A message from the Head of School Dear Friends: Seasons Greetings from The Academy. I hope all is well with you and yours, and may you enjoy a holiday season complete with good health, happiness and personal fulfillment. Things on campus are bustling, and our students continue to excel making us proud each and every day – they carry on your legacy of NFA excellence with class and enthusiasm. We are in the midst of our annual enrollment and recruitment process whereby students and their families from our partner districts and throughout the region make their choice about where to attend high school. From my clearly biased point of view, the optimal choice for any family would be Norwich Free Academy because of our robust and comprehensive academic and extracurricular program. I believe that NFA offers something special for everyone, and we continue to excel at providing opportunities and preparing lives. As you well know, NFA is truly a magical place. The annual NFA Corporator’s meeting took place Thursday, November 8th, and I can’t say enough about the good will and generosity of spirit that resides within that dedicated group of leaders– thank you. Board of Trustees Chairman, David Whitehead, highlighted the important topics of stewardship and ambassadorship, and we presented the four areas of strategic focus for 2012-2014: Academic Success, Institutional Stewardship, Team Synergy, and Community Engagement. Thoughtful and committed focus in these critical areas will ensure that we remain true to NFA’s mission and its strong core values as an educational institution. Our NFA Strategic Communications Team also shared the Academy’s new marketing program and the associated printed materials, which now properly represent the tradition of excellence and rich history that have always defined Norwich Free Academy. Academy representatives have not formally done alumni outreach in a number of years, and it is time to reaffirm our family commitment by bringing NFA directly to you. In the coming months, we will re-invigorate NFA’s alumni outreach program by visiting New York City, Boston, and Washington D.C. During those alumni gatherings, we will brief you on our planned initiatives and special projects, and, most importantly, enjoy your company and celebrate NFA’s continued success. To our Florida friends, a visit to the Sunshine State is a top priority during the 2013-2014 academic year – I thank you for your patience and understanding. Best wishes for a joyous holiday season and a peaceful new year. Respectfully,

David J. Klein Head of School 4

A message from the Alumni Association While visiting the NFA website recently, the number 38,500 stood out to me on the Admissions page. This amount represents the number of students that NFA has been educating for well over a century. As president of the NFA Alumni Association, I have had the pleasure of meeting several hundred of you this year at many of our events. Who can beat the spirit and camaraderie shown by many of our returning alumni on Homecoming weekend? If you ask me, no one can! On October 20th, the Alumni Association was pleased to welcome back to campus over 20 classes for tailgating festivities which included a baking contest and a tailgate decorate “your favorite sport” theme. The Class of 1950 took home yet another winning banner as they went all out with a display about their favorite team, the CT Sun. The team’s mascot, Blaze, even made a surprise visit! I encourage all of you to reach out to your classmates and get a group of your own together for next year’s homecoming. You won’t want to miss it! I think that I shall never see A poem lovely as a tree. A tree whose hungry mouth is prest Against the sweet earth's flowing breast;

A tree that looks at God all day, And lifts her leafy arms to pray;

A tree that may in summer wear

Several classes held reunions this year and the committees were able to share the highlights of their events at the recent Alumni Association Annual Meeting held on November 7. Alumni members Tim Cummings ’66 and Nancy Delorge Farnsworth ’69 were reelected to 3-year terms and we welcomed to the board Eugene Sullivan ’43, Ann Dugas Carignan ’55, Peter Ballaro ’66 and Cynthia Labrie White ’82. Those in attendance also had the honor of listening to the president of the Class of 2013, Justin Morin. Justin is the finest example of a student attending NFA. His presence that morning assured us that NFA is providing opportunities and preparing young lives for the world outside of the academy. One of my favorite occasions happens the day after Thanksgiving when the Association welcomes back the most recent graduating class for their yearbook distribution. As we enjoyed a delicious brunch prepared by the cafeteria staff, we watched the Class of 2012 share hugs, cry with excitement over a missed classmate, and reminisce about memories which seem like a life time ago.

Who intimately lives with rain.

This year, class years ending with a 3 or 8 will hold reunions. Save the date cards will be going out shortly announcing the day and venue of those celebrations. If your class is holding a reunion, and you haven’t had the opportunity to attend one before, please consider it this time. I have certainly gained a greater appreciation for those I went to school with 35 years ago all because of the time I have spent around classes like ’41, ’50, and one dear to my heart, the Class of 1960. I look forward to working with my reunion committee this year as we begin planning the festivities for the Class of 1978!

Poems are made by fools like me,

On a final note, we lost our beloved beech tree which stood in front of the old Norton Gym for so many years. I would like to share with you a poem written by Joyce Kilmer (1886-1918) called Trees.

But only God can make a tree.

