PUBLISHER’S MESSAGE | SUZY VB

Welcome home to all our snowbirds! Traveling can create a new sense of self and give us a new outlook on life, whether it’s an African Safari, a luxurious River Cruise or a fabulous resort South of the Border, it’s always good to come home.

Spring is a time of restoration and revitalisation. There is no better way to renew than to decide to make a positive change in your life. Our contest winner, Lauren, decided a while ago to take back her health and though there were some bumps in the road, Okanagan Woman’s Extreme makeover helped her to finally get on the right path. Laurens transformation was achieved through dedication and a desire to better herself! When we think of spring we also think of the honey bee. Honey has a kind of magic to it with so many uses and so many flavours. Maybe it’s time to learn more about what honey really has to offer, take a look at page 32. Dance is universal, most of us were dancing before we were walking. There are very few cultures in the world that do not express themselves through dance. We dance for all kinds of reasons; to celebrate, to express feeling, to lift our spirits or those of others, to entertain, to exercise and most of all to have fun. The Okanagan has so much to offer for those who want to take up this wonderful and active pastime! We recently met a few Okanagan women dedicated and passionate about bringing the world of dance to everyone through the use workshops and studios. Enjoy reading more about them on pages 38 to 41. With the war on drugs waging, the opioid crisis is taking far too many casualties, but there are many people and organisations set on helping those facing addiction to leave that world behind. Here in the Okanagan the staff at The Bridge work tirelessly to support those who want to improve their lives. We have highlighted some of what they do and their plans going forward on page 46. Downsizing and Rightsizing are some of today’s words to describe the process of decluttering your life and your space. We have some inspiration on page 49 to get you started. There are many ways to welcome spring into your world, the choice is yours - you decide! To all of our readers, advertisers, sponsors and contributors,

I hope you enjoy a very Happy Easter, a lovely Mother’s Day and a fruitful Earth Day.

Don’t fence me in… BY MARION STOLZE

Our lovely front cover model, Melanie Morrissette, born in 1976 in Quebec, is not just a pretty face. SHE IS A BRAVE AND SUCCESSFUL INDEPENDENT WOMAN, COMING FROM FOUR GENERATIONS OF MALE SMELTER WORKERS, AND RAISED TO BE FEARLESS!

Melanie studied chemistry and was the first woman in the family to work at the smelter (in the lab). At home, she rode dirt bikes, drove snowmobiles and tractors, and learned to change tires. Eventually, she followed her boyfriend to Abbotsford. Speaking not a word of English “it was like moving to a foreign country” and the situation affected her ego; she felt like she was starting from scratch though a job at Canadian Tire helped. Melanie and her boyfriend then moved to Kelowna, where she joined a gym, loved it and in 2009 began training as a fitness and Zumba instructor. Heartbreak followed when her boyfriend left her to be with her best friend. Needing space, she decided to live her life – her way - and the first stop in 2013, was yoga training in Thailand. Returning to Kelowna, she established ABStract Fitness, which now thrives, enabling her travel. Travel she chooses to do alone! In the summer, she jumps on her motorbike and, with sleeping bag, she rides wherever the mood takes her. She’s since returned to Thailand, driven solo around Baha, visited Belize, Costa Rica, Panama, Bahamas, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and many places in the USA. She makes friends everywhere! Melanie loves to travel light and frugally, so she travels with one backpack, two changes of clothing (washes one set each night), a swimsuit and beach robe that doubles as a nightie. She separates her cash, keeping it on her person for safety and doesn’t go out at night unless with new friends. 8 OKANAGAN WOMAN SPRING | 2019

cheslingerie pea .co w.

Along the way, she sometimes teaches beach yoga, Zumba or Pilates. She uses public transport, occasionally renting a motorized scooter to get to the more out-of-the-way places; she researches for reasonably priced accommodation, often staying in hostels. When asked if she has ever been afraid when travelling alone, she recalls only three times; before cell phones in Bangkok trying to find the Metro at dusk; when a Bahamian bus driver followed her after he tried to shake her down for an extra fee; and snorkeling alone among reefs when she couldn’t see land. Her travels make her appreciate what we have here: the ability to brush our teeth with running water, clean air, medical treatment, and the relative equality of women. No regrets, she loves her tiny condo with bikes in the pantry and skis in the wardrobe. Successful entrepreneur, solo traveller, motorcyclist, star skier, rock climber, what else does she enjoy? Contrastingly, “Putting on my heels, jewellery, full make-up and glamming up for a night out!”. Melanie really dislikes hypocrites and meeting guys who lie about their age and marital status, so she has taken herself out of the market for now. She doesn’t see herself as single for ever and maybe the right man will come along one day that will fit into Melanie’s world and complement her lifestyle. Her next adventure is a trip to Portugal with her parents, but not backpacking this time! OKANAGAN WOMAN SPRING | 2019 9

I AWOKE WITH A START.

My sleep addled brain struggled to determine the unfamiliar surroundings.

“What was that noise?”

A low heavy “harrumph” was emanating from somewhere nearby. Clarity and memory flooded back. I was alone in my tent located in the Elephant Camp in Samburu National Park and that noise could only be one of the local pachyderms making their way to the river.

A F R I C A N 101

JOY MCGINNIS - LUXURY TRAVEL ADVISOR Direct: 250 317 3121 Office: 778 478 2928 joy@traveltime.ca www.traveltime.ca

I frantically started waving the flashlight we had been given by the staff to signal for assistance. Immediately there was a calm reassuring voice outside my door. “Miss Joy, its okay. He is only scratching against your tent for a moment. There is nothing to fear.”

MY INTRODUCTION TO SAFARI LIVING HAD BEGUN! We arrived into Nairobi in the late evening as is the norm for most international flights. Clearing customs was quick and efficient and the transfer to our overnight at the Sarova Stanley Hotel uneventful. The following morning after a filling breakfast and introduction to the tour guides, our group of 13 loaded into our two seven-passenger Safari Land Cruisers and began the first of many long drives.

LESSON ONE: Driving in Kenya is

arduous! Traffic is unrelenting and in many areas the roads are no more than goat tracks. Being in the right vehicle is imperative. We saw other safari operators utilizing minivans and small jeeps and I couldn’t imagine how restricting and uncomfortable their journey was. Game viewing requires that you can stand up for easy access to photo shoots and to allow equal opportunities for all occupants.

LESSON TWO: Accommodations in Kenya

range from large resort-style lodges to intimate luxury tented camps. The large resorts offer pools, spas, fitness centers as well as satellite TV and entertainment. The luxury tent camps are either fenced or un-fenced. The difference becomes the proximity of the local wildlife. Unfenced allows the animals unrestricted access through the camp and limits your ability to wander freely in the evenings without mandatory security assistance. WIFI and electricity in the small camps are provided via generators and only available during set hours. During our safari we stayed at three luxury tented camps. This is beyond “glamping”! These permanent fixtures are furnished with king-size canopy beds, clawfoot tubs, outdoor showers and amenities that rival the best hotels in Europe! The staff are professional, kind and hospitable. Local Masai are employed as security for each individual tent between 6pm and 6am. They are at your beck and call for assistance in getting to and from the main lodge area and in my case to “shooaway” elephants. By moving around to three different locations we were able to enjoy an everchanging variety of wildlife. The gameviewing days began after a sumptuous early breakfast. We would head off into the national parks to see what awaited us. The guides from various operators all work together via radio to create a network of viewing opportunities.

The result is that all the visitors have equal access to The Big Five.

In fairness, we probably did wait 15 minutes before advising the others about our leopard!

