OKANAGAN WOMAN

Winner of Okanagan Woman Makeover Contest Iris Fink, is a wife, mother, sister and friend. She is also a breast cancer survivor.

SPRING MAKEOVER WINNER!

Born in Germany, Iris moved to Canada with her family at an early age, growing up in northern Quebec, Whitehorse and finally Toronto as her father, a geologist, moved to various mining jobs. She attended Sir Oliver Mowat Collegiate Institute in Scarborough, Ontario where she met her high school sweetheart husband Jeff Fink. Both went to the University of Western Ontario, Iris to study Business and Jeff, Kinesiology. Now living in Kelowna, collaboration at home and at work now fills their lives. Iris provides administrative support at Okanagan Pedorthics and Sports Bracing, OKAPED, where her husband Jeff is a pedorthist.

What you notice first about Iris is the sparkle in her hazel eyes, her athletic physique and engaging smile. However, the year 2017 sent Iris on a devilish roller coaster ride. So, in January when she received the news from Okanagan Woman that she was the Winner of the Spring Makeover contest… .

SHE WAS MORE THAN READY!

ONE DAY at a time BY PATTI SHALES LEFKOS

"There’s nowhere to go but up!” “This past year I have discovered and undergone treatment for breast cancer,” wrote Iris in her contest entry, “First a lumpectomy, then chemotherapy, then a double mastectomy and finally radiation.” Undecided about breast reconstruction, Iris’ goal for the coming year is to get healthy and fit, lose weight around the middle and get strong again. “I want to learn to live in my body before making any decisions. I turned 50 in December and my radiation finished on January 2.”

8 OKANAGAN WOMAN SPRING | 2018

So, what has the past year been like for this active woman? She would usually spend her summer freetime hiking, running and entering events like the 16K Stand Up Paddle Kalamalka Crossing, while her winters were spent cross-country skate skiing or downhill skiing at SilverStar. “In January 2017 I found a lump in my breast. That same day a mammogram reminder card arrived in the mail. Life became a whirlwind. I had a screening mammogram, then an immediate follow-up at the hospital for a mammogram, ultrasound and biopsy.” Two weeks later in her surgeon’s office Iris decided, based on the information she had, to have a lumpectomy and radiation. Eight weeks later she learned her cancer was HER2positive, an aggressive form of breast cancer.

Then she discovered another lump. Chemotherapy followed. “My brother told me to gain a sense of control by shaving my head before losing my hair. I put my long blond hair in two ponytails. My daughter Michaela, 18, who is studying in the Faculty of Forestry at the University of Toronto, cut one. My other daughter Katrina, 15, who attends Kelowna Secondary School, cut the other. Amazing daughters, they were never embarrassed to be seen walking with me when I was bald.

I wanted to show them how to stand strong against adversity.”

Pampering Iris with an Okanagan Woman Spring Makeover is part of the healing. The schedule included a visit to Boutique Esthetics Lounge, located at 590 K.L.O Road for facial waxing by Valinda Curtis. “I seem to have more facial hair after chemotherapy.” says Iris smiling. Our day continued at NV Studio, at 1771 Cooper Road, where hairstylist Jessica Langedyk trimmed, shaped and styled Iris’ hair. “My hair is growing back and is quite grey.. and I like it! I purchased an expensive wig but never wore it. When I put it on I felt like an imposter.

A WIG MAY WORK FOR OTHERS, NOT FOR ME. EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT.” Then on to FACES Body and Soul in Orchard Park Shopping Center, where esthetician and makeup artist Jasmyne Wishlow treated Iris’ face to various natural mineral powder products developed by Jane Iredale. After cleansing and moisturizing, Jasmyne gently applied a primer and foundation base, followed by false single strip lashes, a neutral eye shadow and dark brown espresso eyeliner. The finishing touches: rose lip liner and a lip plumper with cinnamon, all set with a balancing hydration spray.

In early October, after recovering from chemotherapy, Iris made the decision to undergo a double mastectomy and more radiation. “Maybe it’s vanity, but I wanted my body to be symmetrical. I knew I could investigate reconstruction surgery later. I am hesitating now because of the risks of surgery and infection. Right now, I am all about healing.” “Jeff bought me snowshoes for Christmas.” They’ve already enjoyed two downhill outings, and two cross-country skate sessions at SilverStar. “He is so positive. He has been my rock. When I was diagnosed, he assured me we would get through this, we were in it together.”

Further down the highway, we stopped at Fashion Foundations, 1950 Harvey Avenue, where, before her mastectomy, Iris had purchased a zip front camisole fitted with Velcro side pockets for postsurgery drains. On this visit, Susan Wort, the owner, fitted our deserving winner for prosthetics and a mastectomy bra. Fashion Foundations have an extensive range of breast forms and a very knowledgeable team always ready to help. Prosthetics can cost up to $400 per breast, but we learned from Susan that all women in Iris’ situation are entitled to some, if not all financial support through available benefits from Pharmacare. Susan has kindly offered to work with Iris through the process, should she choose the prosthetic option.

Next we took a short drive to Vernon to visit Casa Bella Fashion Boutique, located on 30th Avenue. Here we were warmly welcomed by owner Diana Vona.

Sports Bras Petite to Plus

Casa Bella is not a typical fashion boutique, this unique store also sells high end bedding and accessories…. such a lot to see, we found it hard to stay focused at times! With a myriad of high-end designer styles in this beautiful store, a frenzied clothing hunt began.

Everything looked so fabulous on Iris, we were unable to decide on just one outfit, so we took a few! All outfits were from the adorable Frank Lyman line.

More radiant than ever, Iris was ready for her photo shoot with Bonnie Donovan owner of Bonne Belle Portraits. Bonnie's expertise shone through as she put Iris at ease in front of the camera. Iris posed like a professional in her first outfit from Casa Bella. She rocked an off-white draped halter top with ruched neckband, paired with stretch skinny leg pants and red platform high heeled Dorking pumps by Fluchos from Strut, perfectly accessorized with a silver pendant from Casa Bella Boutique.

NOW FEELING VERY CONFIDENT UNDER BONNIES DIRECTION, Back in Kelowna, it was our pleasure to spend time at the very stylish Kelowna shoe store,

Strut Footwear and Apparel in the Mission Park Shopping Centre. Strut is a high end designer shoe store, owned and operated by Shandi Schwartz.

Iris, with the expertise of sales associates, Lynora and Brenda, had way too much fun trying on many different styles of pumps, slingbacks and sandals, finally selecting a couple of pairs of elegant stylish shoes that coordinated perfectly with her outfits.

Iris takes this opportunity to try out the prosthetics from Fashion Foundations as she models a colourful stretch Frank Lyman dress, highlighting Iris’ curvaceous silhouette. Shoe the Bear, black strappy high-heels from Strut completed this amazing outfit.

Throughout the day Iris raved about the incredible support from friends and family, her cancer support group. “They listen to me, cry with me, laugh with me and take action in thoughtful ways.”

“My best advice for someone going through cancer is to enlist an advocate. When you first receive the diagnosis, your mind and emotions, and those of your loved ones, are going a mile a minute. If you can find someone who is slightly at arm’s length from the situation and can think clearly and speak up for you, it is so helpful. Eventually, you learn to become your own advocate.”

“This is a blip in my life. It doesn’t define me. I am ready to move on. I want other women to know there is light at the end of the tunnel. Things will get better.” We felt privileged to spend the day with such an amazing and inspiring woman. Iris wowed us all with her twinkling eyes, engaging smile and her positive, “look at me now,” attitude.

A very big thank you to our sponsors for their time and generosity.

Missy Mackintosh, is a professionally trained make-up artist.

MAKE UP

She studied at Blanche McDonald, Vancouver and Make Up For Ever Academy, Paris.

with Missy

In 8 simple steps, Missy will take us through the method she used to achieve this elegant and natural look for our lovely model Diane.

EYES on Spring

STEP ONE

STEP THREE

Starting with an eyelid primer, apply it from the lash line all the way up to the brow line. This creates a fresh canvas base and helps to keep the eye shadow in place and avoid it from creasing.

For the contour area and to give your eyes depth, apply a darker shadow than in step 2, a medium taupe shade always works well.

Using a shadow, a shade lighter than your natural skin tone, pat lightly over the primer. This will set the primer and help with blending of the eye shadows in the next steps.

Using a rounded brush, apply the shadow into the contour of your eyelid - where the natural fold of the eye is - starting from the outside of the eye and working your way in.

TIP: BETTER TO USE MATTE SHADOW ON MATURE LIDS VERSUS SHINY SHADOWS AS SHINE WILL DRAW ATTENTION TO FINE LINES.

Blend the product up to where the brow bone starts and taper off toward the inner corner of the eye.

Take a finer brush with the same darker color shadow and apply it lightly to the lower lash line, using a press and pull down method. With this method you are applying the product and blending it at the same time.