Until the Spring,

A nest of robins in her hair;

Upon whose bosom snow has lain;

Gale Eccleston Ennis ’78 President, Alumni Association Board of Directors 5

Homecoming 2012 6

Alumni classes from 1950-2013 were represented at this year’s Homecoming tailgating festivities on Saturday, October 20. Alumni arrived on campus, some five hours before game-time, to prepare for the day’s event. Popup tents and barbeque grills a plenty were set out by our guests and the mouth-watering aromas in the air made one feel sated without eating one single bite! This year the Alumni Association offered two challenges to our alumni. The first being a decorate your tailgate area contest. Alums were encouraged to decorate with the theme of “Celebrate Your Favorite Sport,” making it generic enough for everyone to become involved. The Class of 1950 was determined to be the winner, with their CT Sun Basketball theme – right down to having Blaze the mascot pay an unexpected visit – and went home carrying the 2012 Homecoming Tailgate Flag to display at future alumni events. The second challenge was in the food category. Alumni were given the opportunity to show off their cooking skills in the “Anything Chocolate” challenge. To say that there was not a problem finding judges for this contest would be a huge understatement, but it was decided the officers of the Alumni Association Board of Directors would be given the honor of performing this most arduous task! Thirteen very different chocolate creations were submitted for judging. While the judges indicated these were the best tasting chocolate desserts they had ever eaten, Saveria Huffman Gagliardo, Class of ’74, was declared the 2012 cook-off winner with her exceptionally tasty chocolate cupcakes. Saveria was presented a restaurant gift card for her winning entry. Congratulations to Terri Debarros ’74, the lucky winner of the halftime alumni door prize drawing, who brought home an NFA alumni umbrella and rain poncho.

Our alumni benefitted from unexpected entertainment at this year’s event when current NFA students, representing the current four classes, pulled into the tailgate parking lot, honking horns, in decorated golf carts for the inaugural golf cart rally. Alums were also treated to our outstanding football team, dressed in their finery, in a “Walk the Walk” parade. Music was provided for all to enjoy by Hey “Mr DJ” Entertainment and students from Project Outreach, Amanda Brenner, Zoie Wallick, and Nowshin Sanzida, provided face painting for our younger tailgate guests. The 1 p.m. football kickoff arrived and our tailgating guests made their way to the turf field where they cheered on the Wildcats who took on the Stamford Black Knights. Unfortunately for the Stamford team, they could not stand up to our furious ‘Cats and went down in a 51-0 defeat. The highlights of the half time activities included Seniors Alexa Franchetti and Ryer Caruso being honored as Homecoming King and Queen. NFA’s Varsity N Club sponsors the annual Homecoming royalty campaign. The students are nominated by members of the senior class and then the entire student body chooses the winners. The court included senior princesses Abby McConnell and Kendall Simmons and princes Joey Mitchell and Gilio Wilson. The Alumni Board thanks everyone who participated in tailgating, the tailgate decorating contest and the chocolate challenge and looks forward to seeing what our alumni will do with next year’s Homecoming challenge!

Hall of Fame On the eve of Homecoming 2012, seven former athletes and one coach were inducted into the Academy’s Athletic Hall of Fame. Athletic Director Gary Makowicki ’73 hosted the ceremony that lauded alumni from the 1940s thru 1990s. We are pleased to announce this year’s class of athletes.

Kate Giardi Ericson, Class of ’92, earned ten varsity letters competing in twelve seasons of soccer, basketball and softball. Her soccer career included serving as captain in her senior year and earning all-conference honors twice. Kate also served as a captain on the basketball team and was named all-conference in her upper and senior years. The 1991 and 1992 teams won both the ECC regular season and tournament and she was selected as MVP of the ’92 ECC tournament. Her softball career was highlighted by being named all-conference three times and all-state in 1990 and 1992. During the 1990 season she led the team in batting average, runs scored, doubles, triples, home runs, RBI’s and displaying a bit of speed, stolen bases. She was the leading hitter for three years finishing her senior year with a .429 average. Kate attended Boston College and was a four year starter on the softball team, serving as captain in 1995. When she graduated BC she was ranked #3 all-time in runs scored and 7th all-time in the BC record books for home runs in a season. She is still ranked #6 all-time in runs scored. She earned Big East Academic All-Star honors in1995. On being selected to the NFA Athletic Hall of Fame she stated, “I am truly humbled by this recognition. NFA has a rich tradition of excellence in athletics; to be a part of that history is an honor.” Chris Tamborra graduated in 1983 and during his career he earned a total of nine letters in track, football, and wrestling. He earned four letters in football, where he was the anchor of the defensive line. In his senior season, the Wildcats, dubbed the “Comeback Kids,” were recognized as the top defensive line in the area, yielding less than one touchdown per game in a 6-3 season. He was honored with All-ECC and All-Area recognition and second team All-State. It was the sport of wrestling where he had the biggest impact. He earned three varsity letters wrestling in the unlimited division. Leading up to the 1983 title, he was the dominant force -- winning all-ECC honors, State LL and Open championships, and State free style laurels. He was honored as NFA’s outstanding wrestler and served as a team captain. The final touch on this championship season was a 7th place finish at the Nationals. Chris competed collegiately for 2 years at national powerhouse Bloomsburg University before transferring to Central CT State University. Chris stayed connected to wrestling after college as a volunteer at CCSU and later at Boston College. Chris was inducted into the Norwich Sports Hall of Fame in 2011 and has been a longtime supporter of Special Olympics in Southeast CT and Central MA. Chris is the founder of the educational consulting firm For Great Physical Education and has received a National Promising Practice award from the Character Education Partnership. On being selected to the NFA Athletic Hall of Fame he stated, “I am really proud and excited to be included with such outstanding athletes, and I am also thankful to my Mom, Dad, brothers, coaches and teammates that helped make this possible.” 8

Award recipients, and others accepting awards on behalf of those who could not attend.

