t’s the 1980s, Liverpool, England. Frank is a tutor of English in his fifties, whose disillusioned outlook on life drives him to drink and to bury himself in his books. Enter Rita, a forthright, 26-year-old hairdresser who is eager to learn and to change her social circumstances through the pursuit of higher education. In Educating Rita, Willy Russell delightfully weaves together the lives of these two, unique characters, with great wit, humor, and profound insight. New Mexicans will have the opportunity to experience this amazing play from May 5 to May 21 at the VSA North 4th Art Center by West End Productions. Jessica Osbourne, a Company and Founding member of West End Productions, treads the boards again as Rita. Osbourne shared her love of this play and why Rita spoke to her. “Oh, I have loved the play since the first time I read it. Liverpool has so many similarities to where I come from, so I relate a lot to the world and to Rita and where she’s come from. What I mean by that is, the type of environment she grew up in, I saw and experienced the mentality a lot. Like Rita, I wanted to understand and learn a different world of experiences. And when I was 16, I did that and moved to London for drama school. It was different but enriching. Not that there was anything wrong with life in Cleethorpes, I just knew I couldn’t be or do or learn what I wanted there, so I broke away, much like Rita does, from what she knows. And like Rita, I learned that things aren’t always what they seem from 7I

the other side of the fence. Having worked with Colleen [McClure] on Shirley Valentine, I was excited to get to work with her again, especially on a play that was so close to my heart.” Born in England, Osbourne trained at Italia Conti Academy of Performing Arts, London. Along with Colleen Neary McClure, Artistic Director and Founder of West End Productions, and director of Educating Rita, they have opened the eyes of theater-goers here in Albuquerque to the beauty of British theater. West End Productions exclusively performs plays, past and present, from the United Kingdom. Osbourne shared how positive the response has been. “We are very encouraged by the response to our productions so far and have been pleased to have gained a small, loyal following already, which we, of course, hope to grow and expand with the rest of the season. What I like about Colleen’s choices for the season this year, is that each play, while highly funny and entertaining, has a depth to it that sneaks up on you. And as an actor, that’s a most exciting challenge.” Educating Rita opens Friday, May 5, and plays for three weekends through Sunday, May 21. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 PM, Sundays at 2:00 PM, and will take place at VSA North 4th Art Center located at 4904 4th St. NW in Albuquerque. an of the local band, Beard, enjoyed what the band had to give them, musically. So it wasn’t a surprise that we wanted to find out what makes them tick. What did surprise us is Beard decided to disband in January of this year. But you’re dealing with musicians - music flows through their veins. So we thought it would be a perfect opportunity to find out what it was like being a member in Beard and what life after the band had in store. Mauricio Paez (Vocals, Guitar), Abel Robledo (Drums), and Karie Morgan (Guitar) were cool enough to take part. 8I

What is life after Beard like? Life has been good. Karie and I have a post-punk / alternative rock duo called “The Talking Hours” which has been going strong. We started the duo towards the last stages of Beard. We have already recorded our first self titled EP and have been playing locally and touring as much as we can. We have recently joined with the local label “Orange Whip Records” which is run by Jay Collins of Rock Jong il. Orange Whip Records is releasing a vinyl 7” for us this summer and we will hopefully be working with them for our full length release later this year. Jay is one of the coolest people on the scene and he is so focused on taking Albuquerque’s music scene to the national and world level. I am so
excited about The Talking Hours and excited on what the future may bring. What was it like working together? Working together was for the most part great. Of course like any other band we would have our differences here and there but most of the time it just worked perfectly. We always tried to have fun which is very important. What do you feel is missing in the New Mexico music scene? An audience. Band driven live music is in such a funk. It’s not what people go out for anymore. So many talented bands and musicians out here playing to empty floors on a nightly basis. I am always hoping it will rise again. If you are a fan of live music, just get out there as much as you can and drag a friend along. Now that you have gone your separate ways, what plans to you have now? Karie and I are completely focused on The Talking Hours. It’s our project and we can do anything we want with it. There is a freedom in that and we plan to take it to the top. Do you have any upcoming gigs? We do. We have shows in New Mexico, Colorado and Arizona coming up at the moment. are the type of people which will be friends for life whether we are making music together or not. We may make more music in the future. You can never count that out. Right now is just not the time.

