TURN IT UP!: THE PIXIES By Teresa Ewers
W
hen news got out that the legendary Pixies were gracing their presence at Kiva Auditorium, you could hear the speed of keyboard strokes ordering tickets for this amazing opportunity. The Pixies, an over 25 year old band, will be touring their latest work, including Bagboy, the band's first new song in nine years, on a world tour. This tour will be the band's first tour in nearly two years. For this tour, which will feature a brand new stage set and production, the Pixies - Black Francis guitar/vocals, Joey Santiago - guitars/backing vocals, and David Lovering - drums/backing vocals - will be joined by bassist Kim Shattuck. Shattuck played bass for the all-girl L.A. garage rock band The Pandoras,

and then was the guitarist for the pop punk band The Muffs. The four have been holed up in an L.A. rehearsal space getting ready to offer the most wide-ranging concert set-lists of Pixies music in the band's career. Fans are excited and waiting on pins and needles for them to pass through their town and Albuquerque is ready for their performance. "Along with everyone's favorites, we'll be playing songs that we haven't played in ages or never played live before," said Black Francis. "Songs like 'Brick is Red,' 'Havalina,' 'Tony's Theme.' and 'Sad Punk.' We've probably rehearsed some 80 songs, so we'll be able to change up the set at the last minute if we feel like it. We're all really looking forward to this tour."
THE ART WORLD: RAINBOW STUDIO THEATER by Teresa Ewers

ainbow Studio Theater, New Mexico's only professional African American theater company is taking a 1975 Broadway classic and creating the hottest ticket in town during Black History Month. They will be performing The WIZ and it will be the flagship event for the 3rd Annual New Mexico Black History Month Festival. The WIZ is a musical written by Charlie Smalls and William F. Brown. The story is a retelling of L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz in the context of African-American culture. The 1975 Broadway production won seven Tony Awards including Best Musical. "We chose the WIZ this year is that we wanted a show that had a fairly large cast that could be multigenerational, multiracial, Afrocentric, fun and different here in the Q," says Cathryn McGill, Producer of this year's show. "To my knowledge The WIZ has never been done here before and if it has, certainly not with a primarily African American cast. We
wanted to feature some of the amazing talent that exists here and develop new talents to present to the community. In fact, that is always our goal." The importance of this production during this time of year speaks largely for Rainbow Studio Theater. "If you look around there are precious few productions that deal with African American culture in this state and I think that is something that it is up to us to address. We're doing it as a part of the Arts and Culture Weekend in order to highlight that we are here and doing good work and we want it to serve as a springboard for other projects and to establish and strengthen the African American mark in the cultural landscape of New Mexico." The WIZ will be showing on February 7th-9th at the African American Performing Arts Center with School and Senior performances February 5th-7th. MAKE ‘EM LAUGH: STEPHEN SMITH By Winter Flack
O
n a chilly Saturday night in Albuquerque, I head out to a comedy show. Being that Albuquerque’s only comedy club closed years ago, I’m not sure what to expect. Will there be nice tables and drink minimums or smoke filled rooms? I find when I get there a small bar in the front of Sandia Bowl. The room is dimly lit and should be smoke filled, but it isn’t. In the far corner from the bar, there is a single spotlight shining on a corner with a small PA system. Tonight, there will be a number of comedians preforming tonight. My interest is in the headliner, Stephen “Smitty” Smith. An ex-air force man, Stephen began his career in comedy entertaining his friends and co-workers in Iraq. After a long difficult deployment to the middle-east, Stephen returned to New Mexico without giving comedy another thought. Luckily, his wife at the time had given it another thought and signed him up for a comedy competition here in Albuquerque. With no idea that he was headed to a competition, Stephen took his first baby steps into professional comedy. Coming in third was a boost to the comedian fighting his way out. Stephen credits the close-knit comedy community in being so welcoming and helpful to him in the beginning. In his first performance, two of the seasoned comedians took him out for a late night dinner and gave him a laundry list of open mic nights and hints for making it in comedy. This turned out to be the second best advice that Stephen had received in his life so far. Growing up in Riverdale, Georgia, Stephen raised his younger brother and sister while he was in high school. The responsibility kept the young man on the straight and narrow, until he moved out on his own. He adopted a partying lifestyle soon after getting out into the