Carl Snitkin began teaching at NFA in 1974 and took over the wrestling program the following year, turning the program into a local and state powerhouse. During his 25 years as the head coach, his teams compiled a 471- 80 dual meet record, including 13 league championships. In 1983, the wrestling program won the first of nine state championships over a 12-year time frame. From 1975 - 2003 the only state championships won by NFA male sports teams were by the wrestling team. His coaching career also included many years as an assistant track coach, where he coached several state champion javelin throwers. He was named the Norwich Sports Hall of Fame “Sportsperson of the Year” in 1981 and was selected as Coach of the Year by the Norwich Bulletin, the New London Day, the CT High School Wrestling Coaches Association and the CT High School Coaches Association. He has also been inducted into the Norwich Sports Hall of Fame, the Springfield College Athletic Hall of Fame, the New England High School Hall of Fame and the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. Carl had a career in powerlifting in addition to his teaching and coaching career. He began competitive power lifting in 1964 and, during his twenty year career, was named New England Champion ten times. He was the National Collegiate Champion and outstanding lifter for his 4-year college career. He was ranked #1 in the U.S. in 1982 and 1983 and was the North American Champion in 1982 and 1982. In international competition, Carl won the Pan American title in 1976, the Hawaii World Invitational in 1982 and the World Championship in 1971. Last year he was inducted into the Connecticut Weightlifting Hall of Fame. On being selected to the NFA Athletic Hall of Fame he stated, “I’m happy and honored to be remembered.” Leslie Eastman graduated in 1972 and participated in tennis, basketball, badminton, soccer, volleyball, and softball. In the first year as a varsity sport, she captained the girls’ tennis team and was a leading singles player. Prior to the varsity tennis team, Leslie was a singles champion in the girls intramural program. She was on the championship soccer team and was a doubles team champion in badminton. While participating in volleyball she was on the honor team, the equivalent of an all-star team and was also on the volleyball championship team and the softball honors team. Leslie was a 4-year member of the Girls’ Athletic Association and earned a white blazer, the highest award presented to female athletes. She was the leading point earner through the girls’ sports awards system. Her most memorable moment at NFA was playing on the tennis team and being part of one of the first varsity sports for girls. Leslie was voted by her peers as class athlete and after graduating she participated in basketball for one year, tennis for three years and volleyball for four years while at college. 9

Hall of Fame

Dan Ruffo graduated from NFA in 1970. He was the ultimate all-around athlete, playing football, basketball and baseball. Dan was an outstanding running back and earned all CDC honors in 1968 after scoring 18 touchdowns for the year. The highlight of the season was the rivalry game against New London before a crowd of 6200 spectators. After being down 18-3 at the half, the Wildcats came back to go ahead in the 4th quarter. They eventually lost when New London scored at the end of the game. Many consider this the greatest game ever played between NFA and New London football. In 1969 the team also finished 7-3. A broken leg ended Dan’s season prior to the final game, but Dan received second team all-state honors to complete his football career. The baseball program had a 39-14 overall record during his career. Dan started as a catcher his lower year and moved to third base for his final two years. As was the case with basketball, the baseball team won two CDC crowns and advanced to the state tournament semi-finals. Dan served as a captain his senior year. George Strouse, Class of ’61, participated in both the basketball and baseball programs. George was a basketball team captain in his senior year and averaged 15.5 points his upper and senior years. During his senior year, the team advanced to the State tournament semi-finals. The 1960-61 team established eight school records, including most points in a state tournament game and best overall record in a season. George was named to the second team All-State. The three years that he participated in the baseball program produced even more impressive results. The overall record during that span was 45-8 with two Capital District Conference championships and two State Tournament titles. George’s 340 foot home run was the difference in the 2-1 victory over Hamden in the 1960 title game. He received the Varity Club Cup, The Silverman, Redgrave and Vincent Awards, graduated with honors, and was selected as Campus King. After high school George attended Gettysburg College and was a 3-year letter winner. He was selected to the Middle Atlantic Conference second team, and also selected to the All-East Major College team. George was named MVP of the Norwich Basketball league in 1968 and was inducted into the NFA Basketball Hall of Fame and the Gettysburg College Hall of Athletic Honor. When told of his selection George responded, “It’s an honor to join fellow athletes who comprise this esteemed group.” Charlie Pieniadz graduated in 1953 and participated in football, basketball and baseball earning eight letters. The 1953 yearbook describes him as "one of the Academy’s outstanding athletes and an excellent student. He is liked by all because of his striking personality and fair play in sports." He was a member of the backfield on the 1951 football team that compiled a 6-3 record, placing eleventh in the final Associated Press state scholastic poll. The 1951-52 basketball team enjoyed one of the best seasons in the history of basketball at NFA. Ranked 4th in the CIAC tournament after completing the season with a record of 15-5, there were eight school records established by this team. The sport of baseball is where he really excelled. The 1951 team went 13-4 and in 1952, as a top hitter on the team, the overall record was 18-2, including a 40-10 victory over Stonington that was highlighted by an 18 run sixth inning. Charlie led the 1953 team in batting average and, in over 23 games, did not commit an error. The team went on to a 19-4 season. Charlie received the Fletcher-Wiley Cup and is a member of the Norwich Sports Hall of Fame. On being selected to the NFA Athletic Hall of Fame he stated, “I feel very honored to be selected.” Edgar Gates graduated from NFA in 1945 and earned a letter in track in his senior year and played 3-years of varsity basketball. Edgar was selected to the Eastern CT Conference All-Star team in 1944-45 and that team won the league championship for the first time in school history. He set a single game scoring record with 25 points and finished his career as the second all-time leading scorer. Edgar was considered by teammates and opponents as the ‘complete team player’. Edgar received a basketball scholarship to play for the University of Connecticut and was a captain his senior year, leading the team to a New England-best 22-3 record. That team was the Yankee Conference champions and represented New England in the NCAA tournament. Edgar received a Graduate Fellowship in Chemistry and received his doctorate in physical chemistry in UConn. He was elected to the Norwich Sports Hall of Fame in 1993.

