Separate Tables A

s the year of 2018 is fast approaching, West End Productions has chosen their final presentation of the season. Terence Rattigan’s Separate Tables was first produced in London in 1954. A series of two one-acts, *set eighteen months apart in the lounge and dining room of a small hotel on the south coast of England, are “deftly woven together into an intelligent, handsome” comedy/drama. The play examines social attitudes towards lifestyles and behavior deemed morally reprehensible in 1950s Britain. Director, James Cady, remembers the first time he saw the production. “[I was first introduced to the work in] 1964 at the Pasadena Playhouse where I was a student – I was not in it and too young to direct it, but I had the pleasure of seeing it 9I

NME • September 2018

(as well as the movie). I remember it as an incredibly emotional experience.” Cady has once again gather together some of Albuquerque’s finest actors. The leads of the production, newcomers. H.K. Phillips and Matthew Van Wettering, will be playing the leads, Ann and John. Cady shared what the duo will provide to the production. “Great acting and sensitivity that these two bring to all their work – we are blessed to have them in our theatre community. Each of these actors play two different leading roles – totally disparate in emotion, and outlook on life. The characters have in common: to get through life in spite of what is thrown at them, and at each other. Both Phillips and Van Wettering recently appeared

“I would like them to be grateful for what they have in life.” in Shakespeare on the Plaza’s “As You Like It”. Not only will they play the roles of Ann and John, in Act 1, but they will also play the roles of Sybil and Major Pollock in Act 2. The production also stars newcomers Lauren Jehle and Robin Havens-Parker, a relocated actor from Washington, DC who has been a “welcome addition to the Albuquerque theatre community” shared Cady. Other notable performers are Margie Maes, Colleen Neary McClure, Ray Orley,

10 I

Linda Sklov, Carolyn Ward, Carolyn Wickwire and Michael Weppler. Cady’s reason for direct this play bring him back to when he first saw the production and what he can offer to have it jump off the stage. “It is a stunningly brilliant and provocative play evoking memories that haunt us all. There are lessons to be learned here about loneliness, compassion, prejudice and honesty which are all laid bare and are as relevant today as they were fifty years ago.” When it comes to what Cady wants the audience to leave the theater feeling, it is a very simple message, “I would like them to be grateful for what they have in life.” Separate Tables will run at the North 4th Art Center on 4904 4th St. NW, from October 5th-28th, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 PM, Sunday matinees at 2 PM. TURN IT UP

Swingin’ Utters comes to Albuquerque

I

f the name alone doesn’t grab you, nothing will. Swingin’ Utters oozes uniqueness, but it doesn’t end at their name. Their music speaks for itself - offering the traditional punk feel while providing a fresh roll and rock, sometimes a ska feeling. Many got to catch their set at The Launchpad on August 30th, but we wanted to learn more about the band beyond their one night gig. It’s easy to say you’re punk. How would you describe your music? Our music is showcase of all the different music we listen to. Punk is what everyone wants to call it, so who are we to argue? Would you say Peace And Love is a true labor of love? I would say that. We just want to create a record that’s different from the last. Music is definitely a labor of love for 11 I

NME • September 2018

every band member. On “P&L” you can hear that love. Well, I can. Where did the inspiration for this album come from? Peace And Love is our most political album to date. Sexism and racism have been around since the beginning of time. When it’s in the White House, it gives these fuckers a voice. Peace And Love is our reaction. We’ll lose fans, but only the hateful. There were three different songwriters, three different minds, working on this album. How was the camaraderie? I feel 5 different minds created this album. We all love each other, and it makes the process so much easier. The more we create together with love, the more confident, familiar and open we are with each other.

“Undertaker, Undertake”, when I hear it has an interesting mix of punk and a little ska. What was the feeling you were going for? What inspired it? Ska? I don’t think so, but all our songs are open for interpretation. Jack sent me the music and the first thing I came up with was singing “Undertaker, undertake” in Lemmy/Frankie Stubbs voice. It’s about depression and suicide. Writing songs like this one is therapeutic for me and my battles with my demons. You’ll be finishing a gig here in Albuquerque at the time of this article. What are your future plans? It took four years for Peace And Love working on that next album? We’ll tour for this record and then get back to work. It didn’t take 4 years to write Peace And Love, but it took that long because Miles (Peck) bowed out amicably and we searched for a bass player. Tony hooked up with us and

we g o t the ball rolling. I wrote a lot of songs over that time and Darius put out a solo record. Jack and Darius have a lot songs written as well, so it won’t take 4 years for our next one. Finding time to do this is difficult. We all have family and jobs that we plan time around. - NME - Teresa Ewers Photo credit Alan Snodgrass