What is life after Beard like? For bit it was not fun. I didn’t think I wanted to play drums anymore. What was it like working together? When we hit the stage or the studio... we connected - it was magic. I hope to share that again some day. Maybe just for a visit some time. What do you feel is missing in the New Mexico music scene? Unity. Don’t be afraid to support your friends. Now that you have gone your separate ways, what plans do you have now? I was all in on playing guitar and looking to get some recording done. But then came STARBOT. A good friend, Nate Candelaria, needed a fill-in drummer for one show. After one jam session, I was hooked! We got to talking and I met the other half - Mr. Travis Wozniak. This starts my new chapter - as the drummer in STARBOT. We are working on a great set of song and can’t wait to share them with you. So keep you eyes and ears open! Do you have any upcoming gigs? Yes. April 18th with Talking Hours at Moonlight and April 19th with Hell or High Water at Launchpad. What do you miss being together as a band? My friends, Karie, Mo and Dave... all the people that came out and supported us every time and made the shows.
Karie Morgan (Guitar) What is life after Beard like? Life, for the most part, has been good. Musically, Mo and I have been focusing on our 2-piece project, The Talking Hours. There was a period in my life when I was playing in two or three bands at a time. Being able to focus on just one has been a nice change of pace for me. I consider myself lucky to still be a part of a project that has a developing level of momentum behind it. If I didn’t have that when Beard disbanded, I think life would have proved to be more difficult. What was it like working together? We had our struggles and differences from time to time, which I think is expected within any type of relationship. That was all trumped, though, when we’d get in a room together to create and write music. There was nothing quite like that feeling when everything just fell into place, simultaneously. There was a magic about it. I think my favorite part about Beard was our live shows. It was almost always a hot, sloppy mess, but we had a connection with each other. We created an energy together that made me, and hopefully others, feel free. What do you feel is missing in the New Mexico music scene? A consistent audience. Getting people to come out to shows, simply for the show, seems to be becoming more and more of a struggle. I also feel that we are lacking in places for bands to play. Don’t get me wrong; the local venues and house venues we have here are fantastic, and I’m eternally grateful they are available to us as musicians. However, I think the scene could benefit from having 10 I

“We may make more music in the future. You can never count that out.” more available options. Mixing it up a little more could help more people be reached. Now that you have gone your separate ways, what plans to you have now? My only plan is to focus all of my musical energy into The Talking Hours. We want to see how far we can push the limits of genre and our own abilities between just the two of us. The challenge is real, but I love the amount of creative freedom we allow ourselves to have. Some exciting recording opportunities are coming up for us over the next couple months, and I can’t wait to see what comes of it all! Do you have any upcoming gigs? We do! Personally, I miss playing guitar from time to time. Collectively, I miss feeling that musical connection with Dave and Abel and getting to spend more time with them. There is a great learning opportunity that comes with playing with other musicians, both on a creative level and a personal level. I
n high school drama, if you dreamed of becoming a Broadway star, you studied Bernadette Peters’ seminal performance in the darkly delightful musical, Into The Woods. Peters is a legend personified, with a dazzling career that spans five decades, highlighted by a string of accolades, including (among many nominations) 3 Tony and 3 Drama Desk awards. Albuquerque will have the opportunity to witness her greatness when she performs for a fundraising event at Popejoy Hall on May 21, 2017. Her upcoming appearance had this writer excited to take a look back at the start of her career. Mrs. Peters graciously shared her story with us. The woman whom Broadway would happily come to showcase began her life as Bernadette Lazzara, the youngest of three in her family. Her mother started her in the acting trade at the age of three. By nine, Lazzara (whose surname, to avoid ethnic stereotyping, became Peters when she received her Actors’ Equity Card) had already appeared on such shows as Name That Tune and Juvenile Jury. Her parents gave her sound advice that helped

carry her through. “My parents told me to be myself and they will also support me. I mean, that’s the best advice you can get, right?” In addition to familial support, Peters’ home city had an appreciable influence on her passion for theater and the thrill of performance she felt in her bones. Living in the Big Apple, Peters found herself (and her burgeoning talent) surrounded by inspiration. “Well, I lived in New York—Queens, New York— and theater was what you took part of.” She even recalled her first performance. “I remember a photo of me in a bunny outfit performing at Carney Hall for Easter.” As her career grew, Peters took direction from watching her idols. “I looked up to Katharine Hepburn….I saw Carol Channing do “Hello, Dolly” the last time when she did it,and it was amazing—I bowed down to her. She was a true performer. But I looked at different avenues for inspiration when it came to performing.” Along the way in her career, Peters had many mentors and teachers, many with memorable attributes. “I didn’t have teachers until high school. I did have some interesting people that taught me prior—a lot of smoking and drinking,” she said with a giggle. “But my drama teacher, David Legrant, and music teacher, Adrienne Angel—I learned a lot from them.” That education has led Peters to become a case study for future high school students who dream of walking the Great White Way. She would continued to build her legacy,performing in such classics as On the Town, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Song and Dance, and Stephen