Tom Lafreniere – Wish of a Lifetime For over 60 years, Tom Lafreniere ’46 had hoped for an opportunity to fly aboard a fighter jet. As a foot solider during the Korean War, he watched as those planes flew overhead, sparking his fascination with fighter jets. He always admired the pilots and the jets and would often say,”someday, I’m going to be up in one of those.” His wish was fulfilled, thanks to the Wish Of A Lifetime organization, which grants wishes to deserving seniors throughout the United States. Tom’s longtime neighbor, Terri Slater, knew of his desire to fly in a fighter jet and took it upon herself to contact the organization and made arrangements for this surprise of a lifetime! Terri said “he’ll just do anything for you” and was thrilled to be able to see Tom’s wish fulfilled. Tom, wife Betty ’52, daughter Jean ’76, and Slater were escorted by limousine to the Orange County Airport in Montgomery, NY where he went on a fighter jet ride. After an hour-long orientation, Tom took to the sky for the 30-minute ride and actually got to fly the jet for a portion, experiencing barrel rolls, 500 mph speeds and “G” forces during the flight. He was co-pilot to Dan Filer, Retired Lt. Commander US Navy, and said that this was a “dream come true!”

Top: Tom & his co-pilot Dan Filer Below: Tom with his wife Betty and daughter Jean

Tom has spent his life giving back to the community, which largely impacted the decision of the Wish of A Lifetime organization to see that this wish was granted, most recently through reunions that he and Betty have hosted serving menu items from the former locally eatery, Bid’s Tavern, that they ran for over 20-years. The proceeds from these reunions benefit the Yantic Volunteer Fire Department and the Norwich ECHO Cancer Foundation. When asked if there was anything else he’d like to do, he responded, “Yes, bobsledding!”

Florida Reunions Scheduled Plans for the Annual East/West Coast Florida reunions are well underway. The East Coast reunion will take place on February 12, 2013 at Benvenuto’s in Boynton Beach beginning at 11:30 a.m. The West Coast event is scheduled for February 18, 2013 at Pelican Pointe Golf & Country Club in Venice starting at 11:30 as well. All alumni interested in attending either event who have not received an invitation in the mail are asked to contact Linda at the NFA Alumni Office at 860-425-5542 or email her at alumni@nfaschool.org.

1961 Football Team Reunion The thought was pretty simple. Since it’s the 50th reunion of the Norwich Free Academy Class of 1962, why not piggyback it with a get-together of the school’s football team from that season? The Wildcats’ lone Capitol District Conference championship team reunited on June 17, 2012 at the Seasons Buffet at the Mohegan Sun. “We actually played our last season in the fall of 1961, and that kind of slipped by unnoticed, but when the 50th reunion came up, some of the guys said, ‘Let’s get the football team together,’ ” Bob Demars said. The difference between the class reunion and the football get-together was that one didn’t have to be a member of the Class of 1961 to participate. The football gathering was for all members of the team. Demars, a senior member of that squad, said 11 seniors from that team were on hand for the reunion. In addition to himself, tri-captains John Leone, Paul Morosky, and Fred Martinelli, along with Stan Lucas, Ray Jarvis, Ed Belliveau, Mike McKay, Dick George, Steve Chmura and Norm McHale were in attendance. Larry Bouley was the head coach, and Rene Ledoux, Jim Giordano, Jim Williams and George Vartenegian were the assistants. “We were a good team and we had an awful lot of fun. There was just great chemistry on the field,” said Demars, who went on to coach football at St. Bernard and then became athletic director at Putnam High School. Led by Leone — whom Demars considers to be one of the three best to have ever played football at NFA, and who went on to become a second team All-American at Boston College — the team finished 7-1-1. Its only loss was to Fitch, although the Falcons were not a member of the CDC at the time. The only other blemish was a scoreless tie with Hartford Public.

Demars said the squad also was the first from NFA to record a win over New Britain. The morning reunion began with a social hour, followed by lunch at noon. The day finished with game films from the 1961 NFA-New London Thanksgiving Day contest. Top: 1961 Football Team Coach and Captains Above: 1961 Football Team

Jubilee Reunion The 18th Annual Jubilee Reunion was held on Thursday, July 12 at the Norwich Holiday Inn. Over 350 alumni from the Classes of 1923 – 1952 enjoyed a lovely luncheon and spent the afternoon with classmates and friends. Frances Dembo Segal, a member of the Class of 1923, was recognized for her upcoming 103rd birthday and was presented a lovely floral arrangement by the NFA Alumni Association.

