measurement considerations. It includes the historical development of accounting and the standard setting process in financial accounting, and how that history has impacted current practice. Other topics include the regulation of financial reporting; the postulates, principles and concepts of financial accounting; and the conceptual strengths and weaknesses of current standards are explored, along with research techniques that advance the profession of accounting.

10 ACCT 5163: Accounting Research and Quantitative Techniques This course will examine professional research in accounting. It will cover effective writing skills, the accounting research environment, accounting research tools and international accounting research. Research tools and techniques will be applied to the financial reporting, tax, audit and forensic accounting topics.

MBA Admissions Applicants with a bachelor’s degree in business who have a 2.5 or better cumulative undergraduate GPA and have met minimum GMAT or GRE scores are granted admission to the program. If the applicant has less than a 2.5 GPA, but his or her last 60 hours of classes reflect a 2.75 GPA or better, and the applicant scores at least the minimum GMAT or GRE score, then he or she may be granted admission. The GMAT or GRE exam requirement may be waived if the applicant has a 3.0 or better accumulative GPA with five years’ business professional experience, or has a 3.25 or better GPA without experience. The exam may also be waived if the student has completed nine hours of B or better graduate course work. Applicants with a bachelor’s degree in disciplines other than business may need to complete leveling work (the Common Professional Component) and may be granted provisional admission. Transcripts from these applicants are reviewed to determine which of the four leveling classes are needed. If the applicant has successfully completed fundamental courses in accounting, marketing, economics, and management, the applicant may be granted admission and begin classes in the core courses.

MAcc Admissions Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree or be enrolled in the last semester of college prior to graduating. To qualify for admission, the applicant will have already completed 30 hours of accounting or be currently enrolled in courses that will complete the 30-hour requirement. Applicants with only 24 hours of Accounting may take ACCT 5003-Issues in Advanced Accounting Concepts as a leveling course and maybe granted provisional admission. Applicants are required to have completed at least three hours in Finance, Macroeconomics, and Microeconomics. The applicant must have a cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or better. The minimum scores for the GMAT or GRE are 450 and 285. The entrance exam requirement can be waived if the applicant’s cumulative GPA is 3.25, or if the cumulative GPA is 3.0 and the applicant has five years of work experience, or if the applicant has completed nine graduate hours with B or better grades.

International Applicants International student applicants must submit additional documentation for admission. Students for whom English is a second language must submit an official Test of English as a Foreign Language with a minimum score of 550 (paper-based), 213 (computer-based), or 79 (web-based). A financial information form must be completed. Official documentation of adequate funding for one full year of academic study, including living expenses for the applicant and any dependent, must be provided. All foreign transcripts must be accompanied by an official English translation and an official foreign credential evaluation. For students currently in the United States, proof of legal status is required along with any additional documentation concerning the ability to engage in study. All international students must sign a statement of understanding form. Transfer students must provide proof of eligibility to transfer.
