Family friendly places to call home Proximity to recreation, school district rankings, median house prices, and availability of family attractions can make certain towns and cities more family-friendly than others.

What makes a home inviting to one person may deter another. For example, some people want to reside in urban centers in close proximity to public transportation, culture and nightlife, while others may be looking for a swath of property to raise livestock or enjoy privacy from neighbors.

Media rooms now edge out home theaters

Not so long ago many homeowners were racing to outfit their homes with home theater spaces. If spaces allowed, homeowners would transform rooms into dark, theater-like retreats, complete with large screens, surround sound and reclined seating. Interest in such spaces has waned in recent years, with many homeowners opting for media rooms instead. So what is the difference between these spaces? DESIGN SERVICES

ccording to HGTV, a home theater is a room designed to replicate the experience of the cinema. A media room is a multipurpose space where people can gather to enjoy any type of media, from TV to music to gaming systems. Home theaters tend to limit activity to watching movies. However, homeowners interested in more versatile paces may find media rooms are much more practical. media room is an option for families who want a theater experience in common areas or open-concept living spaces, says Digitech Custom Audio and Video System Integration

Specialists. Media rooms frequently feature comfortable, customizable seating, rather than rows of seats facing the screen that are standard in home theaters. Guests can converse in media rooms while enjoying a show, streaming music or gaming. Various design layouts are possible, including furniture that conceals electronics so the media room can be an entertainment lounge one minute and a theater the next. ecause media rooms are not as isolated as home theaters, the acoustics in such rooms may be compromised. Data Breach As the summer of 2017 drew to a close, news broke of a data breach at the credit monitoring agency Equifax. Reports suggested the breach might have compromised the sensitive personal information of as many as 143 million Americans, or roughly half the adult population of the United States. In the digital age, consumers are more vulnerable to such breaches than ever before. Data stolen as part of the Equifax breach included names, social security numbers and birthdates, among other personal information. Consumers concerned about data breaches can take certain steps to determine if they have been compromised while also taking measures to safeguard themselves against future breaches.

Fire up the grill for fresh veggies

Vegetables are more versatile than many people may know. Steaming or sautéing vegetables might be among the most popular ways to cook veggies, but grillmasters know that it’s not just main dishes that taste great when cooked over an open flame. As the following recipe for “Charred Green Beans with Lemon Verbena Pesto” from Karen Adler and Judith Fertig’s “The Gardener & The Grill” (Running Press) can attest, grilled vegetables make for simple yet satisfying side dishes.

Charred Green Beans with Lemon Verbena Pesto Serves 2 to 4

Green Beans 1-1⁄2 pounds slender green beans 2 teaspoons olive oil

F17530678

Lemon Verbena Pesto 1 cup fresh lemon verbena leaves (substitute fresh lemon balm leaves) 2 garlic cloves 1⁄4 cup grated Parmesan cheese 1⁄4 cup pine nuts or English walnuts 1⁄2 cup olive oil Fine kosher or sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

Prepare a hot fire in your grill. Toss the beans with olive oil and place in a perforated grill basket or wok set on a baking sheet. For the Lemon Verbena Pesto, combine the lemon verbena, garlic, cheese, and nuts in a food processor and pulse to puree. Slowly add the olive oil with the processor running until the mixture thickens and emulsifies, about 1 minute. Season to taste with salt and pepper. The pesto will keep in the refrigerator for 7 to 10 days, or it may be frozen for up to 3 months. Place the grill wok or basket directly over the fire and stir-grill, tossing the beans with wooden paddles or grill spatulas until crisp-tender, about 5 to 8 minutes. Transfer the grilled beans to a large bowl and toss with about 1⁄4 cup of the Lemon Verbena Pesto or to taste.

Green tomatoes

not just for the frying pan Perhaps in part due to the popular 1991 film “Fried Green Tomatoes,” many people are familiar with the Southern United States side dish of the same name. But as proven by the following recipe for “Grilled Green Tomato ‘Sandwiches’ with Herbed Cream Cheese” from Karen Adler and Judith Fertig’s “The Gardener & The Grill” (Running Press), green tomatoes can be even more delicious when grilled than they are when fried.