TIP: AVOID USING AN EYE LINER ON THE BOTTOM AS IT CAN DRAW ATTENTION TO ANY DARK CIRCLES OR BAGS UNDER THE EYES.

STEP FIVE

Using the finer brush again, apply a very light pink highlight to the inner corner of the eye.

THIS EMPHASIZES THE BRIGHTNESS OF THE EYE.

14 OKANAGAN WOMAN SPRING | 2018

STEP SIX NOW FOR A POP OF COLOUR!

For our eye liner we’ve used the 2018 colour of the year, ultra violet. Apply the liner to the top lash line, getting as close to the lashes as possible. Lining the top lid opens up the eyes. Having fun with the liner, is an exciting way to wear a pop of colour.

You're a REAL Beauty

TIP: APPLY A VERY FINE LINE FOR DAYTIME AND TRY A THICKER LINE FOR EVENINGS - BE AS DARING AS YOU LIKE!

STEP SEVEN

The mascara. Applying mascara is an important step, we want our lashes to look as full as possible, but we don’t want to look like a spider just crawled onto our lids, so start by wiggling the brush into the base of the lashes and pulling through to the tips. Then apply nice long strokes, from base to tip, coating every lash. I like to lightly sweep the mascara wand over the lower lashes also, but there is no right or wrong here, your preference!

STEP EIGHT

We paired our elegant soft eye look with a subtle pink gloss for our model. Gloss creates the illusion of fuller lips and will give light reflection and brightness to the face.

TIP: IF YOU ARE HESITANT TO CHOOSE GLOSS FOR FEAR OF BLEEDING, THERE ARE MANY CLEAR LIP LINERS ON THE MARKET TO HELP KEEP YOUR LIP GLOSS IN PLACE.

PERFECT FOR MOTHER’S DAY, EASTER WITH THE FAMILY OR FOR THAT SPECIAL DATE WITH YOUR SPECIAL SOMEONE!

As we approach the end of the first quarter of 2018 with resolutions to ‘do better’ still occupying space in our minds, most people are likely to fall into one of two categories; a) You're congratulating yourself on sticking to that new year's resolution and finally achieving the weight loss and health results you've been after for the past few years, or b) You're feeling anxious, frustrated, overwhelmed and have been beating yourself up over falling off the wagon and failing at yet another diet. HARSH AS IT SOUNDS, “B” IS WHERE MOST PEOPLE HAVE SAT IN THE PAST, ARE SITTING TODAY AND UNFORTUNATELY THE REALITY IS MANY WILL SIT THERE AGAIN NEXT YEAR.

LET GO of the HYPE, Grab hold of HEALTH If you've beaten the odds and found yourself belonging to the first group, congratulations! Statistics say that only 20 percent of people are able to keep their resolutions in check beyond the end of February. This of course means that 80 percent have long since let it go. “B” group people, although you may feel like you’re the only ones who weren’t able to succeed, clearly this is not the case. But why? The concept behind making a resolution is resolving (making a decision, standing firm, being

committed) to achieve a specific goal, or at the very least, come closer to hitting the mark this year than last. I may be going out on a limb here, but I'm guessing no one sets a goal, invests time and money into achieving their results, announces their resolution to family and friends, while secretly never intending to follow through. Crazy right? People aren't the problem. Resolutions themselves aren't the problem. It's the hype that's created around weight loss and health, especially at the beginning of every year.

Hype is a marketing tool used to catch our attention and create an urgency to purchase. Hype highlights, focuses on and appeals to sensitive areas and emotions like guilt, shame, and feelings of helplessness and despair. After making the audience squirm, a crafty marketer then shares how anyone can lose a crazy amount of weight in a very short period of time.

Want a refreshed look, but not ready for surgery? Ask Dr. C. Bakala, your trusted Facial Cosmetic Surgeon, about all your surgical and non-surgical facial cosmetic concerns.

Clearly much of what is being offered is not working for people. At this rate it's not surprising obesity rates are at an all-time high. Using celebrities as influencers or over promising and under delivering on the amount of weight that can be lost or the time frame for results, are just two of many tactics used to get people to purchase a diet. And in that vulnerable place of not wanting to fail again like last year, people react to their emotions rather than respond to what their common sense is saying and the yo-yo dieting continues. Statistics further report that chronic dieters “buy and/or try” something new every 90 days. Being overweight or obese and often dealing with serious health concerns are emotional enough without all the mis-information and hype. Let's take a look at how to avoid the hype and what to grab onto for health.

If you've answered “yes” to these, chances are you are about to embark on a journey that ends up bringing you right back to where you started. Diets will do that. Now don't get me wrong, anyone can lose weight on a diet, the question is, can they keep it off ? Again, statistics tell us that less than one percent of people can actually maintain a diet for life. It's not people who are failing, diets are just not structured in a way that facilitates success. Programs on the other hand are entirely different. TANIA GUSTAFSON Nutritionist & Fitness Coach (IBNFC)

Fashion Forward Styling AT AN AFFORDABLE PRICE

TO CONFIRM WHETHER YOU'VE FOUND A WINNING PROGRAM ALWAYS ASK YOURSELF THESE THREE QUESTIONS: 1. “Is what I am about to do based on science?” 2. “Does it make sense?” 3. “Can I do this for life?” If you're able to answer “yes” to all three, congratulations! You have chosen well and have just increased your likelihood of success by 99 percent. There is just one more thing to understand when embarking on any sort of weight loss or health journey and that is the work. As with anything in our lives worth having, it was worth working for. A good program is simple, straightforward and easy to follow, yet change of any sort is never easy. Being committed to making healthy changes, one percent at a time if necessary, consistently over time will bring about huge results. Think about it. If you committed to doing something for your health one percent better every day, where would you be in a year?

A lot healthier with a lot less hype, that's for sure!

Tania, owner/founder of FIT Nutrition, is a global nutritionist and fitness coach, fitness instructor, workshop facilitator, educator, speaker, writer and success creator. Tania is currently one of only five health professionals licensed and certified in Canada to coach a proven, three-phase program providing education on the importance of blood sugar stabilization, not dieting. For more information go to fuelignitethrive.com.

ASK YOURSELF THESE FIVE QUESTIONS: 1. “Does the presentation or ad bring up feelings of guilt and/or shame?” 2. “Does it promise results above and beyond what you had expected? 3. “Does it promise results in a very short time period?” 4. “Does it require a specific product purchase in order to be successful?” 5. “Does the call to action feel like high-pressure sales”?

So, as diets are tantamount to hype, a good program will set you up to win. Programs motivate and inspire lifestyle changes to achieve results. They provide education on how to correctly eat the foods you love in a way that stabilizes blood sugar to lose weight healthily and maintain those results for life. Programs will be food based. Products and/or supplements should be recommended (not required) to achieve results. They are there to support the program by filling any gaps in nutrition and increase health.

healthy HIKING

THE OKANAGAN VALLEY BOASTS MANY HIKING TRAILS AND CLUBS TO GET YOU STARTED. FOR MOST OF US THE GREAT OUTDOORS IS JUST A FEW MINUTES AWAY.

Time to head for the hills PATTI SHALES LEFKOS

Hiking, the perfect mindbody workout, activates endorphins, the so-called happiness hormones, boosting spirits to make us feel and look better.

What are you waiting for? IT’S ALL IN YOUR HEAD…… AND YOUR HEART

Getting out for a walk in any environment is a good thing, but going for a hike in nature is even better. Walking or running indoors on a treadmill is great exercise for improving mental states but nature surpasses when it comes to fighting common mental health issues like stress. A hike has the added benefits of clearing your head and improving your general outlook on life. Time spent in green space – nature preserves, woodlands and even urban parks - can reduce stress levels. As far as health risks are concerned, word has it that “sitting is the new smoking.” Also, there is a growing consensus that stress contributes to high blood pressure and heart disease risk, so time spent hiking is likely to mitigate the effects of long and often sedentary workdays spent in front of a screen. That first step out the door could also make your work time more productive. Research has shown that those who spend time in nature, and less time with technology, are up to 50 per cent

more creative when it comes to problem solving tasks. To relieve the effects of mental fatigue brought on by too much technology, avert your gaze from the screen, unplug and step out the door. Remember to leave your headphones at home.

