alled the funniest farce ever written, NOISES OFF! presents a manic menagerie as a cast of itinerant actors rehearsing a flop called “Nothing’s On.” The play takes a fond look at the follies of theatre folk, whose susceptibility to out-of-control egos, memory loss and passionate affairs turn every performance into a highrisk adventure. This comedy-within-a-comedy captures a touring theatre troupe’s production of “Nothing’s On” in three stages: dress rehearsal, the opening performance, and a performance toward the end of the run. Each performance is portrayed from behind the scenes, progressing from flubbed lines and missed cues in the

dress rehearsal to mounting friction between cast members in the final performance. Brimming with slapstick comedy, NOISES OFF! is a backstage farce of slamming doors, falling trousers and flying sardines! This entertaining show features Colin Borden, Ryan Jason Cook, Dehron Foster, Stephanie Larragoite, Cyd Schulte, Eleanor Smith, Paige Underwood, Rick Wiles, and Stephen Zamora. This contest will put to test our local talent to see who can be most creative and funny “selfie” filmmaker in the great state of New Mexico, all while promoting New Mexico and its respective film industry. A

h, the Kid’s movie. When we are young we love the hell out of them with their simple stories, bright colors, and catchy music. Our parents used to throw them in the VCR so they knew they could have an hour and a half to go into the bedroom and screw our little brother into existence. Most of the time we remember them with nostalgia and know that if we were to try and watch them today the end result would be a wonderful mural of our brains splattered on the wall behind the couch as we couldn’t believe we were stupid enough to have enjoyed them as a kid. Then there are a few movies that held up. Most people would put the Disney classics like “Snow White” in here, but then I think most people are fucking idiots. I can understand why those movies are classics and why children keep watching them each generation but our culture needs to move passed the “All a girl needs to do is find a good man and give him a blow job and everythign is okay” myth. No, I’m talking about movies where even though the effects or time period of the story might make it dated, the story itself holds up even after a few decades. Don’t get me wrong, there are parts of this movie where any sane adult will screem “AHHHH The cute! It burns us!” The basic story, though, still holds up, and even though the science in it is a little shaky the concepts they use are real enough and can easily spark a child’s imagination to grow their knowledge in science. The story goes like this, it is 1978 and David and his family are enjoying a summer together. David goes out looking for his brother in the woods and gets abducted by aliens. 8 years later David shows up and freaks everyone out not only because he hasn’t aged a day but he has a bunch of alien knowledge stuck in his head, hijinks

then ensue. The acting is okay with Paul Ruebens (of either “Pee Wee Herman” or “I got caught jerking off in a theater” fame, take your pick) being a stand out as the voice of the alien craft that kidnapped David. The effects of the ship are still cool even after a couple of decades, and while the animatronic puppet aliens are a little hokey they don’t ruin the experience. The biggest stand out from this movie, to me, is the realistic depiction of what it would be like to be taken out of your time and stuck in another, and that was pretty novel for a kids movie. Up until this point when the hero kid was taken out of his time and put into another it was all fun and games as the kid either got to play with all this cool new tech or wowed the primitives with 20th century knowledge. With this movie they actually point out how David no longer fit with all of his friends, his little brother was now his older brother, and the world had gone on without him. Not to mention that the government would never let him try and lead a normal point from that on anyway. Add into that, this movie used the time dilation effect as a major plot point. They used it incorrectly, but dammit they used it. Should it be re-made? No, not at all. Look, I could see the attraction, it’s a decent movie that has some outdated effects that was just popular enough to spark nostalgia while not being so classic as to spawn a lot of hate. Still, besides the special effects how could you update it? Could the story work setting it in the 2000s or would they put it in the 80s still? Honestly my biggest reason is that this movie is pretty original, the story hasn’t been done to death, I would like it to stay that way. In the end this is a rarity, a smart kids movie from the 80s and because of that it shouldn’t be forgotten. April 2015

leater-Kinney came crashing out of the '90s Pacific Northwest riot grrrl scene, setting a new bar for punk's political insight and emotional impact. Hailed as "America's best rock band" by Greil Marcus in Time Magazine, and as "America's best punk band ever. EVER" by Rob Sheffield in Rolling Stone, the band put out seven searing albums in 10 years before going on indefinite hiatus in 2006. Almost a decade later, the trio--guitarists/vocalists Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein, and drummer Janet Weiss-has come back together for 2015's No Cities To Love. Tucker and Brownstein met in 1992 and formed Sleater-Kinney in a brick duplex in Olympia, WA in 1994. Students at Evergreen State College and members of bands Heavens To Betsy and Excuse 17, respectively, Tucker and Brownstein built SleaterKinney from the fire and feminism of their riot grrrl experience with a language and sound all their own. Named for a road in a neighboring town, SleaterKinney

