The Christmas of !

Lotta Agaton! Lotta is a fantastic interior stylist from Sweden. She can turn any interior into an interesting, beautiful and sophisticated space. She has “a minimalist style with a personal twist”, as she describes it. I am a big fan of her work, and she is often featured on Nordic Design. Q: How do you usually celebrate the holiday season? A: I always spend Christmas with my family, normally at my place.

Q: How do you like to decorate your home at Christmas? # A: I love to bring in lots of branches of pine and fir, and place them everywhere in different vases… And with a big Christmas tree.

Q: What does the perfect Christmas tree looks like? # A: Mine is full of small yarn Santas that my father has made for me. When I was a kid, we used to have about five of them that my grandmother made herself, and I loved them so much! I always said “when I grow up, I am going to have a Christmas tree full of these.” So for the first Christmas at my own apartment, my father made 50 Santas for me and they have been decorating my Christmas tree ever since. I also like to add candles and ornaments my kids made.

Q: What is your favorite Christmas memory and/or tradition? # A: I love Christmas mornings when we are all having breakfast on the sofa, under a blanket and in our pajamas, starting to open presents because we can’t wait!

Q: Which song(s) is guaranteed to be on the playlist during the Holidays? # A: The old classic American ones like Frank Sinatra.

The Christmas of !

Søren Rose! This talented Danish designer now lives in New York, and created his own firm, Søren Rose Studio. He recently launched this gorgeous Tribeca collection of light fixtures for Menu. Discover more of his beautiful work here. Q: How do you usually celebrate the holiday season? A: For the last couple of years I’ve been working on client projects, we often have deadlines just before Thanksgiving, Christmas, Labor Day or Memorial Day So we are normally so busy that we end up not going anywhere. Last Christmas we stayed in Tribeca with my wife and 3 kids and made incredible food, relaxed, played and read fairytales to the cozy sound of wood burning in our fireplace. Q: How do you like to decorate your home at Christmas? # A: We always have a pine tree - and actually came up with a fun sustainable tradition 4 years ago when we moved to New York, we have the same tree year after year! It’s actually becoming a well grown tree. The rest of the year it stays on our rooftop above the apartment. I also always triple the amount of candles in our apartment during Christmas – But I try to keep actual decorations at a minimum. We have a few things that we inherited from our respective families, but that’s about it. After all I am a minimalist. Q: What does the perfect Christmas tree looks like? # A: It’s alive and not completely covered in glitter & stuff. The things that go on our tree are things that we made in our families over time, and we always make something new each year, so it doesn’t look like the Rockefeller’s tree, but rather tells a story and reminds us of previous celebrations. Q: Which song(s) is guaranteed to be on the playlist during the Holidays? # A: We sing all the Danish classic Christmas songs. I’m not sure of the translation, but it’s something like: A child is born in Bethlehem, Happy Christmas, It’s Christmas again. 27 | Nordic Design Christmas 2014

Q: What is your favorite Christmas memory and/or tradition? # A: When I was 9 years old, Santa came as usual around 8pm with presents for everybody. At that time I obviously had figured out that it was my Dad who was dressed up, but at 10pm, when everybody was relaxing around the fireplace in my childhood home, there was a sudden knock on the door – And there was Santa Claus again! My parents were speechless, me and my brother and sister were so excited. We didn’t have any idea of who this could be. We only found out on New Years eve that is was one of my father’s good friends. I don’t think any of us will ever forget Erik’s prank!

Jonas Bjerre-Poulsen! Co-founder of NORM Architects, Jonas creates awardwining interiors, architecture and products. He also takes fabulous pictures – Seems everything he touches turns to success! A look at his work will show you why he’s so sought-after. Q: How do you usually celebrate the holiday season? A: I have a big family and like most other people I spend Christmas enjoying their company in a quiet and relaxed atmosphere. It’s all about “hygge” and having as much time as possible, doing absolutely nothing together. It’s wonderful, and one of my favorite seasons. Q: How do you like to decorate your home at Christmas? # A: I try not to do too much. Being very minimalist, I can’t stand too many decorative objects in the home. There is plenty of it everywhere you move and it takes focus away from the essence of being together with people.

Q: What does the perfect Christmas tree looks like? # A: To me it is a combination of the perfect composition in terms of shapes, color and harmony - spiced up with a few nostalgic objects from my wife’s grandmother. It´s important to me that every piece gets space and can stand out without drowning. I always go to cut down the tree with my son and it takes time to find the right one.