Ring Appointed as Dublin Judge Her Honour Judge Mary Ellen Ring ’73 (former Senior Council), a founding member of the Children’s Legal Centre and member of the National Crime Council from 1999 until 2005, became a judge of the Dublin Circuit Court on March 13, 2012. She was a founding member of the Irish Association for the Study of Delinquency, chairwoman of the Irish Women Lawyers Association, and a member of the National Crime Council from 1999-2005. Judge Ring was educated at University College Dublin, Dublin Institute of Technology and The Honorable Society of Kings Inns. She is a criminal lawyer and was called to the Bar in 1985 and to the Senior Counsel in 2002. Her practice areas included family and criminal law and civil litigation. In June 2012 Ellen Smith Ring ’35 visited her daughter, Mary Ellen, in Ireland with her son, Peter Ring ’59 and daughter-in law, Jinx. Class of 1977 Holds 35th Class Reunion The Class of ’77 held its 35th Reunion on October 20, 2012, starting with a small gathering at the NFA Homecoming Game Tailgating festivities in the morning, followed by a buffet dinner and dancing at the Moose Lodge in Bozrah. There were close to 100 classmates and friends in attendance with non-stop laughter from beginning to end! Each classmate was given an NFA pencil and asked to write down a memory from their time at NFA and Co-Chair Dana Palazzolo Maul read selections throughout the evening. Pictures from the ’77 yearbook were scanned and projected for all to enjoy as well. Co-Chair Tammy Alferi posted a list of the deceased members of the class and requested a moment of silence to honor them. The reunion committee met to recap the event and began planning the next reunion. All who attended the reunion made it clear they wanted to get together sooner than 5 years from now! We hope to make an annual plan to get together at the Homecoming Game. We also want to build on our small treasury that was made possible by the extraordinary efforts of the reunion committee to phone, email and connect through Facebook with our classmates to build the attendance. Our thanks to the Reunion Committee: Kathy Aberg, Tammy Alferi, Kathy Burley, Shirley Hodkinson, Dana Maul, Ken McGory, Dan Tramontozzi and Mary Wilcox. Class of ’57 Celebrates 55th Reunion Submitted by Barbara Perrino Ricketts The Class of ’57 held its 55th and, most likely, final reunion on Saturday, August 4th with a buffet luncheon at The Restaurant at River Ridge Golf Course.

Carol Johndrow Lapre winner of the door prize drawing

With 75 in attendance, classmates and guests had a great time getting reacquainted and reminiscing. Greetings from our VP, John Urban, and friends unable to attend were expressed and a moment of silence honored 72 deceased classmates. A display of memorabilia included an album of our 50th gathering as well as news clippings of the myriad endeavors folks are involved with, and photos from Steve Goldberg, Len Seidel & Kurt Nack. A “Pilot” from our 1st day, receipts of caps & gowns and Mirrors shared space with grammar school items (do you remember “Boys” & “Girls” doors?) and a ’57 Chevy commemorative plate. The group was undaunted by a sudden “Pop Quiz” and though a few questions proved harder than others, all were answered and rewarded. A “pick-a-prize” offered several sought-after gifts and delighted winners. Especially coveted was the door prize: a painting of “NFA in Winter”, by CT artist Gerald Hardy. The lucky winner was Carol Johndrow Lapre. The formal part of the program concluded with singing of our Alma Mater after which socializing was the order of the day.

The afternoon slipped by too quickly but several planned on picking up at the “Red & White Reunion”, later in the month. We’ll be included in the Red & White Reunion until 2017 when it will be our 60th anniversary and graduation to the “Jubilee” gathering. The committee is, once again, indebted to NFA and, especially the efforts of Linda Ververis and the Print Shop for their expertise and generosity. We also appreciate Bill & staff of River Ridge, who provided a great meal with terrific service and made planning an easy and pleasant experience. We were saddened the very next day to learn of the passing of a favorite teacher and coach, Rene Ledoux, who had started at NFA the same day we did. All proceeds from our event were directed to the NFA Foundation in his memory as requested by his family. Reunion Committee members were Sara Ryan Allard, Merrill Gerber, Mike Gordon, Beverly Walski Korenkiewicz, Barbara Perrino Ricketts, Frances Sanborn Stott, Joyce Rogers Sullivan, Leonora Kunicki Szruba, John Urban.

Betty Coletti Lafreniere Italian of the Year Betty Coletti Lafreniere ’52 was selected as Norwich’s Italian of the Year along with Dr. Anthony Alessi, by the Norwich Italian Heritage and Cultural Committee. Being proud of your Italian heritage is one requirement for being named “Italian of the Year” and giving back to the community – not just the Italian community, but the whole community, is another. After graduating from NFA, Betty attended and graduated from the Backus School of Nursing in 1955 and then worked as a private-duty nurse until she changes careers in the mid-60’s when she and her husband Tom ’47 purchased Bid’s Tavern in the Greenville section of Norwich. Through the years, Betty has devoted hours of volunteer service to the Backus Auxiliary, the Nursing School Alumnae Association, the NFA reunion committee, and most recently, hosting fundraisers for the ECHO Foundation and the Yantic Volunteer Fire Department. hat makes an NFA Legacy?

