he National Hispanic Cultural Center is partnering with Camino Real Productions and Albuquerque drag theatre troupe The Dolls to open the NHCC’s 2015-2016 Siembra: Latino Theatre Season with Liz Coronado Castillo’s bilingual farce Aye, No!. The show opens on Thursday, July 30, running for three weekends in the Wells Fargo Auditorium with performances on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 7:30 pm and Sunday at 2 pm and 6 pm. In Aye, No!, Alicia, a Latina girl from a small town in Texas, goes off to college and falls in love with Cathy, an Anglo girl. As the play opens, Alicia is bringing Cathy home to introduce her to her abuelita and tías, who raised her. They, of course, think that the “friend” she is bringing is a boyfriend or fiancé. When they discover the truth, they are so horrified that they decide to find a curandero to cure her of “the gay.” But each of the lesbian and gay characters in the story has a drag queen fairy godmother to help out, and when the fairy godmothers recruit a

friend to pretend to be a curandero, hilarity ensues. Producer Linda López McAlister says, “I wanted to produce this play because it’s rare to see a fun, positive coming-out story on stage, especially one about a Hispanic family, and even in 2015, coming out to one’s traditional family can be hard to do.” In order to enable local LGBTQ young people to see the show, López McAlister launched a crowd-funding campaign to raise money to offer free tickets through several organizations serving LGBTQ youth in Albuquerque, including Teen N'Mpower, the New Mexico GSA Network, the New Mexico Youth Alliance, Common Bond U21, Young Women United, the University of New Mexico's LGBTQ Resource Center, and Casa Q. Tickets are $18 with a $3 discount for seniors and students, and are available from the NHCC Box Office, at (505) 724-4771, or at www.nhccnm.org.

ime to Get Down with the BLUES! Once in awhile everyone gets the blues, but on July 18th Aztec, New Mexico will have the Blues all day long. We're talkin' down home, soul rockin', gut clenchin' Blues Music. When you think of great live blues music most people will conjure up visions of Chicago or the Mississippi Delta area but no longer are those boundaries exclusive. Aztec, a small town with a big love for live music, has been the host city for the Animas River Blues & Brews Fest for the past nine years. Take a look at this year’s performers:
Harlis Sweetwater Band
(Huntington Beach, California) Harlis Sweetwater, as a singer /guitarist/ songwriter and frontman, has shared the stage with everyone from Jimmie Vaughan, ZZ Top, Los Lobos Robert Randolph & the Family Band, Everlast, and Brian Setzer to R&B/Blues legends Etta James, James Cotton, and Wilson Pickett to name a few.

Kelly Richey (Ohio)
Kelly Richey has been described as “Stevie Ray Vaughan trapped in a woman’s body with Janis Joplin screaming to get out.” Kelly matches her gifted technique with a passion for music that borders on being possessed. Her powerful guitar chops capture audiences with blisteringly precise guitar leads. Kelly has shared the stage with such legends as Albert King, Lonnie Mack, Julie Wolf, and Sara Lee (from the B-52’s). She has opened for Robben Ford, Joe Cocker, Johnny Winter, Edgar Winter, Walter Trout, Little Feat, Foghat, REO Speedwagon, George Thorogood, Average White Band, Warren Zevon, and James Brown. Kelly has perfected her unique style over years of touring and on 15 albums. Kelly’s stadium-worthy alto and the intensity of her playing has made her an award-winning musician’s musician–and one of the best blues guitarists making music today.
The Michael Lee Band (Texas)
Michael Lee was born and raised in Bedford, Texas where he grew up appreciating music and was always drawn to the style of music heard in his childhood home. Michael started formal music training in junior high where he joined the band and played alto sax. Michael continued to play saxophone through high school, but also picked up the guitar and began to teach himself in the styles of Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Clapton, BB King, Buddy Guy, and many other classic rock and

blues artist. Michael began honing his skills by playing many of the area clubs. Michael has played with many notable musicians such as Buddy Whittington, Holland K Smith, Jackie Don Loe, Rusty Burns, Joe Jonas, Mouse Mayes, Hash Brown, Blue Lisa, Voodoo Blue and Chris Watson to name a few. Michae's love of the Blues started early with the music of his parents. "I recall being pulled out of Pre-School to go see BB King in concert. There was some headliner that at the time I didn't know but knew BB King was the man and I was so thrilled to see the king." Michael picked up the guitar and saxophone at the same time when he was 12 years old. He learned to play by ear with the guitar and read the charts with the saxophone. Getting a large dose of music everywhere he turned from the local music scene. Michael decided he had to learn to sing and start his own solo band. In April of 2014 Michael released his debut self titled album "Michael Lee". This album is a "Record" as he likes to put it. "It's a record and it's exactly that! A record in time of everything I have ever done up until this point. It sums me up in 11 songs.” This album is all original music written by Michael, and it is a peek into the man's soul.
Bill “HOWL-NMADD” Perry (Mississippi)
Born in 1947, Abbeville, Mississippi's Bill "HowlN-Madd" Perry has been playing blues, soul and gospel for over 3 decades. Through the years, his path has crossed with many musical legends, including Willie Dixon, Bobby "Blue" Bland, Johnny Taylor, Little Milton, Chuck Berry, Buddy Guy and more. As a young man, he received July 2015

