T
he idea of a greatest hits album for an artist comes after years upon years of cataloged work. With 3 Doors Down's announcement of releasing a greatest hits album, many may have thought that it was too early in their career to promote something like this. But we forget, 3 Doors Down has over a 12 year musical catalog of some of the greatest hits to hit the Billboard charts. Originated in Mississippi, 3 Down Down was formed in 1996. The band originally consisted of Brad Arnold, Todd Harrell, and Matt Roberts. Chris Henderson came on board in the early conception of their first album The Better Life, releasing the album as a four piece band. After their successful album Away From the Sun, the band brought on drummer Greg Upchurch full time. They suffered with the lost of bandmate Matt Roberts, due to his poor health, which lead to the inclusion of Chet Roberts as their new guitarist. After five albums and a string of hits including Kyptonite, When I'm Gone, and Here Without You, they are ready to create the greatest hits compilation that shows their work in the best light. Lead singer, Brad Arnold, felt that the time was right. They felt like it was a good time to do it and they have the songs to do it. There are new songs that were created just for this album, one of those songs is called There is a Life, which was suppose to be on the last album, but didn't see the light of day until now. They are currently on their Songs from the Basement acoustic tour, which is making a stop in Albuquerque at the Isleta Amphitheater on January 24th. With their continued success and charity work through their Better Life Foundation, 3 Doors Down will continue to be a staple in the rock music community.

THE ART WORLD: THE AUX AUX DOG THEATER THEATER by by Teresa eresa Ew Ew ers
2014 means new productions and an expansion are in the future for the Auxiliary Dog Theater, lovingly known as The Aux Dog. Vicki Liberatori, Producing Artistic Director of the theater, took a moment to sit down with New Mexico Entertainment and discuss what makes the Aux Dog different and what else they have in store for the community. When was Aux Dog created? Aux Dog Theatre was founded seven years ago by Eli Browning. I became the Artistic Director in 2011 and subsequently, the Producing Artistic Director in late 2012. What do you feel makes you different from other theaters? We operate under a Producing Artistic Director and this model departs a bit from most Albuquerque theatres. The Artistic Director chooses the plays, the directors and is heavily involved in the casting and overall interpretation of the script. So, the theatre is run with a cohesive vision that emanates to a large extent from

the choices of the Artistic Director, who is involved in all productions from script to stage. Also, as the Artistic Director, I am assembling a company of highly talented and diverse actors who will inform my play choices. I am committed to this model and believe without a doubt that it produces the best theatre. Tell us a little bit about the X Gallery. How did that come about? The X Gallery was revived when I took over from Eli. He had done several shows, but chose not to continue. I think of the walls here at the Aux Dog as real estate for our local artists and we're thrilled to display their work and we hope they realize sales and recognition from their shows. One of our most successful shows here was the Instagram Photo exhibit by Annie Jones Francis. Our audiences loved her work and she sold very well. Actually prior to the conversion over seven years ago to the Aux Dog Theatre, this location was a prestigious gallery called the Dartmouth Gallery. People still ask about it.