YOUR MUSCLES WILL THANK YOU

Let’s start with your glutes. If Jennifer Lopez’ booty is your ideal, hiking is for you. The glutes, a series of muscles which support the torso in all types of physical activities, support your bodyweight and backpack while hiking. Performing pre-season squats in the gym is a great way to prepare. Flexible and limber hip muscles help support the lower back and improve shock absorbing on those downhill steps. Strong abdominal muscles promote an upright posture while helping to support the load on the back. Your quadriceps, situated above the knee at the front of the leg, get a major workout while hiking both downhill and uphill. They help to propel you forward and

20 OKANAGAN WOMAN SPRING | 2018

assist your knee in straightening and bending. In combination with the quads, the hamstrings, situated in the rear of your upper thigh, pull the legs back. Closer to your boots, the calves, situated in the rear of the lower leg, are in constant motion on the uphill. All these muscles benefit from warm ups followed by gentle stretching before hiking. Engaging all of these muscles on a regular basis will improve your stamina, balance and stability, protect you from the risk of falls and reduce overuse injuries to knees and hips. More good news. Depending on your body weight you could burn up to 550 calories per hour of hiking. The number of calories in part depends on your body weight. The more you weigh, the more you burn. A 200lb person burns 550 calories per hour. Carrying a pack also contributes to calorie burn. A daypack counts for 50 to 100 calories per hour while an overnight pack will burn up to 200 more. Of course, the more challenging the terrain, the greater the number of calories burned.

SAFETY FIRST

The beauty of hiking is that you don’t have to be in great shape to get started. However, as with any new physical activity, before rambling up any steep hills check with your doctor, especially if you are over the age of 35, have high blood pressure or have been inactive for a while. Hike with a partner or join a hiking club, learn to use a map and compass and carry them at all times to back up your GPS. Bring along lots of water and remember to drink often to stay hydrated, even on those cold winter days, especially important in the dry Okanagan air.

NO TIME LIKE THE PRESENT

Hiking exists on a huge continuum from walking on a local woodsy trail or hill busting in the Okanagan, to routes in the Canadian Rockies. The possibilities are endless. Soon more ambitious adventures like Europe’s famous Tour de Mont Blanc or El Camino de Santiago or even treks in the Himalayas may seem possible. They all start with that first step out the door. Hiking, usually thought of as a three-season activity, can be extended in winter by adding snowshoes to your equipment list. Join a hiking club to find partners. Most hikes are suitable for all ages, so get the kids involved and join as a family.

HOW MUCH TIME DO I NEED?

GRAB SOME GREAT GEAR

Reliable, comfortable equipment can make any outdoor experience even better. Most important, purchase sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support. Don’t forget to break them in with shorter walks so you’re not surprised by blisters on longer outings. A comfortable daypack with outside pockets to carry your favourite water bottles is a must. Take full water bottles and extra clothing to the store, in order to check out the feel of the pack when full before deciding on your purchase. Height adjustable hiking poles, the lighter the better, round out the equipment list. Look for ones that fold into three sections. They’re easy to store in your daypack or larger duffle if you want to travel afar for multi day hikes.

Experts say two and a half hours per week of moderate activity will result in most of the health benefits in the Top Ten list. Reducing the risks of breast cancer or colon cancer requires 60 more minutes per week. If more vigorous activities like hiking uphill with a heavy pack are more your style, you can get away with 75 minutes per week and still gain the health benefits. And, guess what? You don’t have to do it all at once. A quick lunchtime hike up a hill near your office counts, as long as it lasts at least 10 minutes. Source: www.goodhiker.com

FACTS about

LIFE INSURANCE

BY MEGHAN MACDONALD

According to a poll conducted by TD Insurance and Environics Research Group, which surveyed 1,500 Canadian adults, 3 in 10, or almost one-third of Canadians don’t have any life insurance. That means that they may be leaving their loved ones in a financial lurch once they’re gone. 1

HERE ARE

5 COMMON MYTHS AND FACTS ABOUT LIFE INSURANCE

1. MYTH: My employer’s life insurance program is adequate FACT: Generally, employers may provide employees with life insurance

that could be equal to one or two times their annual salary; sometimes you have an option to purchase up to six or seven times your salary. But, in today’s work environment, commissions, bonuses and second jobs often mean that your actual salary is a small part of your big income picture. An employer’s life insurance or group insurance is a good start, but it probably shouldn’t paint the whole picture. There may be limitations on how much and what type of coverage you can keep if you leave your job. You may need additional individual insurance. Individual insurance is a contract between the client and the insurance company and not tied to an employer. It is portable if your employment changes and includes contractually guaranteed coverage, definitions and premiums. Experts suggest that you probably need somewhere between five to twelve times your salary to replace your income for dependents. And even if you can convert your employer policy to an individual policy down the road, it might be more expensive than purchasing that individual policy today, particularly if you are young and healthy. With these factors at play, you can view employer-offered insurance as a bonus.

2. MYTH: I’m not the main breadwinner, so I don’t need life insurance FACT: People assume that if the person who brings home the proverbial

bacon has insurance, then the household can function financially when that might mean hired help needs to be brought in to replace that person’s contribution to the household. Ensuring a breadwinner’s income is replaced through the use of life insurance is important but many members of the family make a contribution to the family enterprise. Even a stay-at-home spouse provides important services that would need to be replaced at his or her death, like child-care, in order for the income earning spouse to remain in the workplace. Having an insurance policy on the lower income spouse will also give the main breadwinner a chance to take time off with children, and help the family deal with their loss, should they lose that loved one.

3. MYTH: Life insurance is too expensive FACT: According to industry research by LIMRA (Life

At TD Wealth Private Investment Advice, we take a holistic approach to wealth management.

Insurance and Market Research Association, now LIMRA International), almost 80% of consumers overestimate the cost of life insurance. But, life insurance can actually be very affordable. For example, if you are a healthy 35-year-old woman who doesn’t smoke, you could have $250,000 in potential life insurance coverage for 10 years for about $13 per month. The most expensive form of life insurance can be not having any insurance at all. A 30-year-old making $100,000 per year can expect to earn an indexed $6.3 million to age 65. The cost for a policy that would protect the family for the next 20 years would be a tiny fraction of the income that would be lost without insurance.

About Meghan MacDonald, CIM® Meghan is Investment Advisor with the MacDonald Wealth Group, who serves, retirees, business owners, professionals and their families throughout the Okanagan.

4. MYTH: I’m too young to worry about life insurance FACT: Life insurance actually makes the most sense when

you’re young since premiums will be much less expensive and you will have fewer assets to take care of your family when you’re gone. When you are older, and potentially have medical conditions, it may be difficult to buy insurance and if you can, it will likely be expensive. Generally speaking you should start thinking about insurance when there is an obligation to provide for someone else after your death. For example, an obligation to provide/care for a spouse, a young family, elderly parents or an obligation to fund a mortgage on the home so that the debt doesn’t outlive the person.

5. MYTH: Term life insurance is all I need FACT: Term policies usually provide coverage to age 75 or

80, but premiums increase after a certain period of time — most commonly ten years — so when the policy renews and you’re ten years older, it is more expensive than the first time around. A permanent policy is designed to pay off whenever death occurs, and you always pay the same premium despite your age and medical history. The ideal situation might be a mix of temporary and permanent insurance. There are many options for life insurance. To find out if life insurance is right for you, and how to address your unique needs, talk to your advisor. Life insurance allows us to keep together what we’ve put together. For a family, the loss of a spouse or parent can have a devastating financial impact on the remaining members. Life insurance can replace the income lost due to the death of a breadwinner and allow the family to maintain the standard of living they are accustomed to. One reason that many don’t have life insurance is because death is hard to talk about and come to terms with. No one wants to think about their death and its consequences for loved ones. Canadians believe that life insurance is important but they put off the buying decision and so it’s not usually top of people’s priorities but it should be.

For recipes and more, check us out at shannonlinden.ca. Meanwhile, here’s a look at two outstanding novels, worthy of enjoyment any time of the year.

With magnificently rich characters, this book has been described as one about truth and honor. A National Book Award finalist, I highly recommend this read. ”

NEWS OF THE WORLD BY PAULETTE JILES

The year is 1870 and the Old West is as wild and unwelcoming as the Devil with horns on. This is especially true for a ten-year old girl raised by the Kiowa who killed her family and the 71-year old war veteran and widower charged with transporting her across Texas. It’s a state in turmoil thanks to a corrupt Union-appointed government, mandated to rule former Confederates. Danger lurks down the barrel of every gun toting, trigger-happy, citizen, but Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd (Kep-dun to his charge) is undeterred. Accepting gold for payment, he takes on the weightier moral responsibility of ensuring Johanna Leonberger’s safety. The two must cover 400 unrelenting miles in a patched-up wagon, pulled by a faithful horse, traveling from Wichita Falls to San Antonio. Through inclement weather and over unforgiving landscape, threatened by human predators, hungry as wolves, the Kep-dun must deliver Johanna to the only family she has left: an aunt and uncle she cannot remember. Journeying through tiny towns, the Kep-dun makes a living reading from newspapers, giving the eager ears who’ve paid a dime to hear him,

updates of what’s happening outside their small and dusty corners of the world. His talent is delivering hard news softened with fascinating, scientific discoveries and strange and entertaining stories originating from exotic places his audience will never see. Along the way, he teaches Johanna English, desperately trying to reintroduce her to a life of civility, including lady-like manners and cumbersome dresses, all of which the corn-haired captive fiercely rebukes. Industrious, stoic, and brave beyond belief, thanks to her Kiowa upbringing, Johanna becomes quite indispensable

to the Kep-dun, Likewise he, father of two grown daughters, earns the trust of the innocent child, sold for some dinnerware and a stack of Hudson’s Bay blankets (the author is an Americanborn Canadian). While I’m rather reluctant when it comes to Westerns, this is a historical fiction-styled story with a different feel. For one thing, Jiles is a poet and it shows in her lovely writing, laced with humor as dry as the Texas landscape she so beautifully describes. You can’t help but gun for the pair. With magnificently rich characters, this book has been described as one about truth and honor. A National Book Award finalist, I highly recommend this read.