For the Carignan family, three generations have graduated from NFA, impacting both the Academy – on the playing field and in the board room – and the Norwich community. Lou and Anne Marie Dugas Carignan graduated from NFA in 1956 and 1955, respectfully, and they have certainly had an influence on NFA and the Norwich community through their efforts as well as those of their children and grandchildren. Lou and Ann grew up in Taftville and made their home in the Norwich area after they graduated from NFA. Lou owned C&C Moving and Storage in the Greenville section of Norwich and Ann worked as a registered nurse at Backus Hospital for 30 years. Lou, a former president of the Norwich Rotary, also served as a Justice of the Peace, volunteered for United Community Services Seniors Helping Seniors program and was Corporator of Norwich Free Academy until his death on April 6, 2011. Ann has been an active member of her NFA reunion committee, a member of the Norwich Women’s City Club, volunteer for Hospice of Southeastern Connecticut and was recently elected to the Board of the NFA Alumni Association The Carignan children and grandchildren have played a memorable role in the success of NFA athletics over the years:

Linda

• Gary '78 was a member of both the football and baseball teams, was Tri-Captain for the baseball team in his senior year and was noted for being a great defensive player. After NFA, he went on to play baseball at Florida Southern and University of New Haven. He is currently a National Sales Manager for DTI and -following in his father’s footsteps -- is a Corporator of NFA. All four of his children were outstanding athletes at the Academy. His son, Andrew ’04, was a standout baseball player for the ‘Cats and went on to play college ball for the University of North Carolina and was drafted in 2007 by the Oakland Athletics as a relief pitcher. Daughter Kaleigh ’06, who went on to Clemson University where she graduated with a degree in Communications and Psychology, is currently working at LTK in Boston. She played softball, soccer and lacrosse for the Wildcats. Connor ’08 lettered in baseball and soccer at NFA and played baseball for Bryant University where he lead the team with a .325 batting average in his senior year as the team’s starting center fielder. Connor graduated from Bryant in May 2012 with a degree in Marketing and Communications and is pursuing a career in the golf industry. The youngest of Gary’s children, Olivia ’12, is a co-op nursing student at Drexel University in Philadelphia and is a member of the women’s crew team. While at NFA, she played golf, earning medalist honors, and volleyball. • Laura ’80 was a varsity cheerleader for both the football and basketball teams while at the Academy. She works as a para-professional in the Norwich Public School system at Kelly Middle School. She and her late husband Randy Laroux ’79 have two children Randy and Tyler ’08, who played baseball for the ‘Cats. Tyler is a senior at Central Connecticut State University and will graduate with a degree in Business. He will then attend the UCONN Agronomy program and aspires to become a golf course Superintendent. • Linda ’84 ran girls track and placed 2nd in the States for the 4x400 relay. Gary

In honor of Lou Carignan, a passionate sports fan, Gary spearheaded the first annual, “Road to the Show”, held last January. This event brought together former local baseball players, now affiliated with Major League Baseball, back to Connecticut to provide an opportunity for baseball fans to meet the players, talk with them about their experiences and get their autographs. This inaugural event honored the memories of Lou Carignan and Jack McDonald, a former umpire from the region. The Carignan family hopes to continue this event annually to bring athletes and fans together.

Legacy families, like the Carignans, have long been a part of the Norwich Free Academy. Grandparents, parents and their children have all benefitted from the quality education they received at NFA. Gary summed it up quite nicely, “The quality of the institution, its devoted faculty and the timeless tradition of its legacy makes me and my family proud to be NFA alumni. It sounds kind of like a commercial, but NFA has shaped all our lives and it is important that we help NFA continue to thrive and grow in any way we can.” Are you a member of a Legacy family? We’d love to hear your family’s story...email us at alumni@nfaschool.org! Gary’s children (L-R) Olivia, Andrew, Connor, Kaleigh

Marine Studies at Bluff Point NFA students, from the Main and Sachem campuses, who participate in Oceanography, Marine Studies, Introduction to AP Environmental Studies, and Biology joined teachers Heather Botelle, Lena Collins ’03, and Seth Yarish recently at Bluff Point in Groton to study biodiversity among and within different species and to monitor the health of the waterway. Using a 100’ seine net, towed by the Project Oceanology boat, they collected specimens from two different areas. The tow was repeated a total of 4 times and yielded quite a large sampling of fish and invertebrates. Students collected, measured, and recorded data about each. Later, classes compiled and graphed the data about size and class distribution. In addition, students ran chemical tests for pH, salinity, dissolved oxygen and other indicators to assess the life supporting status of the ecosystem.

National Merit Scholars NFA is pleased to announce that four students have been commended in the 2013 National Merit Program. Seniors Mackenzie Little, Edwin Portugal, John Rollinson, and Samuel Smith are among only 34,000 students nationally commended for their exceptional academic promise. Commended students placed among the top 5% of more than 1.5 million students who took the 2011 PSAT. “Recognizing academically talented students plays a fundamental role in the advancement of educational excellence within our nation,” comments a National Merit Scholarship spokesperson. “Young people recognized as Commended Students represent some of the best and brightest minds in the country…we hope this recognition will provide them with additional educational outlets and motivate them in their pursuit of academic achievement.” 18

NFA Musicians on Stage with Foreigner at Mohegan Sun On September 8, 2012 seniors Hunter Bustamant, Jaron Cotton, Tevin Jourdain, Persephone Marien, and Erin Moebus, choral director Tonya Laymon, and parent and New London music teacher Lisa Marien joined Lou Gramm, lead singer of Foreigner, on stage at Mohegan Sun’s Wolf Den to perform their chart topping smash hit, I Wanna Know What Love Is. Just two days before, Gramm's management team had issued an invitation through Jesse Glaude ’96 of Norwich’s Christ Episcopal Church. The group had only one rehearsal after school Friday afternoon to learn the song, which some of the students heard for the first time at rehearsal. A staff member escorted the group through an underground passage to the Green Room of the Wolf Den, where they met and hung out with the band. The group performed and received a standing ovation. When finished, they were invited to sign a performers’ wall outside the Wolf Den; "The Ambassadors of NFA" is now penned above their individual signatures which graces the same wall as The Four Supremes, Lady Antebellum, Eddie Money, MC Hammer and hundreds of others.

