LET US ENTERT ENTERTAIN Y OU: OU: WOMEN OF THE WORLD POETRY SLAM

T

his year, Albuquerque is home to the 8th Annual Women of the World Poetry Slam on March 18-21 all over Downtown. Poetry slams are live dramatic readings of poems. Still not interested? Well, how about this. Five members of the audience are chosen and given scorecards. The audience then cheers and boos the judge’s rankings. So no dark smoke-filled coffee shops filled with misery. There will be 72 constants flying in from as far as New Zealand to compete. On March 18, at Stereo Bar, the WOWPS kicks off with the Last Chance Slam. 71 slots at the event are taken this slam is a competition the first night for slot 72. It’s also the only slot contestants don’t have to rise up through the ranks to claim. Yes, you read that correctly. Across the world there are hubs for poetry slam competitors.

They compete and hone their skills for this and other poetry slam competitions. This isn’t just people reading poetry, this is people doing performance art. When a slam poet takes the stage they are dynamic and expressive similar to an actor performing Shakespeare. Sometimes the poems they read are written out over years and some make them up right on the spot. Judges are chosen from the audience to score the performers on their pieces. But, here is where it gets really fun. The audience can cheer or boo the judges decisions and influence score changes - a truly interactive poetry event. So, if you don’t think you like poetry, or expect it to be a smoke-filled room with emo teenagers, you couldn’t be more wrong. Excitement and competition that will rival your local sporting events, this is a weekend not to be missed.. - Winter Elise

THE 5: TAI CHI CHIH

Tell me a little bit about the basis of Tai Chi Chih and how it differs from Tai Chi Chuan? The basis of T’ai Chi Chih rests on the principle in Chinese medicine, which holds that maintenance of good health comes with the circulation and balancing of the vital force in the body, known as ‘chi’ in Chinese. This is the same principle found in acupuncture treatments. T’ai Chi Chuan and T’ai Chi Chih are fundamentally different. T’ai Chi Chih can be roughly translated to mean, “knowledge of the Supreme Ultimate” or “knowledge of Reality”; it is a moving meditation, and regular practice can bring enhanced health and serenity to the practitioner. There are only 19 movements; each movement is done nine times on the left side of the body and nine times on the right, which makes it very easy to learn. In contrast, T’ai Chi Chuan is the ancestral root of the martial arts and means ‘knowledge of supreme boxing’. The movements are

stylized blocking and striking postures, and there are 108 patterns, which make it much more difficult to learn. Justin Stone taught Tai Chi Chuan for 20 years, and he often commented on the high drop out rate in classes; Americans, he said, grew frustrated with the difficulty of learning all the movements. Furthermore, he commented, it would take a good two years of dedicated practice for most of his students to feel the circulation and balancing of the vital force in the body. In 1974, Justin Stone created T’ai Chi Chih. The movements came to him fairly rapidly, and he experimented with various patterns until he settled on those that are known today as T’ai Chi Chih. It is very common that beginning students feel the circulation and balancing of the body’s vital force during the first eight-week class. Because of this speedy result, students stick with the practice. How long does it take to learn TCC and where can someone do that? March 2015

7

T’ai Chi Chih is very easy to learn since there are only 19 movements and one pose. All the movements can easily be learned in one eight-week class, meeting once a week. Because each movement is repeated nine times on the left side of the body and nine times on the right before moving on to the next movement, it is easy to remember the movements. T’ai Chi Chih is taught by accredited instructors throughout the world. In Albuquerque, it is taught at senior centers, health clubs such as Defined Fitness, and at the non-profit T’ai Chi Chih Center. Someone looking for a class, can go to www.TaiChiChihAssociation.org or www.TaiChiChih.org and find hundreds of teachers and sites where it is taught. Personally can you tell me how TCC and being a teacher of TCC has changed your life? Justin Stone told me years ago that the most frequent letters he got were from people who told him “T’ai Chi Chih has changed my life.” It has certainly changed mine! I took my first class in 1996 because I was suffering from panic attacks as well as severe back pain. During the first eight-week class, both of these chronic conditions almost completely disappeared, and they are no longer problems in my life. I have had many students who have had similar dramatic results from the practice. One student had been scheduled for thyroid surgery, and she cancelled it because her thyroid function normalized. Another lost 35 pounds even though she didn’t change her diet! Another had had weekly migraines since she was 12, and they have almost completely disappeared. Most of these students went on to become T’ai Chi Chih instructors due to the dramatic improvements in their well being. How does such a slow and peaceful movement help to improve a person’s health and function? 8