informal blues training from legends like Sonny Thompson (who wrote many Freddy King hits) and Cash McCall, and his musical career since then has taken him all over the U.S. and overseas. He's been featured on both TV and radio, and he currently hosts the "Blues Trekkers" weekly blues TV show in Oxford, MS. Perry’s band includes his daughter Sharo and his son Bill Jr. who are each noted on the Mississippi Blues Highway marker in Oxford. The band generally comprises from five to seven talented musicians. The band performs a fun Juke Joint style music which keeps most people on the dance floor. "I've been doing this for a long time. Hopefully, it shows. I'm just playing the blues I love. When the audience starts smiling and dancing, then I know I've got ‘em!" Bill’s show is mostly original songs with some of the favorite cover songs included. His most recent CD The Clarksdale Sessions (produced by Grammy nominated Gary Vincent at The Clarksdale Soundstage) features songs which take Bill Howl-N-Madd Perry into new territory musically. His songs Saturday Night, Delta Women, and Reason to Believe as well as others on the CD are already becoming big hits with the fans.
The Austin Young Band (Colorado)
Austin Lee Young, a Colorado n a t i v e , picked up his first guitar at age 12 and hasn’t put it down since. Self taught, he displays his music in each and every performance with electrifying passion! He engages his audience on a level that can match any seasoned performer who currently draws large crowds and leaves everything on the stage! His inspirations run the gauntlet of

the Blues from historical giants such as Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters and Howlin Wolf to contemporary masters like Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton and Stevie Ray Vaughan and applauding modern day guitarists, Dereck Trucks and Joe Bonamassa. Although you would expect a young artist to rely heavily on an array of music covers, Austin has self produced two albums to date and performs much of his original material at live shows. His repertoire of musical composition is varied but he always keeps the blues basics entrenched within every song. His stage presence and the relationship that he builds with his audience leaves all with extreme appreciation for music and a feeling of anticipation for the “next time”! Austin Young and his band perform locally and nationally in established music clubs, numerous festivals, private functions and special events. He incorporates the sheer honesty of the blues and performs it with a modern, high energy sound that remains faithful to its traditional roots. hen it comes to her philosophy, Chef Susan Herrmann Loomis looks to French cooking - the closer food is raised to where it is cooked, the better it will taste. Loomis cooks locally and seasonally, putting her philosophy into action daily, cooking with the finest ingredients produced on farms within twenty minutes of her gorgeous kitchen. As an internationally-recognized expert on food and an award-winning journalist/author, Loomis take a unique approach by combining training in journalism with a love for food and the people who produce it. An award winning author of nine books both food and literary, the most recent of which is Nuts in the Kitchen, Loomis’ extensive travel throughout the United States, France, Italy, the Middle East and parts of Asia has given her a depth of knowledge and an appreciation for the rich traditions around food—how it is grown, harvested, and prepared. Loomis will be partnering with The Artichoke Cafe for one extraordinary night of dinner in celebration of her latest book, In A French Kitchen. Loomis took some time to sit down with me and discuss where her love of food came from and what inspires her in the kitchen. You have a real passion for French cuisine. Where did it come from? I was a cooking apprentice in France, and I fell under the spell of French cuisine then. That was more than 25 years ago. With all the travels under your belt, which city do you draw your influence from? Paris; Marseilles; Toulouse; Rome; Florence…there are so many! Have your children caught the cooking bug? No, but they have discriminating palates.

We’re excited to have you visit Albuquerque. What can we expect during this dinner and book signing on July 26th? I'm very excited to be in Albuquerque! You can expect to learn some culinary tips and tricks and here a few French stories, and taste some wonderful examples of the recipes from In a French Kitchen. And even more than all of that, you can expect to have a wonderful time, and walk away with a signed copy of In a French Kitchen! Which all the dishes you’ve created and learned to cook, what would you say is your favorite? Oh dear. My signature dessert is Tarte Tatin; but everything I make is my favorite thing! Or, I should say that whatever it is I've just eaten in my favorite thing! You also teach classes. What is the experience like for inspiring chefs? My students say they are surprised at how much they learn about techniques and ingredients, flavor combinations and how to enjoy time at the table, French culture and cuisine. We have a lot of fun, we spend a lot of time cooking, tasting, and enjoying the meals we've made. What is the one lesson you want your students to walk away with? That food and eating are all about pleasure. What would you like your legacy to be? If I have a legacy, I would hope it to be that I've done my part to help the family farmer stay on the farm and lead a good life there. - Teresa Ewers