Grilled Green Tomato “Sandwiches” with Herbed Cream Cheese Serves 6

Herbed Cream Cheese 1 8-ounce package cream cheese at room temperature 1 garlic clove, minced 2 tablespoons chopped fresh basil 1 tablespoon snipped fresh chives Tomatoes 4 large green tomatoes (about 11⁄2 pounds), sliced 3⁄4-inch thick (to make 12 slices) Olive oil, for brushing 2 teaspoons Seasoning Salt (see below) or kosher salt Ground black pepper

Prepare a medium-hot fire in your grill. Place a well-oiled perforated grill rack over direct heat. In a bowl, blend the cream cheese, garlic, basil, and chives together until smooth. Set aside. Brush the tomato slices with olive oil on both sides and season with seasoning salt and pepper. Place the slices on a baking sheet and bring out to the grill with the bowl of Herbed Cream Cheese and a knife for spreading. Grill all of the tomatoes on one side for about 3 minutes with the lid open, then flip and grill on the other side for 3 minutes more, or until the tomatoes have good grill marks. Remove the tomato slices from the grill and allow to cool slightly on the baking sheet. Spread Herbed Cream Cheese on half of the slices, top with a second slice and set the sandwiches on a platter. Serve the sandwiches hot, with oozing cream cheese filling. Variation: Grill all of the tomato slices as above and top each grilled tomato with a dollop of the cream cheese and serve open-faced.

Productive ways to spend the summer after graduation

Graduation is a momentous day in the lives of college students. After years of schooling that dates all the way back to preschool or kindergarten, newly minted college graduates are finally ready to begin their professional lives. That can be a scary prospect for some students, especially those who graduate without jobs lined up. The summer after graduating from college can be a time like no other in the lives of new graduates. It can be easy to grow dejected as weeks or months go by without receiving a job offer. But spending the summer after graduation as productively as possible can help graduates overcome any dejection they might feel and increase their chances of landing a job.

• CONTACT CAREER SERVICES OFFICES AT YOUR ALMA MATER. Career services offices can

help recent graduates as they look for their first jobs out of college. Such offices may have access to job and internship opportunities that grads do not. In addition, they may coach grads on interviewing techniques and on ways to stand out in crowded job markets.

• SEEK INTERNSHIPS.

Home is where the heart is. Not to mention all your stuff.

If part- or full-time employment is proving elusive, don’t be afraid to seek and ultimately accept internships, which can provide a way for grads to get their foot in the doors in certain industries. Summer internships may already be filled, so scour job boards for fall or winter internships.

Let us help you get the protection you need. We know home insurance. We can help you protect your home and everything in it. Call us today to discuss your coverage options.

Students who interned can get in touch with their past supervisors or mentors and find out if the company

is hiring. Such people may be more inclined to bring someone with direct experience onboard — even if that experience was brief and unpaid. In addition, grads can connect with adjunct professors who work in their desired fields.

• WHEN JOB HUNTING, DON’T GET PIGEON-HOLED BY YOUR MAJOR. Just because a student

graduates with a particular degree does not mean he or she needs to look for work in that field. In fact, many companies may prefer entry-level applicants with degrees that are not specific to their industries so their new hires are blank slates who can be easily trained.

It can be tempting for recent college grads to spend the summers after graduation relaxing, but those who spend that time productively may lands jobs more quickly than those who do not.

Grill up hot dogs with the works

Backyard barbecues simply would not be the same without hot dogs. While many people may not eat hot dogs during much of the year, come summertime when the grills are fired up, hot dogs take center stage. Hot dogs make great additions to backyard barbecues because they can be tinkered with to provide a host of different flavors. Those who really want their hot dogs to pack a flavorful punch can try the following recipe for “Hot Dogs Stuffed with the Works” from Andrew Schloss and David Joachim’s “Mastering the Grill” (Chronicle Books).

Heat the grill as directed. 2. Mix the mustard, ketchup and sauerkraut in a small bowl. 3. Slit the hot dogs lengthwise, forming a deep pocket end to end in each one. Fill the pockets half-

way with the sauerkraut mixture. Put a stick of cheese in the center of each and top with the remaining sauerkraut mixture. Wrap a bacon slice around each hot dog to hold it together, and secure the ends of each bacon strip with wooden toothpicks. 4. Put the grill screen on the grill and coat it with oil. Wait a minute or two, until the surface is hot. Grill the hot dogs until the bacon is cooked through and the hot dogs are browned on all sides, about 2 minutes per side. 5. To toast the buns, put them cutsides down directly over the fire for the last minute of cooking. Serve the hot dogs on the buns.