LESSON THREE: Being in the bush in Africa is very different from Canada. The animals in Africa are more likely to hunt you than run from you. My request to “go for a run” was met with incredulity. “No Madam, you cannot go for a run! The animals are everywhere whether you can see them or not!” There isn’t much exercise while on safari! These are but a few of the lessons I learned. The best way to create an African Adventure that is perfect for you, is to work with a supplier that can provide all the components that best suit your expectations and budget. Fly instead of Drive? Tent versus Lodge? High Season versus Shoulder Season? With the expert guidance of professionals, proficient in their knowledge of the destination, and support from the local operators you can’t go wrong.

Healthy & Happy Lauren’s New Lifestyle BY PATTI SHALES LEFKOS

“I am thankful. Ready to continue on this path. I feel excited for the future.” “So, about a year ago I started going to the gym and committing to a healthy lifestyle. I was feeling good, gaining muscle but I wasn’t losing weight. In late December 2017, I decided to go to a Naturopath. We had met a few times and then he prescribed some supplements. After I had taken them for a couple of days my entire body felt overheated.”

At 34 years old, Lauren Merrell is the happiest she has ever been in her life. But it hasn’t always been easy. A few years ago, she forced herself to gather her strength and courage in order to escape an unfortunate and potentially dangerous marriage. She rebuilt her life, met her fiancé and eventually moved back to British Columbia from Toronto to be closer to family. “I turned everything around but, in the process, I let myself go,”

says Lauren.

When Lauren checked back with him, he said her symptoms were not unusual. Two days later she experienced what doctors would later describe as a Grand Mal seizure. “It lasted for eight minutes. I was turning blue. My teeth were clenched. I’m so lucky my fiancé Adam was there to call 911.” Countless tests found nothing medically wrong. The doctors concluded Evening Primrose Oil in one of the supplements had shut down her nervous system. “I learned how important it is to research all prescriptions myself.”

With no recurrences Lauren continued to maintain an active lifestyle, working out and eating well, but remained frustrated with her lack of progress in her weight loss. In July, she saw the Facebook posting for the Okanagan Woman Extreme Makeover contest. “I’ve never entered a contest before, but I was inspired and sent in my letter right away. I was chosen as the winner in early September.” Her recent official designation as a Certified Property Manager has her on the road a lot so, maintaining a healthy diet and exercise program has been a challenge. So how did she reach her current sweet spot lifestyle?

12 OKANAGAN WOMAN SPRING | 2019

In mid-September Okanagan Woman introduced Lauren to Nutritionist and Fitness Coach Tania Gustafson of Kelowna’s FIT nutrition, Fuel, Ignite Thrive. “When I started with Tania, I weighed 209 pounds. I’m 5 feet, 6 inches tall. I didn’t have a specific goal for the 12-week program other than to lose weight at every weigh in. My ultimate goal weight is 165 pounds.” “As Lauren already had a fitness program of her own that was a good mix of strength, cardio and intervals, I worked with her mainly as a nutritionist,” says Tania. “We concentrated on a three-phase program of blood sugar stabilization, Detox, Ignite and Thrive.” Tania worked with Jeunesse Global products and their Zen Transformation pack, which was generously gifted to Lauren during the makeover. The pack contains all-natural protein shakes, detox supplements, non-thermogenic metabolism boosters and amino acids to compliment Tania’s program. Tania Gustafson Nutritionist & Fitness Coach (IBNFC) Tania, owner/founder of FIT Nutrition, is currently one of only five health professionals licensed and certified in Canada to coach a proven, three-phase program providing education on the importance of blood sugar stabilization, not dieting. For more information go to fuelignitethrive.com.

“We met weekly at first, then bi-weekly for weight, body fat and measurement checks and to tweak and adjust for the coming weeks. We looked at her lifestyle and work schedule and set weekly goals, planning and prepping ahead of time.” They discussed also how to succeed when travelling and on holidays. As Lauren began to notice her clothes fitting better, feeling more energetic and the weight loss, she was motivated to continue living the program. “I set personal wellness goals every week and for the month,” says Lauren. “I work out three to five times a week plus I walk to and from work five days a week; that’s an hour of walking every day. I love the program. It’s a great feeling to see the scale go down at every weigh-in. I follow Tania’s recommended plan PFC 3 of eating protein, fat and carbs at every meal and eating every three hours to keep my metabolism working.” “Lauren is a rock star,” says Tania. “Her results were consistent even over the Christmas holidays. To date Lauren has lost 17 pounds, eight inches and 3 per cent body fat.” Lauren says she never felt restricted to certain foods. “It’s a long term, healthy lifestyle I will continue. Anyone can do the program. I drink lots of water, no alcohol. I love veggies but when travelling for work, I occasionally supplement my diet with a protein shake or Quest protein bar.”

AFTER ALL THAT EFFORT LAUREN WAS MORE THAN READY FOR HER OKANAGAN WOMAN MAKEOVER BIG DAY.

Lauren’s skin noticeably glowed following her visit to The De Pieri Clinic, on Ellis in Kelowna, where she was treated by Stephenie Merten, skin care technician, to a Hydro Wand ® Facial paired with Neocutis ® and ZO ® Skin Health Products.

OKANAGAN WOMAN SPRING | 2019 13

Next, we were warmly welcomed to Kelowna’s Crimson Hair salon by vibrant, ginger-haired owner and senior stylist Tara Sebastianis. Tara took some time to consult with Lauren to make sure she left with the perfect hair for her lifestyle.

“I want something easy to care for, but a bit edgy. I’m super happy in my life so I’m glad to take a chance on my hair,” says Lauren, sipping a delicious bulletproof coffee supplied by neighbouring Half Blind Bean Coffee. HBB coffee house can be found at 106 - 3320 Richter Street. Kelowna, just across from Save-On Foods in the Mission. Her smile grows wider as her hair is being styled and she can see the new colour shining through. “We call it Merlot,” says Tara, as she creates some sassy curls, adding styling product to give body to Lauren’s fine hair. As Lauren finally inspects her new look in the salon mirror, she got really excited and said this was her dream haircut.

Next step we went in search of Lauren’s wardrobe at Blue Sky Clothing Company, downtown Kelowna, where we met the manager, Kim Rutherford. Kim helped us to select a number of beautiful outfits which were hung in the fitting room waiting for Lauren. After a succession of fittings of skirts, pants, tunics and kimono’s, in prints and coordinating solid colours, we finally selected a floral crushed velvet, fit and flare dress, which flattered and accentuated Laurens fabulous new figure and complimented her Merlot locks.

Big bonus! We discovered, thanks to Kim, the dress offers two outfits in one.

This versatile dress comes with its very own black bamboo underslip, which can also be worn alone. This gave us the opportunity to style Lauren in two completely different ways.... which was our pleasure do.

With the help of Cathy Schneider from Strut Footwear and Apparel in the Mission Park Shopping Centre, we found the perfect footwear. Narrowing this down was no easy task, as we were so spoiled for choice. We finally selected two pairs of beautiful shoes. The Atelier leather sling-back, peep-toe, high-heeled shoes paired incredibly well with the floral dress, and the black dress looked stunning with the more dressy, champagne sling-backs boasting a trendy shimmering metallic heel. A raw crystal pendant with matching earrings by Dana Henning was also found in Struts shoe store which we used to complete the floral ensemble. 14 OKANAGAN WOMAN SPRING | 2019

We then entered the magical world of Bonne Belle Portraits. Photographer Bonne Donovan welcomed us into her studio; a very relaxed atmosphere where Okanagan makeup artist Tammy Peterson sets out her kit. Tammy invites Lauren to a stool near the window for the natural afternoon light and gets to work. “The makeup I’m using is inspired by the mélange of colours in the floral design of the dress,” says Tammy dipping into a fully stocked case, and sipping her glass of locally sourced white wine.

“My eyes look so big and bright,” she says.

“I use lots of products from The Body Shop where no items are tested on animals.” When Lauren first looks in the mirror her wide smile shows off her enviously high cheekbones and a hint of dimples.

