Editor’s note! I've been travelling around in January in search of inspiration, and I definitely found it! I visited design trade shows, discovered many new designers and awesome brands, took loads of pictures, and brought back dozens of magazines. I'm back home for some days already and I'm still digesting all information collected during the trip. I wanted to share with you some of the best home decorating trends I spotted, as well as some my favorite products from Scandinavian designers that will help you to easily integrate the trends into your current décor. Marble! Marble has been increasingly popular throughout 2013 and it looks like the trend is here to stay! Marble can go with any style. Make it chic by teaming it up with brass, or understated when combined with a black and white palette. Use it in smaller doses for a budget-friendly way to add a contemporary touch to your home, or search for easy DIY projects like this one from IKEA's Swedish blog Livet Hemma. If you can afford it, you can also go full-on with statement walls, cabinets, countertops, etc. for a striking effect. Inspired by the beauty and sophistication of this natural stone, designers from around the world are using it in unexpected ways. I've noticed that not only white marble is enjoying a renaissance. At recent design shows, I've seen black marble, as well as a more daring green version, too. And I'm ready to bet we'll see more of this coloured stone in the coming months! Brass revival! All that glitters is no longer silver - From glowing faucets, burnished door knobs, honeyed furniture to shiny lamps, brass is making a comeback! Brass was in vogue back in the '70s, but was quickly snubbed by designers that saw it as old-fashioned. Decades later, Brit designer Tom Dixon was among the first to reintroduce brass with the launch of his very popular Beat pendant lights in 2006. A few years later, brass is experiencing an undeniable resurgence and is the metal of the moment, putting an end to the four-decade reign of silver tones. Loved for its warmth, rich gleam, timelessness and artisanship, brass surprisingly adds fresh touches to any decor. It is contemporary, but has an authentic beauty and personality. An ethnic touch! Another trend to watch his year is taking inspiration from cultures all over the world. It consists of a blend of modern and ethnic rustic, for an eclectic fusion of styles! To get the look, I recommend having a natural colour scheme on your wall, floor and ceiling, to serve as a canvas for accessories with bolder patterns and stronger colours. The goal is to create interesting and playful contrasts. Don't be afraid to play with textures and ethnic origins; think bamboo furniture, North African rugs, Inca prints, vibrant fabric from India, etc. Add a few exotic plants and cactuses to the mix for a fresh look. During my trip to Stockholm a few weeks ago, I saw many products from Scandinavian brands with that ethnic touch. Here are some of my favourite home furnishings:

Natural Minimalism! One of the trends to watch in 2014 is along the lines of what I call 'natural minimalism'. Simplicity is the rule of thumb, and quality over quantity is key. Taking inspiration from nature, this trend is all about a calming colour palette of beautiful and muted shades of cream, beige, sand, grey and white. Use these warm, cosy and neutral hues with soft fabrics, organic shapes and natural materials such as wood, leather, wool, stone, etc. to create a timeless and stylish look. La Vie en Rose!
While pale pink has been a major favorite in the last few years (see here a 2012 post, 'Going Pink'), it is still very trendy this season! This color is beautiful and sophisticated when combined with all shades of grey, and brass or copper accents. The mix of sparkly details with matte effects creates a harmonious whole. Whether you prefer a more classic or modern look, rosé hues can add a sophisticated and elegant touch. Just make sure you use it sparingly: The season's look is all about discreet luxury rather than overly sweet and romantic. See below my favorite picks in soft pink: 1. E27 pendant, Muuto 2. Radiant orchid! This is not exactly a trend per se, but I decided to include it in my series anyway because Radiant Orchid is the colour of the year 2014, according to Pantone: "Expressive, exotic Radiant Orchid blooms with confidence and warmth! (...) An invitation to innovation, Radiant Orchid encourages expanded creativity and originality, which is increasingly valued in today’s society. (...) An enchanting harmony of fuchsia, purple and pink undertones, Radiant Orchid inspires confidence and emanates great joy, love and health. It is a captivating purple, one that draws you in with its beguiling charm." - Click here to read more. I'm personally not a big fan of this bright hue for my home décor, so here's my take on the shade of the year: Deeper shades of plum, mauve and aubergine, which are fresh and interesting, and not as feminine as pink (another trend in 2014).