Sondheim’s Gypsy. When it came to Broadway, Peters and Sondheim created magic, with Sondheim’s sense of story and Peters’ ability to transform his music through unique and powerful characters. For her, it is an honor she is proud to continue to take on. “Sondheim can be a challenge. But I love it. His music transcends, and everyone can relate to his words. I did. I love the way he writes. He takes a topic and develops it so deeply and fully. I can never get tired singing it.” Hopefully, neither tires of the other any time soon, given the powerful success of their work together, such as Sooner or Later, Broadway Baby, and Witch’s Lament. Peters also found a niche on the silver screen, appearing in over 33 films, including Annie, Pennies from Heaven, and It Runs in the Family. When I mentioned my husband’s and my appreciation for her comedic side in The Jerk, Peters shared that comedy should just be a carefree, fun experience. “I remember when I played Gracie next to George Burns,” shared Peters. “He told me, ‘Never 14 I

try to be funny, just let it flow.’ I don’t know—I think I’m funny!” That advice seems to ring true, as Peters continues to make us chuckle with her quick wit and flawless delivery. Peters found success on the small screen, as well, with guest appearances on Will and Grace, Law & Order: SVU, and Ugly Betty. I found myself falling in love with a television musical called Smash that had an ensemble that was a Broadway lover’s dream. But the dream was short-lived, as Smash only lasted two seasons. Peters enjoyed her time on the show and was happy to work with such a stellar cast. “I loved working on Smash, especially since I have a love for Megan Hilty. She is a wonderful singer and performer, and I enjoyed my time with her. Smash was a wonderful experience. I got to work with amazing actors like Anjelica Huston and Christian Borle, and they had such terrific writing. The show has to be expensive to production with the talent that they had, but it was a wonderful show to be a part of.” Bernadette Peters’ talent continues

to shine on two critically acclaimed hits, Mozart in the Jungle and The Good Fight. On Mozart and The Good Fight, Peters plays two strong female characters, and she is enjoying every minute of it. “Mozart is a very creative show, and my character, Gloria, is a strong female lead who knows how creative Rodrigo is, but remembers that she has a job to do as President of the Symphony. What it comes down to, what brings us all together, is the love of music. Lenore [on The Good Fight] is a woman that will do anything to protect the ones she loves, especially her daughter, even if it’s not always good or right, and the way the writers develop Lenore, you never know if her intentions are good or bad. Both characters are a joy to play.” And both shows are a joy to watch. Just finishing with a memorable performance with the Boston Pops

and starring as Annie Oakley in Annie Get Your Gun, Peters shares what projects she has coming down the pipeline. “I just finished The Good Fight. I have lots of upcoming concerts and I’m just about to start filming the fourth season of Mozart in the Jungle.” For a woman who has had a spectacular career in theater, film, and television, you would think that when it comes to what she would be remembered for that her many stellar performances would come into play. But in glorious style, Peters continues to impress. An avid champion of animals, Peters used this moment to share what she wants her legacy to be and what is important to her. “I would like to be remembered for helping animals. People are learning more every day that dogs are more than just a pet. They can sniff out cancer and seizures. They’re more than animals, they’re companions,

and I want the world to know that.” Peters’ love for animals reveals a humble individual focusing on others when it comes to where her legacy will stand. Albuquerque is thrilled to welcome Bernadette Peters to Popejoy Hall on May 21 for her performance to raise funds for the theater. Attendees of the show can expect a lot of fan favorites. “The show definitely has something for everyone. We’ll, of course, do some Sondheim and some of the other shows I’ve been in. Matt Page
M
att Page is a melting pot of talent. Making a name for himself in the film industry throughout New Mexico, Page is excited to see where his career will go. After graduating from Santa Fe University (formerly College of Santa Fe), he started a production company called Riffraff New Media. He followed up by getting an agent and entry into the Screen Actors Guild. “Since then, I have been making a living as an actor, writer, videographer, editor,” says Page. “Pretty much anything I can do to stay creative and get paid for it.” Page has been cast in television shows like Breaking Bad, In Plain Sight, and The Night Shift. He has also appeared on the big screen in Sicario, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, and Maze Runner 2: The Scorch Trials. In 2011, Page decided to create a YouTube show with a creative premise called Enter the Dojo. “I play the role of Master Ken who is a delusional martial arts instructor,” shared Page. “Five years later, we have 35 million views on our YouTube channel and 400,000 followers on Facebook. We