The following recipe for “Sunday Picnic Deviled Eggs” from Neal Corman and Chris Peterson’s “Virgil’s Barbecue Road Trip Cookbook” (St. Martin’s Press) is fairly spicy and can provide a little extra kick at your next picnic.

Sunday Picnic Deviled Eggs Serves 4 to 6 8 1⁄4 1 1⁄4 1⁄4 1⁄2 1⁄4 2 1 1⁄2 1 2

extra-large eggs cup mayonnaise teaspoon Creole mustard teaspoon Cholula Hot Sauce teaspoon ground cumin teaspoon kosher salt teaspoon cracked black pepper teaspoons finely chopped pickled jalapeño slices teaspoon pickled jalapeño juice Hass avocado, peeled and pitted Pinch of smoked paprika tablespoon chopped fresh cilantro ounces dried Spanish chorizo

1. Place the eggs in a medium pot and cover with cold water. Bring to a boil, cover the pot and remove from the heat. Keep covered for 11 minutes, then remove the eggs from the water and place in a bowl of ice water to stop the cooking process. 2. Preheat a sauté pan. Cut the chorizo into very small dice and sauté until crispy. Set aside to cool. 3. In a small bowl, combine the mayonnaise, mustard, hot sauce, cumin, salt, pepper, jalapeño, and jalapeño juice. 4. When the eggs have cooled, carefully crack the shells and peel under cold running water. Slice the eggs lengthwise and remove the yolks, being careful to leave the whites intact. 5. Combine the avocado and egg yolks in a small bowl, and mash together with a fork until smooth. 6. Add the avocado mixture to the mayonnaise mixture and blend thoroughly. Spoon the mixture into each half of egg white. Dust with the paprika, sprinkle with the cilantro and chorizo, and serve. homes.newsminer.com 17

Tips

to improve memory Forgetfulness can affect anyone. For example, few, if any, adults can say they have not experienced moments when they could not find their keys. And once the keys are found, people move on without giving much thought to why they did not immediately remember where they left their keys.

Isolated incidents where people cannot recall where they placed their car keys or other minor bouts with forgetfulness do not occur by accident. In fact, the Harvard Medical School notes that they are likely byproducts of age-related changes in thinking skills. When people reach their 50s, chemical and structural changes in the brain may begin to occur, and these changes can affect a person’s ability to process memories. Father Time may be a formidable foe, but people can take steps to give their memories a boost as they get older. • Embrace recognition instead of trusting recall. That means people are more likely to remember something they read, such as a note or a list, than something they’re simply told. • Recognize the value of repetition. The Harvard Medical School notes that people might be more inclined to remember what they hear if they repeat it out loud. Names and addresses might be more easily remembered after they’re repeated out loud because repetition increases the likelihood that the brain will record the information and be capable of retrieving it later. When studying for exams, many students repeat important points to themselves time and again, and that same approach can be applied by adults who are trying to improve their memories. • Eat a healthy diet. A study published in 2015 in the journal Neurology found that people who eat healthy diets with lots of fruits, vegetables, nuts, and fish and little alcohol and red meat may be less likely to experience declines in their memory and thinking skills. Authored by Andrew Smyth of McMaster University in Ontario and the National University of Ireland in Galway, the study following more than 27,000 people in 40 countries for an average of roughly five years. All participants were 55 and older and had diabetes or a history of heart disease, stroke or peripheral artery disease. Those who ate the healthiest diets were 24 percent less likely to experience cognitive decline than people with the least healthy diets. • Break things down. Breaking things down into small chunks also can help improve memory. Gardening is a popular activity that seems to be gaining even more supporters. Statistica reports that the number of people who gardened within the last 12 months in the United States rose from around 105 million in 2008 to 118 million in 2017. Gardening can be relaxing yet physically demanding work. Gardeners who find themselves battling aches and pains after spending time in the garden may need to make a greater effort to reduce injuries and improve comfort when tilling, weeding or installing new landscape features. Ergonomic gardening techniques and tools can help gardeners reduce their risk of injury and make gardening more comfortable.