real world. Trouble followed him around, until a police officer told him, “Get the hell out of Georgia or you will spend the rest of your life in jail.” Stephen took the suggestion to heart. Being a broke teenage with no prospect for college at the time, he joined the Air Force, where he was sent off to New Mexico to start a new period of his life. Like the lives of many stand-up comics before him, Stephen’s life was full of ups and downs. From PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder), from going to war in Iraq, to his marriage dissolving due to issue resulting from his condition. During this time, he was going it alone, trying to control his symptoms. In the end, he ended up leaving the Air Force, being jobless and almost homeless. He got help for his PTSD and decided he would go full force into the world of stand-up comedy. Stephen has been headlining all over town with his eye on The Stage, which has introduced a Thursday Comedy Night at Santa Ana Star Casino. He is also planning a Southwest comedy tour with a few of his close friends in the industry for the summer. When asked what he would say to young talent starting out, he has two pieces of advice. "First own your jokes," he says. "No matter how rude or crude or proper. Own, believe, and hang on to it, even if it bombs the first second or third time you deliver it. Keep it written down. You never know when it will work with your crowd. Second, hone your skill at open MIC nights. Here in Albuquerque, you can find one at Nexus Brewery on Tuesday nights at 7:30 or Broken Bottle Brewery on the Westside on Wednesday nights at 7:30. You will see new and seasoned comics alike working on their acts, get to know the community they are a great source of inspiration."!

ick Wechsler, born and raised right here in Albuquerque New Mexico, always had dreams of being a comedy star. After graduating from Highland High School, Nick took off to Los Angeles to pursue a career in acting. By his own admission, he hoped to go into comedy, but has been popular in dramatic roles. “I haven't had many opportunities to do comedy," said Wechsler. "Which probably just means I'm not very funny”. He jokes, of course, with many successful TV series under his belt like Team Knight Rider, Roswell, and Revenge, we know he's good at his job. In his current role as Jack Porter in Revenge, Nick says this is one of the harder characters he's ever played simply because Jack is a good guy. Being a comedian at heart, his sense of humor skews to negative, making it easier for him to play a villain. But, no matter what the character is, Nick has a formula for bringing them to life. “I will read a script several times to extract as much information as I can about tone and history and character, and then I store it, internalize it. I just try to relate to these guys.” Every character has a piece that you can relate to. If you can relate to him then other people can too." Understanding is the basis of how Nick creates his memorable characters. Jack is a challenging and different character for Nick to play and is helping him stretch and grow as an actor. Variety is everything in a field where becoming typecasted is easy. The change of pace keeps thing fresh and new. “I will read a script several times to extract as much information as I can about tone and history and character,
and then I store it, internalize it. I just try to relate to these guys.” His rise to stardom has been an uphill climb. He’s had some major success along the way, but also had some times of serious self-doubt and struggling. “I've been at it for 16 years. I've had some success, but I've also had long stretches of nothing, which was demoralizing," Wechsler shared. "I think the hardest part of acting is trusting your worth, despite near-constant rejection.” Like many other careers out there you can be riding high one day and crashing and burning the next. You need to build up your confidence and self-esteem. In Nick’s case, his lively sense of humor has helped through his valleys. He reminisces about the early days when he went out to Los Angeles and the time spent with his roommate, Taran Killam. At the time, Nick wanted to be on the cast of Saturday Night Live to explore and develop his comedy side, but he ended up with dramas and no SNL. His old roommate, on the other hand, wound up on SNL and Nick is so proud of him. “The comedic part of me is jealous of the dramatic part," joked Wechsler. Before leaving Albuquerque for the City of Angels, Nick was a theater actor, with many performances under his belt. But when it comes to taking the jump from primetime to the stage, he admits he's a little apprehensive. “I'm kind of terrified of the stage now. I haven't done any theatre since high school. I used to like it a lot back then, but that was before I did this for a living. I have a fear that if I returned to theatre now, I'd be eviscerated. I should probably do it in that case, get past my fear of it. It'd probably make

me a better, more confident performer But here’s the deal, nah” Nick feels his place is in film, but after so many years in the industry, the stage may be in the distance, distance goal. Showing off his twisted sense of humor, Nick creatively dodges a direct question about the future of Revenge. His convoluted answers point to show rating, executive decisions, and audience response, but not a definite yes or no to if Revenge is coming back. So for those of you hoping for some insight into the shows return next season, Nick isn’t giving away anything. "But what the hell do I know?" Wechsler says. "It's all up in the air until it isn't” Nick

isn’t one for making plans. He likes to stay flexible and keep his options open, whatever they may be. “I don't currently have anything in my pipeline. Which is probably best, y'know? Because then I'm available for whatever. Like watering my plants, or staring at the walls, or sobbing into a pillow.” With such a versatile career, Nick won’t be watering his plants or sobbing into his pillow for long. He is bringing his sense of humor to his "good guy" dramatic role with a flare all his own. If the fans of Revenge have any say in the matter, the show will be returning for another season, maybe more.