4.5/5 Cheers!

WONDER BY R.J. PALACIO August Pullman (Auggie for short) is just an ordinary kid—except for his extraordinary face. Born with a facial deformity, he’s been homeschooled, but when he’s ten-years old, his mom decides Auggie needs more than she can provide. That’s why Auggie is enrolled in the fifth grade at Beecher Prep private school. While his father thinks it’s like sending the lamb to slaughter, Auggie is bravely on board, and thus begins a charming, funny, frank, and poignant story you won’t soon forget. Told mostly from Auggie’s perspective, the short chapters shift in narrative and include perspectives from characters like a kind-hearted classmate named Summer, and Auggie’s new best friend, Jack Will. Despite initial reluctance, Jack comes to genuinely enjoy Auggie’s company because Auggie is funny and smart and shares so many of the same interests. Jack forgets all about Auggie’s face—until a bully named Julian convinces Jack he can’t be part of the popular group if he hangs with Auggie.

Jack learns the hard way what loyalty looks like as the pair’s endearing friendship evolves. Via is Auggie’s older sister and his fiercest protector, but she secretly struggles with resentment toward her brother. Since Auggie’s birth, his doting parents have been consumed with attending to his many needs, trusting Via to take care of herself. She does so splendidly, but her parents miss a lot. When Via’s best friend betrays her, she feels totally alone, until she meets a special young man, joins the theater, and steps out onto her own center stage. One of the strengths of this beautifully told book is the realistic struggles, not only of August, but those who love him, live with him, parent him, and become his friend. For Auggie, fully aware of how uncomfortable his face makes people, the ignorance and sometimes the cruelty he endures, is heartbreaking. Halloween is his favorite time of year, as he says: "I wish every day could be Halloween. We could all wear masks all the time. Then we could walk around and get to know each other before we got to see what we looked like under the masks."

And herein lies the greatest message of the book. It’s about empathy and understanding, what makes people who they really are— deep down—how courage, honor, and loyalty define us; how love and kindness truly make the world go-round in the most beautiful way. I saw the movie before I read the book and it is equally outstanding. Highly recommended for kids—and adults— of all ages.

4/5 Cheers!

THE WOMEN PARTNERS Pushor Mitchell (PM) is the largest B.C. law firm outside of the lower mainland and has established itself as the premier “go-to firm” for business and personal legal matters. We thought it would be interesting to get some inside perspective from leaders in the Okanagan legal community that would help with when and where to seek legal advice. Theresa Arsenault Q.C.

Vanessa DeDominicis

Q. As a senior partner, you have seen a lot

Q. As one of the newest partners, what

of growth and change. What has changed the most? What is core to the firm’s culture?

A. When I joined the firm in 1985 I was one of only two female lawyers out of nine. I became partner in 1986 and served on the management committee for the next 16 years, 4 as managing partner. Significant growth and change especially in the areas of technology and access to information has occurred. With the internet our clients are often much better informed about the law but really need our advice about the best way to proceed. That is where our experience is invaluable. Helping our clients arrange their affairs in a way that accomplishes their goals, while protecting them and giving them peace of mind is very rewarding. At PM our core values demand legal expertise and a client service work ethic in a team environment. Our firm has always encouraged involvement and leadership in the community and believe that we attract the best staff and lawyers because of it. We are very proud of the positive changes we have helped create. We are especially proud of the great group of talented female partners and associates we now have. A third of our partners and associates are female, and that will continue to grow as we do.

is it that drew you to the firm in the first place? What is your practice focus?

A. PM is a forward-thinking firm; it is constantly evolving to meet the needs of its clients, its staff and lawyers. The culture is about the team, and you really feel part of something great – whether it be helping clients meet their goals or working every day with lawyers and staff that care and strive for excellence. That is what the PM spirit is all about. I focus on Estate Planning, Estate Administration and Real Estate. My clients are diverse and range from young families to high net worth real estate investors. Protecting a life’s work and managing significant personal transactions takes care and understanding not only of current personal circumstance, but the underlying transaction drivers and anticipating future outcomes. Thanks to my clients who entrust me with significant aspects of their personal lives and investments, I have a vibrant practice and thoroughly enjoy what I do.

Susan Connaghan Melodie Lind Q. Tax law is a definite specialty area,

how did you get interested in it? What is the most important tax planning consideration for individuals?

A. I first became interested in tax law as a summer student with the firm, and during my articling year I decided to pursue it as my practice area. It’s not an area that I had considered when I decided to go to law school, but I found that I really enjoyed the challenge of tax law (it is like an ever-changing puzzle to solve) combined with the satisfaction of being able to put it into practice to help people. The single most important tax planning consideration for an individual is a good estate plan. Some or all of income tax, probate fees, property transfer tax and GST can apply upon death and/or to an estate. A well thought out plan avoids costly tax traps, ensures that the deceased’s wishes are carried out and minimizes administrative burdens during a difficult time.

Q. Transactions are stressful, what

are the key challenges and what do you do to help your clients prepare for negotiations?

A. Practicing business law is interesting because there are very few “standard” business ownership, risk or economic circumstances. As well, individual entrepreneur goals are diverse. The primary challenge regardless of enterprise size is understanding the business’ core principles and the issues inherent in the situation. Only then can you begin crafting advice that will meet that particular business’ and entrepreneur’s goals. Helping clients with negotiations is one of the best parts of what I do. At the table or behind the scenes, organizing and presenting ideas and concepts and working through them to get a deal done is extremely gratifying. Good communication is an important component of helping reduce your client’s stress levels during negotiations, as is keeping your client’s focus on the desired outcome and not being distracted by less important issues that can crop up.

OF PUSHOR MITCHELL LLP The women partners at Pushor Mitchell are an integral part of the firm’s growth and success. Joni Metherell

Andrea East (Senior Associate)

Q. Your practice is focused primarily

Q. You work regularly with helping homeowners buy and sell leases of Westbank First Nation (WFN) lands. What is unique to homeownership on WFN lands?

on litigation related to wills, estates and trusts. What are the most common issues on which your clients seek your advice?

A. Estate litigation has grown with the use of joint ownership as a planning tool. Legal challenges arise when spouses or parents put assets in joint names to try and avoid probate fees or otherwise transfer assets outside of the estate. Other areas of litigation involve rectifying invalid Wills where beneficiaries try to establish unsigned or unwitnessed Wills as a valid testamentary document; and, there are also variation claims to a Wills terms where spouses or children (including independent adult children) feel they have not been adequately provided for in a Will. Estate litigation has been referred to as “family law with an empty chair at the table.” The proliferation of blended families and second marriages has made estate law more complicated. It is often a highly emotional time for clients who are dealing with grief, loss, financial stress, and very complicated family dynamics and history. I work with my clients to help minimize the stress they are experiencing. The most rewarding part of what I do is when someone says, “I feel so much better for having spoken to you today.” Taryn Moore Q. Family law is much more than dealing with divorces. Can you give us some insight into the complexity of various stages of relationships that you deal with?

A. Family law lawyers are uniquely positioned to assist parties to address important issues which arise at different stages in spousal or parental relationships. These agreements are commonly referred to as Family Law Agreements (FLA’s) and there are a number of different types: Cohabitation; Pre-Nuptial; Marriage (defining spousal rights and obligations); and Separation agreements. Additionally, if parties are not in a spousal relationship but have a child or children together, there are also Guardianship and Parenting Agreements. FLA’s provide clarity to each party’s expectations and define respective rights and obligations between them. While potentially complex agreements, they must be fair and reasonable in light of the particular circumstances of the parties and established legal principles. If someone is contemplating cohabitation and is also the owner of real estate, other assets (sizeable or not), a business or is expecting to receive a gift or inheritance, that person would benefit from an FLA and would be well served to meet with counsel rather than in the absence of an agreement, be subject to the default provisions of the law.