omedy has a new home in Albuquerque. After the loss of Laff’s almost ten years ago, the comedy community has become gypsies, moving from venue to venue to give the city a good laugh. The migration comes to a halt today. Kimothy Spark, the triple threat (Owner/Operator; Promoter) will open an all-new venue, The Comedy Vault, on 4th Street and Central in Downtown Albuquerque. The club is scheduled to open in November of this year. Sparks is excited about what this venue will provide to the community. “The Comedy Vault will provide weekly entertainment featuring national “big name” headliners weekly,” shared Sparks. “All headliners will have been featured on late night entertainment, televised comedy specials, etc. The community will have an opportunity to come out and relax and enjoy quality live entertainment at a reasonable price. Albuquerque is currently one of the only large metro areas without an exclusive comedy club.” The Comedy Vault will not only bring nationally headlining acts but will provide a space for local comedians to share their art. “Albuquerque has a very vibrant and active local comedy scene,” boast Sparks. “Featuring local comedians as hosts and feature acts, as well as 13 I

NME • September 2018

giving them their own weekly “open mic” is allowing the local talent to thrive in a professional venue, practice and enhance their craft, and give those with the premium talent the base for which to become national headliners.” As a prelude to the opening, TCV will partner with The Hyatt Downtown to present four weekends of local and professional comedians performing a total of eighteen shows to set the stage for the tentative November opening of The Vault. The show will feature comedian Lahna Turner on Friday, August 31st through Sunday, September 2nd. Comedian John Roy will perform on Friday, September 7th and Saturday, September 8th with two shows nightly. The shows will also take place during the Albuquerque’s International Balloon Fiesta. Comedian Jen Kober will perform five shows from Friday, October 5th through Sunday, October 7th. Comedian Erik Myers will perform two shows nightly from Friday, October 12th through Saturday, October 13th. Local comedians Steve Costa, Nicolina Nicthe, Holly Byrd, and Kendra Jean Brand will also perform. Tickets and information about The Comedy Vault can be found at www.abqcomedy.com.

BOY

GEORGE 14 I

NME • September 2018

“Do you think we’ll have a great audience?”

I

was surprised to be asked that question by Boy George, the flamboyant, soulful, lead singer of the legendary band Culture Club. I mean, it’s Culture Club! The moment we discovered that they would be stepping foot on the Sandia Amphitheater stage on September 27th, the community lost their minds. For many, Culture Club was a musical staple in the 80’s. With hits like Time, Karma Chameleon and Do You Really Want to Hurt Me, it was not surprising to see the responses we were getting about people assuring us that they would be there to see him and the rest of the band live. The idea of performing together again wasn’t extremely new for the band. “We have been performing on and off for awhile now,” shared Boy George. “We would take breaks to work on our own projects then come together to perform at different gigs.” While Boy George love the experience of touring around the world there are 15 I

NME • September 2018

other in the band that don’t see it as glamorous. “Jon is not a fan. He can’t stand riding on the tour bus and doing all that. He can do without that part.” But when it comes down to it it’s the love of the fans that keep them going. “It’s wonderful to be on stage,” says George. “The roar of the crowd is electric. There’s nothing like it.” Culture Club formed back in 1981. The four men and the sound they wanted to create was one that took on a mind of its own, but it all meshed well together. “You know, I was goth,” remaninced George. “My musical influences were Siouxsie and the Banshees. But we also loved Marvin Gaye and music was changing from glam rock to punk rock, then electronic music. Soon I was asking myself when it came to what we were creating, ‘What is this noise?’ But we were creating this unique sound - Jon, Mickey, Roy and me - we were a potpourri of stuff we loved.” That love has given fans a discography of

hits. But even when fans might know what’s coming, the band still surprises them when it comes to their sets. “We always play the hits, but we also do cover and new songs. I sometime find myself stepping on stage and saying, ‘You don’t know what we’re going to do tonight.’ It makes for an entertaining concert.” So, for New Mexico fans who wonder whether they will play the hits, now you have your answer. The band has traveled the world performing their hits that span over a 30 year history. When the band started, they didn’t know where the road would take them, but as Boy George explained, he remembered when the band had that moment of accomplishment. “I could say it was the moment we landed in Canada for one of our first gigs and fans were screaming when we took the stage. Or it could have been Australia. I mean, who’s going to know us in Australia? But we still saw the some reaction. But I think the moment was when we played Madison Square Garden. That was the moment we stop being a club band and became a stadium band.” The band would go on to touring around the world supporting their albums including Kissing to be Clever and Colour by Numbers. The time on touring is something George looks back on and realizes that he was going to do things differently when it came to his personal time. “I realized that during the times we would tour and do shows that I wasn’t really taking time out for myself. People