Your latest show is Little Show of Horrors, tell us a little bit about what we plan to see. Little Shop of Horrors is a delirious spook of 1950s sci-fi B movies. The music is infectious with its classic Motown rock and roll score and unforgettable characters - Seymour, Audrey, Mr. Mushnik and the insane dentist, Orin Scrivello - made famous in the movie version by Steve Martin! Certainly, last, but not least, the incredible and horribly expensive puppets that appear in the show as Audrey Two, the "mean green mother from outer space" that craves human blood! It's a comedy, a love story, a space invasion and a cult classic! What plans do we have to look forward to in 2014? Well, after an amazing 2013 in which the Aux Dog Theatre Nob Hill was voted One of the Top 5 Venues to see Theatre in Albuquerque by Albuquerque The Magazine and just this past Sunday, The Albuquerque
Journal chose our production of Venus in Fur as The Best Production in 2013, we have a great springboard to launch into our 2014 season. We start with a terrific production of Little Shop of Horrors, then in February we open the Southwest premiere of the Pulitzer finalist comedy/drama, Rapture, Blister, Burn by Gina Gionfriddo and then in March, we are doing the Western premiere of a new adaptation of James Joyce's Ulysses called Gibraltar by Irish playwright, Patrick Fitzgerald. Gibraltar will also be a part of the Southwest Irish Theatre Festival. Then The Dolls return with their Spring extravaganza, then in June we present 'night Mother by Marsha Norman, Winner of the 1983 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. All of this and over 25 outside tours, Rocky Horror New Mexico on their monthly schedule, Comedy Sketch groups and classes offered in our new space--the Aux Box. Oh, lest, I forget, we’re renovating and expanding into a new space in 2015!

MAKE ‘EM LAUGH: BILL BURR By Teresa Ewers
D
o you remember your first gig? Describe the scene.
I signed up for a talent contest at Nick’s Comedy Stop in Boston, Massachusetts. It was a college show, so the crowd was young. I only had to do 5 minutes. When I got on stage I forgot everything that I was going to say, so I just started talking until I remembered the joke I was going to end with. I kind of meandered for about 3 minutes, made fun of the host and then I got off stage. It didn’t go great, but it didn’t go bad either. Been doing it ever since. I'm sure there are comedians out there who see you as a inspiration for their careers. Who were your inspirations when you started? Too many to list, but I’ll do my best. Pryor, Cosby, Carlin, Kinison, Foster Brooks, Seinfeld, Dice and about 2 dozen more. Have you made a heckler cry? Who was your worst heckler? I never made heckler cry, but I saw the late-great Patrice O’Neal do it like three times and I loved every second of it. My worst hecklers were people who heckled
“They should expect a LEGEND. Unfortunately they are going to get me.” me early in my career. Those hurt the most because I wasn’t sure if I was funny yet, so their comments went to the bone. After I got funny, all the other heckles just felt like part of the job. Breaking Bad has become a household name. How did you like your experience on the show? I watched Breaking Bad the very first night it aired and I was hooked. I immediately began harassing my agent to get me on the show. It took three seasons before he convinced Vince Gilligan to give me a shot. Thank God it worked out because it was the coolest thing I ever got to do in this business. I owe Vince and everyone else on that show. It’s the best material I’ve ever got to perform and being on set was every bit as awesome as I’d hoped it would be. It still feels more like a dream than something that actually happened.
What is the process when creating your stand-up routines? I see something, think something, or hear something that seems interesting to me and then I talk about it on stage. On the good nights, the crowd thinks it’s interesting too. On the bad nights, they just stare at me. What should the audience expect with your show at the Legends Theater? They should expect a LEGEND. Unfortunately they are going to get me. A bit of advice for inspiring comedians? Write five minutes of stuff you think is funny. Sign up for an open mic and when they call your name, walk onto the stage. Don’t judge yourself for the first 12-15 shows. Your first shows are all about having the guts to go up on stage when you hear your name. After you get your feet wet, just have fun try-
ing out anything that you ever thought was funny. Don’t be a dick to other comics and don’t hang out with comics that are negative. Just do your thing and watch other comics or artists that inspire you to develop your talents further. Always push yourself and your abilities. It’s just like playing a sport. If you can’t go to the left, work on that part of your game. Turn it into a strength. Now you have another tool that can take all of you jokes to a new level. H a v e fun!