H
omegrown, William Bolt has an interesting take on the world, thanks to his Santa Fean upbringing and living aboard. Soft spoken, he is not someone you would expect to be a comedian, especialyl when his day job is substitute teaching or selling vintage video games. From a young age William enjoyed making people think and laugh. It was never about the easy jokes, but, he never considered it a possible career until he moved to Tokyo, Japan. There, a friend convinced him to try an English speaking open mic night. The first time he went he showed up about thirty minutes early only to find it was full. The next week he showed up and hour early, full again. The third week he showed up ninety minutes early and managed to go on at 11:00pm that night. English speaking comedy was a major event in Japan at that time. “There was a girl there who looked like she walked out of ‘Mad Max’ who was heckling everyone. She of course was one of the few people who stayed for my set. She didn’t say a word during my time and then came up to me and told me I was funny.” Motivation comes from strange place in
the stand-up world. From that scene, William moved to San Francisco where he try to break up a fight one night and was knocked for his involvement. That ended his comedy dreams for a while. His eye and jaw were damaged in the altercation. Eventually William found his way back to Albuquerque and to the stage. A self-aware man child who still eats peanut butter on crackers and calls it a meal, William is a paid substitute teacher for APS and avid video-gamer in his free time. You may even catch him around town with a camera doing some freelance photography. But in the evening you’ll find him at local mic nights around town to hone his skills. “Open mics are like going to the gym.” Stand-up, Improv, or dentist commercials you are sure to see this talent guy around Albuquerque. He offers one piece of advice for anyone aspiring to make a career in the arts here in town, “If you don’t like somebody say no if they offer you work. Don’t lose your integrity.” Sound advice. NOW SHOWING: KUNG FURY, OR, HOW I LEARNED TO LOVE THE 80S IN LESS THAN 30 MINUTES
So, the 80’s. There are a lot of fuckers out there that have this kind of weird fetish with the 80’s that borders on the kind of “Stab you in the back alley because no one else can have you” kind of fetish. They look back fondly at things like polyester, parachute pants, big hair, Reganomics and it leaves them so moist they could irrigate 7 fields of avocados. Personally I don’t get it at all. There was some great movies and television that came out of that time period, but just about every decade has at least some redeeming factors in that area, but other than that the 80’s really didn’t have anything going for it. So why the hell do I like “80’s Action Revival” film Kung Fury so much? So I know some of you out there may be saying “What the fuck is ‘Kung Fury?”, others might be saying “Didn’t that come out a couple of years ago?”, and yet others might be saying “how did I get here when I was searching for midget porn?”. Well I can help with the first two questions, you’re on your own for the third, I clear my browser consistently. The trailer for a proposed “Most 80’s Movie Ever” first surfaced in 2013 along with a Kickstarter campaign to get the movie itself made. The trailer and movie are the brain child of Swedish filmmaker David Sandberg who left his job of directing commercials and music videos to pursue his dream of Kung Fury. After the Kickstarter pulled in $650,000 (a good chunk more than the $200,000 asked, but not enough to expand the movie over a 30-minute run time) Sandberg got to going on production. Well, when you compare it to other crowdfunded movies it turned out pretty damn well, but the bar was set low (I’m looking at you Iron Sky). If you liked the trailer you are 16

