3 ways

to use your lawn to improve curb appeal Curb appeal can go a long way toward helping homeowners sell their homes, and a lush lawn can be used to catch the eye of prospective buyers.

Returns on home improvement projects vary. In its annual Cost vs. Value Report, Remodeling magazine notes the projects that yield the best returns on investment in a given year. But a host of factors, including the type of market (buyers’ or sellers’) and the region where the home is being sold, ultimately combine to determine if homeowners’ investments in home improvement projects will provide the returns they were hoping for. Though there’s no way of guaranteeing a home improvement project will yield a great return, real estate professionals often cite improving curb appeal as an excellent way to attract prospective buyers and potentially get the asking price or more when selling the home. Improving curb appeal makes even more sense in today’s real estate market, when many people do their own searching via real estate websites such as Trulia or Zillow. When using such sites, buyers will likely be less inclined to click on a listing if exterior photos of the property are not eye-catching.

Various projects, including tending to lawns and gardens, can improve curb appeal. An added benefit to focusing on landscaping to improve curb appeal is it promotes spending time outdoors in spring and summer. In addition, many lawn- and garden-related home improvement projects need not require professional expertise.

1. MAINTAIN A LUSH GREEN LAWN.

Lawns that fall into disrepair may not give buyers a correct impression about how homeowners maintained their homes. Lawns with multiple dead spots and grass that appears more brown than green may lead many buyers to assume that the home’s interior was equally ill-cared for. Maintaining lush green lawns is not as difficult as it may seem. Applying fertilizer and aerating at the appropriate times of year (this varies by region) can promote strong roots and

healthy soil, making it easier for grass to survive harsh conditions like drought. When watering in summer, do so in early morning or evening so as little water is lost to evaporation as possible.

2. ADDRESS BROWN PATCH.

Even well-maintained lawns can fall victims to brown spots. According to the lawn care professionals at TruGreen, lawns in regions with hot temperatures and high humidity can be infected with brown patch, a common lawn disease that is caused by fungus, which can produce circular areas of brown, dead grass surrounded by narrow, dark rings. Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences notes that removing dew that collects on grass leaves each morning, which can be accomplished by mowing or dragging a water hose across affected areas, can be an effective way to reduce brown patch. Homeowners without much lawn

care experience can consult professional landscapers to address the issue. But those looking to sell their properties should note that buyers often walk the grounds of homes they are considering buying. So addressing any issues on the lawn should be a priority for sellers.

3. CONFINE DOGS TO CERTAIN AREAS.

Dog owners may want to let their pets roam free in their yards. But homeowners about to put their properties up for sale may want to confine their four-legged friends to certain areas. That’s because dog urine can be high in nitrogen. Nitrogen itself is not harmful to lawns, but in high concentrations it can contribute to yellow or brown spots. Also, highly acidic dog urine may even adversely affect pH levels in the soil.

Electric or hybrid vehicles can be smart additions to eco-friendly lifestyles. Although such cars were once science fiction, EVs are now increasingly more common and traversing roadways around the world. Thanks to several mainstream brands offering EVs and hybrid models, consumers are more informed than ever before about the benefits of a plugged-in ride.

Still, even with the wealth of information available, some people still may be unsure about what owning an EV entails and how to make informed decisions when shopping for such vehicles. Going electric means thinking beyond the gas station. Here’s how to navigate the ins and outs of EVs.

• TYPE OF VEHICLE:

First consider that not all EVs are the same. Hybrid vehicles use a mix of gasoline and electricity and tend to have long fuel ranges. All-electric cars will only use electricity that is gained through charging the vehicle for a certain period of time.

• AFFORDABILITY:

Consumers can expect to pay more for electric and hybrid vehicles than gas-powered vehicles. But as demand increases, costs may drop. According to a report from USA Today, estimates point to EVs as being as affordable as gas vehicles by 2021. Another consideration is there may be tax incentives for purchasing an EV. Speak with a tax professional to see if this is applicable.

• ENVIRONMENTAL SAVINGS: Electric cars produce

no emissions from the tailpipe and reduce dependency on oil-based fuels. Furthermore, EVs will not need oil changes or emissions checks that traditional cars require, further saving resources. The resource Plug in Cars says that EVs can also save on fuel costs, ranging at 2 cents per mile

traveled, compared to 12 cents for gasfueled vehicles.