A. There are several significant differences. Your property will be held under a long term pre-paid lease or sublease (usually 99 years) and not a certificate of title. For a home in a full residential development, an Owners Association (acts like a strata corporation) holds a head lease, and the individual homeowners hold a sublease and pay fees to the owners association to cover common costs (similar to strata fees). Buyers also need to understand that the start of the term begins when the lease was first entered into by the first person who bought the lease, and not from the closing of their transaction. Every resident also has an opportunity to vote or stand for election to the Advisory Council which represents nonmember resident’s interests to the WFN Chief and Council. Homeowners on reserve do pay property tax to WFN.

Important events and milestones in life deserve careful thought and planning, yet we quite often fall back on a relatively hands-off approach. As you can see from the many issues and perspectives covered, having the experts at Pushor Mitchell as advisors and advocates in your corner can make a significant difference to protecting and preserving your life’s achievements. The women partners at Pushor Mitchell are making a difference to their clients in what can be a chaotic and complex world.

Our Spring COVERGIRL Her own story

Amberlee Erdmann’s passion is contagious, and it is easy to understand how she is able to inspire youth to become leaders who hopefully will, in turn, give back to our Okanagan communities.

Perhaps Amberlee Erdmann’s desire to help others began with her days as a Brownie. It has grown into an undeniable urge to make a difference. In her teens, she went with other volunteers to Mexico where they assisted orphanages and built ten houses. For academic excellence at university, she was invited to join the “Global Key International Honor Society”. She was Miss Alberta in 2007 and Miss Global Canada in 2008. Formal training as a social worker was a natural choice. Her degree practicum was spent at the Penticton Okanagan College Women’s Resource Center. Now, six years later, she is on the Center Board and works for SOVAS, South Okanagan Victim Assistance Society, as Resource Development Coordinator. SOVAS supports men, women and children who have experienced sexual abuse or domestic violence. She also helps organize events like Take Back the Night. Along with a SOVAS co-worker, Amberlee developed an educational component for Grade 4/5 students. She addresses issues like online safety, sexting, child pornography and advises children how to recognize and effectively report sexual abuse. “The children ask me some really good, thoughtful questions and they really want the information.”

Amberlee also works as Project Coordinator for YES, Youth Engagement Strategy a program of the Community Foundation of the South Okanagan/Similkameen. YES empowers youth to become role models and leaders. Initially funded three years ago thanks to a legacy, YES is there to meet the needs of local youth, particularly young people in need of basic support. Amberlee is an advocate, finding resources and, working side by side with young people, she helps build their self esteem. “Youth are the backbone of the YES Project. Together with other service providers we are a strong team.” YES recently acquired its own premises and, on January 5th, excitedly received the keys to a very large facility. Fundraising is ongoing as the total need to complete this building project is $3 million.

When your career is in social services, it is easy for work to become your passion and to spill over into your free time. Amberlee’s obligations to SOVAS and YES extend well beyond her work day: her commitment also stretches to volunteering for other organizations. She was named one of Penticton’s ‘Top 40 under 40’, Kelowna’s ‘Top 20 to Watch’ and a ‘Local Hero’ by Global TV in 2015. At university, she wasn’t so sure that one person could have an impact. “Now, with my life experience, I believe that the smallest thing that a person does for others can make a difference. I want to contribute to a sense of community – to give back.” Amberlee is a lovely, graceful, natural beauty with a warm enthusiastic smile. A little pensively she shares: “I look healthy and I like to pretend my health is normal.” She suffers from psoriatic arthritis, a chronic inflammatory auto immune condition, which brings daily challenges so that doing some things takes a little extra time. Her motivation to move forward positively comes from helping people. “It makes me feel good and realizing their needs pushes me to be a better person and make that difference.”

For over two years, we have been hearing of the devastation surrounding the ever-expanding opioid crisis in the Okanagan and British Columbia. The good news is that there is now a strong focus on these issues, but the bad news is that the numbers are simply not declining. Much of the problem related to the fentanyl and overdose epidemic is the stubborn stigma attached to these issues. Many people feel that the drug user is creating his or her own problem.

It is far more complex than that. BY DEANNA RAINEY

STIGMA feeds

OVERDOSE EPIDEMIC As experts have pointed out, nobody sets out to be an addict. Many young people who experiment with drugs – which has been occurring for decades – or youths who are just looking for a way out of the pain of their alcohol or abuse-fueled home lives, have turned to drugs to escape. In fact, current statistics point to a strong increase in overdose deaths in middle-class Canadian men, as compared to the stereotypical unemployed, homeless drug user. This is due in part to the fact that fentanyl is now found in cocaine, and the people using cocaine consider themselves recreational drug users.

Does it really matter who is dying?

The fact remains that this epidemic is far-reaching and doesn’t pick favorites. People of all ages, social standing and gender are ending their lives as fentanyl attacks them. It was never just a big-city problem, although Vancouver’s East End certainly put a face to the initial deaths. Kelowna has been in the midst of the fentanyl/ opioid crisis since the beginning, and in fact has the highest number of cases per 100,000 residents, at 37.9 cases.

32 OKANAGAN WOMAN SPRING | 2018

Groups such as Moms Stop The Harm, a tireless group of mothers who have lost children to drug overdoses, are sharing their stories and introducing their deceased sons and daughters as the complete person they were. They all had dreams and they all struggled mightily with the heroin or cocaine or fentanyl that ultimately killed them. They were all somebody’s child, sister or brother, spouse, Mom or Dad.

We need to talk. We need to talk about the value

of each individual life and the love of the families left behind. Nobody deserves what this epidemic is doing, and there are some great organizations working hard to do their share in the battle against untimely drug-related deaths. Heroes have begun to surface in this battle and without fail, they are the people who simply refuse to attach value to the stigma of drug users. Big White Ski Resort in Kelowna employs over 1,000 young people each season. This year training and education on drug abuse and treatment has been included in orientation programming according to Michael Ballingall, Senior Vice President.

Society needs to revise the language in ways that frame addiction as a treatable chronic brain disorder

rather than a moral failure.

As Ballingall points out, there are a lot of international employees at the mountain as well as young guests from around the globe. “A lot of the internationals don’t realize how bad this is,” he says. “We have naloxone kits with ski patrol, first responders and at the Doctor’s office. All department heads are trained to administer naloxone.” He says their approach is simple. “We pull no punches and tell no lies. We don’t judge, we educate.” Much of the stigma is a result of the language used when discussing drug users. Society needs to revise the language in ways that frame addiction as a treatable chronic brain disorder rather than a moral failure. “Addiction” or “junkies” imply personal failings or fault for their disease. This stigma becomes a barrier to acknowledging that help is needed, accessing it and staying in recovery. Another emerging hero in the battle against drug overdose is St. John Ambulance (SJA). Drew Binette is the Strategic Initiative Lead with the organization. With a background as a health care strategist, he has, he says, ‘the best job in the world!’ St. John Ambulance trains people in first aid and sells first aid kits. These initiatives create funds for SJA to offer services in the community.

St. John Ambulance volunteers work at festivals, concerts and events across the province. Their advanced training and commitment to saving lives is working on the front line. From big cities to small gatherings, SJA has trained volunteers to deliver naloxone to the public. In Vancouver, fentanyl has been detected in 83 per cent of overdose deaths. And now, one in eight Okanagan residents knows someone who is battling opioid dependency. The Coroners Service of BC reports that as of October 2017, BC overdose deaths were up 26 per cent over 2016. Another interesting stat reflects that over 87 per cent of overdose deaths occurred inside, including nearly 58 per cent in private residences. These people are not the stereotypical, homeless people who are dying. There are no ‘typical’ victims of overdose deaths. They are your neighbour, your co-worker or, most devastatingly, a member of your family. Today’s focus on overdose deaths provides an opportunity to shine a light on the facts surrounding the nightmare of opioids. Peel back the layers and you’ll discover that these victims were once innocent children and young people with dreams and aspirations of their own.

Teaching Excellence, Inspiring Futures, Shaping Character

“In 2016 we began training volunteers to deliver naloxone and on November 25 we saved a life! We have saved another 59 lives so far,” said Binette.

We knew we needed to develop hands-on training on naloxone to help public sector workers. We created a program, piloted it with different organizations and now it is our goal to incorporate it into standardized first aid.”

Kids programs They need the freedom to be kids to run, play and laugh with friends.

vital in building confidence and social skills

For more information on Y programs, including Spring and Summer camps, or to make a donation to help a local child reach their potential, visit ymcaokanagan.ca. As parents we equip our children as best we can for success but most struggle at some point during childhood. Today, in spite of technological advancements, children are feeling less connected than ever before. Children need places to go where they can unplug and surround themselves with fun and excitement while engaging in active play. They need the freedom to be kids — to run, play and laugh with friends. They also need positive role models and friendships to help shape them into their best selves. For James, school alone was not giving him the sense of community and belonging he needed to thrive. “I didn’t like going to school. I was being bullied every day,” shares James. When James was in Grade 2 his mother Erin was worried about him.