Q: Which song(s) is guaranteed to be on the playlist during the Holidays? # A: In 1995 the Danish theatrical group Dr. Dante made a Christmas Calendar show for adults on Danish Television called “Juletestamentet”. The intro song was performed by the Swedish/Danish Jazz singer Caroline Henderson and is really wonderful. Q: What is your favorite Christmas memory and/or tradition? # A: There are so many and I can’t really set them apart. But I know I need to be close to the city, so I can take a walk and see the lights from all the windows in the other houses and smell the making of Christmas dinners. That really puts me in mood. I have tried once to celebrate Christmas in the countryside and it was a total disaster. I missed other people.

It´s all about ‘hygge’… It’s wonderful, and one of my favorite seasons.

The Christmas of !

Jenni Juurinen! Jenni is a professional set designer, decorating editor and stylist based in Helsinki. She has creativity and vision, and is definitely talented and versatile. She currently works for Deko-magazine and other projects.

Q: How do you usually celebrate the holiday season? A: I celebrate Christmas at my own home in Helsinki with my family. We normally invite our parents, our siblings and their spouses and organize a big dinner. Normally we dine for two nights so that we can invite everyone. Eating, being together and having long conversations are the main things. And since we have children in the house, Santa Claus visits in person.

Q: How do you like to decorate your home at Christmas? # A: I like to keep things simple and I’m not a big Christmas decorator at home. I would be happy to have just some candles and a real spruce tree but my children of course wish to have some Christmas decorations in the house. We also put some lanterns outside.

“ I let my kids

decorate the tree. We have a box full of ornaments and they can hang them whichever way they want.

”!

31 | Nordic Design Christmas 2014

Q: What is your favorite Christmas memory and/or tradition? # A: My favorite tradition is to just hang out with the dearest and the nearest. Christmas is a great time to sit down and relax, have good conversations and read good books. And since we normally have quite a bit of snow, it’s also a great time to go skiing or skating.

Q: What does the perfect Christmas tree looks like? # A: Mine would be a real spruce tree with just white ornaments. I don’t like glitter or gold. In reality I let my kids decorate the tree since it is so much fun for them. We have a box full of ornaments and they can hang them whichever way they want. I do not interfere. In Finland we bring the tree into the house three-four days before Christmas so that it lasts for the whole holiday season.

Q: Which song(s) is guaranteed to be on the playlist during the Holidays? # A: We don’t have any traditions for holiday songs, but each year we watch the Snowman animation on television with the kids.

Special DIY Feature!

June’s Christmas!

Norwegian June Olsen is a mom and creative blogger passionate about interior design. From her home in the UK, she shares her favorite DIY projects on her lovely blog Nostalgiecat. She enthusiastically agreed to collaborate to Nordic Design’s 2014 Christmas magazine, with this special DIY feature. Hi everyone, Having lived in the UK for over 15 years I feel a nostalgic longing towards all things Scandinavian, especially around Christmas time. Since having my little girl, Mia, it has become more important to me than ever to hold on to those Nordic Christmas traditions that I grew up with. We always start the celebrations of the holidays early December, lighting a candle on our Advent wreaths every Sunday leading up till Christmas. We also have an Advent calendar. The whole month is spent preparing the house, cleaning, decorating, preparing food and baking for the big celebrations on the 24th, when the whole family comes together for a feast and a party. I believe Scandinavians have a less commercial approach to Christmas than most European nationalities. We put a lot of emphasis on handmade decorations and gifts. People decorate their home with green firs and other evergreens, a tradition that stems back from pagan times. It is also usual to bake cookies we readily offer as gifts to our loved ones we visit over the holidays. There is something wholesome and genuine about the way Scandinavians approach the Christmas season, and it is becoming more and more important to me. I try to encapsulate this spirit by finding little projects me an Mia can do together throughout the run up to the 25th of December. Here's a few suggestions I selected for you, and that I personally look forward to do this year. I hope you enjoy them too. Have a great Christmas! June x 55 | Nordic Design Christmas 2014

Himmeli-inspired garland This is a great DIY from Pinja, a blogger based out of Helsinki, Finland. It was a special feature for ‘My Scandinavian Christmas’ series on The House That Lars Built in 2013. It is inspired by the traditional Finnish Himmeli, an ornament made of straw and hung from the ceiling at Christmas time.