WARM UP

Just as novice athletes wouldn’t dive right into a strenuous workout at the gym, nor should novice gardeners immediately pick up a shovel and jump into digging a hole for their new tree. Gardening requires bending, stooping, lifting, twisting, and other movements that work the entire body. Spending 10 or more minutes stretching, walking and doing a few back and arm rotations can limber the body up for the physical activity to come.

USE PROPER FORM

Think about the mechanics of lifting weights during a workout, as home and garden tasks may mimic movements made when exercising. The occupational therapists at Bend Spinal Care say that strain on the lower back can be reduced by positioning objects close to the body and its center of gravity when lifting them. Furthermore, people can contract their abdominal (core) muscles

when lifting and bending to support the back. When lifting heavy objects, power should be derived from the legs and buttocks rather than the back.

KEEP ITEMS CLOSE

Keeping work closer to the body will reduce the need for stooping, leaning or reaching, which should cut down on pulled muscles. Long-handled tools can help minimize reaching. Use step ladders to reach high areas or get down on padded cushions to work closer to the ground. This alleviates strain to the neck from having to look up or down for extended periods of time. Raised garden beds can bring plants to a person’s level. The therapists at ProCare Physical Therapy say that working below shoulder level whenever possible can prevent shoulder strains; otherwise, perform tasks for no more than five minutes at a time.

gardening techniques can make gardening less taxing

INVEST IN NEW TOOLS

Cushioned grips and grip handles can prevent wrist fatigue, as can hand tools that keep wrists straight to improve strength and reduce repetitive motion injuries. Long-handled tools and push mowers should be as tall as the person using them. Seek out tools that keep the body in natural positions to maximize efficiency. Even though gardening is viewed as a relaxing pastime, the work involved can be taxing on the body. Ergonomic tools and proper form can keep injuries at bay.

Key moments in American Revolutionary history

Americans celebrate their independence from British rule every July Fourth. Celebrations typically include fireworks, parades and parties. While the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776 was a seminal moment in both American and world history, the following are some notable events that took place in the years preceding 1776 and helped to shape the country now known as the United States of America.

• 1765:

The Passage of the Stamp Act marked the first major form of taxation on British colonists living in what is now America. The act imposed taxes on printed materials to help offset the costs of British troops in the colonies and replenish British debts. Colonists were upset they had no say in how taxes were levied or how the money would be spent.

• 1767:

After repealing the Stamp Act, Britain imposed the Townshend Acts, a series of taxes on various British goods, including tea. Again, colonists were outraged, spurring a boycott on British goods.

• 1770:

The Boston Massacre involved a crowd of colonists and a collection of British soldiers. The soldiers opened fire on the crowd, killing five and wounding six others. This incident helped increase anti-British sentiments in the colonies.

• 1775:

The British governor of Massachusetts sent several hundred British troops to seize military supplies from the colonists at Concord. When the colonists discovered the plan, they sent their own militia to intercept the forces at Lexington. The British would win at Lexington but were defeated at Concord. Throughout 1775, many other clashes between colonists and British troops took place, eventually culminating in an event that would forever change American history.

• 1776:

On July 4, 1776, the Second Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence, which formally proclaimed American colonies independent from Britain. However, Britain was not willing to bend to colonists’ wishes.

• 1776-1783:

Several battles took place during this time period, including Moore’s Creek Bridge, Sullivan’s Island and Fort Washington. France was brought into the war in 1777. A successful sea-andland campaign of American and French armies led to the surrender of British troops at Yorktown.

• 1783:

Nearly two decades after colonists began voicing their displeasure with British laws, the American Revolution formally ended on September 3, 1783 with the Treaty of Paris. The British Empire accepted defeat and recognized the independence of the United States of America.

• 1773:

A few years after the Boston Massacre, colonists boarded British ships in the Boston harbor and threw the tea into the sea as protest against the Tea Act. Known as The Boston Tea Party, this event proved a catalyst for revolution.

After the Intolerable Acts aimed to punish colonists for The Boston Tea party, delegates from 12 of the original 13 colonies met illegally to form the First Continental Congress. They convened to discuss plans for dealing with various British offenses. Congress also developed political statements against the British and urged people to boycott British goods. The first president of this congress was Payton Randolph. John Hancock was appointed president the following year after the monarchy ignored the first Congress’ petition.