“James was really struggling,” said Erin. “He had trouble making friends, and as a parent, I felt helpless.” Something changed for James, however, when he started going to a day camp at the YMCA. “James had a spark,” Erin says. “He had a light in his eye that I hadn't seen in a very, very long time.” She accredits the change in her son to his camp experience where he developed friendships and learned valuable social, problem solving and athletic skills. “He wants to be involved in anything and everything he absolutely can because he feels like he has confidence,” Erin happily shares three years after James’ first day camp experience. “I firmly think that it’s the YMCA camp that has made him who he is today.”

34 OKANAGAN WOMAN SPRING | 2018

“It is common to place a higher value on academic abilities and to forget the importance of building social skills,” explains YMCA child and youth manager, Tina Bennett. “It is important to remember that ‘soft skills’ such as fair play, sharing, effective communication and teamwork are just as important in setting children up for success.” These confidence building skills are encouraged and nurtured through all YMCA programs. The charity is dedicated to building a community of strong kids, from their early years up until they’re young adults. Following healthy child development and asset building philosophies, the YMCA of Okanagan offers children a place to connect and feel they belong while supporting their holistic development.

Kids’ programs included with child membership foster selfesteem (Girls Unite and Boys in Action), strength (swim lessons and Let’s Dance) and creativity (Active Arts and Y Not Build It!). Aside from facility access and programs, YMCA child members also receive discounts on spring break, summer and pro-day camps as well as Karate and numerous other programs. As a charity, the Y believes all children deserve the opportunity to participate. Because of generous donors, the Y is able to offer financial assistance for all programs, including camps and child care, to families who cannot afford it on their own. No matter a child’s financial, academic or social situation, MANY children, like James, depend on experiences through kids’ programs, camps, child care and before and after school programs to develop the independence, social skills, and confidence they need to thrive.

Mushroom Leek Asparagus

QUICHE

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Preheat the oven to 450°. Roll out pastry shell to about 11" in diameter. Gently place the pastry into a 9" pie pan and press into the pan pushing on the sides so they don't slip while baking. Fold any overhanging pastry under and press the edges into a decorative pattern with your thumb and fore finger or by using the tines on a fork. Prick the bottom of the shell several times with a fork. Place parchment paper over the pastry and fill with pie weights or one pound dried beans. Bake for 8-9 minutes until pastry is set. Remove from oven and set aside. 2. Turn the oven down to 350°. 3. Fill a medium bowl with cool water and ice. Set aside. 4. Bring a shallow pot of water to a boil. Trim the asparagus spears, getting rid of the tough bottom of the stem and reserving the top portion in 2-3 inch pieces. With the middle portion of the stem, slice them into 1/4" rounds. When the water comes to a boil, transfer the asparagus for two minutes to blanche it. 5. Use a slotted spoon or spider to transfer the asparagus to the ice bath to stop the cooking. Set aside. 6. Add two tsps of butter to a pan with a sprinkle of kosher salt, saute the mushrooms for 3-5 minutes over medium high heat or until tender and lightly brown. Transfer mushrooms to a small bowl. 7. Add the remaining two tsps butter to the same skillet and saute the leeks over medium heat until they soften and become translucent, about 5 minutes. Cover for a minute or so to assist in softening the vegetable (this has a steaming affect). When the leeks are softened, remove the pan from the heat and add the mushrooms back to the skillet. 8. Drain the asparagus and pat dry with paper towels. Reserve the tips. Add the asparagus rounds and gruyere cheese to the mushroom mixture. Stir to combine. 9. In a medium bowl, whisk the eggs until frothy. Add the half and half, milk, salt, pepper and nutmeg. Whisk to combine. Add the vegetable mixture to the eggs and stir until well combined. Pour the filling into the pie shell.

DIRECTIONS 1. Prepare fish: Fit a wire rack in the bottom of a large roasting pan, add about 1 inch of water. Place pan over two burners on stove and bring to a boil over medium-high heat. 2. Meanwhile, rinse fish well inside and out, scraping off any loose scales, and pat dry. 3. Tuck the cilantro, half of the lemongrass, and a third of the ginger inside the cavity. Scatter the remaining lemongrass and ginger along with the lime zest, garlic, and half of the scallion over the top of the fish and around the platter. Squeeze half of 1 lime over the fish and drizzle with fish sauce. (Reserve remaining scallion for garnish.) 4. Steam fish: Set the platter on the rack in the pan and cover the pan tightly with parchment-lined foil. Steam over medium-high heat until the fish is cooked throughout, about 10 minutes per inch of thickness (25 minutes for a 2 1/2-inch-thick fish). Test by inserting a sharp knife into the flesh near the backbone; the flesh should be opaque and offer little resistance.

Bee-Friendly

Local

Raw Honey

Save the Bees

POLLINATION & BEE FRIENDLY GARDENING AS HONEYBEE POPULATIONS HAVE RECENTLY BEEN IN DECLINE WORLDWIDE, THEIR IMPORTANCE IN OUR AGRICULTURAL SYSTEMS IS BECOMING MORE FULLY UNDERSTOOD.

The honeybees’ most vital contribution to the world, and to us, is pollination. More than half of all fruits, vegetables and nuts rely completely on honeybees - or in other words, one in three mouthfuls of food we consume wouldn’t exist at all if it wasn’t for bees! Therefore, the recent threats to honeybee health have sparked renewed funding for their research and protection, along with an increased desire to know how we, the public, can help save the bees. Honeybees actually pollinate as a result of their search for food visiting flowers in search of sticky, sweet nectar and nutritious pollen to feed themselves and their hive, the honeybees will unintentionally transfer the male seed (pollen) of one flower onto the next. A honeybee can travel up to 5kms in one direction in search of food - and when she finds a good source she will communicate this with the other bees in her hive through the amazing bee dance. While searching for nectar, which will be deposited into the hive and turned into honey, the honeybee becomes covered in the fine powder of pollen. As she moves from flower to flower, the pollen falls off her body into other flowers and the miracle of pollination occurs.

38 OKANAGAN WOMAN SPRING | 2018

This gathering field duty is the final phase in the life of the honeybee, who will eventually wear the wings off her body from over-exertion - her entire lifetime of 6-7 weeks culminating in the production of just one single teaspoon of honey. In recent years the declining numbers of honeybees worldwide has meant more people are looking to do their part in helping ‘save the bees’. There are several things experts agree on, which can be done at the household level to help support healthy wild bee populations in your neighborhood. Firstly, limiting your household use of chemicals and pesticides is a great place to start, and will ensure that your garden is not adding any harmful substances to your surrounding ecosystems. Secondly, purchasing organic fruits and veggies, where possible, ensures that your food was produced without the use of harmful sprays. Lastly, planting a Bee Friendly Garden, or simply adding a few beefriendly plants to your existing green space is a great way to support local pollinators and perhaps even enhance the aromas and colors of your backyard at the same time!

There are several things we can keep in mind when we do our spring gardening which will ensure pollinators have a healthy environment to visit. Bees need good sources of nectar and pollen, as well as access to fresh water. Providing a bird bath or saucer with fresh water for honeybees is a great idea - just make sure there is a lip or object they can safely land on and drink from without a risk of drowning. An old dinner plate with a thin layer of water and some larger stones in it works perfectly! Secondly, we want to select plants which are attractive to bees and perhaps those which bloom early or late in the season to provide food when there is less natural foliage available. Some good examples are Salvia, Lavender, Goldenrod, Sage, and Thyme - or in general plants with blue, purple, and yellow flowers in high abundance. The more flowers the merrier as far as the honeybee is concerned! It also doesn’t hurt to ask your nursery or garden shop if their seedlings are grown with or without

Neonicotinoids, a pesticide which has recently been proven harmful to bees in a Health Canada study. One last thing to consider when planting your bee friendly garden, would be getting your very own backyard beehive. Check with your local council to see if your zoning allows bees and then reach out to your local beekeeping club to get yourself started! For information about beekeeping, pollination, and bee-friendly gardening, visit Planet Bee Honey Farm in Vernon, BC where you can also pick up a packet of bee-friendly flowers or herbs right in store.

HEALTHY + HAPPY = WEALTHY + WISE

The innate desire and human inclination to commune with nature and other forms of life is known as biophilia. Biophilia includes natural light, plant material and vegetation, organic materials, natural views and other experiences of the natural world being assimilated into the enclosed man-made environment. Currently, statistics show that over half of the world's population now lives and works in urban areas; by 2050 it is estimated that number will increase to two-thirds.

BIOPHILIA

TOWER

POWER BY GISELA SCHOLZE

We are all hungry for healthy change on many levels in our personal lifestyle. A current trend can help us explore, learn and create while expanding on our own health, wellness and personal growth journey.