recorded their 22-minute, 1995 self-titled debut in a single day on a trip to Australia. With drummer Laura MacFarlane, SleaterKinney planted the seeds of the band's distinctive sound, defined by Tucker's urgent vocals and the remarkable interplay between her and Brownstein's guitars. With 1996's Call The Doctor, on Donna Dresch's punk label Chainsaw, Sleater-Kinney was no longer the side project it had been when it formed, and the band's songwriting and dynamic gained even more clarity. Brownstein took on more vocal duties, and the give and take of two powerful voices joined that of the guitars. Tucker and Brownstein honed their process of writing songs together, which Brownstein says is "very specific and unique because the parts are relational to the other person." Along with the its pointed social messages, the album eviscerated the idea that rock godhood belonged to men alone with "I Wanna Be Your Joey Ramone." Call The Doctor also brought Sleater-Kinney together with John Goodmanson, who would go on to produce several of the band's albums including No Cities To Love. That same year, in need of a new drummer, Tucker and Brownstein met Jr. High and Quasi's Janet Weiss through mutual friends. During their first practice with Weiss, the guitarists brought out a new song called "Dig Me Out," and Weiss wrote the fierce, solid drum part that would set Sleater-Kinney's ongoing fiery chemistry in motion. "I always considered Corin and Carrie to be musical soulmates in the tradition of the greats," says Weiss, whose job, she says, is to "take their flourishing parts and melodies and push them as far as I can." This extraordinary formula crystalized on 1997's breakout set Dig Me Out, which brought the band to Kill Rock Stars and again had Goodmanson in the production seat. More pop-leaning than previous records but every bit as hard-hitting, Dig Me Out confidently took on both pleasure and pain with anthems like "Turn It On" and "One More Hour." Sleater-Kinney's breakneck pace continued with The Hot Rock in 1999 and All Hands on the Bad One in 2000. The former, produced by Roger Moutenot, stepped down the band's velocity but not its intensity or complexity; the latter brought John Goodmanson back to the boards for hook-laden, lucidly femApril 2015

In 2001, Sleater-Kinney took a break while Tucker and husband Lance Bangs became parents to son Marshall. The events around his premature birth, as well as the September 11th terrorist attacks, in part influenced 2002's critically acclaimed One Beat. A political and anxious record, One Beat is also supercharged and strident, facing life and death from the band's singular perspective. Three years later, in need of a new setting and musical focus, the band signed with Sub Pop and enlisted Flaming Lips producer Dave Fridmann for 2005's The Woods. Recorded in the literal woods of upstate New York, Sleater-Kinney's final record before their hiatus took the band to significantly different musical landscapes, drawing on classic and improvisational rock as well as self-imposed discomfort and unfamiliarity. The following year, Sleater-Kinney announced an indefinite break and played a triumphant, bittersweet farewell show at Portland's Crystal Ballroom on August 12, 2006. "It was kind of a perfect storm between the anxiety and stress of touring, and parenting," says Tucker of the need for the hiatus. "Those are challenging issues, and they will continue to challenge us, but

I think the time off has given us a chance to come up with some different tools for managing them." And with those tools, as well as a decade of broad creative experience, Sleater-Kinney has created No Cities To Love. "We sound possessed on these songs," says Brownstein. "Willing it all--the entire weight of the band and what it means to us---back into existence." The result is a record that grapples with love, power and redemption without restraint. "The three of us want the same thing," says Weiss. "We want the songs to be daunting." Sleater-Kinney's decade apart made room for family and other fruitful collaborations, as well as an understanding of what the band's singular chemistry demands. "Creativity is about where you want your blood to flow, because in order to do something meaningful and powerful there has to be life inside of it," says Brownstein. "Sleater-Kinney isn't something you can do half-assed or half-heartedly. We have to really want it. This band requires a certain desperation, a direness. Entering the glass mall on Santa Fe plaza no one would eve expect to find such a gem on the second level tucked in the back behind the Draft Station. Perch at a high table on their cover balcony the large menu open. They offer unique offers for pizza including smoked duck and roasted squash to the four cheese pizza topping. The offer an array of sauces from tomato to Alfredo, regular crust or a blue corn crust and 11 number pizza to choose from, of course you may build your own creation from an extensive list. The starter was a hard choice between the Caprese salad and the Bruschetta, but the right decision

was made. The garlic toast came piled high with ripe tomatoes and basil and Cotija cheese, but the Balsamic glaze added a touch of extra sweetness to it that made it divine on the palette. The number 7 wild and domestic mushrooms, truffle oil, and roast garlic was delightfully tasty although I did have to remove a few of the garlic cloves. The Linguine Alfredo with green chile and chicken had just the right kick that any Italian food lover and New Mexican could agree on. They also have a wonderful basic menu for kids creating a family friendly atmosphere and a great date night location with a large wine and beer selection on the menu. A great place for the pickiest eaters and the most diverse eaters to all break bread. together.