Joint Internship Program In a joint effort between NFA’s Edwin H. Land Library and Norwich’s Otis Library, a student internship program has been developed for eleventh and twelfth graders. The program teaches approximately six students the responsibilities of being a librarian, as well as practical skills that can be used in everyday life. Lessons in library research skills, how to utilize resources, and computer skills will be taught to each participant. Students will work 2 days a week for a total of 20 weeks, spending the first 10 weeks at either Otis Library or the Edwin H. Land Library, and switching during the final 10 weeks. They will each receive a one hour lesson and one hour to use what they have learned each day. Students will not receive class credit for the internship, but will receive a letter of recommendation from the Academy’s Library Director, Kristie Leonard and experiences that will help with their future careers.

Italian Visitors NFA students hosted 31 visiting Italian students in the international student exchange. In this third such exchange program, students attended NFA classes to witness the American educational system. They followed an NFA schedule, and witnessed the talent, variety, and professionalism of an outstanding American school while they followed our lessons to improve their working knowledge and fluency in English. During their time at NFA, world language teacher, Katherine Cannamela, presented workshops

and hosted activities for the students from Liceo Liceo Torelli, Fano, Italy. Included were special presentations about poetry, the American Dream, and American music and song lyrics. Our visitors toured Native American sites in Norwich with Social Studies teacher Henry Laudone, visited the Mashantucket Pequot Museum, and participated in a Slater Museum scavenger hunt with Museum Educator Mary-Anne Hall. On a field trip to New York, they visited the World Trade Center Memorial, the Tenament Museum, Times Square, Central Park, and the Empire State Building. On another trip they visited Boston Gardens, Trinity Church, Quincy Market and the port in Boston. It was a great learning experience for the Italian students and their NFA counterparts.

Homeless Awareness On October 26, thirty-three students stayed overnight on the practice field of the NFA Campus in an effort to raise awareness and promote ending hunger and homelessness in the greater Norwich community. Electronic devices were collected at the beginning of the evening and participants were given tasks to do throughout the night such as making a weekly menu with $42 – the average food stamp benefit – and playing a Game of Real Life, where they had to live on minimum wage, managing all of the bumps and curves that life deals you. “The most difficult part of living homeless for a night for me was trying to budget our money to buy food,” stated Nick K. Participants had to make tough life choices such as taking an extra shift at work or seeing their child in their only play; or, getting vet help for a sick dog or having to put him down. Jessica Z shared that it was very scary to realize that she was not that different from those who are homeless and that homelessness could happen to anyone. “My Dad recently lost his job and that could have easily led to homelessness for us.” Students also heard from personnel who work with the homeless in this area from Southeastern Mental Health Authority Reliance House. A candlelight vigil was performed at midnight to honor those who are homeless, with a focus on teenagers and young adults. This annual event collected clothing, blankets, towels, toiletries, shoes and monetary donations that were, in turn, donated to the Project Homeless Connect event that took place one week later in Gales Ferry. The area’s homeless were invited to attend that event and learn about resources in the community. Ten NFA students participated and distributed clothing to those in need. “The mere thought of people being able to stay strong through difficult times inspired me to do this, because I want to make a difference in someone’s life,” said Jocelyn M about becoming involved in this event. “When I got home I actually stopped for a minute and thanked God for how good I have it,” stated Rachel F, “ I hope more people get involved to raise money and awareness for this worthy cause.” This meaningful experience was made possible with the support of chaperones Kelsey Iovino ’01, Kasey McNatt, Matt Jacobs, Jack Millerick, Sandy Miller, Jodi Vara ’92, and Nick Zito ’03 from Reliance House.

Cheray Fitzgerald Named Teacher of the Year Cheray Fitzgerald, 21-year journalism and special education teacher veteran, was selected as NFA’s 2012-13 Teacher of the Year. Cheray, a graduate of Southern Connecticut State University with a BA in Corporate Communications was first hired by NFA in March 1991 as the audio-visual coordinator. She then continued her formal education receiving her teaching certification from Southern and then her masters and special education certification from Sacred Heart University. Cheray is credited with creating an awardwinning media and journalism program that she started in 1994 with then-English teacher Denise Gravel Grant ’82. Together they developed the curriculum for the program. Since then she has continued to teach journalism and started the video production program once she realized there were students who were not interested in studying television or newspaper journalism. In addition to her duties in the journalism program, she has also taught ninth grade special education resource English, eleventh and twelfth grade special education integrated science and currently teaches special education PACE English. Cheray can relish in the fact that her students enter some of the most competitive journalism programs in the country or directly enter the field. Cheray’s most recent accomplishment was the launch of the NFA student media website that merges print, visual and video media in ways that represent current movement in the field. In her acceptance speech Cheray thanked her family and colleagues for helping to shape her character and profession. “I became a teacher because I love working with young people. It is their passion, as well as the challenges, that always make me look forward to coming to work. My students have taught me more about life than they even know.” She went on to say, “I believe this honor is really a testament of who we are as teachers. I am just one of you who at the beginning of the day runs into work with a bag of tricks, a smile and a warm hello to our students, lots of energy – ready to turn ’it on‘ as soon as we see our first student. I believe in the phrase, ’it takes a village‘ and we know that we can’t do it all by ourselves. We work together for the same cause and I am very proud to represent the faculty here.” The Academy is very fortunate to have many faculty members like Cheray, who go beyond what is expected of them, to provide our students with the tools necessary to become productive citizens. Congratulations Cheray!