OKANAGAN WOMAN SPRING | 2019 15

Before we lose the daylight, Bonne’s artistic talents come into play.

She poses Lauren in ways that bring out her confidence & sparkle. Bonne has soft background music playing and has a natural way of putting everyone at ease. In between shots the Okanagan Woman team approaches Lauren with handfuls of bracelets, necklaces and earrings to find just the right accessories to accompany her beautiful new look. As the shoot progresses, both Lauren and Bonne share a sense of bonding with their quirky sense of humour and positive spirit.

IT’S EVIDENT BY LAUREN’S BROAD SMILE, THAT THIS WELL-TRAVELLED YOUNG BUSINESSWOMAN HAS MADE HER WAY TO A WONDERFUL PLACE IN HER LIFE and with her wedding fast approaching, this experience could not have come at a better time. In addition to all of the physical benefits of the Makeover, we had the pleasure of presenting Lauren with yet another generous gift.

Predator Ridge Resort offered a special dinner on the Range Patio and a one-night stay in the lodge for her and her fiancé, Adam to enjoy. Lauren has gained control of her health and is ready to start her new life with Adam on a positive note.

The small tattoo of a compass rose, on the inside of Lauren’s arm says it all. IT ALWAYS POINTS TO THE NORTH STAR TO GUIDE YOU HOME. Lauren Merrell has arrived!

Don’t you just love spring for the colors, the sunshine, and that feeling of rejuvenation! OUR SPRING COLLECTION HAS ARRIVED AT STRUT FOOTWEAR, AND WOW, IT’S STUNNING.

SPRING ‘19 TRENDS You’ll see several new lines in our store, such as Rollie, Ego Trip, Art and Fantasy Sandals, just to name a few. Ok, let’s get to it and see what’s trending this season:

HEEL DETAILS are important from cut-outs, to transparent heels, to graphics, to combining materials such as wood, fabrics and prints. Many of the shoes you will see this season are ‘business in the front, party in the back!’

THE ANIMAL PRINT is a strong look that can really bring a lot more attitude to your outfit. The great thing about animal print footwear is that it is remarkably neutral and goes with just about everything, creating an incredibly fun look.

COLOR BLOCKING AND FLORAL PRINTS are also trending this season. These are often statement pieces that call for a monochromatic outfit on top that will allow the shoes to make the statement.

TEXTURE plays a key role this season from perforations, to combining suede, fabric and leather, to pony hair, to wood, to velvet to laser cut leathers. Also, the treatments used to dye the leathers have created some very rich and unique looks.

COLORS are bold this season ranging from yellow, to magenta, royal blue to green, and of course, red is as strong as ever. Just picture a great pair of wide-leg linen pants with a magenta slingback or wedge and you will be right on trend.

SNEAKERS are all the rage, you will see them paired with everything from business suits to sundresses. The variation of the sneaker will be seen in the thickness and colour of the sole, toe shape, prints, and casual to dressy profiles. Detailing will be prevalent, but to contrast that, the plain white sneaker is one of the strongest looks of the season.

Stop by and check out our new collection at Strut Footwear, where fashion and comfort always go hand in hand.

Entrepreneur Takes Products Back to Earth with Kisameet™ Canadian Glacial Clay

L e t’s G e t B a c k t o E a r t h ! Back to Earth™ founder and CEO, Kiley Routley, is truly taking her products…..Back to Earth! Her latest collection of personal care products include the pristine Canadian Glacial Clay found on an island near the central coast of British Columbia, called Kisameet™. This clay has been used for generations by the Heiltsuk Peoples for a variety of ailments. “We are truly blessed to have the opportunity to include this clay in our products” states Kiley. She further elaborates, “Unlike tidal clays, Kisameet™ clay was formed after the last ice age (during the Pleistocene Era), when melting glacial ice mixed with volcanic ash. This dense clay then settled in a massive granite basin and has been protected and preserved for centuries by a dense layer of rainforest flora.” To this day, Kisameet Clay is ethically hand-harvested by the Heiltsuk peoples to avoid any environmental damage. KILEY ROUTLEY is a mother of 3 and a born entrepreneur, with an innate artistic flare, a love for the earth, and an internal drive that started 12 years ago to create a ‘green’ company now known as Back to Earth™.

One of the many Back to Earth™ products that include Kisameet™ clay is their brand NEW Bee Fresh Natural Deodorant. “Although natural deodorants don’t stop one from sweating, the Kisameet™ clay helps to absorb its own weight in moisture, therefore helping to stay dry under the arms,” explains Kiley. Kisameet™ clay is also included in Back to Earth’s facial and medicinal care products, bar soaps and bath salts. “The best way to choose a product is to stay informed. Read the labels on products and learn more about the ingredients used in the brands that you use” suggests Kiley. Back to Earth™ boasts over 50 earthfriendly products and their mandate is to take into consideration the delicate balance of our heath and the planet we all share. Back to Earth™ products can be found online, in many like minded businesses, and at the factory retail storefront in Coldstream, BC.

6326 Hwy 6, Coldstream BC 250-550-6789 www.getbacktoearth.com

All Back to Earth™ products can be refilled at their storefront location to reduce the amount of single-use packaging.

4 Reasons to Make the Switch to a Natural Deodorant 1.

Natural deodorants are effective, contrary to what you may have heard. Instead of aluminum and chemicals to kill bacteria, natural deodorants use a combination of plant-base ingredients like coconut oil and essential oils that kill bacteria. When you sweat you naturally detoxify the body.

2. Natural deodorants are aluminum free. Aluminum may keep you dry by causing ducts to swell so that the sweat cannot get out – ultimately trapping the sweat inside the skin. Caring for Aging Parents This is a difficult transition for the parent who realizes they are entering a new, less independent phase of their life and it’s difficult for the adult child to have an increased role as caregiver. Transitions, such as helping with more daily activities or moving to long term care, bring on many emotions and role changes for everyone. Financial issues will arise as well. When it comes to the financial issues, below are some things to keep in mind. LORI SAMUELS, BA, CIM®, FCSI® Wealth Manager

Lori Samuels, a wealth manager at Raymond James, spends quality time getting to know her clients well in order to help clarify what is important to them and plan for their future with that in mind. Lori truly understands the importance of building strong relationships with her clients and interacting with them like people, not portfolios. Lori, one of a few female wealth managers in the industry, takes a special interest in helping and empowering women going through major life events such as divorce or death of a spouse.

Essential issues to address should include whether your parents have the income they need to meet routine living expenses, what are the sources your parents are tapping for current income? If they are spending down their principal too quickly, the next issue becomes whether they can redeploy their assets to generate more income while minimizing risk. Make sure your parents also have key documents in order such as wills and POAs for example. Ideally, they should secure all financial

documents in a safe place and give copies to trusted relatives/friends. Also, recommend they keep a secure list of usernames and passwords for any online accounts for their estate executor. If your parents remain in good health, asking for power of attorney may never become necessary – but it can be invaluable if a time comes when you need to make financial choices without their input. The experience of caring for your aging parents will likely be challenging. But it may also serve as inspiration for you to revisit your own plans for the future. If you don’t have your own up-to-date comprehensive retirement and estate plan in place, there’s no better time to start than now. The following generation will thank you for it.

Wealth Life Balance Women Feel More Time-Poor Than Money-Poor

Wiman Wealth Group

Women are increasingly in charge of personal wealth, yet their financial goals and overall investment philosophy are often at odds with how the financial industry has traditionally helped investors manage their savings. In a recent survey, roughly half the women described themselves as more time poor than financially poor.* We recently had a family meeting and talked about the concept that time equals money. Our daughter, who is 13 and enjoys math, suggested that from a math equation perspective if time = money then money = time. Simply put, if you have some money you can afford to take a trip with your family be it to Hawaii or camping for the weekend. Money provides time (and means) for family enjoyment.