Is Marinating worth the time and effort?

F17531825

Backyard barbecue enthusiasts typically prefer the taste of grilled foods over meals prepared in other ways. Much of that devotion to grilled foods can be traced to the unique flavor open flames impart to meat, poultry and other items.

G

rillmasters who have made marinades part of their grilling routines may be surprised to learn that Schlesinger and Willoughby recommend spice rubs over marinades. Marinating only flavors the surface of the meat, which may surprise marinade devotees who think marinating several hours prior to firing up the grill provides ample time for the flavor of marinades to soak into the meat. Regardless of how far in advance marinades are applied, they’re unlikely to penetrate deep into the interior of the food. Schlesinger and Willoughby note that rubs provide strong, defined flavors. An additional benefit of rubs over marinades is that rubs need not be applied hours in advance of grilling. In fact, rubs applied minutes before foods are placed on the grill will still provide an intense burst of flavor.

C

ooks who marinate to tenderize their grilled foods may also be surprised to learn that Schlesinger and Willoughby suggest that this, too, is a waste of time. The authors note that marinades, especially those left on for too long, may make foods taste mushy, a taste that’s vastly different from tender. In lieu of relying on marinade to tenderize meats, cooks can make sure foods are cooked to the appropriate temperature. Read recipes carefully to learn what the appropriate temperature for a given dish is. If the recipe does not list a temperature, the Food Network offers the following guidelines to cooks who want to ensure their foods are cooked to the right temperature.

any people try to bolster the flavor of grilled foods even further by marinating items, often for several hours, before putting them on the grill. How to

manage relocating for a new job In its Job Relocation Survey, the moving company Allied Van Lines found that people move for a variety of reasons. Fifty percent of the 3,500 respondents indicated they relocated for career advancement or money, and many more indicated they relocated because of a job transfer (12 percent), their companies moved (9 percent) and to be closer to family/relationships (8 percent). stress associated with relocating can be traced to the logistics of uprooting oneself and one’s family. Men and women who are unaccustomed to making lists may want to start, as doing so can help keep track of all the tasks that need to be completed before hitting the road. Various unique tasks, from canceling utilities to changing insurance policies, must be completed before moving, and it’s easy to lose track of what’s been done and what hasn’t. Maintaining a to-do list and checking off tasks as they’re completed can simplify the relocation process.

According to National Health Examination Surveys, adult obesity trends in the United States between 1976 and 2014 indicate the percentage of the adult population classified as obese has roughly doubled to more than 38 percent in the last three decades. Children may be learning eating habits from their parents, potentially contributing to rising obesity rates in children as well. Recent findings from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicate one in five school-aged children and young people in the United States is obese. In Canada, the Public Health Agency says roughly one in seven children is obese. Teaching children healthy eating habits starts at home and can extend to what students are given to eat while at school. The Center for Science in the Public Interest says schools across the country are working hard to improve school nutrition. Here’s how parents and school districts can help make school lunches more nutritious and delicious and lower in calories.

Are Meal Delivery Services right for your family?

Working parents are busy with commitments to work, family and their children’s school and extracurricular activities. As a result of such commitments, families may find they have little time to devote to cooking, let alone shopping for food.

PROS

Meal delivery kits’ biggest selling points are convenience and ease of preparation. Such kits may it possible for even novice home cooks to prepare restaurant-quality meals in their own kitchens. The boxes are filled with a week’s worth of ingredients for various recipes. The recipes spell out, step-bystep, how to create delicious meals. Meal kits can provide a great way to try new foods, enticing eaters to try different recipes. They’re also a good idea for families or singletons who may be bored preparing their typical staples. Another advantage to meal kits is the portions of the meals are already determined, helping people better control how much they eat. Meal kit users also are unlikely to waste food, which might

be common for those accustomed to preparing large meals they rarely finish.

CONS

research to find companies that offer foods that fit with dietary preferences, such as those that cater to food allergies or vegan diets or companies that provide organically sourced ingredients. Environmentalists may frown upon the excess packaging and cooling packs used in some meal kits. Consumers must be committed to recycling or reusing packaging to make meal kits more eco-friendly. Families who want to give meal kits a try are urged to read reviews on services and check out available menus to ensure the investment is worth it. If convenience is key, meal kits may be the ideal fit.