have released four seasons of the show, and I have also toured doing live appearances as Master Ken all around the United States, as well as Canada, Scotland, Wales, England, Germany, and, most recently, Australia.” He has also begun holding seminars on how to teach people to create their own web series. “I get asked so often how I created the show, that I decided I needed to put together some way to communicate what I’ve learned through trial and error over the years,” says Page. “I feel very lucky for the opportunities that living and working in New Mexico h a v e provided me with.” Matt is excited to have some great opportunities coming his way. THE ART WORLD: ROBYN WELLMAN
R
obyn Wellman helps further push the artistic talent that exists here in New Mexico. Wellman’s artwork tells a story, whether it’s bringing the love of the New Mexico skyline and landscape onto a canvas or showing daily life in the Land of Enchantment. Robyn shared a bit about her love for art and where we can experience her gorgeous work. Where did you love of art come from? I think I was born with it. I’ve I think I was born with it. I’ve always been attracted to art, beautiful pictures, and everything visual. I’m a very visual thinker. What I love about art is the way you can exaggerate the things you see and transform them. You can exaggerate the perspective and the colors to create a new world and try to draw the viewer into your 18 I

piece. What medium do you prefer? I like oils for their vibrant colors. I’d like to explore pastels this year. What upcoming shows do you have coming up? My work is currently being shown as part of a “new artists” show in Weems Gallery. What goals do you have for your art? I want to gain more complexity in my work. I want for my pieces to tell a story and transport the viewer to a different place...to a quiet adobe church or a rural setting or back to a Christmas luminaria memory. I want my paintings to develop in that direction. NME -Teresa Ewers
New Mexico Book Co-op
BETWEEN THE PAGES: NEW MEXICO BOOK CO-OP
C
ollaboration is the name of the game when it comes to the local, New Mexico book scene, and no one realizes that more than Barbe Awalt. Awalt is the co-founder of The New Mexico Book Co-op, a partnership of over 1,500 local authors and publishers. The partnership’s sole purpose is to showcase and sell local books. “The idea for the Co-op came from a meeting at the Albuquerque Press Club,” shared Awalt. “A number of us were mad that opportunities were not available for book people to network and hear the current trends. We were told, up front, that book people would not work together, and, obviously, that isn’t true. We have had shows, events, and [we] promote each other in these very hard times.” The co-op has been wonderfully effective at supporting New Mexico authors and the books they have worked hard to create. “NM book people work together to further NM books. The Co-op tries to further libraries, organizations, reading, local bookstores, and book publishing, in general.” The New Mexico Book Co-op also organizes a variety of activities that allow local authors and publishers to promote their books and to make them available for sale to the public, 19 I

along with creating several alliances with booksellers to showcase local books. They also produce a monthly electronic newsletter called CoverReads that goes to 1,200 libraries, bookstores, and gift shops. The New Mexico Book Co-op has received several awards, including the 2005 Book In Hand Award from the New Mexico Book Association for its significant contribution to bookselling in New Mexico, the 2005 Silver Cumbre Award from The New Mexico Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America for an exceptional Institutional Promotions Campaign, and seventeen major website awards. “We have found we are stronger together,” expressed Awalt. “The Co-op has no elected officers, board, or other rotating system of leadership. It is a co-op, so everyone helps.” The New Mexico Book Co-op is a true jewel in the New Mexico literary climate, and we are excited to announce that they will be providing content for our Between the Pages section of New Mexico Entertainment. With the well of authors they have access to, we know that New Mexico writers will be represented in every issue. NME - Teresa Ewers

After two successful conventions, Jim Burleson, creator of Albuquerque and Santa Fe Comic Con, has taken a bold step in producing Duke City Comic Con. The decision, he says, was an easy one. “Fans started off the resurgence of comic cons with both a winter and a summer show,” says Burleson. “When the summer event folded, we found countless attempts to run a summer show fail and disappoint the fans, so the reason for Duke City [Comic Con] is twofold. We know there is at least a vocal demand for a summer event that isn’t being met by a promoter. Wizard [World] canceled 3 times now. I want to fill that need for our community.” Duke City is being held at the Embassy Suites, making this event exclusive and limited. “We expect this year to be a capacity show at the hotel. We are restricted on attendance-

based on the floor plan, so we hope fans will jump on tickets right away or risk being turned away, as they were in 2014 when we hit capacity at the Hotel Albuquerque.” Burleson has been a supporter of the police, military, and firefighters, allowing them free entry to enjoy the event. He wants to continue that generosity to autistic children. “Autistic folks are typically the smartest among us, and, as such, are drawn to this culture,” shared Burleson. “So many of our fans are autistic, and they struggle through our shows, but they always tell us there are a dozen friends of theirs who can’t deal with the crowds and loud noise of the events. I wanted to bridge that gap. Do a little more to help.” On opening day, from 3:00pm to 5:00pm, there will be a “sensitivity opening,” allowing autistic children entry for free on an honor system. The Friday opening is lower in crowds, allowing children and their families to have a welcoming experience. As always, these events will provide opportunities to meet some amazing comic book artists and celebrities, including Nicholas Brendon of Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Criminal Minds, WWE’s Diamond Dallas Page, and veteran actor Angus MacInnes.