Of all the benefits of using a financial advisor, saving time is the most critical. 47% of women say they’d rather “pay someone else to manage my portfolio to save time.”* Most women see investing as a way to meet short and long-term goals. Delegation is part of the solution. Of the women surveyed, the number one indicator of strong performance was generating income.*

Hello. We’re people-first, process driven wealth managers and we believe listening to our clients is the key to finding the right solution for them.

Making sense of the numbers In our meetings, we talk about achieving a 5% to 8% income experience. If we use the lower end of expectation at 5%, here is what the monthly and annual cash income looks like:

The reason for this is that income presents stability. Income is a bit of a known commodity. Income can address everyday basic needs and can also be used as a tool for creating choices in life.

LET YOUR IMAGINATION GO WILD - IF YOU CAN DREAM IT - WE CAN MAKE IT HAPPEN! Robyn Danielsson, Director of Sales says, “While plenary sessions are often a popular start to the day, follow up breakout sessions and recreational activities can really foster team building.” Robyn, loves having a position that allows her to promote the Okanagan and all that it encompasses. “I like to focus on the big picture, and when working with our clients it’s important to understand the overarching objective for their event. Once I understand this, I enable my team to ensure that we collectively deliver an exceptional experience.” “Whether you arrive at our door by road transportation or land by helicopter, our team are here to cater to your every need. We’re approachable and open to any ideas that will make your corporate event unforgettable. It was entertaining when a Lamborghini car club group actually used their Lamborghinis as golf carts and another company raced helicopters for a bit of fun corporate bonding! A new trend in food service gaining popularity, is the strolling dinner concept. Instead of sitting down for dinner, mingle amongst a variety of themed-based food stations. Our new indoor-outdoor banquet space is perfect for this. Pig roasts and steak & lobster barbecues are always a big hit, along with the Okanagan experience of local food and wine pairings.” Robyn adds “One of our big advantages here at Predator Ridge is our unique ability for clients to use our resort as ‘base-camp’ during their stay in the Okanagan. We have plenty of meeting rooms, we can provide food and recreation services, along with an abundance of creativity to ensure we can meet and exceed our clients’ needs.” Robyn holds a Bachelor of Commerce in Entrepreneurial Management from Royal Roads in Victoria. “I’ve been at Predator for a year, following many years in corporate, I now have the privilege of leading a team of dynamic individuals with the opportunity to harness their creative energy to align with our clients wish lists… this is what defines our success here at Predator Ridge.” “My job is all about creating, building and sustaining relationships,” says corporate guru Janine Collard, Head of Event Sales and anchor for the team since 2003. “One of my strengths is to anticipate the clients needs. I thoroughly review the multitude of layers of any planned event, making sure we are aligned with our client’s wishes. Today’s clients are more sophisticated, their needs have increased and dietary restrictions are more particular. As liaison between resort staff and the meeting planners, I make sure every minute detail is addressed.”

Fifth generation from Enderby, Janine knows the Okanagan intimately. As event coordinator at the Vance Creek Hotel, SilverStar Mountain Resort, and later executive assistant to Judd Buchanan, chairperson of the Canadian Tourism Commission, she gained a wealth of experience and boundless enthusiasm for providing exceptional, detailed personal service. “I get great satisfaction by leading the team to expertly execute an event. We also have the pleasure to work with interesting people from all walks of life, like Prince Albert of Monaco, Wayne Gretzy and Tom Cochrane, to name a few.” Janine is a passionate ambassador for the Okanagan lifestyle. The reason is obvious as she describes Predator Ridge’s stunning new 6,000sq.ft. banquet space, 50 per cent of which is outdoors. NO OTHER VENUE CAN BOAST OF OFFERING SUCH MAJESTIC PANORAMA ALL YEAR ROUND

Another detail oriented, and newest member of the team, Dawn Sheldon, takes care of business development as it relates to all groups visiting the resort, bringing a background in high-end hospitality and five-star client service to the table. After studying Hotel and Restaurant Management at Camosun College in Victoria, Dawn worked in restaurant management overseas in England, and later, the Four Seasons Hotel in Whistler. Then back to Royal Roads in Victoria to complete a Bachelor of Commerce in Entrepreneurial Management. After several years as a marketing manager for a Calgary based company, she found British Columbia calling her home. “When thinking about our groups and their time here at Predator Ridge, I ask myself what we can do to make their event more of an unforgettable experience; how do we turn a meeting into next year’s corporate golf tournament? a wedding into annual family reunions? all whilst building long lasting relationships in the process. I amalgamate my marketing and hospitality skills to create a detailed picture of what they can expect. We must anticipate our clients’ needs and wishes, and surpass their expectations, giving them reason to want to come back time and time again. We are an amazing group of three women, always creative in our approach. Robyn brings out our individual strengths and facilitates us working in a collaborative and unique way, allowing us to consider every aspect of our clients’ stay, ensuring we exceed all their expectations,” says Dawn.

“The Buzz on Honey!” HONEY. You may think of it as the ingredient in your favourite baking

recipe, something drizzled over your morning cereal, or dissolved into your cup of chamomile tea. But there’s a lot more to honey than meets the eye – its uses extend into skin and haircare, the alleviation of local allergies, and even as a dressing for wounds and burns. To complicate things even more, not all honey is created equal – your choices can include honeys labelled as raw, unpasteurised, creamed, liquid or any combination of these.

LET’S TAKE A CLOSER LOOK AT THE FASCINATING TOPIC OF HONEY AND ALL THERE IS TO LOVE ABOUT IT! Equally coveted by bees and humans, honey is produced from the nectar of flowers and stored up by the hardworking honeybee as their food for the cold winter months. Excess amounts can be harvested for human consumption, with enough left behind so the bees won’t starve during the winter dormancy period.

You may be surprised to learn that every flower will result in the production of a unique honey, influencing the flavour, colour and consistency. The most popular floral source of Canadian Honey is the Clover Blossom, followed by Buckwheat and Blueberry.

Often large honey producers will purchase as much honey from as many sources as possible and blend it together in a final mixture containing many different floral origins. However, certain specialty honey farms choose to keep the floral blossom honeys separate to allow customers the chance to experience the full range in flavour.

www.PlanetBee.com

32 OKANAGAN WOMAN SPRING | 2019

Popular Canadian varieties may even be complimented with international favourites from places such as New Zealand and Australia. It can be quite a rewarding culinary experience to taste unique honey flavours and decide on your own favourite! When it comes to terminology – look for Raw and/or Unpasteurized Honey which denotes minimal heating and processing to ensure the enzymes and nutrients remain intact. The only time pasteurized honey is desirable is when it is being fed to children under the age of 2 or to pregnant women.

EVER WONDER WHAT THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LIQUID AND CREAMED HONEY IS? Although all honey will eventually crystallize (aka freeze) at room temperature, in the case of creamed honey this has already been done in a controlled environment to ensure a smooth, desirable consistency. Should your liquid honey begin to form coarse crystals, rest assured this is a normal process and a sign the honey is pure. To reverse the crystallization, simply place the jar of honey in a warm water bath and gently heat until crystals disappear.

DID YOU KNOW HONEY IS THE ONLY PERFECT FOOD WHICH HAS NO EXPIRY DATE SO LONG AS IT IS STORED WITH A SECURE LID? Now that’s something worth buzzing about! Now that we’ve explored some of the most important considerations in choosing your honey – let’s not forget to mention the benefits of local honey. It has been shown that trace amounts of pollen in local honey can help alleviate the symptoms of seasonal allergies. For maximum benefit, look for raw honey produced as close to your home as possible and begin intake well before allergy season arrives.

HELP!

SCAM ARTISTS BY MEGHAN MACDONALD

abound!

Barb is not someone you’d take for a scam victim.