timeless classic, Hello Dolly!, one of the biggest musicals of all time and a Tony® award winner, is coming to Albuquerque. Based on the book, The Merchant of Yonkers, Hello Dolly! is the story of a matchmaker named Dolly. In 1955, Thornton Wilder revised the book renaming it simply The Matchmaker. A successful playwright, Wilder’s plays have an enduring quality that allows them to be reprise over and over again across the country.

The musical, Hello Dolly!, has a colorful history of it’s own. It was original brought to the stage as a comedy The Merchant of Yonkers, which was a flop by all accounts. It then regenerated itself in The Matchmaker. The play was reasonably successful and generated a movie by the same name. At the time, the role that would make so many people famous, Dolly, was much smaller. When the musical was revived in the 1960s, it was rewritten to enlarge the role of Dolly with Ethel Merman in mind to play the lead. She, along with many others, turned down the role. The creators of the new and improved Hello Dolly! went back to the drawing board and added more songs and did many rewrites including
the name of the musical. Carol Channing originally made the role of Dolly Levi famous on the stage in 1964. With Louis Armstrong creating much of the music in the play. When it opened, it held the record for the longest running show on Broadway for thirty-five years. They played 2,844 performances in the 1960s. The musical redefined success on Broadway. Many women have played Dolly over the years. In 1964, Gene Kelly directed the scene adaptation of Hello Dolly! starring Barbra Streisand. The movie was a hit. It was one of her first rolls, sky rocketing her career. One of the longest running Broadway plays, it has made appearances all over the country, from small town theaters to high school auditoriums to sold performances in big city theaters. Over the last 50+ years, something about Dolly Levi still steals the hearts and minds of Americans of all ages. The beautifully done costuming, the foot tapping music, or the hilarious hijinks Dolly and her crew get into, there is something for everyone in this play. Hello Dolly! is back on the stage with Emmy® award winning Sally Struthers in the role of Dolly Levi, the strong willed matchmaker. Best known for her role as "Gloria" in All In the Family, Sally began in comedy in the early 1970's. Her most recent role in the CW’s Gilmore Girls bought her back to TV audiences across the nation. She began
preforming on the stage in the mid 1980's, reprising rolls in Grease Annie and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. In 2006, she first played Dolly Levi in Hello Dolly!. In her personal life, Sally Struthers is an advocate for Christian Children’s Funding, helping to feed children in third world countries, mainly Africa. Is it Dolly Levi, the nosy busybody matchmaker who gets herself into one tight spot after another that we love, or is it the nostalgia for a simpler way of life from the turn of the last century that we crave? We may never know what draws us to this musical over and over again, but we don’t need to. Year after year, performance after performance, we are pulled away from our lives for a few hours to world that is irresistible. Sing, dancing, and Dolly are all one needs for a little escape into times gone by.

his month we find ourselves the familiar realm of middle earth as we follow along in the quests of a young Bilbo Baggins in Peter Jackson's second installment of The Hobbit trilogy The Desolation of Smaug. The Movie begins in the village of Bree at the INN of The Prancing Pony. Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) sits down for an evening meal. Noticing he's being watched Galdalf the Grey (Ian McKellen) presents himself to Thorin. Gandalf informs Thorin of a plot to end his life. Convincing Thorin to find the Arkenstone and Unite the Dwarven families. With a little help from a burglar, they can reclaim Erebor the Kingdom Under the Mountain. Flash forward one year. Following directly after the events of "An Unexpected Journey". Azog (Manu Bennet) is hot on the trail of Thorin and his band of dwarves. Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) quickly realizes they are also being pursued by a large bear. Following the advice of Gandalf,