Y
ou may not know his name or recognize his face, but you do know him by the music he plays. Have you ever wonder who writes those unforgettable soundtracks to the movies and television shows you can’t live without? Well, then let us tell you a little story, of those ear popping tunes you can’t get them out of your head, leading you to turn up the stereo. Across the pond in a town call Birmingham, in a land called England, Gerard McMann, also known as G Tom Mac, was born into the world. Like all good British lads of his time, he listened to The Beatles, Stevie Wonder and David Bowie. He was glued to the BBC listening for the latest sound hittlng the airwaves. "I was inspired by various pop and R&B artists at an early age." At the impressionable age of 11, McMann's family moved across the great ocean to the USA. They stayed in New York for only a short time before settling in Wichita, Kansas - the breadbasket of America. Here McMann took a serious interest in music, learning
to play multiple instruments. "When I was there, I started learning guitar and the bass and realizing I had a voice. I started a band which played in clubs all over the Midwest." Farm life in the flat Midwest didn’t suit the free spirit, so he packed up his bags a few years later and moved to Boulder, CO. He took a job at the university by day and put a band together by night. The Strangers stayed together long enough to record one song before disbanding. The call of the Big Apple was too much for McMann to resist, so he returned to New York in 1971 to pursue a career in the preforming arts. It wasn’t long until he began a working as a session musician. With his gift of playing multiple instruments and a knack for studio mixing, he quickly made a name for himself. After working in studio sessions, in both New York and Los Angeles, backing up fellow artist, Mac decided he wanted to promote his own solo career. He returned to Colorado and formed a band called Gerard. The band Gerard released two January 2014

albums in the mid 70’s, having local commercial success but never getting the national recognition many thought the band deserved. It disbanded shortly after the second album. This was Mac first taste of the finicky music industry. He returned to working on other musical projects. Mac returned to Los Angeles and began writing and recording music for movie soundtracks. He worked for many of the major studios and quite a few great directors. Out of this time came his first hit song, Cry Little Sister, for the now cult classic movie Lost Boys. He was also featured in movies such as Fast Times At Ridgemont High, Spring Break, Chasing Amy, The Banger Sisters and All The Right Moves. By the time Lost Boys was released Mac had stopped touring. Fed up with the music industry from the many years of abuse, he changed his name to the G Tom Mac who is around today. 14

Mac continued to write for some of music's biggest acts including Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin and Roger Daltery of The Who. He has also work with contemporary Hip-Hop artist Ice Cube and Digable Planets. Last year Mac earned a Grammy for Eminem’s album Recovery. Eminem sampled him in the song You’re Not Over. Today, shows like The Vampire Diaries and Big Bang Theory are still licensing his work. Mac said, “Staying fresh and being true to my fans in creating music that they feel from me. That’s my thrill!” With over 25 million YouTube plays & 6 album releases, G Tom Mac opens yet another chapter with his new album Untame the Songs, garnering stellar reviews and labeled as one of the best albums of the year. here are some who think throwing a large comic expo is a piece of cake, but then leave us with a lukewarm experience. Then there are those who know how to do it right. Tina Presley Borek, Director of Marketing for Albuquerque Comic Con, took some time out of her crazy schedule to give us the low down on this year's event. This is ACC's 6th year in existence. How did the convention come to existence? What's the history? Actually 4th year, our sixth Convention which includes two Genre shows, yes, 4th year for our January show ACC. Jim Burleson is the mastermind behind the scenes with his