At 69, she is still employed — holding a top position at a professional association. Unlike the stereotype of an elderly victim, she is well-educated and a pro with e-mail and social media.

But almost two years ago, she was defrauded of almost $4,000 by criminals who pretended, over the telephone, to be her own son in trouble. “The caller claimed to be my son,” she recalls. “He said he had been in an accident and had been arrested for impaired driving.” The caller didn’t sound like her son, but said that he had a broken nose — which is why he didn’t sound like himself. He asked her to wire just under $2,000 to cover the damage to the other person’s car. Believing her son was in dire straits, she immediately wired the money. Another call came in shortly after, this time from someone claiming to be her son’s lawyer. He said another $2,000 was needed for her son’s bail. She again wired the money. “They had it down to a fine art,” she says with a sigh. “They had answers for everything. Even when I offered to call my son’s wife, he pleaded with me not to tell her, because it would cause problems at home — and I bought that story.” Barb felt guilty about keeping the secret and called her daughter-in-law, only to find her son safe and sound at home. The only thing injured was Barb’s pride and her pocketbook. Sadly, this isn’t an isolated incident. Stories abound in the media about scam artists defrauding unsuspecting seniors of their retirement savings and valuable assets. In 2013, the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre reported that 42% of mass-marketing fraud complaints involve people over the age of 60. Technology has made it even easier to prey on unsuspecting victims. “Scammers go after seniors because they know that many older people have money saved up,” says Robert Siciliano, online security expert for U.S.-based firm, Intel Security, “and some seniors aren’t that well-versed with the latest online schemes.” Like Barb, many victims don’t know they have been defrauded until it’s too late. Greater awareness of these crimes is the best way to prevent them.

Here are five common financial scams and what you can do to avoid being a victim: 1. PHISHING

Identity thieves will often try to steal details of your bank account, driver’s license, Social Insurance Number and other personal information by tricking you into entering those details online. You may receive an email that appears to be from your bank, from Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), or another seemingly trustworthy source where you may be asked to provide your personal and banking information. With your personal information in tow, there are numerous things that criminals can do to hurt your bottom line. They may try to apply for a credit card or take out a loan or a mortgage in your name, or syphon money from your bank accounts. TIPS: Be careful when providing personal details online, have strong passwords, and never share them. Don’t conduct financial transactions on a website with only ‘http’ in its address. Secured sites generally have ‘https’ and a lock icon before it.

2. SKIMMING

Tech-savvy criminals are using the latest technology to steal your credit or bank card data. They may secretly attach a device to an ATM card slot or store payment terminal to syphon the information. They may then use your data to make telephone or online purchases or even make a counterfeit card. TIPS: When paying by card, never hand it over — swipe or insert yourself. Memorize your PIN and shield the keypad when you enter it. You should make copies of the front and back of cards and keep them in a safe place. This way, if they are lost or stolen you have the information on hand to quickly cancel them.

3. YOU’VE HIT THE JACKPOT!

If you receive an email or call claiming you’ve won millions of dollars from a lottery or contest, or offering hefty compensation for your help in recovering large sums of money, an expensive item or clearing a cheque, chances are these are scams. TIPS: Ignore unsolicited messages. Don’t believe in a promise of money or items for cooperation from someone you don’t know personally. And even if the request comes from a name you recognize, double check to make sure it’s actually from the person you know.

4. FAKE CHARITIES

Charity scams feed on people’s generosity. People are targeted by email or phone calls by fake, but familiar sounding, charities. They may tempt you by offering to provide charitable receipts for amounts greater than you’ve donated so that you can claim large tax credits.

In 2015, an elderly person in Calgary was scammed out of more than $8 million after being befriended by a fraudster who later convinced the victim to funnel large sums of money into fake charities and international accounts. Unfortunately, criminals do prey on the generosity of seniors who are in a position to be charitable. Don’t take the bait: you could lose your money and your tax credit claims will be declined by the CRA. TIPS: Always ask the solicitor for the registered charitable tax number, confirm their status with the CRA before donating and get some first-hand knowledge about the charities yourself.

5. PYRAMID SCHEMES

Telemarketing, online, or door-to-door sales scams will entice you to invest in a start-up with promises of high return on your investment. Often these schemes require you to buy or sell products to become part of a mathematically impossible chain-referral pyramid scheme. For seniors who worry about their financial future, a promise of oversized gains for a small investment and little or no effort may be tempting, but should immediately set alarm bells ringing. TIPS: Never be pressured into snap decisions. Do due-diligence on business investments and deals you are presented with before you hand over your money. A KELOWNA BOOK CLUB BY SHANNON LINDEN

Soon the sun will shine and the daffodils will dance and that fairest of seasons, sweet, sweet spring will be upon us. As winter takes her leave, here are a couple of very different books the Ladies on Literature read. We invite you to follow along, here in Okanagan Woman, and online at shannonlinden.ca for recipes and reviews.

THE DANGEROUS ANIMALS CLUB BY STEPHEN TOBOLOWSKY

While the author’s name may not ring a bell, you might recognize his face. Well known in Hollywood, Tobolowsky boasts an impressive list of character roles in both movies and television, everything from Groundhog Day to Glee. Turns out, the actor is also an excellent storyteller. The book is a series of vignettes. It opens with the title chapter, a delightful trip down Tobolowsky’s early childhood lane. With the inquisitive confidence inherent to a five-year old boy set free to explore his own backyard, Tobolowsky teams up with an older (and wiser) friend, to form a special club. Intent upon capturing as many dangerous animals as they can (and being in Texas, there are no shortage), the boys reluctantly allow another youngster, who produces a rattlesnake skull, to join their ranks. While the newcomer argues a blood pact is in order, seven-year old president, Billy, claims the activities of the club are dangerous enough. And so they prove to be, as the boys catch scorpions in jars and leeches on their legs. They trick tarantulas from their holes, outrun poisonous snakes, and evade the neighbor’s nasty German shepherd. One of the scorpions manages to live for days, “floating near the bottom of a jelly jar - in an environment of pure alcohol, much like I did in the 1980’s,” quips Tobolowsky.

The story brings back memories of hot summer days, leisurely spent riding bikes and digging in the dirt, meeting in secret clubhouses and rushing home in time to wash up for dinner. -Shannon

The author “fades in some forty years later,” connecting his own boyhood spent hunting insects, to his youngest son’s ability to talk-to-the-animals. Vacationing in France, Tobolowsky is a married father of two boys, when William proclaims he can communicate with bats. “Now that I know their language, I can make them our friends,” William states. Much to his father’s shock, it’s true. When William makes high-pitched squeaks, bats come flying.

“Parents know that occasionally children will utter a sentence in which every word can make you question the fabric of sanity. But I believe that it is in these moments when you get a peek at the secret world your children have had all along,” the author writes. At the heart of this book is a man who embraces adventure, yet who possesses the rare ability to see poetry in the everyday. The Alchemist plays tribute his magical mother while Miss Hard to Get poignantly portrays love at first sight. The Middle Chapters starts out as a hilarious recollection of moving to Hollywood, where Tobolowsky finds an apartment his mom thinks is clean primarily because it is painted white. As the story progresses, Tobolowsky notices the gay district, home to his favourite breakfast haunt, is changing. Regulars are disappearing and surviving men are showing up with holes in their faces. Recalling the early years of the AIDS epidemic, Tobolowsky meets a young man who wants to write his own memoire. He knows where his life story starts and ends, but he will have no middle chapters. True to form, Tobolowsky combines humor with poetic insight in this story— and many more. Sometimes the author meanders off course, but he always brings the story back around.

Overall, a delightful read.