they seek shelter in the home of Beorn (Mikael Persbrandt). Having almost been eaten by the giant bear, Gandalf informs the exhausted party Beorn is the bear. Known as a skin changer Beorn can transform into a man. With the exception of being nine feet tall and having excessive amounts of fake looking body hair. Persbrandt gives a stereotypical deep gritty "I'm Batman" type of performance. For me in kinda stalled the flow of the movie a bit. Getting close to catching the dwarves Azog is called to Dol Guldur and dispatches his son Bolg (Lawrence Makoare). The slightly larger and more menacing Bolg continues to track Thorin. The group of travelers finally make their way i n t o Mirkwood. When Gandalf discovers " B l a c k
Speech" inscribed on an old ruin. In his abrupt ways, Gandalf decides to leave the group and warns the lot of them to "stay on the path" and not to enter the Lonely Mountain without him. Traveling what seems like for days an old fashion freak out ensues. Getting lost, the weary travelers are soon overrun by large spiders and cocooned for a later feast. Bilbo without hesitation slips on the "One" ring and slips away unnoticed. Bilbo now follows the spiders to the nest and soon frees his companions. A magnificent battle erupts and Bilbo drops his ring. With the dexterity of a drug addict looking for his crack rock, Bilbo frantically looks for his precious. A giant centipede unearths itself next to the ring. Finally revealing the true power of the ring, Bilbo furiously strikes down the creature with all hopes of retrieving his love. Rescuing the dwarves and later imprisoning them, Orlando Bloom reprises his roll as Legolas. In a seemingly more manly version than I'm used to, Legolas and his burly wood elves plan to jail Thorn and his friends until they die. Kili (Aidan Turner) while shackled develops a blossoming relationship with Wood Elf Tauriel (Evangeline Lilly). Once again under the cloak of the one ring. Bilbo returns again to free his friends. Having Torin and the rest climb into large barrels they make their escape via trap door and flowing river. And what seems to be an hour long drawn out stint on Mr Toads wild ride. Kili is wounded in the escape by a surprise ambush by Bolg and his Orcs. The dwarves manage to strike a deal with a boat captain named Bard played by Luke Evans. Smuggling them under pounds of fish they make their way
into Esgaroth. There Thorin meets with The Master of Lake Town and promises a share of the treasure in return for supplies and weapons. With a Grand Farewell the group splits up, having to leave Kili due to his injuries. Fili, Oin and Bofur stay behind to try and save him. Meanwhile in the tombs of the Nazgul, a fight begins between Gandalf and the Necromancer. Gandalf is overpowered and It is revealed that the return of The Dark Lord Sauron has come. Now two hours into the movie and two tubs of popcorn and two large Dr Peppers later. Bilbo unveils the rear entrance to the dwarven cave. This is where the true excitement begins. Making his way through the winding corridors he finds his way to the great hall of gold. Overwhelmed by the massive quantities of gold, he starts looking for the Arkenstone. In the process of making every noise imaginable. Bilbo awakens the Great and Fearsome Smaug (Benedict Cumberbatch). Bilbo slips on his ring and a terrifying game of cat and mouse plays out. This is when the anticipation and two hour wait pays off! Ripping, burning, smashing and crushing everything in sight, Smaug sets out to punish the town of Esgaroth. Other than the movie being about forty five minutes too long and having to endure the butt pain of sitting down for two hours and forty one minutes. Suffering from the buttered down insides and overfilled bladder. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie a lot! Peter Jackson has created a perfect midpoint to an already magnificent franchise, leaving us thirsting for more. I give it Four and a half out of five stars.
BET WEEN THE PA PA GES: IRENE I. BLEA B y W inter Flack Flack Irene I. Blea was born and raised here in Northern New Mexico. She has long studied her homeland and it’s customs, as form chairperson of the Department of Mexican American studies at California University-Los Angeles she brings a unique prospective to her novels. The first in her trilogy chronicling the life of Suzanna, a young girl born to a poor family in northern New Mexico and the role gender inequality and religion play in shaping a young girl’s life. The book is rich in description and details transport you in to the beauty and intensity of northern New Mexico of the past. Suzanne is a lovely little girl growing up in devastating circumstances common to so many poor uneducated women. The heart wrenching coming of age story of one young girl’s struggle to keep her family together miles from her nearest neighbors. Speaking with the author she said the subject was not hard for her to write. She had many years in women’s studied and her own personal and painful experience to draw from. The trouble came in trying to create Don Felipe has a full character. “I just could not give him a full character sketch, make him real, until I had a 15 page Word conversation with him. This material never got into the novel, but I drew on it to finally get him written on the page. He was the most difficult character because I did not like him and he did not, via the dialog exercise, like me.” The author’s descriptive writing style brings the characters and the scenery to life. The second book in the trilogy Poor People’s Flower will be released in Mid February 2014. EXTRAS: SANDIA BOWL BOWL COMEDY COMEDY NIGHT B y W inter Flack Flack
P
eople will tell you that Albuquerque lacks a lot of things that other cities have and it’s true, but Sandia Bowl is stepping in to fill one of those needs. They are hosting a comedy night right here in town, every other Saturday night. Walking in the staff was great possibly a bit over whelmed. The small bar in Sandia Bowl filled up quickly for the comedy night featuring numerous local comedians and a first time Host. Everybody was funny but if your easily offended or have tender ears stay out in the bowling area. Offensive subject matter, cuss words, and the possibility of being the butt of the joke were served up on the menu along with cold beer and drinks. The only thing missing was the stench of cigarette smoke hanging in the air. Come to think of it I really didn’t miss that part at all. The comedians were given a short amount of time to impress the crowd and they al lived up to the challenge. Even when the jokes were slow or the timing was off a recovery was always made. This was a promising start to many humorous Saturdays to come.