Cost is usually the biggest detriment to meal kits. Even though meal kits may cost less per person than dining out, they’re still on the expensive side. Meal kit devotees pay for the convenience of having someone plan, package and ship high-quality meals to their doorsteps. Meals may cost anywhere from $50 to $200 per week, with the average at about $10 per meal, per person, says Pentallect. People who can get great deals at grocery stores may feel meal kits are not worth the cost. Another potential problem with meal kits is that consumers may be at the mercy of the company in terms of the variety of foods available to them. Picky eaters may find the kits include items they will not eat, which Under New Management can make kits a 2 Bedrooms, 1 Bathroom • $695-$850 • 850 sq. ft. waste of money and food. As an alternative to dining out, which can be expensive, many families are exploring home-delivery meal kits. Consumer research firm Pentallect predicts the meal-kit business will grow by as much as 30 percent over the next five years. Here is a look at the advantages and disadvantages to them.

lockers keep students on track School is often a student’s home away from home. Spending an average of six hours per day and five days a week, 10 months a year in the classroom or on campus, students may feel as though they spend more time roaming school grounds than they do relaxing at home. Lockers can be havens for students, giving them a place to store supplies and personal items and meet up with friends each day. Organized lockers may help students handle all of their responsibilities more capably. Developing organizational habits early on is a worthwhile lesson for students, helping them avoid tardiness and keep their assignments in order. Students typically keep a number of items in relatively small lockers, which only makes it more challenging to stay organized. The following tips can help students stay organized this school year.

• MAKE THE MOST OF LOCKER SPACE. Space is limited, but with some additions, lockers can be that much more functional. Insert a removable shelf to double the space available.

to harmful VOCs at home Volatile organic compounds are emitted by a vast array of products. The Environmental Protection Agency warns that VOCs consist of gases discharged from solids or liquids that produce short- and long-term health effects.

To reduce exposure to VOCs, homeowners are advised to take the following steps. • Read product labels carefully for warnings against VOCs. Whenever possible, select products that do not emit VOCs. • Invest in alternative products, such as all-natural cleaning solutions. Many people find that common and safe items like vinegar, citrus oils and baking soda are as effective as chemical cleaners without the same harmful side effects. • Use an air purifier in conjunction with HVAC systems. Purchase an air purifier that specifically filters out odors and VOCs, which can help people with chemical sensitivities. • Rely on natural ventilation when using products that have strong odors or are suspected of emitting VOCs. This can be as easy as opening windows and doors or doing work outside. • Use a shed rather than an attached garage to store gas cans, pesticides, paint thinners, and other odoriferous materials away from the home. Contact the municipal waste department to learn how to properly dispose of leftover chemical products. • Rethink flooring materials to include carpeting that is low VOC or alternatives such as washable rugs or hard flooring. • Don’t forget to fill a home with plenty of live plants. A study from researchers at NASA found that certain indoor plants are effective at naturally purifying air. • Exercise caution with dry-cleaned clothes. Perchloroethylene is a chemical most widely used in dry cleaning. Air out dry-cleaned clothes before wearing them, particularly if they have strong chemical odors. 20 homes.newsminer.com

Volatile organic compounds can be excreted through various items. Individuals who educate themselves can greatly reduce their exposure to these harmful compounds.

F24531331

Reduce Exposure

VOCs are particularly troubling because their concentrations are consistently up to 10 times higher indoors than outdoors. Those who spend time inside of homes and businesses may be at risk from concentrated exposure to VOCs. Notable items that produce VOCs include treated woods, carpeting, building materials, paints, waxes, fabrics, and varnishes. Since people are constantly breathing in air, and whatever is circulating within it, it’s important for individuals to be conscious of these common offenders. VOCs can be dangerous because they may cause everything from minor symptoms of headaches, nausea and stuffy noses to more serious conditions like nervous system problems and kidney and liver damage. Some VOCs are known to cause cancer in humans, warns the EPA.

to keep kids safe in crowded areas

Parents never expect to lose their children, but losing kids in crowded public places is possible. Being prepared and acting calmly can help parents quickly find their lost children. Amusement parks, beaches, tourist attractions, concerts, and local fairs attract families each year. Such outings can be exciting and enjoyable excursions, but panic sets in immediately when parents lose track of their children. It takes mere seconds for curious children to wander off, and as the minutes tick by and kids don’t return, parents may be overcome with anxiety. Many parents have lost track of their children in crowded public places. Having a plan in place can save families anxiety when traveling through crowded locations.