THE HANDMAID’S TALE BY MARGARET ATWOOD

This classic, written by the incomparable Margaret Atwood and published in 1985, was resurrected when media mogul, Hulu, went on to produce the television series in 2017. The President of the United States and most of Congress has been killed and the Sons of Jacob, a patriarchal group operating under the guise of religious ideology, have taken over. Women hold little power and have no voice. They cannot own property or make money—they aren’t even allowed to read or write. Environmental destruction and radiation has left the world a bleak place, deprived of hope and natural resources, including children. Infertility afflicts all but a small percentage of women who are forced into confinement to bear children for the upper ruling class of Commanders and their ruthless wives.

Set in fictional Gilead, the Handmaid’s Tale was written as a cautionary story—a warning, of what might happen if a democratic nation was overtaken by an authoritarian theocracy. When she penned it, Atwood famously said she didn’t put a single thing in the disturbing book that hadn’t happened somewhere in the world, in real life. The protagonist, named June, was born to a feminist mother. Educated, she had a career and married a divorced man named Luke. Together they had a daughter. After the military coup falls the government, Luke and June make a run for Canada, but they are caught, separated, and their daughter taken away. June is sent to a reeducation center to be indoctrinated in the dark ways of a new world. Renamed Ofred (of-Fred, for the commander who essentially owns her), June vacillates between hope and despair as she fights to survive, her ultimate goal to escape and reunite with her family.

What’s really scary is how elements of this book are occurring in present-day USA. If you didn’t devour it as part of your high school curriculum, get your hands on this book now. Winner of the 1985 Governor General’s award, it’s a difficult, but must read.

5/5 Cheers!

In the minds of many, exercise isn’t necessarily an enjoyable part of one’s day, but rather a necessary component in the quest for good health. They visit the gym, take a brisk walk, a long run or hit the home treadmill. Put those same people on a dance floor with great music and they forget that they’re exercising altogether!

KICK UP YOUR HEELS! BY DEANNA RAINEY

NOW, TAKE THAT CONCEPT AND ADD A TOUCH OF GLAMOUR AND A BIT OF SWEAT, AND YOU’VE FOUND AN ACTIVITY THAT IS TAKING THE OKANAGAN BY STORM. Dance is no longer just a traditional activity, people are gravitating towards unique dance studios such as; burlesque, pole, belly dancing and much more. Dance is sexy, super active and the interest just keeps growing!

These forms of dance have been around for a long time and women of all shapes, sizes and fitness levels are finding confidence and a higher degree of athleticism, all the while dancing their way to loving their bodies just a little bit more.

DANCE IS SEXY, SUPER ACTIVE AND THE INTEREST JUST KEEPS GROWING! The world of Pole Dancing is rapidly becoming more inclusive and pre-conceived notions are flying out the window. Erin Smith, proprietor of Okanagan Pole Dance and Aerial Fitness, says that athleticism is important, although you don’t have to be strong to start. “I had absolutely no experience and had just given birth to twins when I started,” she recalls. “Pole dance is a lot of fun and very different from going to the gym.” Pole dancing appeals to women – and men – for many reasons other than just physical benefits. Jill, a recently certified instructor, explains what has attracted her to this activity. “Pole teaches us how power and beauty can coexist, and that we don’t have to sacrifice our femininity to be strong and athletic.” Jill also believes that pole teaches women, in a society focused on outward appearance, to love their bodies for what they can do rather than how they look. 38 OKANAGAN WOMAN SPRING | 2019

A question pole dancers are asked is “what is the appropriate attire for pole dancing”. People see the booty shorts and sports bras and often wonder why dancers don’t dress more modestly! Well the answer is simple says Jill… “It’s for practicality and safety. The majority of poles are chrome, brass or stainless steel finished and fabrics won’t cling to these shiny, polished surfaces, making many pole dance moves almost impossible to do in longer shorts or pants. The more exposed skin we have, the easier it is to wrap around and hang on! We joke a lot in the pole community about our shorts. The more advanced you get, the shorter the shorts get” Jill laughs. Classes and workshops are offered for every level from beginner to advanced. The popular Introduction to Pole workshop is designed for newcomers, where they can quickly learn basic spins. “There is tons of laughter, great energy and a little bit of trepidation at our beginner classes. But people pick it up easily and they’re proud of themselves,” said Erin.

EMPOWERMENT THROUGH MOVEMENT

“IT ENCOURAGES WOMEN TO ENJOY A LITTLE ‘ME TIME’ to CONNECT WITH THEMSELVES and GIVE THEM PERMISSION TO BE SEXY” says Tina. A surprising number of men are joining the pole dance movement, and Erin says they’re usually a little more nervous than women. “Canada’s male Pole Dance champion trains with us. And lots of couples have met dancing!” Undoubtedly, Pole Dance is an amazing workout. “You’re working against your body weight, gravity and working around centrifugal force, all the while winding around a post. You will see results very fast. And it’s addictive… once you’ve reached a certain level, you’re not adding more weight or reps, but learning new tricks, which creates easy motivation,” Erin said. Tina Joslin, proprietor of Femme Fatale Burlesque, offers a form of dance she calls

‘burlesque fusion.’ “In our style of Burlesque, you don’t strip and it is done as a group, whereas Burlesque is usually individual dance,” she explained. The group slogan is ‘empowerment through movement’ and it encourages women to enjoy a little ‘me time’ to connect with themselves and give them permission to be sexy. Who are these up and coming burlesque dancers? They’re anyone from age 20 to 55 or older. The seven instructors offer two dropin classes a week, plus sixteen-week sessions during which they work on the big event… a live show that is open to the public. “It’s a big event,” says Tina.

THE MUSIC CROSSES MANY GENRES AND PARTICIPANTS DANCE TO THEMES LIKE VEGAS, DIVAS, TRIBUTES AND CANADIAN TALENT. The next show, scheduled for May 11 and 12, is based on one-hit-wonders!

“We sell about six hundred tickets!”

The other benefit of a group of women working together in this way, comes from the comradery that develops as they dance toward their live performance.

The women are very kind and encouraging with each other, and they connect tightly with women from all walks of life. While they are encouraged to participate in the live show, it isn’t mandatory. “There is a big core element involved. The dancers do a great deal of stretching… and they’re wearing heels. Athleticism helps, but it’s not absolutely necessary, nor is any previous experience. We teach the movements and go super slow. Our beginners are Level One and Two and at the other end of the scale, Level Five and Six, are for women who have been dancing their entire lives,” Tina said. The average sixteen-week session involves sixty to seventy women working together on their bodies, it’s a real confidence builder. OKANAGAN WOMAN SPRING | 2019 39

For those who want to try a little shimmying in a different way, check out Boundless Belly Dance in Penticton, owned by Keisha McLean. At age seven, Keisha had a family member teaching belly dancing. It resonated with her immediately, and as of April she will have been dancing for 15 years. Boundless has a professional troupe, a beginner troupe and solo dancers. The pros dance throughout BC and from April until December, they do about 50 performances, mostly in the Okanagan.

You can’t talk about dance without mentioning the fact that

it’s fun, lively and just a little sassy.

Feeling good on so many levels is a sensual experience that is hard to emulate.

WHETHER YOU SPIN, TWIRL, SWOOP, KICK UP YOUR HEELS OR SHIMMY AND SHINE, DANCE IS A GREAT WAY OF CONNECTING WITH YOUR INNER ATHLETE IN A PERSONAL, SENSORY AND HIGHLY CREATIVE WAY – SO WHY NOT GIVE IT A WHIRL!

HERE ARE A FEW SURPRISING STATS ABOUT BELLY DANCING. It is ageless, with participants ranging from age 17 to 93. While Boundless Belly Dancing works primarily with adults, Keisha has worked with a child as young as three. “We also have influential men in the belly dance industry. The progression we’re experiencing has meant more fluidity in terms of gender.” Keisha explains that they utilize the basics of belly dance, which originated in the Middle East, and as its popularity grew in the west, different forms of the dance popped up and the result is the creation of the Belly Dance Fusion.