going to like the movie, because the movie pretty much follows the trailer but adds a few more gags in between. The added gags are kind of hit or miss depending on your point of view, but while you may not like some, others will think they are great. For example, I didn’t care for the “Bad VHS Tape” effects that were added to give it an 80’s video tape feel, but I know someone else who thought those were great. My favorite new gag was the “That is not an Aryan mustache” joke but I know someone else who hated it because they thought it ruined the timing of that scene. One thing is for sure that I don’t think anyone is going to deny, the special effects were lovingly crafted and used well to hide the fact that this was still a very low budget production. It added a new level to the movie for me because it made the movie feel like someone took a modern video game and made it play like a 80’s side scroller. Yes I know the main reason for this was because they only had a couple of uniforms for the bad guys so they had to matte each extra in individually as Sandberg did fighting moves on a green screen, but it was wonderful and creative. One thing that is missing, though, is a cohesive story of any kind. It pretty much throws as many over the top gags and story points at you as it can in 30 minutes, many of which are mashups of 80’s movie tropes (as expected). The thing is that it doesn’t matter, what matters is that it entertains the shit out of you for 30 minutes and doesn’t apologize for anything while doing so. ew Mexico Women In Film is celebrating ten years with Film Fiesta. This non-profit chapter of Women In Film supports local women and men in the film industry at any levels and in all jobs including students. The organization strives to keep its members current on new developments in the film industry. July 10-12 NMWIF will be showcasing films from past and present members on a tri-city tour of New Mexico. In order for this event to happen NMWIF sent out a call to all past and present members to submit their Documentaries, Narrative, Experimental, Music Video, Animation, Webisodes, and Commercial/Corporate. “We had 49 films submitted, which totaled over 14 hours. The Board of Directors agreed to keep the Fiesta at 6 hours. We created a Screening Committee of six NMWIF Members.”Shelene Bridge, film editor. After NMWIF was able to choose the top 17 entries they then sent them to judges in the film industry outside NMWIF to make the final cut. The six hours of top films will be on tour in Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and Las Cruces. For the low ticker price of $15 you can spend the day watching the best of the best in an airconditioned theater in the town of your choice. NMWIF does more then bring a film fiesta to town every ten years. They have bi-monthly meetings in Santa Fe and Albuquerque to share knowledge and help the community stay in touch with one another. Every year NMWIF hold a fundraiser that turns into scholarships
for its members to help them pay for a project or further education. The Athena Award is given to excellence in short screenplay writing, anyone can enter. The winner will receive $1,000 and a professional table read of their script. “Final Judge, British screenwriter, Dr Helen Jacey, commented that Bequest is 'layered, developed, complex, intense and psychologically astute...altogether brilliant!' “NMWIF is under the umbrella of the international Women and Film organization. itchy Woman sounds like a sexist, or at least sexy, Pagan murder mystery under a full moon. Not at all sexist, with just a touch of sexy steeped in murder, this is a mystery for anyone looking for some entertainment. We are back in Albuquerque with our down, but not quite out, private Dick Bubba Marby. He’s back on the case to prove to his long time girlfriend, and her soon to arrive parents, he's the guy she needs. The story opens with him running out of quarters and on his way to counting nickels in his fleabag motel on Route 66. The phone rings and he is offered a job by a beautiful woman he can’t refuse. Let her insecure little hubby kick his butt for a fast 300 bucks to make him feel like a man. Easy as pie right? What could go wrong for the lovable detective? Nothing - Life gets better with a phone call from the "Goddess" the following day! She is the owner of the 18

Albuquerque newspaper. She offers him a fat cash retainer to go to Taos and fetch her granddaughter from an all-women ranch. Vacation time? Not for Bubba, everything from rubber snakes to dead bodies fall at his feet in the small mountain town. The sheriff is convinced Bubba brought trouble to his quaint little town. Written iwith a quick pace, and an even quicker wit, Witchy Woman was the perfect book for my 28-hour train. I empathized with the characters and laughed out loud while reading. The only problem, I finished the book long before I got to my destination and had to download another Steve Brewer and Bubba adventure at the next stop when I had a Wi-Fi signal. Start anywhere in the series you like, but you will end up going back and reading all of Bubba mishaps and murder-solving adventures before all is said and done. - Winter Flack
THE ART WORLD: CHRISTINA MARTINEZ
Native New Mexican, Christina Martinez, embodies New Mexico art by being multi-talented and hands-on. Painting, jewelry-making, and handmade products are just of few of the talents this amazing woman has. From a very young age, Christina loved to draw and color, attempting oil painting for the first time at 10. It took her years to go back to oils, but she worked with charcoals and pastel instead. Growing up in Abiquiu, the home of Georgia O’Keefe and Ghost Ranch, art flowed through Christina’s veins. If location isn’t enough, Christina hails from a talented family, learning crochet from her grandmother and embroidering from her mother. Throughout her formative years and college, Christina took a many art workshops looking for her own niche. Jewelry-making screamed her name and she never looked back. “I’ve dabbled in several jewelry techniques and processes, but I mainly stick to fabrication and accent with Mokume Gane and gold.” Mokune
Gane is easily one of the most difficult and time-consuming techniques, but one of her favorites. Sterling silver is her favorite working metal, but when using Mokume Gane technique she mixes it with Cooper create beautiful designs. She is still pleasantly surprised by some of the designs she creates. “My inspiration has always come from everything around me. Growing up in Abiquiu, in Northern New Mexico, it’s difficult not to be inspired!” If you have never experienced the beauty of Abiquiu, try checking out the studio tour this fall. The action takes place in a small Texas border town when young Alicia comes home from college with a "friend" for her family to meet. The trouble begins when
her loving grandma and well-intentioned aunts assume that Alicia is bringing home a boyfriend or fianc , rather than her girlfriend. Alicia, wanting her family’s acceptance and fearing their efforts to get a curandera to cure her of "the gay," turns to her three fairy (drag queen) godmothers for assistance.