Elisa Formiglio – Female Kicker This fall, Elisa Formiglio ’13 was one of the newest members of the Wildcat football team and the only girl in NFA history to earn a spot on the all-male varsity sport team. Elisa has always been involved in athletics and, as a 13 year-old, placed second nationally in the 2009 NFL Punt/Pass/Kick contest. She is former member of the Varsity volleyball and softball teams. With volleyball being a Fall sport, she had to make the tough decision to give up the court and her comfort zone for the unknown on the gridiron this season. “It was an opportunity that I couldn’t turn down,” she said, very happy with her decision to join the football team. She spoke of her teammates with great energy and enthusiasm. “Now they treat me like one of them,” she responded when asked how it feels to be a member of the football team. At first many of the guys were, I guess one could say, uncomfortable about having a girl on the team, but that soon changed when they realized that she was out on the field with the same common purpose as them-- to win football games. Elisa’s kicking ability was noticed by her Physical Education teacher, Jeff Brown ’95, when she kicked a 40-yard field goal in gym class. He mentioned this to Varsity football coach, Jemal Davis ’90, and the rest is history! She went through the same workouts and summer camp as the guys did. When asked if they took it easy on her, she responded, “No, I didn’t want them to, I did the same workout as they did.” When told that their daughter was going to be trying out for the football team her parents, Michelle and Anthony -- NFL Giants and Lions fans, respectively – were thrilled, although Elisa’s friends were finding it hard to believe that she would actually do it. Elisa’s two younger sisters Sophia ’15 and Christina are both huge supporters of their older sister. As a matter of fact, in honor of her sister wearing football jersey #2, Sophia, a member of the varsity girls’ soccer team, also wears a jersey with the same number. Since becoming a member of the team, Elisa has gained the respect and admiration of the players on the team and the other students on campus. The guys on the team now consider her a part of the family, a sister, who’s lucky to have over 45 brothers watching out for her. When asked what she would tell others girls about this experience she said, “I would like to be an inspiration to people of all ages. If you’re good at something or even if you’re not, go for it, don’t let anything hold you back. You’ll never know until you try.” 23

Photos included in National Geographic Program Science teacher Justin Rosenberg was recently notified that photographs he shot will be used in the promotion of an upcoming National Geographic Wild program, World’s Weirdest. The photos are of some genetically modified axolotls, an endangered Central American aquatic salamander. The axolotls that were photographed were genetically engineered to express a jellyfish protein, GFP, which makes the animals glow under ultraviolet light. Axolotls are used in many types of scientific research for their amazing ability to heal wounds, including the regeneration of entire limbs.

We feel a connectivity to one another even from thousands of miles away, and we can thank our experiences together at NFA for that.” The Slowick family enjoys wearing their NFA Alumni Shirts

135th Annual Meeting & Reunion Committee Brunch Above: Sr. Class President Justin Morin with his father, mother and brother.

The NFA Alumni Association Board of Directors held their 135th Annual Meeting on Saturday, November 3, 2013 at the Norwich Holiday Inn. Prior to the business portion of the event, a thank you brunch buffet was provided for the reunion committee members. Board president, Gale Eccleston Ennis ’78, welcomed the reunion committee members and thanked them for their dedication to the Academy and their classmates. The annual brunch is sponsored by the Alumni Association in appreciation of work that reunions committees perform each and every year for their classmates. Classmates representing the Classes of 1982, 1977, 1972, 1957, 1954, 1950, and 1962 as well as Jubilee and Red & White committee members enjoyed a delightful brunch and the company of fellow alumni. The business portion of the event began at 12 pm and opened with a wonderful rendition of the Alma Matters lead by the members of the Alumni Association Board of Directors. After introductions of the current Alumni Board members and the Past Presidents of the Alumni Association, President Ennis went on to highlight the events that the Alumni Board is involved with and encouraged those in attendance to become actively involved with the Board’s work. It is always a pleasure to welcome the senior class president to this event to share with the alumni a synopsis of their years spent at NFA. It didn’t take very long for Justin Morin, the Class of 2013 president, to captivate everyone in the room with his enthusiasm for the Academy and his aspirations for his future. It was reassuring for the nearly 100 alumni in attendance to know that the Academy continues to provide the students, of Norwich and the partner districts, with a superb education. Following Justin’s address, representatives from the reunion committees were welcomed and shared the events of their individual class reunions. The Class of 1962 was presented with a plaque, which will be added to the Reunion Gift wall in the Latham Science and Information Center, by Assistant Development Director, Kathy McCarthy for their most generous 50th reunion gift to the after-school reading program. The meeting concluded with elections to the Board of Directors with four new members elected to serve a 3-year term. They are Eugene Sullivan, Class of 1943; Ann Dugas Carignan, Class of 1955; Peter Ballaro, Class of 1966; and Cynthia LaBrie White, Class of 1982. In addition Timothy Cummings, Class of 1966 and Nancy Delorge Farnsworth, Class of 1969 were re-elected to an additional 3-year term.