BEHIND THE SCENES: SANDIA BOWL COMEDY NIGHT By Winter Flack
One of the longest running musicals in Broadway history is making its way to New Mexico. Albuquerque Little Theater is taking on the huge task of bringing the Tony速 Award winning musical, Cats, to their stage. New Mexico Entertainment got a behind the scenes look with the Artistic Director and one of the Lead Actors of the show, TJ Bowlin and Erin Allen. February 2014

n lively burst of energy, TJ Bowlin is excited to be directing this well-known masterpiece. A fan of the musical, Bowlin describes the exciting thing about this musical is what his creative team will be able to offer the audience. "They're actors playing animals, and there's that elements of fun. But when you break down the idea of the characters and what they're going through, it's what we all going through as humans." says Bowlin. "That's the great love of the show, because with every number and every song, you see something of you. What's beautiful about our collaboration with these wonderful dancers, choreographers and artists is we were able to make this wonderful piece of literature our own. It's really been an awesome creative process." Bowlin is working with a cast of 28 dancers, but Bowlin finds the experience - in a sense - easy for him. "The beautiful part is I'm working with people who knows what they're doing and they can have stuff thrown at them and make it their own," shares Bowlin. "This is a project that everyone can be challenged in their own way." And this show is a challenge. Unlike other shows, the cast has to dance and sing for two hours straight, that is the flow of the show, and Bowlin is on pins and needles waiting for the public to see the work he and his staff have accomplished. "Me, Edye and Stephanie [the choreographers] have all talked about that the dancers. They should leave rehearsal feeling like 'I didn't get this right' or 'I need to fix that', because if they don't, we are not doing our job. This should look challenging and they should be challenged as an artist. I want to be challenged by materials, directors and choreographers and the cast is realizing, 'Wow, I really have to work' and it's great." Bowlin loves being part of a production that many may not have seen before. "I think it great. We're educating people of a new type of show," says Bowlin. "It is thought-provoking in some ways, but at the same time you don' t have to think. You're coming to see this fabulous dance and music, so it's one of these shows that can appeal to everybody. It's fun and great and it's something that is nice to bring to Albuquerque, that people can go 'this is different' in some way - if that means the energy or the experience, that is the beautiful thing of what we're doing. Everyone will take something away. From the time you walk into the theater space, it will be an experience. This is not a show where you walk in and just sit down and prepare for the show. The show starts from the moment you walk into the theater. So, it will be something really fun to walk into." 22

t's safe to say that when it comes to dance, Erin Allen was born into it. With both parents, Edye and Tom Allen, being well-established dancers, Allen came out dancing from the womb. Trained in all forms, including jazz, ballet and tap, Allen's dance career is a strong one and she will get a chance to show it as "Victoria" in Albuquerque LIttle Theater's production of CATS. "I initially loved that it was the main dance character for the female, but I love how TJ [Bowlin] has morphed it into me thinking of this character of how "Grizabella" used to be, so thinking of it in that way is so beautiful, plus, I just love dancing that much! It's great!" Allen is not new to productions or working with the choreographer, her mother, Edye. A strong, driven visionary, she is creating choreography that is expending her levels and she wouldn't expect anything less.
"It's such a massive project and I know how she works, so, I trust her completely and know that it will be amazing, which puts me at ease. The choreography is a lot harder than anything I've done in community theater, that's for sure, it reminds me more of what I've done in straight dance shows." She loves the camaraderie of the cast and the collective energy of working towards the goal of making this show a success. If Allen could describe the show in one word, it's a strong one. "Journey - and that sounds cheesy, but the reason I say that is you do go through so many different emotions through the course of the show. There are so many moments that I didn't realize were there, until we started working with them, and now they are my favorite moments.