March 2015

When we watch someone do T’ai Chi Chih, it appears that they are moving through very heavy air; it looks like they are doing almost nothing. There are only three basic principles that they are following: complete weight shift, circularity with the hands and wrists, and polarity positions with the hands; in many of the movements, the hands face each other, which is called ‘polarity’. These three principles cause the vital energy of the body to circulate and balance, which often brings dramatic improvements in felt well being. There have been many medical studies done on T’ai Chi Chih. The UCLA Medical Center studied the effect of T’ai Chi Chih on the shingles virus and found that there was a 50% enhanced immunity to the virus among practitioners. The National Arthritis Foundation specifically endorsed T’ai Chi Chih as being excellent for strengthening the joints and keeping them flexible. The Mayo Clinic study showed a 40% reduction in falls among the elderly who practiced it. What advice do you have to someone thinking about trying TCC for the first time? When people tell me they’re thinking of trying a T’ai Chi Chih class, I tell them to participate with an open mind, a happy heart, and a relaxed body. There are no special clothes or shoes to buy, and the movements are so soft and gentle, they don’t have to worry about hurting themselves. It’s a great way for people to learn how to take care of their minds, bodies, and spirits. Furthermore, it’s something they can do for themselves their entire life, and they can do it alone or in groups. The T’ai Chi Chih Center has free practice sessions every week for anyone who has completed a beginning class. So it’s a very affordable investment in their health, and some of the nicest people I’ve ever met are T’ai Chi Chih students and teachers, and they’ve become close - Winter Elise friends.

NOW SHOWING: JUPITER IS ASCENDING IN MY PANTS By Angry Men Reviews

“This movie jumps around more than your sister in a NFL player’s dorm room.”

T

his movie is bad. Like really bad. I can easily tell why they didn’t release it last summer and instead pushed it to the death valley of movie release times, early February. I will say as you watch this movie, it could have been a great movie. There are a bunch of ideas in here that could be made into another multi movie property that could have kept the Wachowskis going for another decade. In the end it felt that someone didn’t have the balls to believe it would be successful and told them to push it all into one meal, like your mom tries to do with any pie she comes across. So in this case it isn’t the concept that ruined this movie because I found it super interesting, it isn’t that acting that ruins this movie as just about everyone at least put in a competent performance, and it wasn’t really the script even if some of the romantic dialog got corny at times (at least it didn’t get Anikin Skywalker level of corny). No, this movie felt like it was killed in the editing room. This movie jumps around more than your sister in a NFL player’s dorm room, leaving the viewer just sitting there going “What the hell was that all about?”. For example there is a kind of fun scene when some common honey bees respond to Jupiter (Mila Kunis)

because they can sense she is “Royalty”, but then they never explain what the hell royalty is in their universe! Are they just heads of giant corporations? Are they actual rulers? If so then after Jupiter becomes a Queen why can’t she just start yelling “Off with their head!” and just take power away from her rivals? Give me some FUCKING ANSWERS people! You aren’t being mysterious, your being jackasses of fucking epic proportions! Look, I don’t need every little detail, just the ones that fucking HAVE TO DO WITH THE STORY! Sorry, I just lost it a bit there, but I called your mom and let her talk dirty to me for a while and now I feel much better. Anyway, even with how horrible it is, this may be one of those “So bad it’s good” kind of things. The action is good, the visuals are outstanding, and Channing Tatum looks like one of the hobbits from Lord of the Rings while having boots that let him surf everywhere. So yeah, maybe if you take a bunch of drugs, hit yourself in the head a few times, then watch the movie, you may like it. Or, maybe you are some kind of movie masochist like me and somehow find enjoyment out of the most painful movie experiences. I still like “Howard the Duck” dammit! March 2015

March 2015

T

he name Mary Wilson is synonymous with a legend. A founding member of The Supremes, Wilson has created a long line of hits in her repertoire. Stormy Weather, the “living, breathing, biography” of Lena Horne, combines story, song and images to give us a defining portrait of the groundbreaking entertainer. A thrilling performer and a valiant crusader for justice, Lena Horne’s life and music still serve as standards for passion and commitment. Wilson is excited to be taking on the legendary artist. Lena Horne was someone Wilson looked up to as a child. “I grew up admiring Ms. Horne, so when I saw that Mr. James Gavin had written a book about her, I couldn't wait to get my hands on it. I ran into Mr. Gavin and he asked me if I would be interested in bringing his book to life.” The show features Mary

Wilson on lead performing, with a jazz trio, Lena’s music while biographer James Gavin brings us rare audio and video footage from the courageous, controversial singer’s life. “The Lena Horne project is a multi media event. It has many film clips of Ms. Horne speaking, as well as singing. The Civil Rights movement is well documented throughout the performance. Ms Wilson enters throughout the show just as mystically as Ms. Horne did in the movies.” Check out this amazing show at Popejoy Hall on March 14 at 8:00pm.