• TAKE AN UP-TO-DATE PHOTO.

Snap a digital head-to-toe picture the day of the trip. This can make it easier for authorities to identify lost children. In a stressful situation, parents may forget what their children were wearing when they went missing. A photo taken the day of the event can help authorities.

• DRESS CHILDREN IN BRIGHT COLORS.

Dressing children in very bright colors makes them more visible in a crowd. Lime green, yellow and red clothing can help make children more noticeable.

• ESTABLISH AN EMERGENCY PLAN.

Families should come up with a plan for reuniting if they get separated. This may include children going up to an authority figure for help or another mother with children. Families also can choose a meetup location, such as a highly visible spot in a theme park (think roller coaster or Ferris wheel) or at the front gate. Upon arriving at your destination, go over the plan so it is fresh in everyone’s mind.

four, Mom might be watching Joseph while Dad is watching Caitlin. A clear plan means parents can focus their attention accordingly to keep kids safe.

• USE A CHILD SAFETY HARNESS.

Safety harnesses can calm the nerves of parents worried about wandering toddlers. This device tethers a child to his or her parent or guardian, preventing kids from wandering off.

• IDENTIFY PEOPLE CHILDREN CAN LOOK TO • WRITE DOWN PARENTAL FOR HELP. CONTACT INFORMATION. Kids who were taught “stranger danger” Some parents tuck a piece of paper with their cell phone numbers in their child’s pocket, while others write the number directly on a kid’s arm with a marker or pen. Some parents even apply temporary tattoos indicating their home and/or mobile numbers. Such efforts make it easy for authorities or other adults to contact parents if a child needs assistance.

may hesitate to go up to other people and ask for help. Parents can identify lifeguards or workers who can assist them should kids become separated from their parents.

• ASSIGN AN ADULT TO EACH CHILD.

The Secrets to being an organized family

Modern families seem to be juggling more than ever before. When time seems to be a luxury, an ability to stay organized can help families manage the hustle and bustle of daily life more effectively. An online survey conducted by an internal research team on behalf of The Huffington Post polled more than 1,000 American adults in 2013, revealing 84 percent of recently stressed Americans say they worry that their home isn’t clean or organized enough. Within that group, 55 percent cited disorganization at home as a source of recent stress.

MANAGE MORNINGS

Families can usually use more help getting out of the house each morning in a timely manner. Each member of the household should have a designated area where they keep the items they will need for the next morning. Backpacks and briefcases should be prepacked, and lunches made the night before. In addition, sort the next day’s clothes before going to bed. Such efforts should make it easier to get out of the house on time each morning.

SORT THE ENTRYWAY

Home entryways are usually hubs of traffic. Such areas are the first and last place family members go when entering or leaving the house. As a result, these

areas are in need of some routine organizational attention. Use sorting bins for shoes, hooks for coats, trays for mail or homework, and other sorting equipment to keep things tidy and orderly.

EMBRACE THE PURGE

Take a hard look at what you use and what you don’t use around the house. Holding on to items you rarely use can contribute to clutter and create a disorganized home. Save only a few sentimental items, donating, recycling or discarding the others. Many organizational experts suggest going through items one by one and asking oneself if this is something that has been used recently. If it’s been collecting dust for a year or more, it can go.

SENSIBLE STORAGE

Analyze what you have and then find sensible storage solutions. Store

belongings in the same place each day so items are easy to find when needed. Frequently used items should be easily accessible. Seldom used items, such as holiday decorations, can be stored out of the way. It takes commitment and time to get organized. However, life tends to move along much more smoothly in organized homes than homes marked by clutter.

When messes start to creep up, it is probably time to commit to getting more organized!

F64532075

Disorganization does not occur overnight, and neither will getting reorganized. But with some motivation, all families can become more orderly.