16 I

NME • September 2018

were recognizing us and because of the way I dressed I immediately stood out. I know now that need to take those personal moments, like getting to your hotel room and realizing how comfortable the bed is. I realized that happiness is a choice and if I want to be grumpy, I can also be grumpy. Being 57, I now take the moments I didn’t take before.” Culture Club is currently on tour promoting their new album, Life. This is the band’s first new material in twenty year. The album will official drop on October 26th and pre-orders are available now at https://bgcc.lnk.to/LIFEPR. Of the show Boy George says, “We put together an amazing show that is going to be filled with hits and fabulous memories.”Even with the band’s original split in 1986, Culture Club continues to come together and bring the joy that many experience listening to their music. When Boy George thinks about career, both with his bandmates and solo, the thought of a legacy is a question that George was not ready to answer. “I hate this questions,” expressed George. “I was with Dolly Parton when a reporter asked that question and she handled it so well. I feel that I still working on that legacy, which is why I’m still doing tours and projects. Ask me again in 30 years.” If the first 30 years of their career is any reflection, it’s safe to say that he will be still be providing the world with more music 30 years to come. THE ART WORLD

uring our journey to the 50th anniversary of Bubonicon, we saw many wonders, but one particular artist stopped us in our tracks. Elizabeth Leggett’s work is stunning. A Hugo award-winning illustrator, Leggett give a realistic feel in a digital format. We took a moment to talk about her process.

You work with aluminum. How did you come across working with that medium?

It’s called dye sublimation. It’s a fascinating media. It shows what I print. Unlike - paper, it softens everything. The aluminum makes it crisp. You can see the detailed work. You steam the color onto the metal and it’s beautiful.

How long does the process take? It...depends on the piece.

How often do you participate in Bubonicon?

I think this is our fifth year. I was guest of honor last year and won two Hugos. This particular [con] has some of the best and finest in science fiction and fantasy. I mean, George R.R. Martin is going to be here...If this is where your heart is, this is the convention to be in.

How can people find out more about your artwork?

My web page is archwayportico.com. I’m terrible during con season at updating, but I will be putting new stuff and the new publications. NME - Teresa Robinson-Ewers

The Best of Albuquerque

SOMOS ABQ

t was another world in Downtown Albuquerque as SOMOS ABQ made their second annual appearance on August 25th. The bustling area was transformed into an artist wonderland, showcasing the best Albuquerque has to offer. Local businesses, organizations, musicians, artists and more gathered together to show the town the beauty within this state. We arrived at the event around 3:30 pm and was treated to a welcome spread before we took to the streets to explore. After walking through the white tent, we witnessed a wonderful display of creative art including streamers created with plastic bags, a giant handmade Lite-Brite, a television with flowers blooming, and street drains decorated with color. The music was plentiful - offering over four different stages: R&B, Rock, Pop, and Electro. Some of our favorite moments were the areas provided for kids. There was a cooking station provided by The Hyatt Downtown, a coloring table from Homewise and plenty of goats and ponies for the children to pet. One of the moments that stood out was AirDance

ArtSpace, a dance collective of aerialists and stilters. Witnessing one of the performers balance a lady with his feet and arms while laying on the ground was mesmerizing! SOMOS ABQ also provided other events leading up to the highly attended festival. Along with The City of Albuquerque, SOMOS hosted a comedy event called StANNEd Up for Albuquerque. Hosted by Lauren Poole, the beloved actor, and comedian who made Lynette a household name with “Shit Burquenos Say.” The event also featured special guest Anne Heche who was debuting her stand up act for the first time. We even had the opportunity to interview her after the show which ending in a dance-off. Only in Albuquerque. Local comics including Zach Abeyta, David Montoya, Matt Peterson, and Caitlin Minton to name a few also took to the stage making the event a successful evening. The organizers of this event have surpassed their expectations from last year. We look forward to 2019. NME - Teresa Ewers • Photo by M. West

SIGHTSEEING AUGUST WAS FULL OF EXCITEMENT! New Mexico Entertainment had the opportunity to attend the opening of Twist Nightclub in Downtown Albuquerque, catch Joel McHale show at The Stage at Santa Ana Star, and have some cartoon fun with our Morning Toons event at The Guild Cinema. We also took part in the 50th Anniversary of Bubonicon, explored SOMOS ABQ including an interview with Ann Heche for StANNEd Up for Albuquerque, and honored individuals in the LGBTQI community at Models of Hope.