The 100 Mile healthy food movement that started right here in BC advocates eating locally grown food within a 100 mile radius of our own personal residence. It is astonishing to reveal our vegetable produce travels on average 1500 km from California's garden belt to reach our corner grocery store. We can take a giant green leap forward with a ZERO KM approach in our food chain; where we can take control and individually reap the benefits of growing our daily green veggies within the confines of our homes. Tower Power gardening is on the rise - in every sense of the word. This sustainable and fiscally smart concept brings a vertical farm into your home. A tower garden is an indoor growing system that promotes growing edible plants, veggies, herbs and flowers in an area of approximately three square feet. Perfect for a balcony in the summer, a tower garden sits on a caster platform and can be rolled indoors during the fall/ winter/spring season making the miniature upright garden operational all year long. The various grow-op systems such as Mr. Stacky, Foody Vertical Gardens, Flower Tower, HyrdoFarm and Tower Garden are readily found online as are eco-oriented options for the home-crafted inspirationista.

Ryan, Assistant Store Manager, says that while the Garden Centre operates year long, it’s usually the beginning of April before things are in full swing.

Ryan says there are over a hundred different plants on site including annuals, perennials, shrubs, trees, fruits, vegetables, hanging baskets and planters. “Our prices are very competitive, especially with the hanging baskets. We have a lot of buying power and it’s reflected in our pricing,” he said. Early March is the perfect time for planting seeds indoors, ready to transfer outside at a later date. “Seeds won’t grow until there’s warmth in the soil,” Justin explains. “Move the plants outdoors when there is no chance the temperature will drop below zero.” He also pointed out that hanging baskets should be placed outdoors in late April and May, once again dependent upon the weather.

Justin explained that there are several “zones” throughout BC, that help identify which plants grow best in local conditions. The Okanagan is a zone five and some of the best examples would be boxwood, junipers, grasses, heather and lavender. Ryan explains that almost everything Rona carries is pretty much full-sun with the exception of fuchsia, which doesn’t work well in direct sunlight. If you buy a plant in a ten inch pot in the spring, chances are it will reach the point where the roots need room to expand. At that stage, your best choice is to transplant it. Both Ryan and Justin mentioned the Kelowna Nectar Trail, created as an effort to help save the bees in the area. In 2017, 101 homes, churches, schools and businesses in Kelowna’s Mission area signed on to support wild pollinators by planting and maintaining a minimum one square meter garden of pollinator-friendly flowers. The program involves a 7.4 kilometer series of flowery stepping stones through the South Mission neighbourhood that helps pollinators move safely throughout the urban landscape. When you’re planning this year’s garden, be sure to drop by Rona on Springfield and check out the large selection of quality plants and shrubs.

COLOUR TRENDS + PRODUCT UPDATES

LOOKING FOR NEW COLOURS TO TRY?

Those following colour trends will know that the Benjamin Moore colour of the year for 2017 was a deep amethyst called Shadow 2117-30. As a colour, it was mysterious, evocative, enigmatic, and nostalgic. The 2018 colour of the year shows that we are moving energetically away from being allusive and towards confidence and vitality. Caliente AF-290 is a dynamic colour which shows strength, drama, passion, and desire. It is a perfect complement to the weathered wood and misty blue-green-greys that are so popular right now. It also gives deep blues and greys life and depth. It creates a playful background in which serenity co-exists with inspiration.

LOOKING FOR A NEW PRODUCT TO TRY?

Don’t be afraid to use colour to craft your space! The increasing popularity of jewel tones in general as accents shows a move away from quiet colour and toward more personalized, crafted, spaces. Everywhere we look, we see the rise of the artisanal, whether it’s beer, jewelry or jam. Our homes should be no exception and design is becoming more a reflection of individual identity rather than the conservative taupes and “greiges” of yesterday.

Do you have any walls in your home or office which get continually marked due to abrasion and high traffic? Benjamin Moore has emerged with a new product called Scuff-X which dramatically reduces scuffing on walls and doors. What’s more, it can be tinted in any colour and comes in a matte, eggshell and even pearl finish. It’s water-based and also low-VOC so you don’t have to worry about breathing harmful toxins while it cures. We have tested this product ourselves and can confidently say that it works extremely well.

Everyone could use a little extra

From custom armoires to built-in bookshelves, if you can imagine it, we can build it.

space There are so many reasons these days why people are looking for the extra room. Empty nesters might find themselves downsizing and have a need to make the most of a smaller living area. Custom storage cabinets, wallbeds, or a built-in office are several solutions to maximize the space you have. All you have to do is look around the Kelowna area and see all the condos being built to realize that people are starting to live differently than generations before. City living is becoming a much more popular idea than in years past and that means many people, including first-time home buyers, will be looking at the condo market to get into their own home.

Prices are skyrocketing which means smaller spaces are becoming the only option for many people. Creating a multi-functional room is a great way to make the most of the space you have. By adding a wallbed or custom storage you really add to the value of your home and make it more appealing to potential buyers as well.

So, whether you are in your forever home or it’s just your first step along the way, why not make it the perfect place to call home Kelowna Wallbeds have a full manufacturing shop and finishing department and can build just about anything to maximize your storage.

DID YOU KNOW?

NORTH AMERICA’S MOST RECOMMENDED FLOORING STORES

MANY PEOPLE FIND SHOPPING FOR FLOORING STRESSFUL. They’re frustrated if sales people don’t acknowledge them and upset if they get stalked after leaving their contact information. Surprises and extra costs above and beyond quotes, also create a big disappointment.

HERE ARE 5 TIPS

TO HELP MAKE IT LESS STRESSFUL… 1.

INTERNET RESEARCH - If the company has a good website, lots of good reviews and a few bad, they may be worth checking out, no one is perfect!

2. ASK AROUND - friends may have had a recent experience locally, good or bad.

3. VISIT THE STORE - Is the store clean and orderly? Are you greeted in a reasonable amount of time? Was the sales person listening to you? Talking, telling and “selling”, are not the same as asking meaningful questions about what is important to you. Taking notes shows that someone cares.

4. PERSONALITY - If you like your Flooring Consultant, it makes everything less stressful. If you don’t like the sales person, it’s okay to leave the way you came in!

5. QUOTES - For peace of mind, a rough quote is a good idea. It should include the price of the product, installation fees for different types of flooring as well as removal & disposal of existing flooring and any other extras that are expected in the project like baseboards & trims. Here’s an indication of different floor & window coverings and installation for comparison in an average size room: Carpet $930 Laminate $1,165 Luxury Vinyl Plank $1,320 Engineered Stone $1,609

Hardwood $1,705 Ceramic Tile $2,596 Natural Stone $4,400 Window Blinds $225

LET IN THE LIGHT, NOT THE HEAT The Okanagan Valley has stunning views, intense summer heat and nearly 2000 hours of annual sunshine. The bad news about all this sunshine is that until now it meant closing our blinds and blocking the amazing view during the day to make our homes comfortable and keep air conditioning bills under control. Imagine being able to keep your blinds open all day without worrying about UV fading your furniture, the leaves on your plants burning and having to squint from the sharp glare. This is all possible with new advances in 3M window film. Until now window film was thought of as an addition to car windows, but 3M window film is now available for your home that is optically clear, allows in abundant light and can make your home much more livable and comfortable.

Call for a

THE RIGHT WINDOW FILM CAN MAKE A ROOM MUCH MORE ENJOYABLE, COMFORTABLE AND ECONOMICAL TO HEAT AND COOL, ALL WHILE MAINTAINING OUR INCREDIBLE DAYTIME AND NIGHTTIME VIEWS.

3M window film is an extremely effective way of preventing heat gain in the summer and heat loss in the winter, with a pay back in as little as 3 years, especially in a climate like the Okanagan with long heating and air conditioning seasons. New LOW E window films are almost as effective in the winter at stopping heat loss as adding another pane of glass. A single pane window can perform like a double pane window and a double pane almost as effective as a triple pane window. Another reason homeowners close their drapes and blinds on sunny days is to prevent UV rays from damaging furniture, art and flooring. A much more effective and passive solution is to apply a 3M window film that blocks out 99% of UV without having to obscure the view, or actively opening and closing blinds daily.

Most windows do little to prevent UV from penetrating, and because of this the Skin Cancer Foundation endorses the use of a UV reducing window film to prevent accumulated UV skin damage. Glare is another easily managed problem with a correctly chosen film. Reflections on computer screens, TV's and the harsh light reflecting off polished tile and hardwood floors can be reduced to make for more comfortable light levels and reduced eye strain.

BENEFITS OF 3M WINDOW FILM: • Reduces winter heat loss by up to 40% • Reduces heat gain in the summer by up to 77% • Prevents UV fade, 99% UV reduction • Reduces eye strain and glare by 80% • Provides privacy without obscuring view • Lowers utility bills with a payback in as little as 4 years • Residential lifetime warranty*

Transform your HOUSE into a

HOME Now that the days are getting longer and the temperatures are rising, consider blending your indoor and outdoor spaces. In doing this, you are able to be closer to nature without leaving your property. New homes are constructed by a coordinated team of designers: i.e. builders, architects, interior designers, landscape architects, etc., who work together, synchronized in every detail, inside and out, to transform your house into a home. When people think of their home, they generally think of the walls that enclose it, but it’s much more than that. Your home is your entire property, from your kitchen and living room to your backyard and patio.