experience as a promoter for King of The Cage and many other New Mexico based events, his expertise is invaluable at putting the pieces of the puzzle together. In January of 2011, Albuquerque Comic Con became the first Albuquerque comic convention in nearly 20 years. Each year we have grown in quality, number of guests, and attendance. We strive to continue to grow every year to be a better partner for vendors, better outlet for fans, and a better friend to guests from comic books, film, TV, and other entertainment. When planning, how do you decide who will take part? I have to say, this is a dream come true
to be a part of the process. It is a culmination of fan favorites suggested on our website, friends we have met through the years on films locally (our Director Jim Burleson is an actor and film producer as well), and personal favorites. We are already gearing up for 2015, as you can imagine a years worth of planning goes into an event this size. We anticipate 15,000 to attend this year. It is much like an orchestra to combine music, Cosplay, artists and media talent for an event of this proportion. He usually lets me choose a guest or two that were childhood favorites. We try to bring talent that will please every fan, from such hit shows and movies as Buck Rogers, Star Wars, Star Trek and wrestling (WWF/WWE). What do you feel the Albuquerque Comic Con is offering New Mexico that you don't see anywhere else? I've been with the show since the beginning and along with the tremendous support we give to local charities, We pride ourselves in trying to create a family event in a friendly environment that pleases all ages. We truly have so much to offer that we have added two days to our schedule to fit it in. What I love about ACC is the Inclusive Hotel feel. We are at Hotel Albuquerque this year, in the heart of Old Town, which means we will have Breaking Bad location tours running all weekend along with ghost tours as well.
What are the sights and sounds for this year's convention? Some things you can expect are Panels where you get to ask questions of your celebrity favorites, including George Perez, Gil Gerrard (Buck Rogers) AZ Power Girl (professional cosplayer), Bruce Logan (Star Wars) Ray Park (Darth Maul) John Morrison (Johnny Nitro WWE) Greg The Hammer Valentine (WWF), Brutus the Bar Beefcake (WWF), Red Green and Pink Power Rangers, and so many more. Please check our website for a complete list of invited guests attending this year. What are your goals for these upcoming years? Our goal is to bring the best of the Comic community to Albuquerque. These shows are more than entertainment to us, they are like family reunions, and we look forward to providing an exciting experience for years to come.

NOW SHOWING: THE WORLD’S END By Adrian Luna
N
ew to blu ray and DVD comes the final installment of the unofficial Edgar Wright / Simon Pegg "Blood and Ice Cream" trilogy, The Worlds End. In this story we find our protagonist Gary King (Pegg). A forty-something aging burnout trying to recapture his youth by trying to relive a failed attempt at a local drinking game known only as "The Golden Mile". A twelve pub, twelve pint romp through the streets of his former hometown of Newton Haven. With the help of his former classmates Andy, Steven, Peter and Oliver. They set out on their epic journey to repeat the events of June 22, 1990, but only this time they must succeed. Along the trek of self discovery, old skeletons in the closet once again rear their ugly faces and cause tension between the life-long friends.

Needing time for himself, Gary excuses himself to go to the loo. While doing his business Gary tries to start up a conversation with another fellow drinker. Gary’s words go unheard and causes him to get irritable and he starts a fight with the young man. Needless to say, Gary and the speechless college kid proceed to knock the living snot out of each other. With Gary delivering a swift body slam, the kid’s head hits a urinal and breaks off. It is soon revealed that the young man is not a young man at all. He's a part of a larger group of alien robots sent to earth to assimilate and enslave the human race. Now a night of
irresponsible drinking and debauchery turns into a comedic fight for survival. I started watching this movie with the expectations of having another hilarious laugh fest from beginning to end as I did during Shaun of the Dead. This my friends did not happen. Instead, I found myself laughing at a few of the running Wright/Pegg jokes that appear in their films and wondering how in the world does everyone in England know Kung Fu?! On the bright side, I was actually pleasantly surprised by the somewhat eerie nature and dark overtone of the movie. I thoroughly enjoyed the serious aspect of the film. On a scale of comedic value, I feel the movies appear in proper visual order. Shaun of the Dead (Funny), Hot Fuzz (Funny/Serious) and The Worlds End (Serious/Funny). Given the writing history between
Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg, they have great chemistry together and it is blatantly obvious in their scripts for TV and film. Continuing in the tradition of old slapstick comedy and sight gags, Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg once again follow through with an enjoyable movie that I can watch again and again. I recommend this movie to those people who want to relive their glory days, rock and roll all night and party everyday. But with a stiff warning, I do not suggest you consume twelve pints while watching this movie. This is why I'm giving The Worlds End three and a half out of five fingers.