The only thing you need to bring is an open mind. We have had lots of people say they can’t dance and they’re shocked at how well they do. We have many different classes, from Beginner to Belly Dance Cardio which is specifically for exercise and believe me, it’s a workout! We also hold monthly workshops, and individuals or groups can request their own custom workshops too. Boundless workshops average 1.5 hours and also offer a package where we can perform for you and your group, followed by a workshop.” Weekly drop-in classes concentrate on strength, core and flexibility building, with core and arm strength amongst the biggest benefits. You don’t have to invest in a costume…they have a huge variety of colourful, gorgeous costumes on site.

Located in the Cultural District, the Kelowna Community Theatre features more than 250 events annually including comedy, music, dance, film and theatrical performances.

There is an organization in Kelowna that has been in the business of offering hope for the last fifty years. It is called The Bridge, and it’s had a dramatic impact on the lives of thousands who have turned there for help in tough times.

HOPE in the Face of Addiction BY DEANNA RAINEY

L to R: Leslie Grenier, Brenda Epp, Jody Monk, Laurie Gaal, Michelle Wanstall, Sam McKenzie, Jamie McGregor and John Yarschenko

The Bridge has helped youth and adults in detox from both drugs and alcohol. It offers long term care for recovery and healing. The Bridge provides prevention, intervention and treatment programs. It has brought hope to many people suffering from alcohol or drug misuse and it offers family services; children and youth services; parenting education and support, and caregiver support. The overdose crisis and drug misuse continues to shatter lives month after month, and the headlines are terrifying and the outlook bleak. Families and friends of addicts are overwhelmed when they begin to understand the severity of addiction, and at the same time they have no idea where to turn. That’s where The Bridge comes in. While it cannot help absolutely everyone, they work exceedingly hard to touch the lives of as many people as possible. Like everyone on the front lines of the opioid crisis, people at The Bridge deal with the harsh realities every day, including a lack of facilities at some times. But they never give up and their greatest joy is to offer help to those who need it most. Celine Thompson, Executive Director of The Bridge, says that in spite of the increasing challenges, there have been glimmers of hope.

46 OKANAGAN WOMAN SPRING | 2019

“Recovery is not impossible. We see it every day,”

she says. “Part of the renewal process is talking to people about that success. The Bridge has been operating for 50 years now, and as Celine says, “it has become a touchstone for the most vulnerable families in the community.” Fifty years ago, the focus was primarily on kids and family counselling, foster parent support, working with kids in care and marginalized young people. In response to the changing world, and especially in the last six years, recovery and addiction programs are now half of the work they do. In a much-need attempt to provide people with a segue to talk about the issues, she points out that in the last year, 600 people went through their withdrawal management (detox) program. Like any organization, The Bridge faces issues regarding the incredible volume of people who need their help. Usually there is a minimum two to three week wait for detox, although sometimes it is faster. Prospective clients go through an extensive triage program so they can deal with the highest risk individuals as soon as possible.

“It is crucial that when people are feeling a strong desire and commitment to change, we can respond to them at that moment of courage. When they are finished their program, we try to keep in contact every day,” Celine explains. After detox comes treatment. Their 20-bed facility rotates every six weeks between men and women. The downside to this is that if a man cannot get into a program right now, they must wait until the men’s program is complete and then a 6 week lapse as women go through the process, leaving that man waiting up to three months for access. They do their very best to respond quickly to the needs of the individuals, balancing need with available access.

Looking to the future, The Bridge is working very hard to develop a youth recovery house.

“As pervasive as the problems have become, people are beginning to understand that they need to look at a different path. People are slowly beginning to realize that they can’t just sweep it under the rug. They seem willing to have some dialogue, and that is where change starts. Sitting through a graduation after someone has spent six weeks in the Bridgeway Treatment Program is extremely gratifying.” As John points out, The Bridge recognizes that they need individual treatments, not ‘one stop fits all.’ Their plan is to develop an approach that can be tapped throughout a person’s lifetime, whenever they need it. “We hear from addicts, parents and families and they are all telling us ‘I want this. I need this.’ The overall retention rate is about 90 per cent, so they really do want it!” Also, she adds, there are currently a mere 45 (funded) beds in all of BC for people under 19.

“It would be a state of the art facility for 16 people under 19 who are in recovery. The length of their stay would be based on the achievement of their objectives. That could result in a stay of up to six months. It’s going to be their second home,” Celine said.

During a personal visit to their two sites, I was introduced to many dedicated health professionals from all areas of who are all committed to their work. I experienced a true sense of commitment and fellowship.

Kelly Paley, Director of Fund Development, points out another important fact in the treatment of youth.

Programs are working well but The Bridge won’t rest on its’ laurels. After all, there is much more work to be done.

“Kids’ brains are still developing. We will be able to provide an opportunity to have a long term impact, giving them skills and strategies to handle personal crisis,” says Kelly. John Yarschenko, responsible for overseeing recovery and addiction services, agrees with Kelly.

For more information contact: Celine Thompson Executive Director of The Bridge Phone 250 763 0456 www.thebridgeservices.ca

“When it comes to substance abuse, it often involves a long period of negative behavior. We need to get to these young people earlier,” he says. Response to The Bridge’s plan for youth services has been both encouraging and inspiring. Much of their adult and youth programs surrounding withdrawal can be very trying times. In terms of withdrawal, alcohol is the most dangerous substance from which to detox. Opioid withdrawal is very painful, with physical pain often reaching extreme levels.

IF NOT NOW, WHEN?

“But hope is at the root of all of it,” says Celine.

And then a fervour of cleaning ensues in an attempt to rid ourselves of the clutter accumulated within those chilly months of repose.

WE ENDEAVOUR TO BE FOREVER ENVELOPED IN HOMES WITH PEACE, HARMONY AND JOYFUL TRANQUILITY. Ahh ...... the ZEN-ful panacea of it all! That idealistic bubble bursts quickly with a harsh reality check and we are forced to concede that our homes have evolved through a lifetime of various decisions. What initially starts with the concept of home, all too quickly becomes a maze of mumbo jumbo stuff. From necessities to cool memorabilia, hobbies, sports gear and travel-finds, everything ends up somewhat choked together into a happenstance plethora of domestic clutter. The Right Sizing movement is currently well underway with a deliberate focus on mindful purchasing and living within a gentler ecological footprint. This changemaking revolution is asking us all to do some serious bellybutton gazing, followed by the difficult task of analyzing our spending habits.

Generally - most of us use 20% of our possessions 80% of the time.

Running concurrently with the Right Sizing concept is the Hygge ideology; a Danish and Norwegian word to describe a mood of home-life coziness, friendship, and comfort snuggled around the emotional feelings of wellbeing, happiness and quiet contentment. The Hygge ideal is being fortified by the minimalism-inspired KonMari approach of organization, which integrates the happiness philosophy with personal possessions ensuring that each item must spark joy within us. By setting our intentions first with visualization, we are to disengage with the unnecessary accumulated baggage of life and embrace a more simplistic, organized and happier home.

LESS HOUSE BUT MAY I HAVE MORE HOME PLEASE…. We live in an era of incredible abundance and for many, the waistline on the interior of our homes has gained a great deal of unnecessary girth over the past few decades. Begin this year’s spring cleanup with a mindful practise by placing yourself on a possession diet.

YOU!