BY BLURRING THE LINES OF WHAT IS INTERIOR AND WHAT IS EXTERIOR, YOU INCREASE YOUR SENSE OF HOME. Your sense of home comes from the experience of living there and the people in that space. The more time you spend living in a place, the more it feels like home. By bringing interior functions outside, you allow for your outdoor space to feel like an extension of the inside of your home. In order for the extension to flow, it must be seamless. The best way to achieve this is by using large sliding glass doors.

With a seamless transition, you can continue the interior color scheme outside, extend the interior floors, countertops and fabrics, weather resistant of course, as well as selecting the same appliances, fixtures and accessories outside. Being able to seamlessly merge your indoor and outdoor spaces has become widely popular and offers some huge benefits. By establishing easy flow between the two, means you can virtually double your entertaining space by simply opening a few doors. How convenient, to go from your kitchen to the grill without skipping a beat. The larger the opening between the two spaces, the better for indoor/outdoor design‌ the possibilities are endless!

Did you know that some bedding can be unhealthy for you?

Your

HEALTHY Bedroom

Spring

is coming! With Spring fast approaching, many of you are looking at refreshing your bed linens and updating your look in the bedroom. But, did you know that some bedding can be unhealthy for you? “We are very cognizant of the health aspect of different bedding and mattresses here at Sleepy’s…. for example, we discontinued memory foam in our mattresses due to its toxicity. We have done the same with our bedding program. We want our clients to be healthy so they can come back again and again!” says Carling McLeary, the owners daughter and store co-manager of Sleepy’s. SHEET SETS It seems that many of you are looking for super high thread count sheets….but did you know that although they are nice quality, they may not be that healthy for you? Carling explains “your bed linens need to breathe to acclimatize each sleeper and stop the heat trap. I learned many years ago that a good quality 300 to 600 thread count is optimum. Try blowing air through a true 1000 thread count sheet.” At Sleepy’s you’ll notice sheets made from Eco friendly Bamboo, Tencel, Organic Cotton, Supima Cotton and beautiful flannels made in Portugal. “We shop the world to find linens that do not have additives, toxic treatments, or residual chemicals with the focus on quality and longevity. Fit is also very important for us. We ensure our sheets fit you better with stronger elastic on our fitted sheets and more generous top sheets and pillow case sizing”.

MATTRESS PROTECTORS If you have just invested in a new mattress, the mattress protector is the most important bedding buy, as it will assist in keeping your warranty. The latest offerings are very healthy for you! “Did you know that if you are using a quilted mattress pad or no protection at all….the weight of your mattress can double within 10 years?” asks McLeary. “Skin, dust, dust mites and other things we won’t mention accumulate and build up within the mattress. Especially terrible if you have asthma or allergies! The new style mattress protectors are ultrathin, breathable, water, skin, dust and dust mite proof. If purchased with a mattress they offer a backup warranty. We offer a large selection of green to natural options in different price points”.

PILLOWS Ahh, the pillow! The bane of some sleepers’ existence. “Many of our customers tell us they have linen closets full of pillows that don’t work for them. You go to a department store and hey… there’s a two for one or there’s a sale on the pillow as seen on TV. They are in a bag and you don’t/can’t try them out.” What a shame! Carling counsels “there is a direct correlation between the mattress you sleep on and the pillow you use. Your dominant sleep position plays into the fit as well. You need to try a pillow out before you buy it…that is very important! As with any bedding, many pillows on the market can be toxic and not conducive to a good night’s sleep. At Sleepy’s, we offer only healthy pillows to our clients: green, natural, and organic offerings in different lofts, feels, and configurations. Our pillow selection is the largest in the Valley and we assist each person in a more personal fit that’s just the right comfort level for you. Sleepy’s are all about sleep…. and your personal pillow is a big part of that!” DUVETS Carling says: “the best duvet for your good health is a pure wool duvet. Clinically proven to lower your heart rate and blood pressure due to breathability and superior moisture wicking, plus the lanolin deters dust mites and bacteria.” She goes on to say that pure silk is a close second. Both are cooler in the Summer and warmer in the Winter. Down, feather and synthetics can trap heat and moisture and may not be so good if you have asthma or allergies. Carling also added “watch out for anything that uses EverFresh or other treatments as they are toxic, also make sure your duvet cover is natural and breathable, this will enhance how the duvet performs”.

Spring is a time of renewal. Open your windows, freshen up your bedroom, do your Spring cleaning, decrease the clutter and add some health to your bedroom. The bedroom should be your sanctuary….your get-away from it all …..and your health zone. 52 OKANAGAN WOMAN SPRING | 2018

Sleep Safe in a Toxic World!

my dad sells the best mattresses ;)

Are you tired of body impressions in your

MATTRESS? O

hhhh... the dreaded body impression!

Only Sleepy's have the cure!

So, you just invested in a new sleep set and already in a few months to a year you are noticing a large hump up the middle of the mattress with two deep sinkholes on either side of the top where your bodies lay. You call the salesperson that sold it to you and you are told that body impressions are normal, that the mattress is conforming to your body. You are told to rotate your mattress more often or if you have a king size, to make quarter turns and this should minimize the issue. Then you find out that these sags have to be visibly more than 1.5" to 2" deep before you can have anything done about it. You explain that you have to roll uphill to meet your partner and are told again that this is normal? "Well, I assure you that this issue is very common, but it is not normal!" says Geoff McLeary, Owner of Sleepy's – Bedroom Furniture & Sleep Shop in Kelowna. Going back 12 years ago and beyond, mattresses did not get body impressions. Most good mattresses performed very well for many years and stood the test of time. The mattress of today will last (if you're lucky) an average of 5 to 6 years and most get these dreaded body impressions in a very short period of

time. Mattress sets of the past lasted more than 10 to 12 years or longer. Back when the brand name mattress makers decided to brainwash the North American public into believing that half a mattress was better than a whole one, it wasn't so bad. Most of the factories upgraded the quality of the components in the top of the mattress to give the bed more integrity. Sadly, after a few short years, the larger mattress stores put pressure on the manufacturers to reduce their wholesale costs so they could amp up their profit margins even more. The only way this could be achieved is by using inferior components and/or sourcing lower priced fillers from China, even spring systems come from there now. Some of the largest mattress makers are using 1.2 lb. density foam in their high-end sleep sets. That's only one step above "camping foam" folks! Sleepy's owner, Geoff McLeary does not like this! He says, “At Sleepy's, we do not like our clients to have issues with their sleep. We want happy and well rested customers! Sleep is important and your new mattress should enhance your health, not take away from it." He has teamed up with the Restonic and Spring Air Mattress factories in Vancouver to resurrect the two sided flippable mattress. These two mattress makers build their beds with integrity, they use all North American components,

and they are not in any of the bigger mattress stores. Restonic has won the Women's Choice Award for the most recommended mattress brand for four years in a row. As well as the Consumer's Digest Best Buy Award for the eighth year in a row. So, for about 15% to 25% increase in the cost. . . you will receive over 100% additional lifespan on your new double sided flippable mattress. The mattress will perform better, will feel better over a much longer period of time, and will retain its shape for the long term. "We offer a range of two sided mattresses starting at $398 queen size. "Sleepy's also specialize in a lesser known superior material used in their mattresses, toppers, and pillows ... pure latex. Latex is the longest lasting material used in the mattress industry and is derived from the rubber tree. You never have to flip or rotate a quality latex mattress, because these comfortable sleep systems will perform for the long term. Our most popular latex bed offers a 15 year full non prorated warranty and an unheard of 1" body impression tolerance over that 15 year period of time. “Over the last few years we have added handmade mattresses as well…beds made the old way! My Daughter Carling and I feel that we have assembled a showroom full of mattresses to be proud of!” McLeary says "We have had clients come into our store that were

dealing with a big mattress store in town and have gone through as many as five mattresses in two years due to premature body impressions/ warranty issues and are looking for solutions. They found Sleepy's offered them a solution, a better built and refreshing alternative to the defective designs being offered from other stores. "Sleepy's are also striving to be your destination "green" sleep shop in the Okanagan. "We offer a nice range of green, natural, and organic mattresses and bedding for your better sleep and better health. "Sleepy's promise to offer you only the best materials in their mattresses. Nothing made in China! No smoke and mirrors. No toxic memory foam. No gimmicks! Just the straight goods from the owner himself. You will find Sleepy's - The Mattress Store - just behind Costco on Baron Road in Kelowna - or visit our virtual showroom at www.sleepys.ca to get a feel of who we are.