Realistically, we don’t need more space; we just need less stuff. Judicially administer the 3 R’s; Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, joined with a hefty dose of the three T’s; Treasure, Transfer, or Trash. Essentially what you take out of your home is equally as important as what you bring in to your home. We are all guilty of purchasing items intending to nourish our souls and fill a psychological void. When we’ve experienced too much “frugality fatigue”, we often splurge with entitlement shopping. We buy based on the rationale that we work hard for our income, therefore, we deserve it! The downside is that we eventually begin to drown in those compulsive moments, with our stuff unconsciously tormenting and holding us back emotionally. We end up saturated with layers of guilt and silent regret of all that hard-earned money we’ve spent wastefully. Confronting those guilt demons can take a great deal of mental courage. With a frank re-assessment and heavy dose of sensible logic, we know that there is no real need to horde anything away. Ultimately, it’s way better to donate than it is to accumulate. The multitude of Right Sizing lifestyle philosophies help us to rethink the concept ‘ownership’. Reforming your personal perception, stepping away from materialistic attachments and releasing old habits, creates a disciplined mindfulness that begins with passing on overabundance.

By organizing our household items and consciously being more efficient with the use of available home space, we are given a refreshing new start to a

‘JUST RIGHT’ HEALTHY AND HAPPY HOME-LIFE.

Don’t Shut Out the Sun… just Outsmart the Harmful UV Rays!

THERE ARE MANY MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT ULTRAVIOLET LIGHT (UV) AND ITS DAMAGING RAYS. UV IS A SPECTRUM OF LIGHT THAT IS INVISIBLE TO THE HUMAN EYE YET IS INCREDIBLY DAMAGING TO OUR HOMES AND SKIN. If you often sit by a window in your office, at a kitchen table or in a sunroom one of the recommended safeguards against UV exposure is a well-chosen window film.

FREE CONSULTATION AND QUOTE

UV rays break down the chemical bonds in dyes and natural fibers causing the colour of objects to fade - it is a bleaching effect. UV rays fade and dry out wood furniture and floors, weaken fabrics causing rips and tears, carpet fibers can become brittle and decompose and art loses its vibrant colours. UV is the primary contributor to fade, but there are several other lesser contributors, like fluctuations in temperature, and excessive heat. Until recently the only defense has been the use of curtains or blinds to physically block the sun, but this also blocks the view and light. With recent advances in technology there are now window films that tackle the three major causes of fading including 99.9% UV blockage. These window films allow abundant filtered light, block up to 79% of the sun’s heat and can dramatically improve the comfort of your home. Older windows allow in more UV than newer windows, but even new windows commonly allow through 40-70% of the sun’s UV rays. A window film professional uses a UV meter to determine exactly how much UV is being filtered by the glass and if a window film can provide additional protection.

New windows are often sold on their virtues of energy efficiency, sound isolation and beautiful design, but the UV component is difficult for glass companies to adequately solve and this is where a window film may be the solution. House plants thrive with window film because it allows plentiful visible light that plants require for photosynthesis, but filters out the damaging high levels of UV and heat that causes burnt leaves and varied pigmentation. Sunlight filtered with window film emulates the light that plants would naturally receive in the tropical environment filtered by the high-level forest canopy.

In addition to your home and plants loving filtered sunlight, the benefits of reduced UV exposure on our skin is another huge benefit. Most people know that prolonged exposure to sunlight can lead to melanoma, but we do little to protect ourselves while indoors. In our northern climate, we spend much of the year indoors, and so may be exposed to more UV while inside our homes than we would ever assume.

Film options available with these benefits • up to 99.9% UV rejection • up to 79% heat rejection • up to 90% glare reduction

Eat Organic? SLEEP ORGANIC!

“Unfortunately, the term organic is thrown around loosely. Customers recently visiting our store, believed they bought a queen sized organic mattress for $399 from a large mattress store, just because it had ‘organic cotton’ embossed on the fabric,” says McLeary.

We all have to eat, and changing our diet is a very good thing, but we also need to sleep, and yet most of us don’t give a second thought on what we sleep on, or what we place over top of us. Back in the day, most mattresses were made of natural materials and what we ate was much the same, no GMO’s, hormones, antibiotics, and very little processed foods. Then, in 1967 everything changed - polyurethane foam was introduced into our lives and plastics became more prevalent. We all started sleeping on toxic goo and synthetic materials. Cancer rates and respiratory issues rose exponentially, almost overnight - coincidence? The last couple of decades have seen a return to natural and organic foods as people realize that good health starts in our kitchens. Unfortunately, we can’t stop there. The bedroom is just as important to our health. We’ve made great strides with medical advancements, new drugs and technology, yet more and more people are getting sicker (per capita not just because of population growth)?

One of the most advertised memory foam mattress brands in the market introduces the sleeper to more than 61 VOC’s (volatile organic compounds), 20% being known carcinogens with 4 of them being benzene’s and if that’s not enough, it emits formaldehyde. The memory foam made overseas is even worse. Imagine sleeping 7-8 hours a night, or a third of your life in a mattress that is slowly poisoning you.

The bedroom should be our sanctuary, our healing space, and the place of dreams. “With good health being one of our main concerns, we see more of our clients looking for greener options,” says Carling McLeary, manager of Sleepy’s.

The absolute purest organic mattress.

The natural and organic mattress & bedding categories continue to grow in popularity and Sleepy’s have focused on bringing only the best in each category to their customers. “Our latest introduction takes our organic mattress and bed linen offerings to the next level” says Geoff McLeary - owner of Sleepy’s. “We have partnered with OMI (Organic Mattress Inc.), the first GOTS certified Eco Factory in North America and the only organic mattress maker that offers a Purity Guarantee. OMI is the only company in N. America that sanitizes for purity by ozone, uses treated air and are audited randomly four times a year. Each mattress is made by hand, offers two-sided variable firmness, and are backed by a 20 year warranty. We have showcased four of their more popular certified organic mattresses in different price points including the Pinnacle, which they consider to be a lifetime mattress. We are very excited to offer our clients only the best in certified organic!” Our bed is a very personal space that encases our bodies, much like a cocoon. The bedding that surrounds you should be breathable, acclimatizing to each sleeper, naturally anti-microbial, made with naturally sourced fibres and not treated with any chemicals. Geoff and Carling have hand-picked a beautiful collection of green to organic pillows, sheet sets, natural duvets, mattresses and mattress toppers to complete the cocoon.

If organic options are on your radar, Sleepy’s advise you to do your research and let common sense prevail.

OUTDOOR LIVING WITH

PHANTOM SCREENS

It’s funny how something so simple — like screens that roll back and disappear — can make people so happy, but they do. Serving the beautiful Okanagan area, Phantom Screens creates retractable screens for doors, windows, outdoor spaces, and now the ever-popular multi-panel system. Conventional screens tend to compromise the beauty of a home, block the views, diminish natural daylight, and make routine cleaning difficult. Phantom’s screens retract out of sight when not in use and are a beautiful alternative to old-fashioned framed screens. Phantom Screens are a visually appealing and easily integrated solution for the common drawbacks of an outdoor lifestyle — like insects, weather and lack of privacy. They’re only in place when you need them, and retract completely out of sight when you don’t. Additionally, you have the choice of insect mesh or clear vinyl - so in the heat of the summer you can keep the cool air in and during the winter you can keep the cold air out. Of course, these perfect spring days are also made better because you get fresh air, natural ventilation and no mosquitoes!

As North America’s leading provider of retractable screens for doors, windows and large openings, Phantom Screens offers a wide variety of screens that blend with any architectural style – including our motorized retractable screens which now extend up to 40 feet wide and our new retractable screens for multi-panel door systems. You can choose from one of our standard colours or wood grain options

or even custom colour match to your home’s design. Retractable screens allow you to experience the best of both worlds: letting the fresh air in without worry about the bugs. You can even connect our motorized screens to your home automation system or smart phone app that allows you to program the screens to lower or retract at specific times of day.

For more information about retractable screen options, go to PhantomScreensOkanagan.com or call 1-888-PHANTOM or 250-762-7592 to talk to Somers Screens - Phantom’s local representative for Kelowna and the Okanagan Valley! OKANAGAN WOMAN SPRING | 2019 59
